Oh, and whoever said “let’s put Aziz Ansari in there”, is an asshat. Personally, I really like Daniel Tosh if we are talking present day. But let us not forget the outrageously funny comedians from the past - like The Carol Burnett Show (and that whole crew).
@Club33NOS I’m not familiar with the guy myself but I do appreciate clean comedy. IMO it’s easy to be “funny” if you’re foul. That’s the go-to for way too many comedians these days.
@Club33NOS Would have gotten my vote if he were there. Saw him in person a couple of times. Lots of kids in the audience, and yet he’s so funny I cry from laughing so hard.
I couldn’t figure out how to pick, but I decided I’ve probably watched more on-screen minutes of Aziz Ansari than the others through his couple of shows and stand-up.
My two picks are not on the list- guess that makes me “one of those people”. 1) Sam Kinison - how can you not like his deranged little laugh. He died in the early 90’s - too soon IMO cuz he was so on point. 2) George Carlin - loved his seven dirty words list and WTFO.
@Shrdlu I apologize- I just scrolled up to the top to read the other comments and saw your remark on George Carlin. I typed before I read the other posts.
Jerry Seinfeld is still the King of Comedy. His stand up show is as good as it was 20 years ago. He holds the audience in his hand from the moment he walks out
I don’t like Aziz Ansari doing stand up, but I like his Netflix show Master Of None. Conversely, I loved Robin William’s stand up but never liked any of his comedy roles.
My current fav for stand up is Jim Gaffigan. I enjoyed Chris Rock back when he was doing stand up. And of course, Carlin was the best.
damn, close call between dave and louie but i went louie. all of these people are pretty great in my mind with the exception of sarah silverman who makes my skin crawl.
But … the comedian has a successful career doing comedy stand-up, skit, TV, film work.
Not quite buying it.
Yeah, there are people who I don’t think are funny, and I wonder how the hell they got their careers.
And yet they have good careers. Even as stand-ups (the toughest test, to me).
So they’re funny to someone. Or everyone who likes them has terrible taste or is mass brain-washed.
Whatever.
To me, if person x has a decent career, the whole “x is not funny” or “x is not a comedian” thing is a little suspect.
Even if I don’t get it. Even if the material makes me nauseated, it seems so lame. Even if I find the material a bit offensive (there are limits, obviously).
Comedy is where we work stuff out sometimes, or learn stuff sometimes.
@f00l Still the comment refers to the individual belief that said comic is not a good one. If you’re charismatic enough people will buy into your bullshit, you’ll make money. Look at Joel Osteen. How many millennials know who Steven Wright or Steve Landesberg are?
@f00l If that were the case then Kevin Hart would be on this list. He has an active career and has a couple of TV shows and still does comedy specials. I am not sure why he is not included.
If Joel Osteen marketed himself as a comedian, and did the club circuit, I might like him better.
As for the other excellent (imho) older performers … There’s a ton that’s great in millennial culture I know nothing of. I can hardly expect the millennials to worship baby boomer culture, esp since they are prob tired of hearing about it so much.
Why did I forget about Jeff Dunham? My first encounter with him was when I had a sore knee and couldn’t get away. My dear cousins played three of his shows back to back for me. I think I sprained my stomach muscles too.
I like pretty much everyone on the list, went with louie.
I’ve paid to see Lewis Black(back when he was still doing clubs, not theaters) , George Carlin, and Eddie Izzard.
one of my current favorites, has got to be Jimmy Carr.
love the dry delivery, and turn of phrase.
Oh, this guy (I looked for him on youtube). I used to watch him on 10 O’clock Live. Loved that show, on the first few minutes of which one comedian described Sarah Palin, then running for US president, as “the only horseman of the apocalypse that you could maintain an erection while looking in the eye”.
Everyone on the list is cool but Dave gets my vote.
Where is Don Rickles?
No Kevin Hart or Chris Rock…ok…then it’s Dave Chappelle.
This vote is meaningless. There are just too many good/great comedians, with just too many generational differences.
Ron White
I don’t know how many of them it was gonna take to kick my ass, but I knew how many they were gonna use.
Love Ron White: “You can’t fix stupid.”
Loved George Carlin (and I really miss him).
@2many2no The police happened to be pulling over everyone that was driving on that sidewalk…
@Oldelvis Clearly, that is profiling.
There’s no I don’t like any of these people.
Missing option: none of the above.
And feel no need to mention a different name. There seems to be a dearth of real comedians lately.
Either Bill Hicks or Mitch Hedberg. Sorry to be that guy but those two are the ones who do it for me.
@Bingo I’ll just put my comment right under yours since you beat me here… My favorite comedian not on this list is Mitch Hedberg.
@djslack @Bingo I’ll second (third?) the nomination of Mitch Hedberg.
for anyone not familiar with him.
Say what you will, but Kate McKinnon was fucking incredible in the Ghostbusters reboot.
@sanspoint Bahahahahaa! Oh wait…you’re serious?

Oh, and whoever said “let’s put Aziz Ansari in there”, is an asshat. Personally, I really like Daniel Tosh if we are talking present day. But let us not forget the outrageously funny comedians from the past - like The Carol Burnett Show (and that whole crew).
So, Amy Schumer is a comedian?
I feel like I’m “that guy” that is compelled to mention Brian Regan. Since I can listen to him around my kids, I enjoy his stuff.
@Club33NOS I’m not familiar with the guy myself but I do appreciate clean comedy. IMO it’s easy to be “funny” if you’re foul. That’s the go-to for way too many comedians these days.
@Club33NOS Came here to say the same. Love his stuff!
@Club33NOS Would have gotten my vote if he were there. Saw him in person a couple of times. Lots of kids in the audience, and yet he’s so funny I cry from laughing so hard.
@Club33NOS Jim Gaffigan is pretty PG as well and hilarious!
I couldn’t figure out how to pick, but I decided I’ve probably watched more on-screen minutes of Aziz Ansari than the others through his couple of shows and stand-up.
Bill Burr…Duh
Leslie Jones is not a comedian.
@Lrok she’s been doing stand-up since the late eighties. try again
No Maria Bamford? OK, I’ll vote for Amy Schumer.
@UncleVinny yes to maria bamford
@stevek216 I’ve only heard her voice acting work - any recs on where to start with her own comedy stuff?
@anemones if you have a streaming music service, she has a couple of albums out. Ask me about my new God is perhaps my fav, but I love them all.
@UncleVinny Beside her stand-up, I loved her stint as Debrie on Arrested Development! My second favorite guest star behind Charlize.
I sincerely the hope people voting for Amy Schumer are doing so sarcastically lol
Jim Gaffigan is the only mainstream comedian I pay attention to. Oh, and Ben Bailey from Cash Cab.
Jerry Seinfeld is still the King of Comedy. His stand up show is as good as it was 20 years ago. He holds the audience in his hand from the moment he walks out
@JoeSeadog and Jerry still thinks Cosby is the best comedian ( just not a good person).
@Oldelvis He is pretty funny.
Leslie Jones is hilarious!
Your list is defective. Samantha Bee should be on it.
@OldCatLady
/giphy wrong
I’ll throw in Doug Stanhope, if you’re into really horribly inappropriate stuff. Oh, and c’mon-Bert Kreichser!!
Robin Williams should be included in this list also.
@rtjhnstn Agreed!
Patton, for his work in Futurama and Rick and Morty.
Also for defeating the Nazis.
I gotta go with Jim Gaffigan too. Maybe not the hip or intellectual choice but when I need to curl up with a good laugh …
Modern comedians that no one has mentioned and are some favorites: Bo Burnham and Jim Jefferies
@LordSalem i don’t really think of bo burnham as a comedian so much but i really enjoy his shows/videos/songs.
@LordSalem Bo is great.
@LordSalem Country Song (Pandering) is one of my favorite things
I’m thoroughly infatuated with Kristen Wiig. I’d probably stalk her if I didn’t procrastinate to such a degree as I do.
@cranky1950 She is mad cute
damn, close call between dave and louie but i went louie. all of these people are pretty great in my mind with the exception of sarah silverman who makes my skin crawl.
This list seems about performers with active careers.
I don’t keep up with comedy, but I’ll mention TJ Miller, in case no one else does.
What’s with the various remarks on the order of “not funny to me” is somehow equivalent to “not a comedian”?
Comedy is famously culture- and outlook-based. Isn’t it?
@f00l No I think that comment is more indicative of the belief that the alleged comedian is not a good one.
@cranky1950
Hmmmm.
A given comedian is not funny to you. Or to me.
But … the comedian has a successful career doing comedy stand-up, skit, TV, film work.
Not quite buying it.

@michaelgj2002
There were a ton of performers left off. That’s why I’m glad people mention the ones they think outta be there. Happy to learn something.
@f00l But they love Gallagher.
@cranky1950
No accounting for what lands big and makes $, I guess.
I would have no clue what any particular demographic loves, unless I read an article somewhere.
John Mulaney and Bo Burnham.
@JoetatoChip yes Mulaney! Love him
I think your poll answers would be wildly different if you’d asked "who’s hottest of these comedians…
Why did I forget about Jeff Dunham? My first encounter with him was when I had a sore knee and couldn’t get away. My dear cousins played three of his shows back to back for me. I think I sprained my stomach muscles too.

@earlyre I like your taste, never heard of Carr, sounds like I might like him. Got a link?

How about Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. He is hilarious!!
@tinamarie1974 and oh so fluffy! I found him on Netflix.
@therealjrn my sister introduced me to him a few years ago and I am addicted
I quickly scrolled the comments and don’t see Steven Wright mentioned… I think he definitely should have made the list.
I loved Robin Williams, I like Tosh, Bo Burnhum…
