When @ceagee asked @Barney how she got started here, she said, "It's kind of complicated and very boring." Well... I want to know all of your long, boring stories of how you got to the forums here at meh (& mediocre.)
@narfcake I think someone should do a study on people's interpretations of words/names when they have only ever read them and never heard them, and maybe it's already been done.
I was just talking to a coworker whose brother always pronounced Adobe with a silent E on the end and long O (like Adobe is pronounced, but without the E at the end).
They were selling a shirt and told people to share. My dad shared. I started visiting the site until I found something I wanted to buy and became a VMP. I lurked. I started talking more. The end.
@christinewas They were selling a shirt and told people to share. YOUR dad shared. I started visiting the site until I found something I wanted to buy and became a VMP. I lurked. I started talking more. The end.
Thanks for making this one so easy for me to answer :)
@christinewas Same story. Except insert "friend" shared. Unless that friend is your dad, then we can just use the "your dad" thing above and skip the rest of this nonsense.
I think it was @Carl669 on Woot! forums. I can't quite remember - my short-term memory has left me. All I know is someone mentioned Snapster and Dave started a new Deal-A-Day site and here I am!
I saw the posts on deals.woot about this new site, and jumped on the Kickstarter then, but I don't think I joined the forums until the Meh forums launched.
I genuinely do not recall. It went something like this....One day I was like "Well shit; my life is so blasé.... I will craft a marginally less meager existence on an internet forum."
Fast forward. BOOM. Here I am and suck to be y'all 'cause I am here to stay. Muahahahaha.
somebody posted a link to mediocre being a thing over in deals.woot and I made an account but never really used it, then I think I got kicked over to meh via a kinja link and here we are
@starblind told me about this Kickstarter that I just had to help fund, been here since day 0 and while there are times when nothing interests me there are times when I'm more active. Meh. (BTW Meh was one of only 2 Kickstarters I've donated to. the other was geordi laforge, what can I say I loved reading rainbow)
Back in November I saw some recommendation for cheap headphones that I picked up for the teenager. It was a bit longer before I stopped lurking, so I haven't really been around long. I contemplate lurker status regularly, but who am I kidding, I love you weirdos.
I think I've said this all before, but maybe not all together and certainly not with this exact collection of characters:
My wife got a job working for a family and came home and asked me, "So, do you know what Woot is?" I did. But I didn't purchase a lot of stuff from them and never really got into the community. My first Woot was two of these t-shirts when she and I were still dating. Two years later, I bought this dumbass remote. A couple of years after that, I bought my kid this kickass Pi(e) hoodie. My most recent purchase (this year) was a cool Lytro, based on a rec by @editorkid. I guess I buy random shit from Woot every two years.
Anywho, the baby daddy worked for Matt at Woot and they were starting something new. I got more info and looked up the Mediocre site. It looked promising, but at the time the forums seemed to be mostly employees and insiders and, honestly, boring as hell. We kickstarted. And bought a few things. Really, I wasn't much active in the forums for a while. But something caught my eye.
Damn, for all of those words, I don't actually remember any of the specifics about what brought me into the forums. Huh.
Yeah, so I discovered I could say "fuck" here. You had me at "fuck," I guess. Eventually I said "fuck" so much and denied having sexual relations with a goat enough that y'all made me goat. What the fuck is up with that?
I lurk, but I'm not committed enough to stalk. Sometimes at seemingly random moments (the word for today is "random") I splurt out a bunch of words. But there were only a few months (one was when I was goat) when I really paid attention. I'm discovering as I age and as civilization descends deeper into the Age of Big Data that mostly not paying too much attention to the general flow is a good thing, unless you're a computer. My personal organic computational functions are optimized for deep dives into random bits and lots of surfing across the rest.
@carl669 When I led a testing department, some of the folks I worked with had a stamp made for me that says "Testing Department Seal of Approval," because I was notorious for withholding final approval (we met our production deadlines, I guess maybe with caveats from me). I've still never used it. I need to find it. Anyway, it was kind of a joke and we were all seriously underpaid, so I can't imagine they're thaaaaaat expensive. Maybe it depends on where you buy it.
@joelmw there are some deals every once in a while. i picked up a couple a while back for my sprint team. i think they were $7 each with the discounts. without discounts, and with a decent stamp size, it's about $25-30. more than i want to spend on a novelty.
It isn't in the site's archive, but Crunchgear posted an item about "That guy who started Woot and now he's doing it again." It linked to the Kickstarter and from there blah blah blah.
Met @humper who introduced me to Woot > Deals.Woot > Deals.Woot Chat > @Cowboydann > who told me to check twitter when @snapster posted about mediocre > Mediocre Forums > Kickstarter > meh forums > profit??
@Thumperchick Heh, I remember how excited I was too. Stopped a breakfast date and made it to go because I couldn't create an account over my phone and drove 20 miles to a computer. good times good times.
I learned about woot from a Friend who is related to Matt Rutledge (Allegedly). So, I figured I'd check out the site and they happened to have a Woot-off. They were selling this "Bag of Crap" so I purchased it, no idea what to expect. I then learned how rare/hard they were to purchase, and I was hooked. I'm up to near 50 BOCs (I have a serious problem). Hung out in the Music Mondays group, who introduced me to the Mediocre site, thus the kick starter, which, well, took me here.
@Moose i also came from the SA thread. i'm fickle with forums and i wasn't going to participate, but i was amused by @unixrab and his tirades in every thread. also i wanted a shirt that said meh. i want everything in my life to be meh brand, kind of like Acme in the warner brothers cartoons.
but i think it was @jont replying to a question i asked about a product that impressed me enough to really participate and join the community. i really liked how meh has engaged and encouraged a community, and also dealt with less than perfect situations.
I divorced woot years ago, but their b'day still pops up on my calendar to check for a boc. When I got the reminder, I looked up woot (I know) and found the article about @snapster and the breakfast octopus and his new site. Got here just a couple of days too late for the kickstarter.
Most of these stories are not long or boring. Maybe mine will be.
Once upon a time, I was talking to a software developer friend of mine. I asked what sites he frequents, and lamented how hateful and snarky the forums are on many tech sites that I read. He recommended reading daringfireball.net. So I started reading that. The author, John Gruber, mentions his advertisers, and mentioned meh.com (and how they did a strange ad thingie). So I got to meh.com. I was struck by how kind and gentle the forums are. So I'm here; (ok, so I have to work on being kind and gentle instead of generally sarcastic).
I saw that snapster was working on something new and I fell in love all over again <3. fell pretty hard too, pretty much faceplanted right into the pavement.
@galmaegi Send them all to me... my pretties... But seriously... I'm not being a smartass about this... Where are the white ones to match my phone??? :) I know you sold out of your white ones a while ago... Can someone find some more white ones to sell on meh? :) Please! :)
@DrunkCat Smartass. I approve. I thought about a post like this.
In my case, I have two tabs pinned for meh forums (one usually holds a conversation I'm particularly tracking; I started it with @Starblind's Irk's Breakfast Adventure). The bookmark on the bar is almost always how I get back to the topic list.
@tightwad That's literally less than a third of what I usually have open (and the screen shot in fact shows only half of the width of that window). And most often there are 3+ windows (each with its own madness of open tabs). I almost said that earlier. I'm a big believer in a vertical taskbar with lotsa stuff pinned on it (and pinned on individual apps that allow pinning, like Explorer).
What's funny is that I don't believe in multi-tasking. I do however believe in efficient task swapping.
@joelmw Same here, except I am not good at pinning the pages. I usually have at least 2 browsers, 3 instances of at least one of them, with from 5-25 tabs per instance. I don't like to waste time getting back to the page/application I wanted. When the computer blue screens I know it has had too much...
But I gotta say, I think you might have a problem. Or yeah, maybe you're just mightier than I. Sigh. Or you have better hardware (and IT bandwidth/infrastructure) than I do. Bigger sigh. I won't pretend that it's just "how you use it." Sigh. But, hey, look, I gots lotsa bookmarks and widgets too.
Honestly, I try to keep it down, for performance and not just comprehension. It's like with words: my goal is almost always to be concise (and I can tweet, goddamnit), but it usually just doesn't work out that way.
I got hooked on meh back in January 2015. It was a normal day, just checking email, various websites......and then there it was, advertised on dealnews.com.....Meh.com had tons of Built NY Neoprene……CHEAP! So, after a couple months I made it official in March and became a VMP. Now, I wear my shirts with pride, have my Fuku/Fuko ringtones (thanks again @Dashcloud) set my alarm at night to 11:55, and read through the forum frequently throughout the day (still do more lurking than posting).... …….so, yeah I am totally addicted. Am I crazy? Maybe….but around you guys, I feel totally normal.
I'm an habitual forum fiend, so last year when woot stalker added the meh-stalker, I wondered "What is this meh of which they speak? Clicking into the forums was the natural next step.
A co-worker told me woot sucks and that meh was better, so I checked it out. Poke around here and there, write a comment or two, buy a thing or two. Was never into the forums at woot but y'all are ok over here :)

@Barney That's the lamest of excuses. We got you talking once. I'm sure you're just full of long, rambling stories. And we'll coax them out of you one way or another.
They offered an AA shirt.
@narfcake Interesting, I would have said a (instead of an) AA shirt, since in my mind I say "double A"
@luvche21 I read "AA" as American Apparel, hence 'an'.
Not so much here but on more than one occasion at shirt.woot, I've confused others writing TT - did I mean ThunderThighs or TeeTurtle?
@narfcake I think someone should do a study on people's interpretations of words/names when they have only ever read them and never heard them, and maybe it's already been done.
I was just talking to a coworker whose brother always pronounced Adobe with a silent E on the end and long O (like Adobe is pronounced, but without the E at the end).
I read AA as Alcoholics Anonymous... But that made the "an" justified. ;)
The mediocre forums got boring, so I came here.
Something went terribly wrong.
Feline health forum "great vacuum cleaner deal" post => woot => deals.woot => mediocre => meh.
Basically you could say I am here because of cat hair.
exhibit A:

I saw the posts on deals.woot about this new site, and jumped on the Kickstarter then, but I don't think I joined the forums until the Meh forums launched.
Woot forums- I don't remember who
@sammydog01 Samers.
Cheapskate link to the AOC Monitors that instantly made me realize that meh was the new KOOL.
Life's been better ever since.
I genuinely do not recall. It went something like this....One day I was like "Well shit; my life is so blasé.... I will craft a marginally less meager existence on an internet forum."

@Bingo Me too.
Woot forums and a Snapster tweet about a new endeavor called Mediocre and then Kickstarter to Meh
I really don't have a fucking clue. Let's blame it on aliens.
@cinoclav
@jaremelz What, no anal probe?
Back in November I saw some recommendation for cheap headphones that I picked up for the teenager. It was a bit longer before I stopped lurking, so I haven't really been around long. I contemplate lurker status regularly, but who am I kidding, I love you weirdos.

Wait, what was the question?
@joelmw "you had me at fuck". i'm totally using that line.
@carl669 That probably means more to me than you can imagine. Definitely more than it should.
@joelmw and now, i need that image on a stamp.
edit: fuck me; stamps are expensive!
@carl669 When I led a testing department, some of the folks I worked with had a stamp made for me that says "Testing Department Seal of Approval," because I was notorious for withholding final approval (we met our production deadlines, I guess maybe with caveats from me). @carl669 looks like a beer cap. that would be some great marketing

Woot from a kid in HTML class in high school, Meh from this thread over at Something Awful.

@Moose Does your mom know you're hanging out on the internet ?
@vampje ...
@Moose Your high school had an HTML class?
@Moose Same, was a long time wooter, then saw the thread on SA about meh. I'm PISSED it took me so long to get here.
The judge told me it was here or Arkham. I chose here...now I am thinking Arkham was the right choice.
?
@mfladd You should have gone with Arkham, we're having a good time....
I divorced woot years ago, but their b'day still pops up on my calendar to check for a boc. When I got the reminder, I looked up woot (I know) and found the article about @snapster and the breakfast octopus and his new site. Got here just a couple of days too late for the kickstarter.
Via random button clicking to see what it did.

tl;dr - advertising.
@sligett Yup. We're kind, and gentle, and cuss like motherfuckers!
@Teripie @sligett well there does tend to be a bit of quirky snark.
I have an extremely short and an extremely long answer to this question, both of which can be fairly easily guessed.
@dave I think the extremely long version would be entertaining.
@dave you lost a bet?
I saw that snapster was working on something new and I fell in love all over again <3. fell pretty hard too, pretty much faceplanted right into the pavement.
Kickstarter to meh to forum.
I made a left turn at Albuquerque.
@parodymandotcom Better than going straight.
@parodymandotcom I so hoped this would be a thing. And it is. FTW.
@parodymandotcom And for those who might not know what I was referring to,
@parodymandotcom Never made it to Pismo Beach, eh?
@parodymandotcom what a maroon
@vampje and an imbessel.
Something about being hired
@MEHcus samesies.
@hollboll copycat
@MEHcus Aww...
@MEHcus How was the interview? Anything like applying at Google? :)
What more can I say... SPEAKER DOCKS!
@galmaegi Send them all to me... my pretties... But seriously... I'm not being a smartass about this... Where are the white ones to match my phone??? :) I know you sold out of your white ones a while ago... Can someone find some more white ones to sell on meh? :) Please! :)

@tightwad @joelmw Amateurs.
@jqubed @tightwad

@joelmw I have a lot that should be closed. I can only pull that off because I have Firefox set to only load tabs when I click them.
I got hooked on meh back in January 2015. @thumperchick We haven't heard how you and @humper made it to the forums here.
@dashcloud Thumperchick answered how she got here about 1/2 way up the page.
@Humper Indeed she did- clearly @sohmageek's fault here.
@dashcloud I don't think I saw how @humper dos. But I need to read the whole thing anyway. I'm sorry. Perhaps a coffee will help?
I was looking for a place to buy a Glen sock puppet
A co-worker told me woot sucks and that meh was better, so I checked it out. Poke around here and there, write a comment or two, buy a thing or two. Was never into the forums at woot but y'all are ok over here :)

@Snapster --> Kickstarter --> Mediocre (or was it Mediocre --> Kickstarter? I assume KS came first....) --> Meh day 0 --> Forums because duh.
@Perkalicious mediocre was before ks
@Thumperchick oh yeah, that makes sense. KS funded Meh. What an adventure it's been.
On one of my infrequent returns to the Woot forums @pooflady told me about Mediocre, so I joined the site then to reserve my username. I didn't get into the actual forums until Meh launched, though. The funny thing is I'm now here far more often than at Woot, primarily because this forum works so well on my phone (really, this is the best forum I've ever seen on a phone, so kudos to @shawn, @katylava, et al) and that's where I do most of my leisure internetting now.
I like Knives and Speaker Docks ( www.knivesandspeakerdocks.com )
@unoriginal26 If only it was Speaker docks and Knives...
@sohmageek or Speaker Docks with Knives
@unoriginal26 Well that's pretty un--oh, you said that already.
@tHumperChick Like so... http://lmgtfy.com/?q=How+did+you+get+to+meh%27s+forums%3F
@sohmageek well played.
Hey @Barney - this thread was your idea! Where you at?
(Besides being totally busy taking care of your mom and being a normal person with real life...)
@Thumperchick Honestly, it is a long and boring story and I'd hate to take @joelmw's verbosity title away from him.
@Barney o_o
@Barney You can try, but I have doubts as to whether you can actually take that title away- prove me wrong!
@Barney That's the lamest of excuses. We got you talking once. I'm sure you're just full of long, rambling stories. And we'll coax them out of you one way or another.
@joelmw Hmmm...
@Barney I hadn't seen your other post when I commented here.
Deals.woot
breakfast octopus
No kickstarter cause i ignore email.
i clicked the link on meh's home page.
