@gwaki TY for the comment. Been poking around the interwebs to get full specs, prices, etc. These are often available on eBay for around $270, new/sealed. So the Woot price of $260 (incl. tax) wasn’t bad, but not great enough to dust off the AMEX for.

Would have liked to hook it up to to a PSVR, but just as I made that choice… sold out while in the VOP.

I might send this Paperwhite to my Mom. Her birthday is 6/7. She doesn’t read much anymore because holding the weight of a book is difficult with her arthritis in wrists and hands. Maybe this will be small and light enough she can manage it.

@ruouttaurmind Woo! Congrats! My 93 year old father has a basic kindle that he likes. I can put books on it remotely and he has the font cranked up to old people size.

I have to warn you about the touch screen though- my mom couldn’t get a touch screen to respond, and I guess it’s a problem for people with dry skin. I totally hate that they went with a touch screen because it has precicely no advantages over buttons on a Kindle. They put them back on the Oasis but I refuse to spend that much on an e-reader. Plus every time I brush crumbs off my paperwhite the font size gets really big.

@sammydog01 I just received the $30 Paperwhite 3G I ordered. Is it possible I received a brand new one? The last one I ordered came in a plain brown box sealed with some Amazon Certified Refurbished anti-tampering tape. This one is in a sealed retail “frustration free” black box. No mention of refurbished anywhere on the box.

@ruouttaurmind Mine is in a closed inpenetrable black box that you have to tear a strip to open. I tried checking the codes on Amazon but no luck. I did notice the Kindle tree by the bar code has a big “R” and wonder if that’s for refurbished?

@sammydog01 You are probably correct, the R is likely a code for Refurb. I’m guessing these are old, leftover refurb stock from the days when Amazon and Apple did “as-new” refurbishments, including packaging. Heck of a bargain for $30!

@ruouttaurmind I’m trying to register the Kindle. I got it onto wifi but I get an unable to connect error- try again later when I try to hook it up to my account. I read that it probably needs a manual software update and I loaded it into the memory but it’s stuck on the Amazon account page so I can’t update it. Shit.

@ruouttaurmind Never mind, I got it to work. You do need to do a manual update (plug it into a computer) before you can register it though.

@ruouttaurmind It’s perfect! I miss my special offers though- stupid pencils. I really like the 3g- this kindle lives in my purse because I often have time to kill. Now it syncs automatically with my home kindle so I don’t have to read two books at once.
