What did you give up for lent?
11I say that if that’s your religion and not to offend anybody.
I gave up buying things that I don’t need. It has to be a necessity not a want/pleasure. Then I still have to go through a list in my head to make sure I’m not buying to stockpile at home or bc it’s a good deal. I obviously like to buy things.

Fish.
@phendrick jk
I gave up being naughty.
(But just for now.)
Covid
I’ve had a hard time this year.
Typically I give up alcohol, and thought I was this year, but I had already promised my wife to have a drink with her to celebrate her dad getting the first shot of the Covid vaccine. With the weather his shot got delayed and didn’t happen until yesterday.
I used to give up video games, but since becoming a parent I don’t really have time for them anyway.
I have also previously given up web forums, but I didn’t think of that until now and it’s too late.
I usually eat a few cookies at night. I guess I can give that up? That seems pretty lame, though. I used to know a girl who gave up cookies for Lent, but then ate Fig Newtons. I guess the advertising worked.
I’ve been eating keto for awhile, but letting things slide. For lent I’m focused… Squeaky clean… No dairy, no alcohol, no nuts, no artificial sweeteners.
@bdmcquain Nut’s aren’t Keto?
@bdmcquain @tightwad
Yeah it’s part of the keto diet. My brother and wife have done it from time to time and I’ve read about it.
@tightwad Yes, they are keto, but everyone has different allergies and things they are resistant to in terms of insulin. I barely stay in ketosis around 20n carbs. I decided to try squeaky clean because it eliminates the things people are most likely to have an issue with… Dairy, nuts, artificial sweeteners. It is typically a 30/day program, but using it for lent gives me a different way to focus on God when i want to give up. After Easter I’ll slowly add back nuts and some dairy and see how it goes.
I gave up Lent.
@yakkoTDI Best answer! I’m not religious so I wouldn’t anyway, but given the current hard times everyone is experiencing, I wouldn’t want anyone to have to give up anything else.
@PooltoyWolf @yakkoTDI
I don’t know about that, but in my experience it is by far the most common answer to the question posed.
@yakkoTDI I did too…if I cant mardi gras…I just can’t lent…there…I said it…
@PooltoyWolf @yakkoTDI Lent isn’t always about giving something material. One could give up some time each day to pray, for example. One could do 40 days of kindness - with a new kind activity every day. It’s just about being less about oneself and closer to God. Of course, this is important to those who want a close relationship with God, I understand many do not and I’m not judging for choices.
We were thinking about giving up Capybara …
https://www.atlasobscura.com/foods/capybara-venezuela
@stolicat
I never heard of that before, sounds (and looks) kind of gross!
Btw, are you Venezuelan?
@Lynnerizer No, not Venezuelan. Actually, a big fan of Capybara, the live ones, that is. I was fairly surprised to come across that article about the vatican designating it a fish …
@star2236 so if you’re giving up buying things you don’t need we’ll see you back here in six weeks then?
@katbyter
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I will let myself buy the irks. But I still click everyday and chat.
I was thinking of giving up procrastinating. I’ll get back to you on how that’s going.
I’m giving up what’s left of my sanity
I’m just giving up.
I always thought “giving up” something for lent simply to suffer for six weeks was ridiculous. Doing something to better yourself or the world makes much more sense. Examples: Give up smoking (for good). 40 bags in 40 days (clean out and donate to those in need). Give up social media AND use the time to either read the Bible or help others.
What do I do? Nothing.
@callow “Self-improvement” or “habit-breaking” isn’t really to goal, but giving and reading the Bible and helping others are supposed to be part of Lent. People just don’t tend to talk about it because either a) it’s less individualized and interesting, or b) they’re not really doing that part of it.
Fasting during Lent used to be much more serious. As generally practiced now, at least in Western culture, it’s usually pretty trivial.
@callow 40 bags in 40 days?..can I work ahead and do all 40 in one day…relocating so purging a house…NOT asking for a friend…
@amehzinggrace Ha! I don’t make the rules.
That’s a good question. I even attended Ash Wednesday service and haven’t thought about it yet So I have about 3 things floating around in my head and maybe I’ll just do all 3.
VMPness
@ELUNO i’ve got one of those!
It’s funny to me that there’s all this seafood advertised by stores for Lent because to me seafood has become much more luxurious than meat - it’s gotten so expensive, and meat seems pretty mundane.
I gave up responding to meh questions. … wait, dang it.
I give up flossing. But only for the greater good!
@PlutoIsAPlanet your dentist thanks you!
The remaining 38 days of lent.
I fasted the first two and feel like that counts, especially given that I am not Catholic.
nothing officially… so far though, it looks like i’ve given up leaving the house…
Mom, Dad, and I are all Covid positive, and under quarantine. YAY! at least we’re all in the same boat…
@earlyre oh, that’s a bummer. I hope you all have mild if not asymptomatic cases.
I’m giving up spreadsheets for 40 days. Excellent.
