@guybrush01@werehatrack Or maybe getting caught up in more interesting activities like sleeping, video games or watching the original Twilight Zone series again.
Are these Asian-fit masks? I bought some N95 masks made by an Asian company and they’re just a bit smaller than the 3M masks I also purchased. Either way, I have a beard so I’ll never pass a fit test.
@fuzzmanmatt I think if you have a full/ish beard, a KN95 or KF94 seem to be somewhat better than an N95, because they fit below the chin line. Unless you shave your face, none of these will meet spec, but “any mask is better than no mask,” IMO. We can only do the best we can. Peace.
@krazyvolfan Huh? For whom? And why not? (I haven’t had even a cold, much less a flu or Covid infection, since I started masking in early 2020. And that is just fine, for me! I don’t like getting/being sick.)
@CBL_WV@krazyvolfan I think the protest is in light of the recent uptick in mask offerings here on meh.com. Since numbers are beginning to decline, the surplus is showing up here, and we all want tech! Yeah, more Bluetooth Battery Speaker Air Fryers!
@CBL_WV@krazyvolfan We’re with you! I have a form of lung disease, bronchiectasis. Every time a family member got a cold I’d have a flare-up. So we’ve been masking up since early 2020 and it’s been great staying healthy.
@benf_dc My hospital friends tell me that expiration dates for masks, gowns and similar “can be extended for at least 2 years” if they have been stored in a reasonable environment…)
@benf_dc@CBL_WV As a hospital employee let me tell you that I get more than a little annoyed when I see “expiration dates” on things that are non-perishable, like syringes, needles, gauze/bandages, empty bags & vials, etc. But I could totally see the product deteriorating faster if stored in, say direct sunlight for months or years at a time (or perhaps in a hot vehicle during the summer,) or in an otherwise hot/humid environment. For respirators like these, however, I could maybe see the elastic straps getting brittle and snapping after more than a few years?
Empty clear poly bags and syringe gaskets will eventually become brittle and fail to meet spec. For needles & vials the expiration should be around the package maintaining sterility.
A hospital could clean & sterilize needles but its an aspect of our industrial efficiency that slagging a needle and buying a new one is cheaper than washing & autoclaving them.
@Atomizer@jamesmcp
The technology for sharpening the end of a needle is at least two quantum levels better today than it was 70 years ago, when autoclaving was the standard. And back then, needles were reused pretty much indefinitely, albeit with an occasional bit of sharpening. They were never really all that sharp. And anybody who really deals with them can tell you that the first time that a needle pierces the skin, it is made duller than it was before that. This is part of the reason why injectable medicines are drawn from the vial with one needle, and then injected with a separate, brand new needle. Usually this second needle is of a smaller gauge, producing less discomfort.
Did I mention that I’m on an injectable med that I have to self-administer?
@jamesmcp Yeah I can definitely see some of the silicone/rubber/etc. components actually wearing out, it’s just the principle behind non-drug/food items being fine one day and then expiring the next. Even drugs get extended use dating during shortages (like right now.)
And like @werehatrack said, we can certainly autoclave stuff but I’m not aware of any way to re-sharpen needles on-site. They basically have to be disposable. I can tell you from experience, using the larger (e.g. 16 ga) needles for compounding, you can feel them getting more dull with each successive puncture (i.e. there’s more and more resistance each time.) When batching I change the needle after 2 or 3 punctures, max.
Damn, each of these are certainly better than “nothing,” mask- and health-wise. At 50¢ per N95, or 30¢ per KN95, they seem well worth the price. Esp. vs. potential long-Covid. (I prefer KF94s myself, they fit my face better.) But I’m not going to stop masking in public for the near future, so either of these offers seem valid. IMHO, of course.
Um, it’s 4:20 (heh) on the east coast, and there are, what, 7 comments? All but one are from people who have a vested interest in this site. Either VMP or Kickstarter members.
Meh team, read the writing on the wall. Amazon™ isn’t going to buy off @snapster this time. You don’t have a million square foot warehouse that is visible from space to sell.
Get back to selling weird shit we can’t find anywhere else. If anybody needs masks, they can just go to Target or CVS or something, and they get them for free. Nummy nosh certified, too!
Eh, whatever. I’m going on my first vacation in 2 years on Tuesday. I look forward to not being the first or second poster.
FYI US-made 3M brand N95 masks are back in stock at Home Depot, Ace Hardware, I’m sure other places.
About $22 gets you a box of 20, so about twice the price per item of this deal for Chinese “N95?” masks. I’d say it’s worth it and I use them for cleaning, construction and dusty gardening also. I also bought boxes of them for some friends.
You can get the ones with valve, but of course they cost a bit more. Don’t buy individual 1 or 2 packs, you’ll pay a lot more.
Temping to purchase to have on hand for the next scheduled virus outbreak, but since these n95s come from a factory near Wuhan itself, I think I’ll pass.
@pheaton
On the other hand, I don’t think there’s any place on the planet that has a closer appreciation of the oh shit oh shit oh shit factor involved with the virus.
@jmill099@nzdod
A bunch of the n95 masks that got their designations on the emergency basis have since had their certification downgraded. One of them is my favorite mask, which is made in Fort Worth. They still provide it, but they had to change the model number on it when their emergency certification was withdrawn. They are working on getting a new version fully certified under n95, but that is proving to be a lengthy and costly process.
To mask or not to mask, that is the question. I think we will go mask free, by gov’t edict at least, until the elections are over this November. Then, you might want to have a good stash; well, depending on who wins elections.
@DKinMN I’m masking regardless of what my gov’t says I should or shouldn’t do. I’ve bought the limit on meh practically every time they sell quality masks. The politics of CoVid are exasperating! My Governor did a special press conference and she dramatically ripped off her mask in front of all her office folks; they kept theirs on! She boldly stated, “the mask mandate is over” NM Gov says no more mask
@accelerator@DKinMN Germs don’t vote or watch TV or read facebook. They just do germy-things. It’s up to us all how well those germy things can germinate.
@accelerator@DKinMN@pmarin gems do pass through these masks though… sorry. I’m a fit tester for a major medical company. These bad boys won’t stop the rona. Get a respirator if you really wanna be safe.
The nose piece on these n95 masks irritates the heck out of my skin. The other ones, the KN95 version, is a good mask but it has ear loops. I can only wear those for about an hour to an hour and a half before I have to take it off. If I could get that KN-95 with the other style of straps, I’d buy lots of them

Who was that masked man?
@yakkoTDI He’s BACK! Hope work hasn’t been too horrible lately.
@guybrush01 I was never gone.
@guybrush01 @yakkoTDI
Just resting after a prolonged squawk, or perhaps pining for the fjords?
@guybrush01 @werehatrack Or maybe getting caught up in more interesting activities like sleeping, video games or watching the original Twilight Zone series again.
@guybrush01 @werehatrack
@yakkoTDI - He missed you.
I mean
I mistrust the American government 33% less than the Chinese government
So I’m at an impasse

@krazyvolfan Die any way you want. Freedom!

Time to start selling these using a pastadrop-style lottery?
@awk Nope, not yet.

@CBL_WV Yes! KF94s for the win.
Great. More crap to throw in the river.
@tweezak Set your dump on fire. River pollution problem solved.
@mike808 How is flaming poop going to help river pollution?
@mike808 @otherstalin
Invent time travel, go back to Cleveland in the 60s, and have both! Dump your stuff in a flaming river!
@heartny
Bc it’s been a week since they sold the last batch
@heartny
Because we weren’t already bored enough with the humidifiers and the hair styling crap.

Sorry that my ‘meh’ clicks aren’t data points. I click it every single day whether I buy the thing or not.
@gwrankin I wish I could click meh on ur post! (jk :P)
I wish meh would sell the N95 masks with the exhaust valve. Those are actually really useful when mowing the yard.
@ohhwell I use those too. Really helps with my allergies.

I’ve been buying the FLTR brand KN95s from Costco in a 100 box for $60 but they seem to be out of them at the moment. I’ll take a $20 gamble.

@natrldsastr Chemo sucks. Hopefully she can join my mom in the 30+ years club.
Huh, these are still available!
