If you don’t limit the amount by some other factor than account (limit per address for example), there’s no point to having a limit. Never wanted more than three of a thing, so maybe those limits are already in place?
@JanaS I disagree on the principle that items should be first come, first served. Midnight should have equal or higher per person limit than 8am crowd.
Supply should be a factor. So these fan battery chargers it seems like you have thousands of them. Sell unlimited. Something you’d likely sell out of instead limit it. Ideal is sell out at 1159m
If you have many thousands of something (Bluetooth speakers maybe?) the purchase limit should be quite large or unlimited*.
If you have a limited quantity of something and anticipate high demand, purchase limit should be 1 or 2.
*It would be reasonable to assess an additional shipping fee for quantities that exceed X amount. Like VMP or $5 shipping for first few items and $X for each additional item.
@JanaS I do! The string lights create a bit of a challenge to the “purchase limits” model. They were a mixture of multiple lengths, each available in 2 colors (warm or cool). In order to use them for their intended purpose, for example to line the corners of an outdoor patio, or under kitchen cabinets, the buyer requires specific quantities of various lengths in matching colors.
Solving that dilemma given the constraints of Meh’s typical selling mode… certainly requires a bit of creativity. But that is a rare bird in comparison to speaker docks and pocket knives.
@ruouttaurmind I miss speaker docks. It’s like someone jabbing a cold meh knife in when people talk of them… maybe next year they will leave that special place in my heart and move on to the legend that they are for everyone else.
@sohmageek Honestly, I had no feelings about them either way. Sort of a “meh” reaction you could say. But then they just kept returning and returning again and again and again… just too much. Like when my nephew comes to spend the day and he watches Sponge Bob. I have no ill will towards Sponge Bob, but after a dozen episodes or so I find myself wishing Plankton would just succeed in blasting Bikini Bottom to smithereens already.
I picked 4 because occasionally I’ve wanted more than 3 of something, but see the reason for a low limit to keep resellers at bay. But maybe there should be other considerations, like what the item is and how good a deal it is/how likely it is to be reseller bait. High end electronics for 80% off? 3, or even fewer. Low dollar interesting thing without a lot of margin to be made (Stick up Bluetooth speakers, for example), make it a dozen. Bamboo doorstop pillows, one truckload worth.
Actually, I like my pillow just fine, but I know people love to hate on them around here.
Once, early on, I made a comment on the product thread that I wanted to buy more (speakers) to give as christmas presents to middle/high schoolers and the next thing I knew is that someone had increased the limit to the number I needed to buy. That was really nice.
I’d agree with it needs to depend on supply, reseller bait potential… maybe a VMP benefit could be you can buy double whatever the limit is (well except fuko/fuku’s)?
WTF is a fuko/fuku ?? Neither google nor wikipedia was a help; what they had didn’t seem relevant to the use on this site. And I see it (them?) used a lot around here.
If it is obvious, I apologize for a dumb question. Otherwise, not.
(By the time I learn something leet-speak, it is usually too-late-speak. My teenager probably couldn’t tell you who is the current vice-president, or even the last one, but he think’s I know nothing current and that I am an old fogey, though he doesn’t know the term.)
Three is a decent daily limit. Cuts some of the resellers out, spreads it around.
Unless something or other would naturally be useful/shippable in other quantities.
Or unless something hot - such as a laptop - needs to be have stiffer “shill purchaser or reseller” boundaries.
Or unless Meh has access to so many items that that limits of three are counterproductive or don’t matter. In which case, raise the limits. But now more than 1 billion per purchaser! For reasons of sanity.
What is the formal policy in multiple shipment to a given address? When something is “hot” (cool stuff)?
When something “less hot” and used in quantity in a home (batteries, light bulbs)?
Meh might want to do a fourth circuitbrraker for some items, to extra-irritate the anti-circuit-breaker people.
At 10pm eastern, only for items with lots left, or only on days when Meh wants to torment folks more than usually, allow additional purchases. But don’t ever tell inadvance whether more items can be purchased at 10pm or not. Just tease the possibility.
Variable limits depending on factors such as supply, price, and shipping cost. High enough to encourage a sellout, but low enough to discourage resellers and make sure most people get a chance to buy.
Go unlimited at 11:50 EST. That way the folks can get there early enough to buy and still be there for the next days offering, and also make the previous day’s last chance vmp offering unlimited.
@miko1 Unlimited at 23:50 for VMP only? Hmm… interesting.
Of course, as the VMP program is winding down, the value of maintaining that $5 monthly charge would potentially gain a slight additional value for those of us that seldom actually make purchases.
It should be item dependent, but if you have more options than the limit it should at least match. There were some socks not too long ago and I couldn’t buy just one of each variety because there were more varieties than the limit. But reseller baiting items should be 1 maybe 2.
I checked “3” in the poll, but feel like it should be completely dependent upon rate of sale. The goal is to sell out every day, right? Can you start off with 3, then increase it as the day goes on?

Midnight = 3
8AM = 5 (If never paused) If you bought 3 at Midnight you can get two more now.
MVP = back to 3 (AFTER pause only)
Does NOT apply to Fuko or Fuku. 1 only thank you.

@ruouttaurmind personally I think GMP crowd should get a few extra.
@sohmageek Mmmmmmmm… GMP? Was ist das?
@ruouttaurmind Am guessing it was a mis-type of “VMP”.
@SirLouie Wow! Pulled this thread out of the Wayback Machine!

Household size. Sometime you just need to equip everyone.
Supply should be a factor. So these fan battery chargers it seems like you have thousands of them. Sell unlimited. Something you’d likely sell out of instead limit it. Ideal is sell out at 1159m
Limit should be proportionate to supply:
If you have many thousands of something (Bluetooth speakers maybe?) the purchase limit should be quite large or unlimited*.
If you have a limited quantity of something and anticipate high demand, purchase limit should be 1 or 2.
*It would be reasonable to assess an additional shipping fee for quantities that exceed X amount. Like VMP or $5 shipping for first few items and $X for each additional item.

Being tormented is fun. Don’t spoil that for us.

Make it entirely irritating and set it at Zero. Meh the soup nazi.
“always buy three”
