A Nest thermostat would actually be a considerable improvement, especially around this time of year when it’s likely the A/C runs during the day and the heat at night. (Basic thermostats cannot switch HVAC modes on their own!)
@PooltoyWolf
I’m loving my pseudo-nest thermostat that came with my new heat pump. I’ve been able to control the temperature at the house while on vacation in Martinique and Guadaloupe in order to make sure I can protect the pipes on those days when it’s gotten particularly cold. Also have a couple of smart plugins that I’m using for heat lamps in some cold frames for temperature sensitive plants. We’ll see how well they fare when I get back.
@PooltoyWolf I have never in my life run the AC and heat on the same day, and I can’t imagine doing so.
I keep at least a 15-degree (F) delta between my AC temperature and my heater temperature. I know that’s more than most people, but dang.
@Limewater While it isn’t that bad here (usually), there are places where the temperature swing between day and night can be greater than 50 degrees for a good part of the year. Recently, here in central Florida, there have been a few days where it was in the 80s during the day and close to the 40s after dark!
@PooltoyWolf Sure. It’s not like the desert where I am, but we have decently-large swings here, too. Thirty-degree swings are pretty typical in spring and fall.
But if it’s hot enough to run my A/C during the day, a 35-degree dip at night isn’t going to cool the interior of my house enough to dip fifteen degrees unless I’m putting my windows down and running fans.
@PooltoyWolf It’s probably about standard for southeastern U.S. construction 25 years ago. The windows are in bad shape, and pretty drafty, but the walls are pretty good, and there’s blown-in insulation in the attic.
It’s just a normal house on a slab foundation.
If the interior of my house is 80 degrees at sunset, it’s just not going to get down to 65 over the course of a single night unless there’s a really huge temperature delta.
The house I grew up in was from the 1920s and not well-insulated, but we also never had to run the A/C and heat in the same day.
@iluvmingos I used to agree with you until my wife insisted that we get one and now I love it. We use it for all the timers, it can be fun for the kids to play with the drawing apps, it makes it super easy to check calendars and weather.
While I know all of these things are available on a smart phone, it’s been most applied in the context of our kids. Now they have something to check instead of checking our phones, we can facilitate independence by having them check themselves.
We’re a family that likes to use technology but we push our kids away from it as much as possible and make them go outside. It does a phenomenal job of being a piece of technology that is useful, but because it’s a fridge and you can’t curl up with it on the couch you can easily leave it alone. Again, I know there’s other ways to do it, but if you saw how much we used it, you’d honestly be surprised.
@olperfesser I would get rid of the smart TV in a second. The OS on the TV is going to crap out well before the screen does and leave me with a $4k unusable TV.
I have a smart TV, mostly because of the image quality you can’t get in a larger screen without it anymore
I do, however, really have only 1 infrastructure other than the lappy. And well, when the watch dies, I dunno, they don’t exist anymore than function like I like
Dumb tech.
@yakkoTDI I feel like everything from Get Smart would qualify, followed by Johnny English. Hang on, I’m getting a call on my smart shoe phone.
KuoH
Again, let’s make the robot uprising harder. I want the dumbest of dumb tech.

@Limewater @PooltoyWolf
Sounds like typical weather for Colorado in the spring and fall!

@Limewater Is your dwelling densely insulated?

Smart car
mouth
@tweezak Well played!
I have smart lights and a smart thermostat, but I really don’t understand the need for a smart fridge.
@iluvmingos This is the way.

None of them
Smart backhoe.
Smart people
Smart jetpack ala “Jetsons”.
Smart kids.
Robo Scarlet would be nice, even though she might kill me, so maybe just the invisibility cloak.
KuoH
It’s thanks to Meh that I got on the Philips Hue system.
Ass
Smart gun. Always aims for the head.
Just the ‘smart’ TV.
@olperfesser I would get rid of the smart TV in a second. The OS on the TV is going to crap out well before the screen does and leave me with a $4k unusable TV.
I want a smart bidet. I’d call it the Starship Enterprise.
I want a smart robot that can do all the things my executive function can’t manage.
An all-in-one copier/printer/vacuum/dishwasher/air-purifier with bonus margarita/slushee maker attachment
The smartest thing I own is my phone. I don’t even own an Alexia. Were true diy’s in my home lol
@Star2236 Yeah, I’m not a fan of Dyslexia either. Gloogle’s not much better.
KuoH
@kuoh @Star2236 don’t forget Siri and Bixby although they are both a bit dumber
