There was some interesting research where they were trying to tell your biological age (vs chronological age) by the heat your face gave off. Your face gets “colder” with fewer “hot spots” as you age and women’s faces have fewer “hot spots” than men as they age.
Short version: only use these to get someone’s temperature holding it very close (or touching, depending what the specific instructions come with these kinds of things) over their temple.
Long version:
The article missed the important practical application which is using these things to take your temperature to see if you are sick. You will get a “wrong” reading on much of your face, even parts of your forehead depending on your sex and age.
On women the ONLY part of their face that remained warmer as they aged is over the temples. As a result it would make sense to me to only take anyone’s temperature with these things holding it over someone’s temples.
I got one of these in a previous sale. It takes a little getting used to not having a definitive temperature to compare to. You kind of have to establish your own normal temp by checking it a number of times when you are fine. Then you have an idea there is something off when it changes much from that established normal.
The write up was fantastically accurate this am. Thanks for that. Do have one family member with post holiday diagnosis of mono so hoping no sharing of spoons. No kissing illness jokes please, if you can help it.
I’ve been through a pair of the ear-or-forehead versions. All thermo’s of this type are inconsistent- you’re better off just using your hand to assess a potential fever. A mercury-in-glass (oral or rectal) is the most accurate, but I don’t think they even make them anymore.
Also, the favorability rating on Amazon (4 + 5 star reviews) is only 72%. I rarely buy anything with less than 88% favorability. Helps reduce buyer remorse and irritation…
@kuoh LOL, a funny visual, but generally a hand to the forehead can give some useful feedback. Asses are almost always cooler (or hotter) than other areas…
Is there any cooking point to owning this when I already have stabby kitchen thermometers? When do you need to check surface temp? Maybe when griddling, but that seems excessive.
This thing is wildly inaccurate. Taking consecutive readings on the same surface (my son’s forehead) yielded readings of 89, 85, 91, and 103.8. It generally has that much range on any surface. When the difference between fever and normal is one or two degrees, this is completely useless.

I got this and it is fun to play with. Never knew my computer monitor had that hot spot.
Will this let me know when my cats are in heat?
What’s the tell-tale (tail?) temperature?
@phendrick
@phendrick Well if you get hot with cats lying on top of you then you know your cats are hot.
@phendrick Same for significant other. Of course you need a baseline reading to compare to.

I find that the thermometer has to be very close, almost touching, to get a good reading.

I have this and 3 others like it, none ever tell me my correct temperature…I wish I could find one that was accurate within .3 degree or less
I bought two of these from you, and each one gives a different temperature of the same item. So much for the accuracy.
@craigcush Now you need to buy a third to determine the identity of the rogue thermometer.
@craigcush @ShotgunX he needs a third to determine which is the minority report.
@craigcush @craigthom @ShotgunX Or are they all wrong together?

I got one of these last time. They are not of any use for BQQ or smoking while the foods on the grill. They just report “HIGH” or something like that.
So these are not as useful for cooking as I had hoped. I guess for $5 they still have their place.
But for $10 you can get a ThermoPro instant read probe and just poke stuff. (Not recommended on living meat)
@lichen They work fine on living meat. There’s just an increased risk of being poked back.
KuoH
@kuoh @lichen But you do have to go deep enough to get an accurate reading.
@blaineg @lichen Is going deep a problem for you?
KuoH
I bought a bunch of these a while back. They’re ok.
Not exactly what I was expecting for cyber-Monday, but it IS a meh offering from a meh site so I guess it makes sense.

@edsa Yeah no problem, we can skip the foreplay if you want.
I did it.

@MrNews So when you say hand to assess, you mean hand to asses? I’ll take the thermo gun, execution style thank you.

I bought one and it just went dead in a couple months.
I’d be wary.

Hey Meh, quit messing around with this amateur stuff and start selling IR cameras.
@blaineg I was here.
