@heartny these 2 thing are what i came to say. My s22 ultra (the one with the most memory) was full on memory within a week of getting it. Had a big memory card in my old note 10+. Had to move everything over to the internal memory.
@heartny@jnicholson0619 I’d take the removal of all external ports in exchange for better water resistance, except no phone manufacturer seems to do it for that purpose.
@brennyn@heartny@jnicholson0619 They might use it as an excuse, but no, it’s because they want to provide less so that you can be coerced into buying add-on devices and services.
@heartny@jnicholson0619@werehatrack Almost, but they never remove the USB port… and who doesn’t have 47 USB OTG adapters sitting next to their mound of 840 USB chargers?
@brennyn@heartny@jnicholson0619 Actually new Apple Watch Ultra can be used for diving to 100m. Phones only 1-2m so far. For Apple phones anyway, rumor is that if the lightning port goes away completely, instead of becoming usb-C, then iPhone waterproofness would be much better.
Technically, Apple already did, with Lightning. But as it’s functionally equivalent, your point is still currently valid.
But not necessarily for long.
While the EU has put a rule in place which will require that Apple support USB-C without an adapter in the near future, Apple has been throwing tantrums over it. Apparently, Apple had planned to swap to portless design with obligatory inductive charging (like their watch) but the EU reg appears to have nixed that move for that market. Whether they will make an EU-only frame with USB-C while sticking the rest of the world with inductive charging and Bluetooth/5G data transfer and audio connectivity remains to be seen. I suspect that the fantasy of forcing their users to buy AirPods is just entirely too tempting.
@heartny Yep, I want my headphone jack back. I use it less these days but its always the odd times when I didn’t expect to use it and don’t have an adapter with me that I wish it was still there. People use icloud for backup and device to device sync, they won’t drop it for an sd card, so I feel like the icloud install base is pretty much set. So, I wish they would add SD card readers now, esp in ipads. I max out my phone storage so usually not an issue, but have been going used on ipads the last few times, usually low storage for cheap. My 32gb ipad only has room for a couple apps and maybe 1 movie. Cache takes up 1/4+ of the storage alone, OS install another 1/4, then my messages and photos takes up another 1/4-1/3. Basically just 2gbs or so left for apps and media.
Fecking edge-to-edge active touch screen with curved everything, so that as delivered, the phone is absolutely useless from any reasonable standpoint until you buy an accessory cover to provide a noninfuriating grippable surface. It’s getting close to making me want an iPhone, which I would otherwise regard as the electronic equivalent of a kale, IPA and extra-sharp cheese “smoothie”.
The loss of privacy (Blackberry). Every phone today is tracking you and recording you.
And just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get me.
@2many2no Expandable storage? After 3 years with my current phone I have only used 33% of storage. Of course it does have a massive 128gb so that could be why it seems so empty.
Speaking for my parents here… Our carrier recently sent out letters to all of the customers that currently are using 3g only capable phones letting them know that they are terminating 3g service all together so they would have to upgrade to 4g or higher phones and gave all affected customers a $500 credit to help with the switch. So now both of my parents badically were forced to get smart phones which means now I am on smart phone support all day every day. Could they both possibly get the same phone so maybe they could help each other… Hell no! My dad got an iPhone and my mom got a Samsung Galaxy. Nonstop fun for me! Yay!
@sicc574 I feel the continued incompatibility of iOS and Android has hurt the industry most. I should be able to switch from one to the other without worrying about what I am going to lose.
@sicc574@TheCO2 Yeah, never, ever allow relatives who you have to help to pick two DIFFERENT phone religions. Whether you choose light side or dark side (you decide which is which), all must be on the same side.
My in-laws for a while had Windows phones (remember when that was a thing?). All I could do was say « don’t know anything about that ».
@blaineg Back around 1995, when my (deceased) partner’s father asked her for advice about what kind of computer to get, she very explicitly told him that if he wanted her to be able to provide any troubleshooting help at all, it had to be a Windows system, NOT A MAC. So what did he buy? An Apple PowerPC with only the MacOS installed; no Windows. (It was incredibly slow to boot, even by the standards of that day. She eventually inherited it when he died, and our evaluation of its utility was “OK as something to sell to someone else with full disclosure, as soon as we nuke & pave the HD.”)
Making batteries non-removable, removing the headphone port, and the absurdly high cost of new phones definitely hurt, but making it so you cannot just move your SD card over from your old phone to bring over all your pictures and music and instead have to do a long and tedious data transfer and potentially subscribe to some online data storage service really was the last straw for me. I am sticking with my S20+ until either it is no longer usable or a major Android brand brings back the SD card slot.
I swear that industry is one of the greediest ones.
@infornography Be aware that Samsung has changed the formatting of the SD cards at least once, and many of them can’t be mounted or read by a PC with a card reader; sometimes they won’t even transfer cleanly from one phone to the next. I haven’t tested the one in my current S9 for this issue; if your S20 has a PC-readable card, that’s an excellent reason to stick with it as long as possible.
@PocketBrain particularly since you can get a cellular communications card for a lot of laptops, usually for under a hundred bucks. At that point, you can use the laptop as a cell phone. It’s not a really good one from a convenience standpoint, but for some people it would do the job.
No SD card and no headphone jack.

Battery life measured in minutes or hours instead of days and weeks.

@werehatrack Come to the Dark Side

@werehatrack

@katbyter @werehatrack The Emperor’s new groove?
@werehatrack
Have both android and iOS.
When I wanna do computer things on a phone, android.
When I wanna do smartphone things on a phone, iOS.
The dark side is the good side.
/giphy luke, I am your father
Expensive cases
Smart phones. Turned a simple and useful concept, a device that makes and takes calls, into an overly bloated “infotainment” system.
Small displays with good specs. I just want a modern day version of the first generation Moto X from 2013. That phone was comfortable to use.
Flat, boring rectangles and the removal of physical keyboards.
The loss of privacy (Blackberry). Every phone today is tracking you and recording you.
And just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get me.
@tweezak
Nothing deletes anymore
@tweezak it’s only paranoia if it’s not true.
@tweezak They are not out to get you. Having read your texts and seen your browsing history we are…errrrrr…I mean they are staying far away.
No expandable storage, and extra internal memory overpriced by at least 5X.
@2many2no Expandable storage? After 3 years with my current phone I have only used 33% of storage. Of course it does have a massive 128gb so that could be why it seems so empty.
No easily replaceable battery.
@thebigtverberg Can I get an Amen?
@ThunderChicken Amen
@ThunderChicken Preach it, sister!
@thebigtverberg @ThunderChicken Amen, PTL!
@thebigtverberg an easily replaceable battery and SD card slot and I’m in.

@pmarin @sicc574 @TheCO2 When asked what computer they should buy, a friend always tells his relatives to get Mac because they are user friendly.
Then when they inevitably call him for tech support he tells them. “Sorry, I don’t know anything about Macs”.

Honestly, losing the micro SD card slot.
I miss the SD card so much. You could easily add (and transfer!) 1T data.
Now it does almost half what your laptop does! Price? Two laptops!
@PocketBrain particularly since you can get a cellular communications card for a lot of laptops, usually for under a hundred bucks. At that point, you can use the laptop as a cell phone. It’s not a really good one from a convenience standpoint, but for some people it would do the job.
Still using a phone with an earphone jack and SD card slot… I do miss removable batteries!
