Feet of Strength

This past summer, when it was hot as hell even at dawn and about 200% humidity, I could’ve said, Ah, screw it. I could’ve gone for a short walk and then spent the day sequestered inside, sipping ice water and watching movies that take place in the tundra. But I decided, no! I was not going to let nature prevent me from getting my heart rate up and burning a few calories! I was going to take a run, dammit! A run… on the treadmill.

So I grabbed the first pair of socks I could find–a pair of ratty gray ones I’ve had for years–put them on, laced up my running shoes over them, and hit the belt. For six miles. Six sweaty miles, I should add, despite not having to face the nasty out-of-doors. And you know what my reward was? A healthy-feeling burn in my legs, an endorphin high, and a sense of satisfaction. Also: a huge fucking blister running all the way along my right arch.

The lesson: get good socks if you want to run.

And that goes double, by the way, if you plan to kick off the new year by taking on a cardio habit.

It can be tough in the beginning. There’s the mental issue, obviously. It can take time to get used to the repetitive movement, get your breathing right, and get to where you don’t notice a certain low-boil soreness. And then there’s your actual physical body to deal with. When I started running, it felt like every other week I had some sort of unexplainable tweaked ankle or stiff knee or whatnot. Not to mention, it’s January. You’re dealing with the cold, maybe. But even if you live in a place where the winters are mild, there’s the issue of light limiting when you can easily get out and for how long.

Wearing crummy socks just invites more potential risk to the equation. So, again, get good ones. Like these.

They’re comfy. They’re snug. They wick moisture. And, apparently, they keep your feet cool. We say ‘apparently’ with that last bit because among the 26 Amazon reviews–all of which were 4 or 5 stars–there seemed to be consensus on all other aspects but the cooling feature. Still, comfortable, snug, moisture-wicking socks are good. Especially when you get a 12-pack for just 15 bucks.

So buy some socks! For running! Or, you know, just wearing. They’re good for that too.
