“Water, tea, coffee,” Peter Morton offered.
“Peter,” hissed Pam Morton. “How many times have we talked about this?”
“I don’t know what to tell you, Pam,” said Peter Morton. “There are people who drink coffee at night. Not admitting that is erasure.”
“But there are also people who don’t drink coffee at all,” Pam Morton said. “People who limit their caffeine consumption and therefore would take the offer of a cup of coffee as though it were an invitation to do a line of cocaine.”
“And you, by bringing up ‘a line of cocaine,’ have made him think of a line of cocaine,” Peter Morton said. “What if he’s a recovering addict, Pam?”
Pam Morton’s eyes filled with tears. “You’re right. Oh God. I’m a monster!”
Peter Morton took her into his arms and patted her back. “You’re not a monster, sweetie. We’re all trying to figure this out.”
