Who's still cooking turkey?
8I had one in the fridge instead of freezer… Cause its just a large chicken and 70 cents a pound and was pushing it for too long in the fridge. So I shoved it in the oven. 4 hours ago. The cats have been bitching/swirling at my feet and already got some. Now what?

That’s a pretty bird!
I’ll take a sandwich, please! (with tomato)
@Tadlem43 I had some sort of plan when I bought it… But it’s been in the fridge so long I finally just rubbed some salt mixes on it and tossed it in the oven. And I’m surprised it came out looking… Not terrible?
Now I just have a bunch of turkey…
Carve today. Freeze back half or so of the meat.
Turkey pot pie is amazing and delicious
@CaptAmehrican I’ve been meaning to attempt to make a pot pie type thing for a while… Did not connect that thought with the now available turkey and what may turn into gravy. Excellent suggestion.
Turkey gumbo. Make stock/broth with the carcass.
@mike808 the carcass went into the crock pot to simmer to start stock hours ago. There was some joint breaking to make it fit and keep the lid on… I’ll deal with that mess later. After work lol
Dammit, I left mine in the oven. I thought it was warm in here.
Thanks for reminding me.
Anyone interested in some jerky?
@mehcuda67 I set an alarm and checked it an hour before it went off. It was definitely cooked… More thourghly… than expected by the “15 minutes per pound” standard… But the skin was delicious and it’s not like I’m serving it to people so. Meh.
The skin on that looks so crunchy and yummy!
Lucky kitties. I love the image of them “bitching/swirling” at your feet!
@Kyeh the older one was found at like 1 AM black friday night and the only food in the office at midnight was Thanksgiving leftovers people had brought into work as a “it sucks we have to work Thanksgiving” potluck type deal. So there was nothing to feed him but turkey.
Idk if they has something to do with it but he was also on the counter and very much in the way. Besides just leading the crying. He likes turkey.
@unksol He probably has a simple answer for your question about what to do with all that turkey - just give it all to them, obviously!
Nomnomnom…!!!
@unksol (I don’t know what that black square is supposed to be. It just comes up on Meh, I didn’t put it there!)
@Kyeh probably the 2001 obelisk. I’m still annoyed people think obelisks are stainless steel.
@unksol
But what’s it doing in my message?
Mysterious!
I been cooking a turkey since Thanksgiving!!!
We do a salt and Jalapeno brine (lots of other stuff in there) and then coat it in oil and roast it in a paper bag. Amazing results.
@tightwad Do you do anything to the paper bag, like soak it in water first?
@Kyeh Nope, there is no need. As long as the paper doesn’t touch the heating element it won’t burn and it allow the skin of the Turkey to get nice and crispy but keeps the moisture in.
@tightwad Interesting! That’s the first time I’ve heard of this. I’ve used those cooking bags they sell, and I’ve heated bread in the oven in paper bags, but cooking a whole turkey is news to me. Thanks!
@Kyeh This is the recipe we use for roasting (after the brine) https://www.food.com/recipe/kidd-kraddicks-famous-brown-bag-turkey-267289
@tightwad Very cool - thank you! I like the way the recipe’s written, too.
So you teased us with the pic, where is our dinner invite? That will take care 9f your turkey meat “issue”
@tinamarie1974 that’s a long drive plus it’s in the fridge and cold… And we aren’t supposed to go near each other. And It was 184 when it came out… I suspect the breast would have been dry for carving but pot pie or soup or other options has potential.
@unksol
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@tinamarie1974 @unksol
Yeah, or turkey tetrazzini.
I took the skins off the breast we cooked on T-day and put them on a stoneware baking sheet then crisped them back up in the toaster oven. YUUMMMYY!
If I cook a whole bird I am a big proponent of spatchcocking… though this year I bought 2 breasts (which turned out to be just legless/wingless turkeys since the back was still attached). I did one T-day and will do the other later this winter, possibly in the smoker. It is currently residing in the freezer with the duck I bought from Aldi recently.
@chienfou I thought about spatchcocking but I just needed to deal with it so all the complicated plans got tossed out. There is still one in the freezer to plan properly with. But this one did not fit
I’m trying to find turkey thighs to put in the freezer, but evidently they’re not available after Thanksgiving.
Never liked turkey. Am I the only one?
@Vitarion do you like chicken?
I ask because I love turkey and hate chicken. People always tell me I am crazy because they taste the same. But I disagree. Anyway just curious if there is another one out there.
@tinamarie1974 @Vitarion
Chicken and turkey do not taste the same.
Can it. Just be sure to use a pressure canner.
@unksol Tonight I picked up one of those hot roasted chickens from the deli section at Safeway. When I got home my cat definitely noticed, and hung around all attentive. I thought “oh, he’ll love this” and cut up about 1/2 cup of choice morsels for him. HE DIDN’T EAT IT! I left it for a while and tried again - but no. What kind of cat doesn’t like roast chicken??? Little weirdo!
@Kyeh idk was it actually spicy? I had one who would come sniffing but you could never get her to eat anything but cat food. Or maybe tuna fish. But she was extremely timid. I usually just toss them some bits to a bowl. Especially when picking the carcass.
These two know what lunch meat is. And what the package sounds like. But I blame that development on the whiney turkey lover. And you know. Me being a sucker.
@unksol My last two cats were restricted to a limited-ingredient diet. One of them had pancreatitis and rather than try to keep him from eating regular food we just fed both cats the same stuff. So having a cat who can have other things is a novelty. But if I figure out what he really loves best I’ll probably just keep giving him that because it’s a drag giving him stuff and having it go to waste. I guess I need to give small bits at first.
Just finished the last of the Turkey Tetrazzini we made after T-Day. Popped it out of the freezer, thawed a day in the fridge then into the microwave. YUMMM!!
(All the folks I work with order out most meals, then they all say that my food looks (and smells) better than what they bought…)
Wife nixed another turkey. I still have a Costco cooked turkey breast for making turkey and noodles; that will have to do. Steaks for Christmas and chicken wings and other snacky foods for new years.
