xbox one s or x?
3Looks like borderlands 3 is coming out this year, so we’re going to have to get one of these. We love our giant 1080p plasma, so we’re unlikely to get a 4k tv anytime soon. Does it make sense to get the one x anyway, or is the s basically just as good if you don’t have a 4k tv?

One X has higher performance. Both models have 4K (for watching disks or game streaming). One X can play games in 4K.
Use the eBay discount code PREPSPRING today before 8PM Pacific Time and you can get a 1TB Xbox One S Sea of Thieves bundle for $204, free shipping, no tax.
Here’s Microsoft’s comparison chart between the two consoles.
Another option is to get an older used or refurb “original” model (1080p, no 4K). In my area, used original XBox One are selling for $80 and up.
@ruouttaurmind No time to compare. Is this a really, really good deal?
@ruouttaurmind oh, oh, oh I FUCKING HATE YOU! You made me make a rash decision for the kids. When I moved into the new house I didn’t have a lot. My son is playing my old ORIGINAL xbox
I bought this for the kids and because I needed a blu-ray player - so I filled two needs for the price. Also, my sone can take out games at the library which he couldn’t do before with the Original XBOX. For the family, thank you. For my credit card and rash, impulsive buying - FUCKER!
I also needed to act quick because everytime I refreshed the page (in minutes) another 5 or 10 of these was being sold.
This is what I could become, you bastard!
***13 more sold in just 6 min after my purchase.
@mfladd It’s a good deal if you’re interested in Sea of Thieves. If you’re not interested in the game, it’s $20 or $30 more than you’d expect to pay for the best deal on console only, no game. So if It’s a physical disk copy of the game you can trade in at GameStop for something else, or sell on CL or eBay, or stick it in the box in a Mehexchange.
@mfladd
That’s a good indicator of the value of the deal I’d say.
@ruouttaurmind Thanks for the info Looking at the microsoft site I’m on the fence. I want the x, but I don’t know that I really need it. I’ve been happy with my 360 up until now…
@Seeds
If you don’t anticipate a 4K TV in your near future, the S is a great option.
@ruouttaurmind AND, don’t forget a good blu-ray player would have set me back a chunk a change too. Thanks again. My sons birthday is in May
@ruouttaurmind
I might have to come try it in person…
@ruouttaurmind @Seeds I have a 4k tv, but I don’t even have the 4K plan on netflix. The picture is great w/o it. I am sure I won’t miss the difference with the 4k gaming.
@PlacidPenguin @ruouttaurmind BE AFRAID!
@mfladd @ruouttaurmind
Why should I be afraid?
@PlacidPenguin It’s not you that should be. It’s you showing up at people’s houses that is a scary thought.
@mfladd You’re gonna be glad you got a 1TB drive too. I have 500MB on my original XBone and filled it after installing just 5 games from disk!
@mfladd
I have no interest in showing up at ANY mehmbers residence.
I don’t socialize.
@ruouttaurmind Holy Shit. More THAN 100 units sold in the 25 mins after I bought and the ebay 15% deal ended.
@PlacidPenguin I have a shirt for you then.

@ruouttaurmind @Seeds Just remember that if you’re enjoying Games with Gold, they’re permanent rentals on Xbox One as opposed to freebies on Xbox 360, which means you need to keep up the membership if you want the games.
@dashcloud You are correct, of course. IIRC, I think it was you who schooled me on the whole Games with Gold/Live bit in my Xbox topic a few months ago.
@dashcloud thanks, good to know
In all seriousness I am not sure the price of the x vs the s is to the point where it’s a definitive “get the x” yet.
costco and amazon prices are the same for the x if it helps with your shopping any.
I swore I saw some deal at costco that I can’t find on the site, will update if I see it next time I’m in there.
@thismyusername I agree totally. I think PS4Pro is an easy choice over PS4, but the premium price of X vs. S is a bit more of a stretch.
@thismyusername I live by the motto “always play catch up on tech - it’s cheaper that way”
@ruouttaurmind @thismyusername I’ve seen that argument, but it confuses me a little- 100 bucks difference isn’t the end of the world for something I’ll be using for at least a few years, the x looks more capable than the pro, and Halo…
@Seeds I guess it’s a matter of the service life you may anticipate from the system you’ll get for a hundy less?
Game systems, all of them, tend to have a pretty long service life compared to most technology. They do not become obsoleted and unsupported as quickly as, say, a laptop or a cell phone. I couldn’t speculate on the longest active service life of a console, but maybe I’ll use the Wii as an example. It was released in 2006, yet new games and accessories are still readily available to this day.
Due to the example of the Wii, I decided to spend the extra hundy and bought in to the Wii U platform. What was, at the time, the next gen platform. Groundbreaking features, superior performance, the game industry was abuzz.
And we see how that move worked out for me. Wii U is now Nintendo’s dirty little mistake and they’re doing their best to sweep the remaining evidence of that platform under the rug.
Diametrically, the Xbox One was released in 2013 and five years later there is no end in sight for the useful life of the original consoles.
@Seeds not sure where you see $100 difference, currently the S goes for $200-240 while the X goes for $480-550.
Once pricing gets to a $100 difference then the X would be the way to go.
@thismyusername I meant $100 between the ps4 pro which most people seem to think is reasonable and the xbox one x which most people say is very expensive. I figure they should either both be not worth it or both worth it. That’s why I mentioned the x being more capable than the pro and Halo.
@ruouttaurmind It’s a shame the Wii U never really made it. I was broke at the time so I never got one, but it seemed like a cool concept. Too expensive to make a whole line of games that used a hidden screen I guess.
@Seeds
The dreaded “incremental upgrade” rabbit hole. “For a few dollars more I could get a PS4 Pro instead of a Xbox One S. But for a few dollars more than the PS4 Pro I could get the Xbox One X. But for a few dollars more than the Xbox One X I could get a Scorpio.”
It’s easier if I just win the lottery and get ‘em all!
I feel like there’s more value (for my interests) in the PS4 Pro because of VR. If MS ever moves forward with their VR/AR concept platform, that would be a value add for me.
@ruouttaurmind
So you can get a scorpion?
Lots of pondering to do.
@PlacidPenguin I can get a Scorpio game console. Siri OTOH seems to think it should be a Scorpion.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ruouttaurmind
Oh. I’d have been willing to take a scorpion instead of a Coral snake…
@Seeds ahh right, I understand.
@ruouttaurmind @Seeds @thismyusername
Ok, I recieved my XBOX One S 1TB and spent all day setting it up. I downloaded what is suppose to be a full-game download of Sea of Thieves. When I go to SofT it prompts me for XBOX gold and says “sorry, you are not currently allowed to join any sessions. Please check your account settings and try again”. If this is suppose to be a full-game $60 download, why do I need XBOX gold to play it? WTF is happening here? Can’t I just play the game? I don’t want to join any sessions.
@ruouttaurmind @Seeds @thismyusername
Gaaaaaaah! This is fuckery to say they are giving you a free game and then to make it accessible only thru xbox live gold. How is this fuckery free?
"Sea of Thieves can only be played while online, and you will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play all modes of the game. You will not be able to play the game while offline."
@mfladd I don’t have this game, so I’m unable to provide any meaningful answer, however a short solution is: As a new Xbox owner you are able to sign up for a 30 free trial of Xbox Live Gold. Do that until someone with a better answer responds.
@mfladd Well that’s fucking irritating.
@Seeds @ruouttaurmind @thismyusername This game sucks! I don’t want to play with other players. My crew stuck me in a brig for no reason and are taunting me…LOL. You can’t get out till they let you out or you quit the game.
My first experience was hearing people with headsets saying “we have random people here. I’ll get him. Dude, don’t get killed! Shit, I think he is going for the ship (actually I was just jumping in the water not to get shot)”
I don’t want this SHIT!!!
I looked it up and it appears groups of people are abusing newbies with the brig for various reasons - like…they can! Bastards!!!
Waste of a game for me
@mfladd @Seeds PUBG also requires XBLG. This is why I didn’t order it. FWIW, until reading your message about Sea of Thieves, that was the only game I was aware of which requires XBLG to play.
@mfladd while I appreciate being cc’ed in these comments… I will point out that I didn’t recommend this in anyway whatsoever… just that between the two the S is the better deal at this moment in time… in fact… you will find that this entire thread is under a glorious PC MASTER RACE guy…
…but yes generally with xbox they force you on the service if you want to play “online” and other things… it has changed quite a bit from the nice original xbox live service from back in the day.
My only current console (if you can call it that) is a nintendo switch and I won’t have to pony up for the “service” on that one until next year sometime… and then I am not even sure I need it, well other than the free classic game every month… and its supposedly only $20 a year, which is still $20 too much for a company that charges $60 a game
ps: they do put gold live memberships on sale from time to time, do the trial and hold out until you see a deal.
@mfladd also looks like you get a free game (or two) to play monthly with the live gold as well (I’ve never owned an xbox, just had to configure them for relatives )
also it looks like they are doing 3 months of live gold for the price of 1 here:
https://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/gold
@thismyusername I cc’d everyone after being manhandled at sea by 12 yo boys with game sticks who stuck me in a dungeon and taunted me! Do you like the switch? I had thought about it for the boy.
The free 1 month live gold did get me Titanfall 2 Ultimate Edition for $6. Which after doing some research said is a good nongamer game. I also won’t have to hide from children with sticks and 30 yo’s with headsets living in their parents basement sending me to the bottom of Davy Jone’s Locker (because I can’t figure out how to turn around and aim my pistol).
And yes, I did see the additional deal - don’t know if I will need it though. But thanks.
@thismyusername There were two reasons I embraced the Wii and Wii U platforms. The Wiimote motion control scheme was fit. Perfecto for FPS. And the free online multiplayer environment.
When I abandoned Wii for Xbox about 6 months ago I was a bit put off when I learned I’d have to pay for online multiplayer gaming, but this was less an issue for me on Xbox since I cannot play FPS with the thumb sticks.
So I switched to racing games like Forza and platformers like Tomb Raider, neither of which requires Live access (the racing games all provide a full local play experience).
@mfladd, With or without the Sea of Thieves game, you still got the best value available at the time. Plus, you can still sell on or trade the game. Microsoft has an accommodation for transferring license of a digital game.
@mfladd titanfall 2 is great fun on the PC, so I am sure it’s just a great on xbox.
Yes the switch is a worthwhile system for Mario Odyssey alone… also it has stardew valley, and it is a great time waster while listening to conference calls (mine gets far more use in portable mode ).
@ruouttaurmind Oh, I know. I am very happy with it. I just had no idea. My last gaming adventure was probaby Abe’s Odessey on xbox original
My kid is going to love playing roblox and minecraft - both of which were free. So are a bunch of Forza games (a tomb raider might have been too). I will wait for deal on Plants vs Zombies for him - he has all the plushies and is really into it.
Really, you can trade a downloaded game???
(Fucking Sea of Thieves! lol)
@mfladd I guess Sea of Thieves is about right, innit.
Yup, you can transfer a digital download. I’m unfamiliar with the nuances, but a quick search for “transfer a Xbox One digital game” should tell you how to go about it.
I don’t tend to buy into “membership clubs”, but when I got the Xbox I paid… maybe like $25 for Best Buy’s Gamer’s Club 2 year membership. I get 20% off games plus exclusive deals and discounts. For example when I bought Tomb Raider, the offer was “order any video game online for in-store pickup and get a $10 credit”. Since purchasing the membership a few months ago it’s already paid for itself, plus some. It’s like every game is on sale every day! Even sale and clearance games are eligible for the 20% discount.
@ruouttaurmind
Ok, checked it out. You can’t trade or transfer digital games once you’ve downloaded there content. You can sell or trade codes you haven’t used. So, I am out of luck. But I did find out how to play SofT where I can take a small sloop solo. I can then search for and hunt ships loaded with little 12 and 30 y.o. urchins to annoy them. And perhaps get off a few lucky cannon shots and sink their ships while at sea or when they are docked. Or die in the process. I’ll just become Jack Sparrow.
And if Ioose the element of surprise…
@mfladd Hmm.This sort of lead me to believe you could transfer it to another account.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
/giphy that sucks
@ruouttaurmind Once a license is assigned to an individuals account it must reamin there. You can transfer as your reference said,
“If your console was recently repaired, or if you’ve purchased a new console, use the licence transfer option on your console to transfer content licences.”, but it is meant more for transfering content from your box to another you may have purchased.
I found this, and some other things.
“You can’t trade licenses, but as Rod mentioned, you can Game Share with 1 other person at a time, whether it’s family or friend, but it should be someone you trust as you’ll have to login with your Gamertag on their console, and vice-versa.”
@mfladd
No worries! I’m sure you can trust that rando dude from Craig’s List!
I do have a 4K tv, but I recently bought a cheap Xbox One S with only 500GB hard drive. I have since added on an external 4TB drive that I also got a great deal on.
My reasoning was I’m old, have a kid, and rarely have time for serious gaming. Most recently, I think I’ve played Minecraft and Roblox (cross-platform multiplayer) with the kid. I was able to play a little bit of Sleeping Dogs which was free with Games with Gold. I finally bought Halo 5, but haven’t even booted it up.
I’m satisfied with my choice. I think the Xbox One X would be under appreciated in my house.
@medz My son loves ROBLOX!
Please take better care of your plasma and don’t game on her just maybe get a cheap ass 4k for gaming?
