Power En Route

Doesn’t your car have a USB port already?

Maybe. Maybe not.

And even if it does, there’s the other issue to consider: does that USB port–intended to convey data from phone to stereo–even charge stuff?

No, that question isn’t meant to be smug. I’m really asking. Because, in my experience, the answer seems to vary from car to car. Sometimes, it’s a definite yes; I plug in my phone and it charges just like it’s plugged into the wall. Other times, it seems to be… I don’t know? Maybe a little bit? And then other times still, the answer is: no, it doesn’t charge, but it also doesn’t not charge. As in: stuff plugged in will not die, but the battery bar won’t change.

But even if you answered ‘yes’ to the first question–your car has a USB port–and ‘yes’ to the second question–it legitimately charges stuff–there remains a third question: do you really only ever have a single thing that needs charging?

Sure, maybe when you take a solo trip to the grocery store to stock up it makes sense to have the built-in port for your phone and your phone alone. But what about when you and the family embark on a long road trip to see the grandparents for the holidays? Are you willing to risk it with just the port(s) your car has in a situation like that? What if a tablet or a gaming device dies? What will you do then? Talk to each other???

What we’re getting at is that you should just buy this 2-pack of car chargers. You plug one into the port formerly known as the cigarette lighter, and it turns it into two USB ports that charge stuff. Fast.

And then you can take the other and… do whatever you want. Give it to a friend. Put it in your spouse’s car. Give it to the aforementioned grandparents. Use it as a stocking stuffer. Or leave it in the closet for when you inevitably misplace or break the other one.

Point is: you should buy them. So do that. Buy them.
