The Drive
Which is worse: driving to work, or driving home from work?
Driving to work would be the obvious answer, but we’re not so sure.
Yes, there might be a bit of dread. Yes, it’s possible that, depending on where you are, the commute provides you with some bonus stress before taking on the real stress of the workday. Whereas, the drive home is essentially the journey to a place where you can convene with your family and allow the tension of the grind to release.
At the same time, a drive to work can sometimes feel like a little pocket of quiet before the storm that is the rest of your day. Maybe you had to rush out the door, and maybe you’ve got something to get done as soon as you get to the workplace. But you’re awake. You’re caffeinated. You’re fresh. You’re ready to go! Isn’t it nice to just be there, in your car, fully present for a little while?
(And sure, some of you might argue this. “Awake? Fresh? IN THE MORNING?! Doesn’t sound like anyone I know.” To which we’d respond: it’s not like, after a whole day of work, you’re going to be less tired and grimy.)
Meanwhile, on the commute from work, every delay just means another tragic minute you have to spend in pants that are not of the pajama variety. Every slow down on the highway, every red light, every construction zone: it’s keeping you from your couch, your cat, your television.
Oh, also: your spouse and your kids if you have them. Important to mention those, too.
Which is to say nothing of any chores you have to get done when you get home, which often carry a similar dread to that which you feel driving into work, only the exhaustion of the day seems to amplify it, making any task seem insurmountable.
So, to go back to the initial question: which is worse, the drive to work, or the drive home?
The answer: it doesn’t matter, because as long as you have one of these, your phone will remain charged and easy to control, so at least you can listen to a podcast or something while you drive.
