Wait, what's this about Windows 10? I just upgraded to a new laptop (went from Windows 7 to 8). Are you telling me it's already obsolete now? Also, someone, please help me figure out Windows 8. It makes no sense to me...
@PurplePawprints don't worry, your Windows 8 is current... They announced it, but it won't be available until next year, and if their track record has anything to do with it, it may not even make it then!
@PurplePawprints It's not just different–it's horrendous. Microsoft is calling the next one 10 just to put as much distance between it and 8 as possible. Where I work, Windows 8 has caused great distress. But after working with it for a while you may decide you like it. I would be happy if that's the case.
@caffeine_dude Unless it's leaner I won't be able to use it. My only Windows 8 machine is way too small to manage 8, I wish I could step it down to XP. I hate 8 on my machine, but it hasn't had a fair test as it runs like cold molasses on it.
@ChunkyBitz I think it's the direct jump to ten that amuses me most. MS seems to have a history of this,,, Xbox, then Xbox 360, then back to Xbox One... I feel like there were other similar inexplicable sequences, so hopefully others can contribute as well.
@ChunkyBitz I mean, this does sound familiar: "Going forward, Microsoft is planning to make regular, smaller updates to the Windows 10 codebase, rather than pushing out new major updates years apart," Foley added. "Windows 10 will have a common codebase across multiple screen sizes, with the UI tailored to work on those devices."
Windows 8 is legitimately the best OS I've ever used. The only reason why I didn't upgrade to it sooner is because I let myself be influenced by all the angry neckbeards on internet forums complaining about how different it is. Nonsense. The performance improvements are too big to ignore, and once you spend a few minutes to disable all the Metro UI stuff, it's basically just a faster, more feature-full, and more secure version of Win7.
@Dankk glad to hear you love it! A lot of us, however (myself included), think it is terrible. But as they say, one person's trash is another's treasure, and thank goodness there's room in the world for choices!
@Dankk I agree with @curtise, glad you like it but I hated it when I had to use it on a work machine at my old job. Without a touchscreen it just didn't make sense and there were enough little annoyances to turn me off of it. I don't really get jazzed for OS releases of any kind anyway and I probably won't bother upgrading until I buy a new PC.
@Dankk The number of people who are capable of disabling metro UI is quite small by contrast to the number of less computer-literate people stuck with that nonsense. I don't know how to disable it, but I did quickly learn that hitting the Windows key switches it to more familiar Win 7-like territory. I'm still mourning the death of XP.
Windows 10 is what you'll get after enough people pay Microsoft to alpha and beta test Windows 8, which came from people paying to alpha and beta test windows 7, which replaced the customer-financed alpha and beta tests of windows vista... and on and on. Quite a racket.
Since all their kids have grown up and are now goofing off in college (that you and I paid for) they no longer have anyone to suggest real names for their OS so it Looks like MS is attempting a running race to over sequel Friday the 13th (only 2 more to tie, 1 more to pass) by the way; why in the wide, wide world of sports didn't they make Friday the 13th-Xlll..? Too redundant? Could be. Soon the king will be dead.. Long live the king.
@unkabob I would think the name was in inspired by Apple. (The current OS is X aka 10). IMOP this is poor strategy because by the time WinX comes out OSX will be OSXi. But the next release of MS (after 10 is 12). Then they can skip 13.
Most of you know this but: SP means service pack. A SP contains all of the patches and fixes accumulated over the time, from the day the product is released in one easy to install package. Microsoft could not possibly change the UI (user interface) in a SP, because that would indicate the Metro (tiles) UI was a bug that needed fixing. But they did patch the start button.
@Moose You may be joking, but I'm still using my 486DX4-100 with EMM, SCSI hard disks, DOS 6.20, WFW 3.11, Corel SCSI, MYM, and a really old version of Quicken to handle my finances. Still works just fine.
Here's the part I find strange: much like with Star Trek movies, people consider every other Windows release to be good (or not as bad anyway), generally the ones that have odd numbers. So 3, XP(5), and 7 are all good. By skipping 9, which would have been a "good" one, they give the impression that they're giving us 2 shitty ones in a row. Maybe they are.
@SSteve well that's the thing. No win 9x user would ffeeling the effect. People on Windows 9 using crappily made applications would, as they would be treated as win 9x users.
Wait, what's this about Windows 10? I just upgraded to a new laptop (went from Windows 7 to 8). Are you telling me it's already obsolete now? Also, someone, please help me figure out Windows 8. It makes no sense to me...
@PurplePawprints Just close your eyes and pretend 8 didn't happen. Windows just skipped 9 to get past it.
@PurplePawprints They skipped 9. http://in.reuters.com/article/2014/09/30/microsoft-windows-idINKCN0HP20E20140930. Edit: You win, @Thumperchick.
@Thumperchick No wonder I got such a good deal on this laptop then. It's my first experience with 8...it's definitely different.
@PurplePawprints don't worry, your Windows 8 is current... They announced it, but it won't be available until next year, and if their track record has anything to do with it, it may not even make it then!
@curtise Thanks for the reassurance. I think once I get used to it, I may like it, but I'm still just trying to figure out where everything is.
@PurplePawprints It's not just different–it's horrendous. Microsoft is calling the next one 10 just to put as much distance between it and 8 as possible. @PurplePawprints The update may be free. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/windows-9-will-be-free-for-windows-8-users-report/1100-6422642/
@caffeine_dude Unless it's leaner I won't be able to use it. My only Windows 8 machine is way too small to manage 8, I wish I could step it down to XP. I hate 8 on my machine, but it hasn't had a fair test as it runs like cold molasses on it.
Windows 10... Did (seven) (eight) (nine)?
Windows Operating System 10... Win OS X you say? Why does this seem vaguely familiar...
Hmm.. Can't quite put my finger n it...
@curtise Oh, I see what you did there. Because Apple has been stuck on v10.* for like 13 years, so clearly Microsoft is copying them.
@ChunkyBitz I think it's the direct jump to ten that amuses me most. MS seems to have a history of this,,, Xbox, then Xbox 360, then back to Xbox One... I feel like there were other similar inexplicable sequences, so hopefully others can contribute as well.
@curtise Windows 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, 2000, 7, 8, 10. I get all the numbers?
@dave You forgot 98 and XP.
@Doodpants Ah right, just added 98, but I'm sticking to numbers for this series or it gets crazier.
@dave There were also the NT numbers. 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, 4.0, 2003, 2008, 2011, 2012.
@dave Be careful, you are going to end up stranded on an island with all kinds of odd people and mysterious occurences.
@Doodpants You also forgot ME
@curtise Apple isn't above this stuff either, as an example Final Cut pro: ...5,6,7,X
Windows 8 is legitimately the best OS I've ever used. @Dankk What is this Metro UI you speak of? Is this something I can google and figure out how to do, or is beyond the basic user?
@Dankk glad to hear you love it! A lot of us, however (myself included), think it is terrible. But as they say, one person's trash is another's treasure, and thank goodness there's room in the world for choices!
@PurplePawprints Perhaps he speaks about bloatware??
@Dankk I agree with @curtise, glad you like it but I hated it when I had to use it on a work machine at my old job. Without a touchscreen it just didn't make sense and there were enough little annoyances to turn me off of it. @PurplePawprints the tiled touch screen interface.
@PurplePawprints It's everything you don't like about Windows 8
Windows 10 is what you'll get after enough people pay Microsoft to alpha and beta test Windows 8, which came from people paying to alpha and beta test windows 7, which replaced the customer-financed alpha and beta tests of windows vista... and on and on. Quite a racket.
@duodec I disagree. Now if you said 95 was beta to 98 and ME was bata to XP and Vista was bata to 7 and 8 is bata to 10 I would agree.
@caffeine_dude I can't help thinking of "HEY BATA BATA BATA... SUH-WING BATA"
@caffeine_dude Admittedly some versions were less wretched than others. Thats not to say 'good' or 'great' but... meh. As opposed to utter dreck.
@curtise Beta Bata was it madder.
@caffeine_dude Why would they wanna skip 13? THAT'S the one I'm looking forward to.. Win13! (seriously though, thanks for the info).
…something I had no idea existed until I read about it on meh.
Skipping a number is lame.
And are we going to get a Win8 SP2 or is Win8 SP2 actually, Win10 aka WinX, not to be confused with RainX.
But Microsoft may give it away for free (you know like a SP). http://www.gamespot.com/articles/windows-9-will-be-free-for-windows-8-users-report/1100-6422642/
If they wanted to make the number bigger they should have gone with Windows 15. At least it'd make sense. Also, infoworld called it last year.... http://www.infoworld.com/article/2613504/microsoft-windows/microsoft-windows-microsoft-skips-too-good-windows-9-jumps-to-windows-10.html
@Pantheist That article's pretty amazing.
Shit I'm still on 3.1
@Moose You, sir have won the internet today.
@jsh139 As long as he still has a modem to actually connect to the internet ;)
@duodec Yeah, I'm waiting for someone to come in here and post a pic of their acoustic coupler.
@Moose Upgrade, man. 3.11 fixes a ton of issues. WFW FTW!
@Moose You may be joking, but I'm still using my 486DX4-100 with EMM, SCSI hard disks, DOS 6.20, WFW 3.11, Corel SCSI, MYM, and a really old version of Quicken to handle my finances. Still works just fine.
I usually outsource Windows.

@Starblind i thought windows 5 was windows 2000.
@no1 Yes, Windows 2000 = 5.0, XP = 5.1, Vista = 6.0, Win 7 = 6.1, Win 8 = 6.2, Win 8.1 = 6.3, Win 10 = 6.4.
@ChunkyBitz It's this that new age mathmatics I've been hearing about?
All of this is great but it is still a polished version of windows vista. Vista (Version 6.0) Windows 7 (version 6.2) Windows8 (6.3) Windows 10 (6.4)
@stonewall827 Close, but not quite: 7 is 6.1, 8 is 6.2, 8.1 is 6.3, 10 is 6.4.
Windows2 lol
Apparently this was to prevent an issue with crappy old code. People would check OS version like this:
So this is a naming scheme foresight issue in addition to just avoiding being next to 8.
@pkillboredom Anyone still running programs from the Windows 95/98 era deserves the problems they get from that crappy old code.
@SSteve well that's the thing. No win 9x user would ffeeling the effect. People on Windows 9 using crappily made applications would, as they would be treated as win 9x users.
Windows is crap, Linux comes to save the day!
