Tonight, On Mehsterpiece Theatre, Pt. 5

Mehsterpiece Theatre’s goal is to introduce its viewers to as many exciting original characters and situations as possible, and to serve as a means of transportation to lands unknown. But there are times, such as in the case of tonight’s installment (brought to you by the Tenergy Hand Blender and Mediocritee) when seek something different: to look at a known event through a new lens.

Everything has an origin story, even the things we most take for granted. The wheel had to be invented. Fire had to be discovered. And the dictionary had to be written.

As author Simon Winchester has illuminated his best-selling book The Surgeon of Crowthorne, (later retitled The Professor and the Madman for American audiences) the construction of the first Oxford English Dictionary was not as simple a task as it may seem. In fact, it is a tale of high intrigue, involving, among other things, murder and an asylum for the criminally insane. Thus, it should come as no surprise that it has already received a film adaptation.

But we here at Mehsterpiece Theatre see a problem. Such a story of unlikely partnerships and redemption and overcoming adversity in the face of a Herculean intellectual task is certainly enthralling, but it erases something important: the transcription of every known word in the English language.

This erasure is something we hope to rectify in our adaptation…

The Professor and the Madman: Just the Transcription Scenes!
