What is good on HBOmax
3I just had to start my trial cause I needed to binge watch some doctor who. It had been too long.
Amazon is being a dick about firetv and even sideloading it didn’t work. So now I’m running a laptop I bought in 2006 (was good at the time) whose nvidia hdmi audio does not work in windows 10. So Via RGB and a standard audio jack.
To a woot tv I bought in… 2010 or 2011
Anyway. Any suggestions worth keeping this shit show up?

Lovecraft Country!
Raised by Wolves is interesting…Ridley Scott’s new project.
Funny thing is that just last week we were offered free HBO for 3 months and my guy refused to even take it for free!! I thought it was pure rediculousness NOT to take the offer! He was admit that there’s NOTHING but lousy movies on HBO and didn’t want to take the chance of forgetting to cancel when the 3 months was up and be charged even ONE red cent!
Again, pure rediculousness in my opinion!! SMDH
30 years in… and still picking my battles!
@Lynnerizer I normally ignore those as well but it’s been a while since cable was available. Normally it’s a call to cancel vs a pure online thing you can just switch off. And I hate having that call cause they kick you to marketing and just make it a pain.
But they are the only place to stream Doctor Who which I would probably rewatch if I had it 3 months and I watched a few movies. They have the entire harry Potter movies supposedly. DC movies. Random other movies. Made a good distraction for a week. I def wouldn’t keep it full time.
I have it free through (I think) my AT&T internet service. No app for my tv for it, so it has gone unwatched as I’ve got plenty of stuff that works directly on it to watch.
I’ve heard a fair amount of talk about The Vow, and a little about Lovecraft Country and Raised by Wolves. I also hear they had some game show about thrones and dragons or some such, a few people were into it.
Maybe one day I’ll figure out how to get back into it and see if there’s anything good on, and I could speak from personal knowledge at that point. Until then, hearsay is all I got.
Curb Your Enthusiasm!
Vice Principals!
Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle’s stand-up specials! Their specials are old but they hold up well (not necessarily a good thing but you’ll laugh, I think).
- screen mirroring for some Fire TV devices. Good luck and enjoy!
@njfan I’ll have to look at that. I did actually get the app sideloaded and can browse but when I try and play anything it wont take a straight login. it wants google play and that I haven’t been able to successfully get all 4 apks of the right version sideloaded and behaving.
The Simpsons, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos
The new Perry Mason, Doom Patrol, Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon if you’re into that, Friends, the Harry Potter LotR and Jaws collections, Westworld, The Plot Against America, Beforeigners…cripes, hundreds of HBO Original series, tons of films, lots of stuff from other networks… and all 100% commercial-free.
IMHO, at $12/mo HBO Max is the best value in streamers right now. Tons of programming, all commercial-free.
@ruouttaurmind if it just worked it might be. Getting up to fiddle with the laptop to do it is not doing it.
I might have to get a different device. The ironic thing is the only reason I have firetv devices is free promotions from attnow. And att owns hbo. But now Amazon’s being a dick.
@unksol I have the same challenge on Roku. HBO Now and HBO Go apps but no HBO Max. I either cast from my iPad or phone, or more recently I’ve been using my old Xbox One because it has a native HBO Max app. Controlling the Xbox via the gaming controller kinda sux, but fortunately the Xbox and HBO Max app work exceptionally well with Google Assistant voice control and routines.
Alternative to your PC: Assuming your TV doesn’t support casting directly? You could get a $20 Chromecast device and cast from your phone (or a tablet if you have one). More convenient to just keep the phone handy rather than getting up to fuss about with the laptop.
@ruouttaurmind I got it working. Sideloading it works on firetv but it wasn’t giving me the tv sign in screen. I just reinstalled it and it came up this time. I don’t think there’s a work around for roku since it’s not android.
HBO used to be great but now it’s becoming harder and harder to find something good. Mainly keep for John Oliver.
@msqaf00 I just watch him on YouTube or have been since they throw it up after it airs on the west coast
On your hdmi and no audio - it’s an Intel processor thing. The on-chip Intel GPU is taking over the audio and pre-empting the nVidia GPU.
You’ll have to play with manually updating the intel “HD Graphics” drivers or disabling them and possibly setting the BIOS specifically to “discrete GPU” or equivalent to tell the system not to use the Intel CPU’s integrated graphics (and audio). The problem is that it has to before the nVidia GPU gets initialized.
Good luck. One of our HP desktops has had this same issue, and the interwebs are full of folks with the same issue. The PC and laptop makers weren’t prepared for the folks to be using HDMI for more than video by hooking them up to TVs instead of dedicated video-only monitors.
@mike808 this things to old. Doesn’t have an Intel GPU just an nvidia 9600gt I think. It’s never played nice with the hdmi audio under windows 10. I fixed it at one point I think but since it’s sat unused for years and did like two+ years of updates it broke something. Oh well.
@unksol The Intel HD graphics is built into every i3/5/7/9 Core CPU. In the chip itself. It’s not a replaceable part. That’s why there’s a conflict in any PC with a separate discrete GPU.
The video drivers are separate from the audio drivers, and the HD Graphics part of the CPU isn’t letting the nVidia take over the audio like it does for the video.
Check BIOS to disable use of the “integrated” GPU (i.e. the Intel HD Graphics part of the CPU). Check the Intel HD audio drivers are disabled via the Windows Device Manager. There is still hope.
@mike808 I’m well aware. Been doing PC repair/fixes/builds since before the end of highschool. This is a core 2 Duo P8400 in a hp dv7. Before they started integrating GPUs.

I could have sworn I bought it before Q3 08 but i must have saved enough from jobs to splurge a little toward the end of college. Or my memory is putting wrong dates on things. I largely go of where I lived for how long
It was decent when I bought it in college and cost a bit. But it’s over a decade old now lol. Appreciate you trying to help though.
So sideloading hbo max does work. For some reason it wouldn’t give me the tv sign in screen just Google play. Reinstalled it and it popped up correctly this time and let me login through the laptop. So who knows.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Raised By Wolves is worth a look, I agree.
If you never tried Watchmen or The Leftovers, both are very good shows.
@robson haven’t tried any series cause it was just a trial. Was more looking at movies. But since it’s working now… Maybe I’ll try and keep it
The Outsider, Curb Your Enthusiasm, John Oliver
I forgot they had band of brothers… Easily worth a rewatch.
Sucession is from HBO isn’t it?
I’m not watching tv right now, but I hear that show just won a bunch of emmys and is well reviewed.
