@jsh139 This one is big for me too and I'm moving this weekend and am deeply considering having an electrician come out to rewire the place because this is the case at the new place.
@MEHcus The worst is that sometimes it can't be fixed. Case in point, three-way light switches (where two switches control the same fixture). They're wired so that at least one of the switches is upside down 75% of the time. Very annoying!
@jsh139 Many years ago I bought a new house, only to discover that the light switches were 50/50 on which direction was off. I spent most of one Saturday taking out half the switches and reversing them. The dining room light, with two switches, lost one to a totally unnecessary added hall light, because .. because .. um .. I wanted them all to be "off" in the same direction, dammit! OCD? Me?
@jsh139 Does it not bother anyone that someone installed five individual switch plates right next to each other rather than one plate with five switches?
@jsh139 This drives me crazy. When we bought our house they were all wrong. 4 hours and 20 switches later, I had them all fixed -- and all of them are right. If both are up or down, it's off. If they're different, it's on. Turning off all the lights is easy. Flip them all down and it's off.
@capguncowboy Can you explain how you you rewired/replaced the switches? We only have a hallway set that is mildly annoying, but our son bought a house with 4 different sets of these switches and it drives him crazy.
@gio There are two ways to fix 3-way switches. If you don't want to mess with the wires (dangerous unless you know what you're doing), just remove the plate, remove the two screws holding the switch in place and flip it upside down. That's it. The other method involves swapping the red and black wires on the back of the switch (don't move the white wire -- it is always connected in the same place. it's called a common). There are a lot of videos on Youtube that go into doing this, so I'm not going to make one. However, if you need a more in depth explanation, I could probably help.
@capguncowboy Thanks for your reply! We've changed out switches before, but never played with 3-way switches. I tried searching for information online, but didn't think to try Youtube because my dying graphics card is causing constant crashes. I think the visuals will help me because I'm having trouble understanding why reversing the switch (or wires) would coordinate the switches rather than just reverse the problem.
@gio Well, you don't switch the wires on both switches. Just swap the wires on one of the switches. I'll try to explain the reason. Basically, three way switches have three wires. There is a Common (which is the white or neutral wire) and two hot wires (the positive leads). One of your hot wires will be red, and the other will be black. The reason your switches are wrong is because they are wired differently. One has the red wire in port 1, and the other has it in port 2. Basically, by swapping the red and black on one of the switches, you make it the same as the other. Then when both switches up or both switches are down, the circuit will be broken. Only when they are different (one down, and one up) will the light(s) come on.
@capguncowboy OK, now that makes sense to me. Thanks for drawing me a picture with words! How about circuits with 3 switches to control one fixture? Our son has one of those, and I'm wondering how that wiring looks, but I'm guessing you just make sure that they are all wired the same?
@gio I have never wired 4-way switches but as long as they're all weird the same it should work correctly. It doesn't matter much how they're wired for three-way, but I've read that it does with four-ways or they won't work. If they're wrong, you might be better off just flipping them over and putting them back
@capguncowboy I'm finding some videos now; it helps searches just to know what the switches are called. I like the hint to take pictures of what the wires look like before you start so that if something doesn't work you can at least put it back the way it was. I usually don't think of that until AFTER I've taken something apart and find a stray bit I can't identify. :-)
Everything in that drove me crazy. I'm going to have to go with #21, hard butter on soft bread. Why are there restaurants that give you bread with butter packets they keep refrigerated at all times? Any attempts to warm the butter in your hands prior to use are fruitless. It makes me weep in the inside over the missed deliciousness and then I won’t patronize their establishment again.
While not on this list... having to click the Meh button even when I order something irks me. My universe is slightly off kilter when I do that. I bought it. So, yeah, not meh. But, if I don't click the Meh button, my Meh streak comes to an end. So, meh. Aaaaarrrrrghhhhhhh!
A friend posted this pic on FB today. It's a piece mounted on the wall in their hotel room. I immediately thought of this thread. This is exactly the same type of thing that would drive me bat-shit.
There is so much in here that drives me insane. I'm gonna go with #3
The OCD in me says #6, for sure!

@rockblossom That's some dedication right there. Bravo!

@Kleineleh Now I can't unsee this.

@capguncowboy I did that to my house too. My wife didn't understand why it was needed.
@hamjudo pffffft - wives. I understand completely.
@hallmike pfffft husbands. Totally clueless.
@Kidsandliz huh? What do you mean? I don't get it.
@capguncowboy that's genius... i didn't even know that was an option
@hallmike LOL
@capguncowboy Can you explain how you you rewired/replaced the switches? We only have a hallway set that is mildly annoying, but our son bought a house with 4 different sets of these switches and it drives him crazy.
@Kleineleh They aren't separate switch plates. They are snap-together modular plates http://www.smarthome.com/leviton-pse8-w-snap-together-end-panel-duplex-white.html. I used to have one for a three-gang switch next to my kitchen sink. But it was hideous and I hated it with the heat of a thousand suns so I found a real switch plate that fit the configuration.

@Kleineleh It bothers me more that only one of those screws is in the proper six o'clock position.
@SSteve ahh, I see. Somehow that's worse, though. That is a really hideous concoction
@Trillian Great. Now that's gonna bug me too
@capguncowboy OK, now that makes sense to me. Thanks for drawing me a picture with words! How about circuits with 3 switches to control one fixture? Our son has one of those, and I'm wondering how that wiring looks, but I'm guessing you just make sure that they are all wired the same?

Yeah #9 drives me nuts. Happens sometimes with dress shirts at work. Especially because our sinks are also #14.
BuzzFeed.
@Fej Agreed. BuzzFeed and Upworthy are two sites that I wouldn't mind see go into the ether...
@BillLehecka @Fej You won't BELIEVE what these underprivileged sharks do to a pod of baby seals!
@JonT 19 reasons why this reply rules. Number 6 will change your life!
MUST MARK ALL EMAIL AS READ.
Unread email = someone might be looking for me or needs something from me.
I enjoy doing #32; it's just so satisfying. I never feel like I'm getting enough Kit Kat if I eat one stick at a time.
@darksaber99999 - No! Stay away from my candy! I was going to choose 32 and 13. I'll bet you eat the whole oreo in one bite, as well. Hmph
@KDemo Well, yeah. Oreos are bite-sized.
@darksaber99999 most things are bite-sized if you try hard enough.

@TimWalter I'm sure that's done on purpose! Just another experiment in the mediocre microcosm.
DAMN YOU USELESS SHREDDED PAPER TOWEL!
I have OCD issues and many of these irk me, but I think that toaster in #12 is delightful. Wheeeee, toast!
@bluedyn My cats would love this game !
@bluedyn Looks like it's only partially toast - one end of the slice is still raw bread and the other end is charcoal. Three tastes in one!
@hallmike @ceagee These sound like features, not defects. I'm looking forward to the Meh sale on these. I claim the TM on "Wheeeee, toast!"
Anyone remember 'raw toast' from early Letterman?
31 may end up for sale on here in the future. All the rest of them can go enjoy the nine circles of hell.
That doughnut (not sure which #) would drive me insane! You buy something that looks good just to see it ruined.
Number 4: just drop an egg in the hole and cook an Egg in the Basket. Delicious.

@Bingo -Ewwww. Good luck sleeping in that room. Sad, though. It might have been kind of cool.
