@haydesigner what’s it like being a baseball? Does it hurt you to get hit with a bat? I’m amazed that you can type and sign up for accounts on the internet. Nice work!
Dusty Baker is waaaaay overrated as a manager. He has had so much insane talent on virtually every team he has managed, and yet… underperforms all the time. (Plus his reputation for destroying pitchers’ arms through overuse is well earned.)
Wow, there is a surprising amount of hate for the Astros. Is there a reason for this, or is it a generic sports rivalry sort of thing?
My grandma likes the Astros from when she lived there. My position on most sports is that the thing about Arsenal is that they always try to walk it in, so I’ve no idea what is going on other than that it’s the American teams baseball championship and calling it the World Series when baseball is also played in Japan is kind of insulting.
@jsfs Technically, it’s more an “International Series” since a Canadian team (Toronto Blue Jays) could be in the playoffs.
It would definitely be braggadocio if players were limited to American citizenship, but they’re not. MANY players from other countries in MLB, including on the Astros’ & Philies’ rosters
@ekw nope, no idea. For cheating scandals in major sports, I know about steroids (was most, now still most but more cleverly) and something about deflating footballs. I really don’t follow much there.
@phendrick that is somewhat better. I’m sure the name is kept as much for tradition as anything (and I wonder if anyone internationally had actually heard of baseball when the name was first introduced) but at least the people are getting to play each other even if not on their home teams.
@Kyeh@TheCO2 I’m sure that’s the case (i know less than nothing about the topic ), but only the first base stolen counts for free taco/good omen purposes, so any more will be strictly for viewer entertainment.
@ircon96@TheCO2 Oh! Well, you’re more up on that than I am! I just happen to like Altuve although it’s regrettable that he wore a wire, what a stupid scheme that was, but coming from a family where we’re all height - challenged, I like how his talent makes up for his only being 5’6".
@phendrick@werehatrack Maybe that’s why my Rockies can’t win. I like the name, but maybe it’s not lucky.
When the teams started putting the website names on the railings, I always read “cincinnatireds.com” as “cincinna-tireds” and hoped that subliminally they did too.
@phendrick Back in the days when Houston’s first football team was still in town, there were a lot of folks here that were 'Aints fans. And there were lotsd of fans of a certain team from That Place Up The Road A Piece, too. The reasons usually were different but related by “…they aren’t the Oilers”.
I hope the TV cameras all break and it can’t be televised. It would be more entertaining to watch the fans after that would happen than a boring football game where they spend most of their time standing around (to be fair baseball is like that too).
@daveinwarsh Well, you’re in luck! I heard the Asstros are offering a BBQ special this year… It’s served in a trash can. Purely coincidental, of course.
@Kyeh@llangley Went with a friend whose wife works for the Phillies. The party was for employees and their friends and family down in the Diamond Club. We ended up walking the whole track around the field. I was also in the bullpen. Got to go to the division clincher last Saturday, and to the NLCS games Saturday and Sunday. I was lucky enough they had the extra tickets. Still paid face value, but that was probably 1/10th what it was selling for. Unfortunately it’s not likely they’ll have any extras this week.
@cinoclav@Kyeh what a special event!! Some of my best memories with my parents involved staying at the Braves’ team hotel in Fort Lauderdale and going to their games against the Marlins in the 90s. You never knew who you would run into on the elevator or in the bar after the game. Good times indeed ️
@Kyeh@llangley That’s an awesome experience to have when young. I have a couple of very well known athletes that live nearby but I never run into them. Best known is probably Jason Kelce of the Eagles. Lives about 30 seconds down the road. They win the Super Bowl, I’m stopping by to say hi. Lol
@cinoclav I was wondering if @llangley ran into any Braves players at that hotel, but that’s pretty exciting that you got to see (and meet?) those guys!
@cinoclav@Kyeh yep, pretty much all of them at one point. We probably went 5 or 6 years running! Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz (oh my). Sid Bream. Chipper, David Justice, Lemke, Terry Pendleton, Javy Lopez, Steve Bedrosian, Kent Mercker, Mark Wohlers stand out in my memories right now but I’m forgetting a lot…We usually had a drink with the broadcasters after the games (Don Sutton, Pete van Wieren, Joe Simpson - Skip Carey usually a no-show) and even played a few games of pool with them. My Dad was a retired Marine — Don Sutton always called him “The General” and I was “the General’s Daughter”. What a special man he was – and what a special memory ️.
A lot of the players came in to have a couple of drinks. Some went straight out to party…probably South Beach since we were so close to Miami. As you might guess I wasn’t that young…mid 30s. I miss those days .
I usually don’t follow any of the big sports, and if pressed, i generally go for the underdogs, but i just found out the Phillies’ GM, Sam Fuld, is a local boy from southern NH, so that’s as good a reason as any. Go Phillies!!
Huh. Apparently it’s World Series time.
@shahnm I’ll add my vote to this one
As a lifelong baseball, fuck the cheating Astros.
@haydesigner what’s it like being a baseball? Does it hurt you to get hit with a bat? I’m amazed that you can type and sign up for accounts on the internet. Nice work!
Lemme tell ya @sicc574, it’s a ball!
Dusty Baker. It sucks he’s in the A.L. with Houston but he deserves to win a World Series.
p.s. Phuck the Phillies
Dusty Baker is waaaaay overrated as a manager. He has had so much insane talent on virtually every team he has managed, and yet… underperforms all the time. (Plus his reputation for destroying pitchers’ arms through overuse is well earned.)
The Bad News Bears.
Not the Astros, that’s for damn sure.
I live in Houston. I find it difficult to give a damn
And, honestly, until I saw the poll, I had no idea which teams were in the Series.
Mets
NYCFC vs Philadelphia Union match is Sunday at 8PM… hmmm will be EST instead of this EDT bullshit.
So I really should be hating on Philly… but seriously, FUCK THE ASTROS!
@baqui63 Watching it now!
Wow, there is a surprising amount of hate for the Astros. Is there a reason for this, or is it a generic sports rivalry sort of thing?

@jsfs so, you are either trolling, or truly unaware of the Astros cheating scandal from a few years back.
@ekw nope, no idea. For cheating scandals in major sports, I know about steroids (was most, now still most but more cleverly) and something about deflating footballs. I really don’t follow much there.

@jsfs @phendrick
It’s like the Miss Universe contest.
@jsfs well, there’s no reason you should care, but if you’re wondering, here is an overview.
here on wikipedia
@Kyeh Good point!

@TheCO2 Free taco!
@Kyeh @TheCO2 Good sign for the Phillies, allegedly, since most of the taco/base stealers’ teams over the years have gone on to win the Series!
@ircon96 @TheCO2
Of course, Altuve is a pretty good base stealer …
@Kyeh @TheCO2 I’m sure that’s the case (i know less than nothing about the topic ), but only the first base stolen counts for free taco/good omen purposes, so any more will be strictly for viewer entertainment.

Who?
@sjk3 You know, as in “turf” and “cheese steak”.
@phendrick
FIFY
@phendrick I like cheese steaks! I’m all in on Team Cheese Steaks.
@werehatrack Dis-astros was once somewhat appropriate, but IMO the best mangling of the old Astros’ name was “Lastros”. (That was a while ago.)
I previously had some friends who were simultaneously Lastros’ fans in the MLB and 'Aints fans in the NFL.
@phendrick @werehatrack Maybe that’s why my Rockies can’t win. I like the name, but maybe it’s not lucky.

Who cares. I like baseball when I’m at a game or if the tigers do well I’ll follow it but beyond that I’m kinda out.
Route for the under dog.
@edsa Root for them to divert them from their route to a rout.
I hope the TV cameras all break and it can’t be televised. It would be more entertaining to watch the fans after that would happen than a boring football game where they spend most of their time standing around (to be fair baseball is like that too).
Astros.
Because I like Texas and good BBQ.
Remember the Alamo.
@daveinwarsh Well, you’re in luck! I heard the Asstros are offering a BBQ special this year… It’s served in a trash can. Purely coincidental, of course.
Astros fans spotted at stadium concessions:
Checo Perez
Well, considering I was actually in the Phillies dugout Sunday evening after they clinched the NLCS, I’m pretty sure you know where my loyalty is.
@cinoclav Nice!!!
@llangley Couple of familiar faces showed up at the after party too. Such an amazing day.
@cinoclav @llangley How’d you get to do that!??
@Kyeh @llangley Went with a friend whose wife works for the Phillies. The party was for employees and their friends and family down in the Diamond Club. We ended up walking the whole track around the field. I was also in the bullpen. Got to go to the division clincher last Saturday, and to the NLCS games Saturday and Sunday. @cinoclav @llangley
So who DID you run into?
@cinoclav
/giphy stud!
@Kyeh @llangley You mean the players in that picture? It’s Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos, and Edmundo Sosa.
@Kyeh @llangley That’s an awesome experience to have when young. I have a couple of very well known athletes that live nearby but I never run into them. Best known is probably Jason Kelce of the Eagles. Lives about 30 seconds down the road. They win the Super Bowl, I’m stopping by to say hi. Lol
LEGOS! EGGOS! STRATEGO! AWESOME!
@cinoclav I was wondering if @llangley ran into any Braves players at that hotel, but that’s pretty exciting that you got to see (and meet?) those guys!

CONGRATS to the Astros!
@daveinwarsh Cheaters never win, my ass!
