The potato chips are beside the point.
Potato chips aren’t rare. Potato chips aren’t hard to find. You’ll probably never be more than ten minutes away from a potato chip in your entire life. Making potato chips in the microwave with a Mastrad Top Chips Set is only “easy” relative to making them in a deep fryer. It’s a hell of a lot less easy than buying them at the store. So why bother?
For the memories.
When you gather your friends, or your kids, or your cellmates together to try making chips, you bond over your shared failures. You unite in your common triumphs. When seasoned with memory, the soggy misfires and the crispy bullseyes alike taste equally delicious.
I should know. A few years ago @matthew and I (@JasonToon) took a shot at making some Mastrad Top Chips in the Woot kitchen. Ask me for details about any of the literally hundreds of times I bought potato chips while I worked there, and I couldn’t tell you a thing. But the day we made that video was one of the most memorable of my tenure.
I’ll always remember that if you don’t dry the potatoes first, they’re nauseatingly slimy. I’ll always remember the incredulous euphoria when that first plate of correctly dried chips turned out not just edible, but pretty good. I’ll always remember that overcast Tuesday like it was yesterday. (I think it was a Tuesday.)
To be sure, Mastrad Top Chips are fat-free and preservative-free. Any potato can be a blank canvas upon which you can compose the chili-Old Bay-pineapple potato chip of your dreams. But you’ll remember the fun you had long after the flavor has faded. It’s not about the chips. It’s about the journey.
