@Pantheist From 1983 to 1991, I used to sell loads of this stuff in a retail store. I could easily make my money back in the first hour if it was 30 years ago.
Today, when I ask my friends about phone services that they have, most of them use their wireless as their primary phone line. A wired phone is just too expensive (and you still have to pay for long distance or get a plan). It only costs around $11 per month but after taxes is over $30. Unless you work from home, nobody wants to pay that in addition to having a wireless phone.
I work from home and use Ooma for about $4/month. I’m constantly faxing things for my neighbors Wired phones are going away like sending personal letters though snail mail.
@Pantheist Copper is cheap. It’s about $2.61 per pound so you’d need about 10 pounds of copper to get your $25 back. That would take you days of work to strip all those wires to get that much copper. The wires need to be flexible so they use stranded 24 gauge wire (0.511 mm). At least there’s 4 strands for RJ14 but that quadruples your work.
@cengland0 You don’t have to strip out the copper wire. Wire scrap dealers buy rems and salvage in bulk and have an automated process for stripping it down. OTOH, they also don’t pay $2.61/lb.
@cengland0 I used to sell all my rems and salvages to a local salvage company. I don’t recall what the compensation was, but I haven’t retired yet, so it certainly wasn’t much.
This would have been… about mid-90’s through about 2003. IIRC, I was getting about $25 for a 80 gallon drum. No idea what the weight was. The salvage co. would pick up the full, and drop off an empty drum. Not exactly what I’d call a “profit center” but better than sending it to a landfill. I’d tot the salvage take for the year, and use that amount to buy my staff gift cards for the holidays. Kind of a win win win.
Hmm reading the first article and the guy says you might get an empty ipad box… maybe that is where meh gets some of the broken junk in fuko’s - buys what the wholesale buyers were going to throw out. Oh wait. Don’t want to make that suggestion to meh buyers in case they aren’t already doing that. Shhhhh.
@walarney Actually stuff is not going very cheaply there for the most part as I just looked. For example 16 pounds of knives is over $300 and it doesn’t take all that many knives, looking at the pile to reach 16 pounds. Like the one knives and other sharp objects… although the lighted “open” sign is only at $15… maybe they got those signs they gave in a fuko there?

@cengland0 aw, oh well. Dunno how much is in phone lines, but the copper might be worth something if anyone is close and has a truck.

@cengland0 I seee, for some reason I thought it was closer to $4/lb. Either way you’re right, not worth the work.

@ruouttaurmind although it is true you do not have to strip the wires, you get more money per pound if you have a pure copper content.
If you give them copper with insulation on it, that will reduce your salvage value significantly.

I spent a few weeks one summer stripping scrap wire by hand. Mostly 2/0 to 500 MCM, sunny days and a sharp knife made it easy enough to be worthwhile.

I guessed they got it from unclaimed mail auctions. (Previously in Atlanta, but now online. https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm)

@dashcloud That’s a lot of crap.

Holy profit margins, batman.
@dashcloud I don’t even recognize Woot anymore.
If any of those appliance hoards crops in the Jax area and one of you bites, I could use a Microwave Oven.
