Get It Together

This past weekend, I spent some time sitting on the deck, reading. It was sunny, in the mid-60s, a little gusty but not too bad. In other words, the first real nice day in a while. It felt great. And it’s something I honestly didn’t do much before this past year. Reading? Sure. But outside, where I can get some fresh air and look up from a given page to watch the birds at the feeders? That’s something that came out of 2020 for sure.

I bring this up because there’ve been a lot of things that we’ve all done the past year for the basic purpose of ‘getting through.’ We’ve developed new hobbies. We’ve tried new things. We’ve redecorated. We’ve repainted all the rooms in our house. We’ve gardened more. We’ve learned how to cook new things. We’ve gotten deeply invested in marble racing.

Some of these things, we’ll naturally leave behind. The bathroom won’t need a new paint job a few years at least. And if you’re heading into the office every day, you might not have the same amount of prep time for making those elaborate meals.

But it’s also important to remember that the things we did this year we really enjoyed or found enriching will still be available to us, even when they’re downgraded from ‘coping mechanisms’ to ‘things we can do.’ Like reading on the deck. Or taking long walks. Or doing a jigsaw puzzle.

Seriously, you know what we’re talking about: the nights that you and your room mate or your partner opened a beer (or cocktail or wine or tea) and poured the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle out onto the kitchen table and chatted (or didn’t) while hour after hour of screen-free time passed in what felt like minutes. You’re just going to leave something as magical and relaxing as that in the past? And for what? To go out to some loud bar called The Wave so you can meet up with your friend and their coworkers and end up talking to someone who’s ostensibly a stranger, leaning in frequently and pointing to your ear because you can’t hear anything?

No! Of course not! Or, at least, you shouldn’t.

So get some new jigsaw puzzles and enjoy them while things are still in the process of normalizing. Or, save them for later, when a quiet night in will be just as nice as it is now, if not nicer.
