Where else do you hang out on the interwebs?
6We all ended up here somehow. Some people found us from our Kickstarter, others followed us over from Woot, and still others found us by coming across some random link on a site they frequent that many of us may not know about. Before there was Meh you all hung out in different places and I imagine you still do.
So let's hear it. Is Meh your internet home or just a place you come for a few laughs on occasion? What sites do you frequent the most and why? Are there any places out there you think we should all check out?
For myself, I pretty much exclusively visit sports sites for my favorite teams. I frequent a few blogs that track recruiting information for my beloved (and horribly painful to watch at the moment) Texas Longhorns, a blog that covers all things Texas Rangers, as well as a few stops here and there for the Mavs and Cowboys - though I get most of that information from the world of Twitter. Outside of those, Meh truly is my internet home.
We try to keep our forums clutter freeish and typically don't openly advocate pimping other sites but for this thread, all is fair game. Tell us all about the sites we should check out and where you love to visit the most.

Shirt.woot forums.
T-shirtforums
In the past, PPGWorld (since defunct) and going waaaaaay back to the days of usenet, alt.tv.animaniacs.
@narfcake Given your username, that last one doesn't surprise me.
i thought it was just Meh and animated gif sites. there's more to this interwebs thing?
@carl669
@carl669 And don't forget Youtube
I read a lot of my news over at Yahoo. Other than that, here, Woot, and work/school related sites.
Google+
j/k
@katylava Wait - I really am I Google+ a lot.
When I am avoiding doing work, it is either here or Jalopnik.
Still super-active on woot, engadget for tech news. Reddit once in a while. But mostly here and woot.
@ACraigL Your shirt.woot experience isn't complete without a catshirt!
@ACraigL Congrats on your mixed slogan shirt! I just saw it and ya done good!
@mehbee Thanks! So excited!!
Meh is probably my "home".. I have a facebook, but don't prefer it for anything other than sharing pictures of my kids..
I'm also big on sports sites.. Mostly Steel City Insider, and sometimes Steelers Depot. Every Mon, Wed, and Fri I have to check xkcd and Penny Arcade. In the old days I was pretty active on slashdot, but not for a long time now.. That's about it, other than wherever google leads me.
Wal. My flip board news feed. Instagram. Cnet. Deals Woot. Various tech sites. I am something of an internet tramp. Here. I gave up on The Chive for now. Yahoo news sometimes when I am feeling self loathing.
Meh is home.
Shotgun approach. Anything fascinating to me.
News aggregators. (Examples: Trove, Pocket, Twitter - I use it for news/interest alerts, not social purposes).
Special interest sites: Multiple design/innovation sources, tech sites, automotive, Instructables, Fine Homebuilding/Woodworking, small home/off-gird/energy efficiency sites, and many others.
Facebook and Skype primary to connect to distant friends/family.
For deals, the sellers themselves (Amazon, NewEgg, NewEgg Flash...), Meh, DealNews, and to a much lesser extent various other daily deal sites. Used Deals.woot a fair amount until they got taken over by spam, trolls, and a shortage of moderation.
Dangerous way to burn time: the YouTube chain of never ending "similar interest" videos.
@RedOak Damn YouTube and their "similar interests" videos...
A bunch of sites that we'll neatly distill down into the category of nerd news. Although I kind of miss what Gizmodo and Engadget used to be and wish I could find a site that just had interesting writeups of new electronic stuff... kind of like Uncrate except everything would either have a USB port or an antenna.
@medz - Nice.
basically just here now. used to frequent a game forum, but the game has long since hit its long and slow decline.
I comment on a news site but I don't consider that hanging out, really.
Mostly I just hang out here. Facebook is just to keep in touch with a couple long distance friends. I try to remember to get on Instagram, but definitely not using it as often as I used to, same with Flipboard. There's a knitting site, and that's about it.
I still can't shake the imgur monkey that seems to live on my back.
@jaremelz Imgur is gold.
@jqubed Good old LNI.
@jaremelz LNI?
@jqubed Late Night Imgur, when shit gets decidedly more strange. You can search lni, but you might not want to!
@jaremelz Oh, see I mostly use the Android app, so things like "searching" are unavailable there.
@jqubed Ah,in this case it might be saving you from having to bleach your eyes. I love it.
Reddit... I admit it.
and for those who hate the reddit format check out
http://upvoted.com
@thismyusername I spend lots of time on Reddit. It gets better when you find the good subs and unsubscribe from the defaults. I like /r/nba and /r/artisanvideos
@trilliongrams yea customizing is the key, make the reddit you want basically. :)
I'm almost always on a music site:
Turntable.fm (dead) -> Plug.dj (dead) -> Dubtrack.fm
When I really need to waste time I'll head to Reddit where I help mod a 100k+ sub which can get crazy at times.
http://www.clubpenguin.com
I was strongly checking
Lifehacker.com
Slickdeals.net
Redmondpie.com
Engadget.com
Tuaw.com
Since I've started in IT... RIP TUAW... Redmondpie is crappy popups now... so I kind of stopped going there... backwards from what you'd want with ads...
Engadget hasn't been the same since TUAW was absorbed... Lifehacker occasionally...
Now it's mostly here and slickdeals... my wife says I have a shopping addiction... my answer is retail therapy...
If I am at home and I actually have downtime (and the stars align to allow my internet to offer speeds faster than 128k), I usually browse the first few pages of reddit.
While at work, I check here, random news sites for baseball news, and a few roller coaster/theme park forums. If I get really bored, I call up TheOldReader.com where I have a bunch of webcomic rss feeds at my fingertips.
Thinking about it, I have a lot of downtime at work and a very lazy boss.
meh is my mainstay, imgur is addictive, random forums/message boards that align with current interests, woot, facebook, random news sites...
@Thumperchick hmmm... you made me realize that I now consider things like Facebook and twitter to be "apps" specifically, and not websites. weird.
@Lotsofgoats If I have a tab open for any of the others, I have a tab open for facebook as well. Same with imgur. While their primary use is as an app at this point, I tend to spend more time on the site versions.
@Lotsofgoats Semi-relevant: 'Millions of Facebook users have no idea they're using the Internet'
@Lotsofgoats Same here, I didn't even consider listing them in my top places visited on the world wide web
As far as 'social' experiences, and not just the internet as a whole, I spend quite a lot of time here these days, but next in line is probably Flickr. Flickr has gotten decidedly less social since all the UI changes took place, but there's still some small sense of community. I used to hit a few very specific subreddits, but I've kind of paused on that front. I visit a few specific forums - for the audio amplifier I use, for the cameras I shoot, that sort of thing. I do the Twitter a bit. Can't really think of much else.
I don't have anywhere to go... I'll guess I'll stay here.
@Barney thepurplestore.com?
@brhfl Not too often. They're kind of expensive.
@Barney So, to recap: purplestore - rarely the right price, always the right color; meh - rarely the right color, often the right price. Who will step in and fill this affordable purple niche?!
@Barney http://www.purple.com/purple.html ?
@Sabre99 Uh, you want me to hang out all by myself looking at a purple page on the internet?
Here's A through G on autocomplete:
amazon
buzzfeed
calendar.google
docs.google
espn
facebook
gmail
@dave that could actually be a pretty fun topic in and of itself…
@dave I can't help but wonder what H is now. For continuities sake, mine is hotels.com
@brhfl totally agree. Start it.
Google News is my home page (and wherever that takes me). Meh, of course. Words with Friends, Bear cams in season.
Every few days to weekly: library, bill pay, The Onion, Huff Post, FB to keep up with family, APOD, PNSN, various games and lately image and gif sites.
If anyone's really looking to waste some time, there's Pointless.com, Grouchy Rabbit, Fark, Straight Dope, Consumerist, and Nerdist, to name a few. I apologize in advance.
I never posted on a forum before about this time last year. I don't remember why, but I started reading the forums over at Woot and they seemed like fun people. I even bought a bag of crap and learned how to post the contents. I spend less time there as days go by- they can be very cliquey and sometimes I feel like I'm talking to myself. They have these really cool gif hunting contests, but you can win one a week so the same people keep winning (looking at you @AcraigL) which is a bit frustrating. You guys are more friendly and accepting, even with your potty mouths. Thanks.
@sammydog01 I apparently have two skills. Photoshop and Gif Hunts. You can keep your beauty awards and MENSA memberships for yourself.
I understand about the clique comment, but I think it comes down to a handful of people that are on all the time, so they get to know each other better. And when that happens, there is automatic appearances of exclusion due to private jokes and whatnot. IMO, most are good people and would not knowingly make you, or anyone else, feel that way.
PS. I won the gif hunt yesterday.
PPS. The gif hunts are fun to do even if you don't get the crap (which still is, by the way, usually crap).
@sammydog01 As far as forums, your story is my story started at Woot. Have had some fun with them, mostly team stuff, found Meh and people have been so nice to me. I've had three times the interaction here than I ever had at Woot..
@sammydog01 I feel bad that I mite be in an offending clique. sry.
@sammydog01 It's cliquey here too. Have a view on things different than theirs? Be prepared for belittlement.
@mick Agree. Not about the belittlement, but it's already cliquey, just as Woot. I don't see how it can be anything but. When you have a group that's here basically daily, they know each other's likes and dislikes and all the background. It's not deliberate, it just is.
@ACraigL Yes, you beat me at both recently. :) I know they are nice folks. I know that gif hunts are fun just to play, and I know that the prizes for gif hunts are not even crap, but the opportunity to pay 10 bucks for crap. I still hate to lose to the handful of people playing week after week. I will still stop by and lose and be frustrated.
@no1 You, sir, are awesome and I hope you never change. The folks at "everything but woot" have always been great and made me feel at home.
@mick @pooflady I think the difference may be that no one has been at Meh much over a year. I still see new people becoming major contributors. As for belittlement, yep that's true. I remember some poor lady that wandered in and asked why Meh didn't have more than one item a day. I felt sorry for her. The culture here is rougher. Swing on by the "take me away" thread sometime- it's just for fun.
@mick I'm sorry that you have felt belittled here. I don't think it was intentional. I remember being new and with a limited vocabulary of "I love purple". Some thought I was a bot, but I never felt belittled.
Thank you for your comment. I will try to make new commenters (and others) feel a little more welcome.
@Barney It wasn't about me so much, but instances I saw when some folks had their own differing point of view.. They were pretty much ganged up on, with comments meant to only humiliate them. Anyways, purple flowers are my favorite flowers! It's my birthstone too.
@mick Aww, I love purple.
Besides here, I waste my time on Mental Floss, ApartmentTherapy, Deadspin and TSN.ca (Canada’s version of ESPN, for the far superior hockey coverage.) Meh is the first and only place I have ever commented, though. The “K” in front my name gave me the courage to dip my toe into the murky waters of internet commenting. I used to lurk on Woot, but never worked up the nerve to post there. Props to @JonT for creating and fostering a welcoming environment here.
@Trillian thanks for the shoutout, I did see it! 😊
Besides here, I'm a big fan of Popehat.com (who knew the law could be so entertaining sometimes?), thebloggess.com (such a funny lady with a great taxidermy collection, and amusing stories), Consumerist.com, Krebsonsecurity.com, and YouTube.
@dashcloud I forgot about Jenny! I adore her.
@jaremelz She's got a brand new book out- Furiously Happy (about her struggles with mental illness mostly)
@dashcloud I am hoping to pick up a copy. I love her conversations with Victor.
@dashcloud I heard her talking about that on NPR this week. Love her slant on life.
@KDemo So do I. "Knock knock motherfucker " has become a mainstay in my family. Well, always out of my mouth...but still.
@jaremelz - She talked about that - you would probably enjoy the interview.
@jaremelz Any plans to get your own Beyonce metal chicken?
@dashcloud I would love one! I do, however, have this guy. His name is Wohnwohn (Ron Weasley ). A fellow Bloggess follower sent him to me.
He's hanging out on his best buddy, PussPuss.
Here, Wetbike.net (for my Wetbike hobby), slickdeals, a few shopping sites like craigslist and sometimes Drudge when I want to be depressed by the news.
Facebook, Twitter, Imgur, Yik Yak
@jqubed And does a fine job of running the Final Four pool on EBW.
http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/
It's like Meh--except it's Catholic, and without the deals and profanity, and better designed.
@phatmass Not a Catholic, but looks interesting. Couldn't pass what looked like the really simple not-a-robot/security check tho!
@phatmass so just like meh, without the fun?
@phatmass Wait, so the mass in your name refers to the religious ceremony, not the description of how much matter an object contains?
@Thumperchick Fuck no!
@phatmass A forum for cat lovers?
@Nuke So tasty, you'll think it's chicken.
@jqubed I've heard you have to soak the meat in water overnight to take away some of the gamy flavor.
@jqubed I take it back, you'd do well with LNI ;)
@jaremelz Eight years in news will do that to you.
@jqubed I'll bet you can no longer be surprised by anything.
@jaremelz Pretty hard to be now. It's not a good thing. It's easy to assume and expect the worst of people. You hear of something terrible and now it's just, like, "oh, this again?"
@phatmass I like a lot of your shirt designs! I'm a protestant, so they don't all work for me.. but they're fun :)
@phatmass
News junky here, so I do the twitter thing and NYT a lot. Still pop in to play some random word games at Woot. I often end up looking at something that takes me somewhere else that gets me to another site, and so on until I no longer remember what I was looking for or trying to check out in the first place.
IOW I often have no idea where I am or where I have been.
@ceagee That happens to me on Wikipedia
I'm a news junkie, so several of the networks; woot.ebw; facebook; trivia crack when I can find someone to play; twitter; some comics that aren't in my newspaper; and of course meh.
@pooflady //note to self: pooflady likes crack
@pooflady I love Trivia Crack if you ever want to play
@no1 You also
@mehbee I'd love to but I don't know how to start a game with someone who's not a friend. Feel free to do that.
Hanging out on the Web is mostly dead compared to what could be found 10+ years ago. If you ask me, Meh.com is a tiny life raft in an ocean of content garbage.
I always start my day with Bing. I love the photos. My mainstays are Meh, Facebook, sometimes Twitter, and anywhere I'm pointed to something about the Walking Dead. Those are really the only places I go often to read or socialize. I am a frequent shopper on Amazon, Meh, Woot, 13deals and RIPT. Lots of the sites y'all have listed look interesting and I'm going to try them out..when I have time.
And Pinterest, how could I forget Pinterest??
Arstechnica.com, reddit, slickdeals, gardenweb (now under houzz... ), gearslutz and marketwatch
Facebook. Because that's where most of my internet friends, who became real life friends, hang out. And I'm talking with cousins I haven't seen since 1986 (I'm not one for keeping in touch, part of moving every two to three years as a child).
I used to hang out on some cat forums, even ran one, but over time, people left and didn't come back. The only ones who stayed around were the ones who were badly in need of a face punch. So, I quit going so often.
Facebook and Meh are my main visits. Oh, and http://www.arcamax.com/healthandspirit/lifeadvice/ . I love reading the advice columnists.
Lots of Reddit.
And Meh. Sometimes there isn't that much activity going on here, so I look elsewhere when I'm looking for things to discuss. I really wish there was more here.... ah the good ol' days of deals.woot
@luvche21
@ceagee ...am I missing something?
@luvche21
If you build it they will come ! : )
You want more post more. Start some threads !
@ceagee maybe I'm just a land thread starter, but about half (probably less) of the threads I have started never received any responses, or only a couple responses. Which is another reason why I don't like how the list of threads are sorted.
... Not trying to complain, but that's how it's turned out
@luvche21 give me and some other folks a shout out ( i.e. an @ ) and I'll swing by your thread. I bet others will too. Some days I go further down the list of ones I haven't read more than others ;-)
@luvche21 Timing is a factor, too. It's pretty quiet on the weekends, and by the time people get back it can be a mile down. Also, I think midnight Eastern is not the best time for a new thread, people reacting to the new item, video, poll, etc.
I am on ThinkGeek A LOT.
I also check Meh every morning at 8:00. I am on board the hype train to Fallout 4, so I am always on Youtube watching the e3 trailer to it. I am also on Shirt.Woot. :P
Ah where to begin...
I used to love Reddit, I moved over after the Digg v4 apocalypse and I know everyone says this about every site, but it really went downhill over the last few years.
I used to love reading the comments and learning something new from a huge group of people with different interests and expertise. Eventually the comments became as interesting and useful as pure garbage. It got to the point where I could predict the top comment with ~80% success because it was always some version of the same tired, unfunny, rote memes. I stick to a very small, niche set of subreddits now. Mainly /r/Diablo, /r/RocketLeague, and /r/CustomMagic (people make really interesting and well-designed custom MTG cards there @sohmageek).
I started going directly to Imgur for my image content but I can feel the same shift happening there too and I'm less and less interested in their comments and content in general.
I keep my Facebook friend count pretty low and honestly finding myself mainly using it to read The Onion and Clickhole articles at this point.
I've gotten much more into Twitter recently but I still feel like I'm missing out if I don't read every. single. Tweet. So sometimes I get behind and then I'm replying to 2 day old Tweets and they might as well be 100 years old.
Pinterest for recipe ideas. Instagram mainly just to follow The Rock.
Other than that it's kind of wherever those sites take me.
@JonT awwww shieeeettttt you're MTG too? cuz I'm recently MTG and it's by far the nerdiest thing about me now. let us nerd.
@JonT The Brogue forum recently(ish) moved over to Reddit, always like watching the contests, the wonderful ways in which people die, etc…
@Lotsofgoats @jonT how are you guys liking the new Full art lands? get any of the expeditions?
Here once or twice a day, FB to see what crap my right wing and left wing friends are propagandizing and to stay in touch with far flung family and friends. Then some of my hobby/business related and tech boards or apps and CNBC to see how much money I lost today Oh and Twitter because I love what people say in 140 characters or less!
I'm a reader. I'm delighted to have found the meh forum and read almost every topic posted. So many of the posters are witty and I end up laughing out loud a lot here. I like jeopardy!, so I go to jboard.tv. I frequent the democratic underground forums but not as much as a few years ago. I lurk at eschatonblog.com because I know a poster there. I look at facebook, mostly in the evening. I'm a member of a couple of groups that identify plants and one just for tree id. I like longform.org and newyorker.com. Also, bittersoutherner.com because I live in the bitter south. Starting around February or March every year I hang out at Beleef de Lente, a site in the Netherlands with nest cams of falcons, owls, storks and various other birds/raptors. I keep a tab open to google translate the commentary and discussions for that one. I could spend hours (if I had any extra ones) surfing around youtube and wikipedia. I have followed and commented on a site by an Atlanta woman named Jenny for several years, myfavoriteandmybest.com. I recommend ScienceBasedMedicine.org, RetractionWatch.com and SouthernFoodways.org for learning amazing shit.
@AnotherDawn you may want to check out [unofficial] mehTV - they're a trivia game cast and they play jeopardy from time to time. @Brooklyn11218 can hook you up with details if you're interested.
@AnotherDawn You sound like a person I would have liked to know. So interesting/interested.
@KDemo Thank you for the kind words. I suspect I sound more interesting on paper than I truly am. Anyway, I find so many things interesting, I never get bored. Thanks again.
@Thumperchick I will check it out. Thanks!
@AnotherDawn Where in the south are you from?
@mehbee Hi. The land mass between Louisiana and Alabama.
I am a gamer so I hang out on Kongregate where I play wartune, still some on cybernations, but it got really boring, used to be staff on an old text based mud, yeah, it's still around.
I read some web comics, not as many as I used to, but weregeek is awesome.
MEHcus, good call on being a Mavs fan, even if we're not doing so well right now. Gotta enjoy our last few years of Dirk.
This is my internet home (and I am more than a little homesick). I visit other places, but those other places don't have these people. Thus, they aren't even worth mentioning.
@christinewas You being here makes me happier to be here
@christinewas - I hereby rescind my post and legally change it to this.
@christinewas It's great to have you here!
@christinewas It wouldn't be the same (for me at least) without you :)
Flightaware.com and liveatc.net now. Mostly drift around here and there since cruel.com died a slow agonizing death.
Post some at the rather dead deals.woot.
I read but mostly don't post elsewhere.
I have an FB account i have not logged into for 2-3 years, mostly cause i hate the corp parent. So i found out last night that my niece got engaged, not from FB, but from our family fantasy football thread (my niece tends to win the league).
Comments were made to the effect that she doesn't get to be all happy and get a nice ooh-ahh ring and wedding AND win the league, that's just too much goodness for one person. So, new league rule in our family: if you get engaged, all your keepers become free agents. Seems fair, doesn't it?
@f00l Yes.
