I’m fortunate that where I work there are also prepared meals as part of the job. (Essentially a retirement apartment building with dining room.) I had roast beef and mashed potatoes for lunch yesterday.
@ruouttaurmind In high school I used to go to a local gas station chain that had 3 roller dogs with a toppings bar and a giant soft drink for $1.50. It was cheaper than school lunch.
@somf69 That’s an extra $0.69 around here. Although you can load up all the standard toppings you want… onions, kraut, salsa, jalapenos, pickle relish and so on. By the time I’m done burying my dogs in all that crap there’s hardly an detectable sign of the nasty pig noses and chicken lips left.
@jmoor783, my school partially subsidised the cafeteria, so hot lunches were under a buck, and the snack bar was reasonable. Bag of chips, peanut butter Nutty Bar and a can of grape Hi-C for about fifty cents.
I’m all over the map, lunchwise. Everything from the cheapest up to two or three times what I should reasonably spend, eating out midday is one of the places where I let my spendthrift ways run wild ‘n’ free.
I drive around all day, so it depends on whether or not I’ve got time for lunch, how much time I’ve got, and where I am. And if I’ve only got time for drive through, how messy it is.
I’m in the middle of Manhattan’s financial district. Lunch here is either a fast food place, some kind of restaurant/bar, or a “by the pound” (~$9.99/per) buffet that’s always staffed by Mexican illegals.
Since I’m a dysfunctional millennial who can barely find enough time to sleep, I’ve never packed anything, unless it’s a protein bar. My regular lunch is a 3-mile walk, followed by eating a plastic takeout container of raw broccoli and lean chicken breast bought from one of the buffets with the Mexicans.
@ShotgunX I used to work down on Wall Street and found a deli that offered a bargain basement $3 combo consisting of an egg salad sandwich and a can of soda. Talk about lunch of champions.
At my old work, I usually ate off a lunch truck. Un burrito con pollo, arroz, cilantro, y cebollas, por favor. Sometimes, es un plato de enchiladas con frijoles y arroz.
@narfcake My last job I’d go to the trucks too. The pie truck, the lasagna truck, the cheese steak truck, the cheesecake truck, the donut truck, the cookie truck…
@dptalia There was a Vietnamese van always by the seaside down in Bournemouth that made this little banh mi thit for only 2 quid. Add a che for 50p and it was a fantastic little snacker. Mmmm.
@dptalia there was a commercial trying to say you could buy from them just what you needed (cable or phone company?) and it started “if you want a piece of pie, you dont want to pay for the whole pie, do you?” I would think to myself or even say aloud “yes, I do, because it is PIE”
“Come in for a FREE* slice of classic fruit pie, Granny Smith Caramel Apple Crumble, Pumpkin, Classic Pumpkin with Whipped Cream, or French Silk, with any dine-in purchase.” My local VI said they’d honor it on takeout, too.
i never ate lunch because i had a job where my phone was always ringing from different time zones for consulting purposes and it was easier to just not watch a lunch deteriorate in front of me while i was always working. now i still don’t eat lunch but enjoy my life more cause i don’t do that crappy job any more and am much happier.
Ski season is coming quickly so it’s time to get back into shape. Lean Cuisine and Smart Ones are my friends. The fact that our cafeteria is pretty lousy is incentive to save money and bring my own healthier food.
I loved working in Las Vegas; our office was on Convention Center Drive between the Strip and the Convention Center. I was 1-5 blocks walking distance from multiple hotel casinos; The Stardust, the Landmark (now gone), Riverboat, the Peppermill Restaurant (pricy), the Riviera, and others. So some would have a good $1.99 breakfast available until noon, some had great buffets that weren’t too busy mid-day, a couple small places that catered to locals had really good burgers and other fast lunches… a Sicilian pizza joint that had the best garlic pizza till it got shut down for being a “Sicilian” pizza joint, and a drug store that had a small lunch counter and the most amazing chicken fingers… sigh.
Now its one fantastic sandwich shop, one decent Thai and one decent Chinese take out, or fast food. Nothing in walking distance. No time for the drives to other better places. I save the fantastic sandwiches for couple of times a month specials (because they’re also $$$).
I have a Jen to pack it.
@Pantheist
Do you sometimes get some of those legendary cookies?
I’m fortunate that where I work there are also prepared meals as part of the job. (Essentially a retirement apartment building with dining room.) I had roast beef and mashed potatoes for lunch yesterday.
I got to a cozy place called The Kitchen (which is literally my kitchen) where I pack my lunch (into my face).
Gas station roller dog. Lunch of champions.
@wmbarr Gack. It’s hard to argue with two dogs and a drink for $3.50, but still… gack.
@wmbarr don’t forget the free all you can pump chilli…

I work at Google. They make sure I don’t starve to death.
@khearn
What do they feed you, within the Tech Magical Kingdom?
Tantalize us, please.
What is this “out” you speak of?

Get Free lunch at work, or Taco & Burrito Palace.
I usually skip lunch, but the boss is taking me out to lunch tomorrow.
@ConAndLibrarian
Pro Tip: Make sure you order an extra one “to go” because that way the boss knows you really appreciate it!
@therealjrn Thanks for the tip!

@hollycrisson That’s what I’m having for lunch today, except I made the egg salad. Ingredients for 8 sandwiches ran $6.
BRAINZ
Where ever there is a meat and 2 or 3 you will find me.
The Landmark in Charlotte is the ultimate though
@cranky1950 so good, but so far away
I don’t often eat lunch. Usually too busy. And if I’m not too busy I use the opportunity to check in here.
But occasionally I’ll grab a pollo quesadilla at the little hipster Mexican fusion joint down the street.
Leftovers usually.

I miss my trucks. Especially the pie truck.
@dptalia I miss the chipper vans and curry trucks in the UK. Mmmmm.
@ruouttaurmind Oh, that sounds fabulous! The steak and frites truck was always amazing here.

@mollama Eating at Village Inn a lot this month?
“Come in for a FREE* slice of classic fruit pie, Granny Smith Caramel Apple Crumble, Pumpkin, Classic Pumpkin with Whipped Cream, or French Silk, with any dine-in purchase.” My local VI said they’d honor it on takeout, too.
I pack my lunch because I’m a cheap bastard.
@ZeroCharisma
Are those habits and practices the cause of, or the result of, the impressions that give that measurement result on the Charisma Scale?
Whataburger
I usually pack, but when I don’t, it’s the grocery store for chicken strips and bag salad or Subway.

There’s a cafeteria at work. The food ain’t amazing, but it’s usually cheaper than any place outside.
I usually work through lunch so I pack some cheese sticks and a homemade yogurt and Granola.
Where’s the “Finish Last Night’s Leftovers” option?
Our company’s cafeteria is actually pretty good… And very reasonably priced.
I pack the raw materials for lunch (bread, Bologna, cheese etc.) and leave them at work so I can have a non-packed pack lunch.
I prefer homemade food. I used to take food contaners to work
Never really thought of packing a lunch as demonstrating my superiority. Always thought of it more as demonstrating my lack of money.
