@jestermx6 3DS or Vita here too. Really, when I was still actively flying on planes, the answer was PSP, because that was the system I used primarily back then. The nice thing on the PSP 2k/3k was that you could run 8 hours on one extended battery, and I took a spare with me on the plane for 16 hours of entertainment...
@jestermx6 I love my 3DS so much. I had jury duty about a month ago, and it practically saved my life (i.e. prevented overbearing boredom from coring through my mushy brain).
@jestermx6 Don't have a 3DS yet, but I still carry my trusty DSi on any flights I go on. I plan to pick up one of the "New 3DS's" that are coming out next month.
Speaking of this, if you fly Delta, there's a 'cheat' to get free wifi on IOS. Go into the streaming apps, say you don't have the app and it'll open up the apple store for you to download the app. For 15-20 minutes, it also opens up access to everything. You have to repeat this, but I've used it multiple times on 3-4 hour flights without any issues.
@InnocuousFarmer Last time I traveled it was with a coworker. He's old enough to be my grandpa... Yet he looked at me and said, "You're reading a book?!"
I've flown once in the past year (Sacramento <-> Burbank). I listened to some pieces I was learning on the phone while looking at the music on the iPad. I forgot to put the music on the iPad before the flight or I would have listened to the music on that. I might fly once this year.
I've only flown once, and it was so long ago when I was a wee thing that I don't remember it. So have to say this poll is Not Applicable, but I voted anyway because I like clicking things and contributing nothing to the conversation.
@iluvmingos Or turning them off for takeoff and landing. The last couple of times we flew they just made us turn off the wifi, so I guess that's changed.
I think the last time I flew was 1985 or 6, so it must have been a walkman knockoff. Sitting in the smoking section, sneaking drinks and listening to The Damned and Crass all the way to Anchorage from L.A., fun times.
I voted phone but I only use it to play music. I've been beating myself up lately for not reading enough so the last time I flew I read a book the entire flight while listening to said phone music.
Side note: if you have any interest in kick ass fantasy novels with an awesome magic system, really great action/battle sequences, a well developed world, strong female characters, and some great plot twists I highly recommend the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson
@JonT I just read the Mistborn books a few months ago. They were amazing, especially the first book. I also just read the first book from his 'The Way of Kings' series, and while it took a while to get started, it's also great.
@MsELizardBeth I am blessed with a pretty stable tummy, I wasn't even seasick on the cruise where we were beng chased around by a hurricane and half the crew and 90% of the passengers were incapacitated. But some folks in my travel group are not so lucky. Eat candied ginger before and while flying (you can get it at any Asian market). You can get ginger in a pill form but the candied stuff is tasty and I hear it is more effective. I always take a bag when I travel just in case anyone in the group has a problem. Also those bands you put on your wrist are supposed to work great. I talked a pregnant coworker who was suffering mightily from morning sickness to try one and she said it was like a miracle. YMMV. Also sitting by a window helps. http://www.motion-sickness-guru.com/ginger-for-motion-sickness.html
@MsELizardBeth We have only about 2% Asian population, but we have numerous Chinese restaurants and at least a couple of every other major kind of Asian cuisine. As many as a dozen Asian markets as well. Asian food is my favorite (Thai FTW) so I shop at Asian groceries fairly often. Rice vinegar, candied ginger, wasabi and gari (sushi ginger) are staples in my kitchen.
@moondrake i get seroius motion sickness. ginger will settle my stomach a bit but it wont keep me from spewing. mecalizine is the only thing that actually works for me. or tequila in quantities large enought to render me unconscious, but that tends to have unpleasent effects later...
@wanderson24 even with my portable powerbanks, i worry about my phone not being useable when i get to my destination so i stick to my tablet onthe plane. but the 6 does seem like a good size. if i wasn't shackled by whatever work chooses to buy for me, i would probably get that one.
@vampje the 6+ has crazy battery life, especially with less than heavy use. The other day mine was at less than 5% to start the day and I couldn't grab a charger so I figured it would just die soon and left it alone. Finally at like 10pm I picked it up and it was still around 2% and that was with wifi and Bluetooth on the entire time. I really like this phone.
The only electronic device I use is my sexy, sexy Zune. I've never been able to concentrate on planes--something about the air and lighting and sound (even plain bass hurts my head, much less plane bass [lololol a pun!!])--so it's mostly just slitted-eye half-insensate head-lolling lucid dreamery with a 9 hour soundtrack punctuated by periods of petulanly poking at the plane personal screen thing before giving up with loud, heavy sighs and falling back into louche daydreams of who and how I'd kill and reorder and rule when I inevitably inherit the powers of a galactic god.
I usually fly Thai Air. So...my "Mobile Device" is the in flight entertainment system....that is wizzing along at 400mph at 30,000 feet. Now THAT, ladies and gentlemen is a mobile device!
@TheDagda best flight experience I've ever had was flying Asiana to China. Free booze, awesome food, super cool in-seat touchscreens with tons of free movies and TV. Flying international is the way to go.
@JonT My best flight experiences have been British Airways. You are brought a meal or a snack every couple of hours, and if you walk back by the bathroom/food prep area there are stacks of drinks and baskets of chips and cookies free for the taking. Excellent movies, some still in the theaters. The flight attendants also make you feel welcome and not like a PITA.
@TheDagda i quite liked virgin atlantic, a little care pack at my seat and tons of food services and really nice attendants. in the us i prefer virgin america, sadly no free food, but better seats than the other airlines
@vampje@moondrake@JonT yeah...sadly, American flag airlines need to take some notes on carriers in the rest of the world. Even regional flights in Asia and Europe are far and above any US carrier. But, I digress.... and I have not had the pleasure of flying Virgin Air...will have to try it.
On big planes, I use the in-flight. On smaller planes, I alternate between books and my tablet for movies and games. Living in the hinterlands, we spend a lot of time on road trips, and I use the tablet to play games while riding shotgun and chit-chatting with the driver. I don't read or watch movies while riding shotgun as that's rude to the person driving, but if I can score the back seat and leave the support job to someone else then it's movies all the way.
Travel with a small baby and the only "devices" you'll have to worry about are the disposable diapers. The only re-charging needed will be drinking enough liquid to keep Mom's milk supply flowing. When my kids were little I did St.Louis to Stuttgart to visit Daddy (w/1 baby and back), later Berlin to St.Louis (w/1 baby + 2-yr-old) to visit Grandma. Trips with other adults to help were a breeze.
The tablet ... which functions as an e-reader on an airplane. I used to carry books, but it's nice to be able to choose from a few (or even buy more if you can find a WiFi hotspot) without adding any extra bulk.
Flying tip: The expensive noise cancelling headphones are a ripoff for flying, for several reasons:
Any "noise cancelling" also reduces the quality of the audio you are listening too
It's more uncomfortable to sleep on a plane with big headphones on
A quality pair of in-ear noise isolating headphones (I prefer using the foam tips) block more noise and let you sleep more comfortably, with an added bonus of douche-iness reduction
Flying tip #2: Most airlines have pillows in first class, but none in coach. On your way back to the poor people section, check out the first class overhead bins for extra pillows and swipe one on your way to the back. Do not take them off the seats. Those are off limits. If they are in the overhead, they are up for grabs.
I had an old school Nintendo Gameboy (black and white) with Tetris that saved my sanity once when I got stuck for an extra 2 hours on the tarmac before an already 8-hour flight from Amsterdam.
3DS/PS Vita. I'm a child at heart.
@jestermx6 3DS or Vita here too. Really, when I was still actively flying on planes, the answer was PSP, because that was the system I used primarily back then. @jestermx6 3DS here, too.
@jestermx6 3ds all the way
@jestermx6 3ds for life
@jestermx6 I love my 3DS so much. I had jury duty about a month ago, and it practically saved my life (i.e. prevented overbearing boredom from coring through my mushy brain).
@hart Nice to see Justice still lives.
@jestermx6 Don't have a 3DS yet, but I still carry my trusty DSi on any flights I go on. I plan to pick up one of the "New 3DS's" that are coming out next month.

I take a paperback book, kickin' it oldschool.
@InnocuousFarmer Me, too. Long international flights may require more than one.
@InnocuousFarmer Last time I traveled it was with a coworker. He's old enough to be my grandpa... Yet he looked at me and said, "You're reading a book?!"

@Tiamat114 Blessings on you, musician. I live for the beauty you contribute to the world.
Books. They're the latest thing.
@bluejester And you don't have to worry about your battery dying.
@iluvmingos Or turning them off for takeoff and landing. The last couple of times we flew they just made us turn off the wifi, so I guess that's changed.

@cercopithecoid Whoa, the smoking section. I forgot that even existed!
@jqubed Ah, yes, I remember the curse of being surrounded by smokers while trying to comfort my coughing child.
I flew that route then, too! Red/purple Walkman in those days. Now it's tablet, and on the east coast.
I voted phone but I only use it to play music. I've been beating myself up lately for not reading enough so the last time I flew I read a book the entire flight while listening to said phone music.

The airsick bag and I become instant best friends. I hold on to it for dear life and inevitably end up using at least one.
@MsELizardBeth I am blessed with a pretty stable tummy, I wasn't even seasick on the cruise where we were beng chased around by a hurricane and half the crew and 90% of the passengers were incapacitated. @moondrake .... Asian market?? I live in the rural midwest.
@moondrake And I flew when I had morning sickness. Filled 3 bags. Not a good choice.
@MsELizardBeth I live in the desert southwest, and we have several. OTOH, we also have a large military base, so maybe that's it. They sell it at regular supermarkets but charge through the nose for it. There's always Amazon, the great equalizer: http://www.amazon.com/Ginger-People-Crystallized-Candy-Each/dp/B000EMAMYS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1421338959&sr=8-3&keywords=candied+ginger
@moondrake We have 2 Chinese buffets in the biggest town in the county (pop 8500) and that's about it. :)
@MsELizardBeth We have only about 2% Asian population, but we have numerous Chinese restaurants and at least a couple of every other major kind of Asian cuisine. ipad air. read, watch, play, listen, work
tablet for picross and book reading.
Used to be the iPad, but now that the iPhone 6 Plus hit the phablet sweet spot, it's my goto media consumption buffet when I'm on a plane
@wanderson24 even with my portable powerbanks, i worry about my phone not being useable when i get to my destination so i stick to my tablet onthe plane. but the 6 does seem like a good size. if i wasn't shackled by whatever work chooses to buy for me, i would probably get that one.

wow, that is impressive.
@JonT I almost pulled the trigger, but im kinda unhappy with the current state of ios. I may need to go android or wp.
The only electronic device I use is my sexy, sexy Zune. @goldenthorn Galacticus, Snacker of Planets!
MP3 player, loaded with podcasts, kindle or nook, and a paperback backup.
I turn on the overhead light or open the window shade if the sun is up and have epic shadow puppet battles!
I usually fly Thai Air. So...my "Mobile Device" is the in flight entertainment system....that is wizzing along at 400mph at 30,000 feet. Now THAT, ladies and gentlemen is a mobile device!

Plenty of time to sleep when your dead -- or on a plane.

I'm disappointed that "Silver Bullet" wasn't one of the options.
