What is your fandom?
6What is your thing? Are you really into one TV show and know the lore? Maybe you’re a sports fanatic for your local team? Any video games/board games/D&D? Are you part of a fan club for a series of books or a character?
I’m just curious what group of fans you identify with and what you do to show your fandom?
If you can post a picture of your collection if you have one.

Doctor Who
Star Wars (literally my first memory is being in a theater watching ROTJ)
Star Trek (including NuTrek)
Stargate
All the stars basically…
Farscape
Buffy
Firefly
The Good Place
Top Gear
Qi
Far more I can’t think of right now.
Basically…I’m a Nerd…
How the heck did I forget Transformers?!?
I literally use the autobot logo for my profile pic across the internet…
@earlyre Gen1 or the new stuff? (Transformers)
@RiotDemon NOT Bayformers
…Though bumblebee was excellent…
Grew up on gen 1, loved Beast Wars.
The next concert I go to ( when we can do that again) will be the cybertronic spree.
Heck, my car is done up in a cluffjumper tribute motif.
@earlyre
to be a nerd, you have to include maths or science
@earlyre I had no idea this was a thing.
I didn’t mind the first Bay Transformers… But then I kinda lost interest somewhere after that. I want to go back and watch them all so I can pass judgement on the rest. I did enjoy Bumblebee.
I grew up with the toys more than the actual show. We didn’t have much children’s tv in Norway… But I do remember the toys fondly.
@earlyre Awesome, a fellow Farscape fan! It’s the most under appreciated sci-fi show imho.
Anyone who’s a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy should check it out. Actually, anyone who’s a fan of good tv in general should give it a watch.
FOOLS! TOOLS! JEWELS! AWESOME!
@die13lda
@earlyre I forgot they did that on Stargate. I was a big fan of that show and the original movie as it combined my loves of sci-fi and the Egyptian pantheon.
@die13lda @earlyre

@Cerridwyn @earlyre
Totally disagree. I know quite a few literary, political, and history nerds. Attend any trivia night or listen to the bios of Jeopardy! contestsants and you will better appreciate the diversity in nerdom.
@earlyre @RiotDemon I had no idea this was a thing either. Pretty fun!
@earlyre @njfan
Ok.
So what is the difference between a geek and a nerd? We may treat them the same sometimes, but are they? And has that changed over yime?
@Cerridwyn @earlyre @njfan Nerd has become a meaningless term. It’s not worth arguing over.
At this point it just means you are a person with an interest in something.
@Cerridwyn @earlyre @Limewater @njfan By 2010 and especially over the past decade, geek/nerd culture as a concept or identity has been dissolved due to broad cultural shifts that made things previously viewed as geeky/nerdy part of general pop culture. Apathy has fallen out of fashion as well, and having passion/an investment in things has resurged, so nothing quite came to replace these things previously seen as geeky/nerdy. The identity/culture of “gamers” has also been largely dissolved due to video games becoming more ubiquitous.
@earlyre Nice collection. Firefly fan myself.
@earlyre @Limewater @njfan @ThomasF
If you are talking video games I think you are right. If you are talking board, strategy or even some other specialty games, I disagree. And anyway, it’s really about how each of us self identify. Do I think what people call themselves has changed over the years? Absolutely?
Are you heterosexual? straight? cis?
Or are you something else? That’s not the question here, it’s just an example of changed nomenclature, but you know, none of those actually mean the same exact thing
So I googled what is the difference between a geek and a nerd. It came out about how I expected, and how I have always seen the difference –
Geeks are collection oriented, gathering facts and mementos related to their subject of interest. They are obsessed with the newest, coolest, trendiest things that their subject has to offer. Nerd – A studious intellectual, although again of a particular topic or field.
@Cerridwyn @earlyre @Limewater @njfan Fair, was mostly thinking in terms of geek culture and how subjects of interest previously thought of/regarded as geeky to have a vested interest in become part of our popular culture on the whole. Fantasy and Sci-Fi media, video games, card games, heck, even tabletop like D&D has been gaining attention outside the expected circles.
@earlyre @Limewater @njfan @ThomasF
yes
gamer geeks have come out of the closet
sorta like gays/lesbians/bis/queers/etc
I am old enough to have been an anomaly when I walked into a gamer store (or a comic book store). Not only was I a woman, but my partner was a woman and my daughter was a girl. We were like a pack of estrogen impinging on a testosterone laden world.
The boys and young men enjoyed their geekdom out of the eyes of the world, in back rooms, basements, garages.
They were ridiculed as immature and followers of satan.
When they came into the light, with the advent of the age of technology and the growing world knowledge that these geeks and nerds understood it, their hobbies, pastimes, their way of life came out of the closet right with them.
@earlyre I absolutely love Star Trek Discovery (it’s the best of them all, IMO) and the Short Treks, and I’m pretty fond of Picard and Lower Decks, then NuTrek, then TOS (I recently made it all the way through NG and am intermittently slogging through DS9, which, to be clear is better than I remembered; I haven’t even sampled the other series; nor have I seen all of the movies). More than that: Spock and the Federation future.
@joelmw I call the cbs all access shows NuTrek… Those movies ( with Thor as Kirk’s dad, and SylarSpock )…are the Kelvin timeline.
@die13lda @earlyre Whoa, I do not remember that Farscape spoof. Must be time for an SG-1 rewatch.
@blaineg @die13lda @earlyre that clip is pretty much all of the farscape but that episode has a bunch of parodies/jokes. Should be “200” I believe. Stargate always had an awesome sense of humor.

LEGOS! EGGOS! STRATEGO! AWESOME!
@djslack @RiotDemon that video was the final payoff from their Kickstarter 18-ish? Months ago. They kickstarted an album, cover versions of most of the Transformers: The Movie sound track, called “Transformers 1986”, released summer of 2019.
Then early this summer an additional collection of the remaining tracks calling it “Darkest Hour”.
Finally that “Dare to be Stupid” video, shot at all their shows in 2019. Even that final bit, with the man himself, was back stage of his show in Toronto last fall.
This is their first original single they released
Only the best fandom of them all.

A good question @targaryen but no singular passion for me. I am really into animated sitcoms like Bob’s Burgers and Archer, and sports franchises like the Jets and Yankees. I’d say reading too but I am a bit all over the place w/ regards to interests.
@njfan Yeah I enjoy watching Archer. Also I’m a Boston sports fan as well.
@Targaryen I’ll pretend you ended your response after Archer.
@njfan @Targaryen LMFAO. I so wanted to star you but sports ball… Then boston sports ball. So much conflict…
@njfan Are we seriously done with “phrasing”?
@PocketBrain I heard Archer has been renewed for another season!
@njfan @PocketBrain we will never be done with phrasing…
@njfan I don’t know if I’m in the “fandom” for Bob’s Burgers the way I’ve been in other fandoms but I have been watching the series over and over non-stop for the past month and squeaked with joy when I bought a blind box for plush danglers today and got Kuchi Kopi…
@violue if there wasn’t a pandemic and didn’t have an aversion to physical touch, I’d hug you.
The Venture Bros
Bob’s Burgers
Nero Wolfe books
Typewriters
@syrethia Oooh, love Nero Wolfe and typewriters! Also Bob’s Burgers. Assume I will love The Venture Brothers if/when I finally watch it. All of your opinions are good.
@mossygreen As Wolfe would say, I find this comment satisfactory. Highly satisfactory.
I guess mine would be Swarovski crystal. It’s just been so long since I’ve been able to keep up my collection.
@Enigma Love to see pic’s of it!!
pokemon
@blndfayth @brandom I think you guys would have something to talk about here.
@blndfayth @Targaryen heck yeah we do. gen 4 is my favorite by far.
For me, it is Overwatch and the Overwatch League.

Now is when I say that I’ve always felt self-conscious about claiming any kind of status as a fan, because I’ve never really considered myself sufficiently committed or knowledgeable. On the other hand, I’m often accused of being a fan, because I’m nerdy, enthusiastic and know stuff. And on a similarly other hand, I do often maintain peculiarly kinds of devotion and gnosis (to be clear, not necessarily a deep or broad knowledge–and I don’t at all mean to be arrogant about it–but selective preoccupation with weird details) even as compared with people who do seem more appropriately labeled super fans. Who the fuck can say? My pathology seems an appropriately meh one.
Here are some enthusiasms:
@joelmw
tl;dr - words.
@njfan
You’re not wrong. One could easily argue that that’s what each of these items is ultimately about; I would make those arguments myself.
And if I had to pick a single fandom, that might be it.
I’ve been a part of the competitive pokemon tcg community for a long time now and even found a random person I knew on here from it!
I’m also very into the attack on titan manga lol
