@djslack Yes, according to the linked book. Off almost everything goes to China. People come in from remote agricultural areas to strip insulation from wires. And they dont want to go back.
Stupid computer stuff. Azure, .NET, Redis, ServiceBus, SQL (No and Yes variants), things that no one but my coworkers want to hear about. Not even them, I sometimes suspect...
No, not about consumer trends, or where the best catshirts are and what not, but the imprint industry side ... which is surprizing because I don't work in that field.
@Bingo And green. Isn't Barney's cousin green or some nonsense like that? It's been years since I had to suffer through one of those videos, but I think that's right.
Tech stuff, fixing computers, or what tech they should buy. I usually do extensive research on stuff before I buy so I pick up a lot of info about what's "good".
I also do a lot of DIY (i.e. remodeled my family room) so a lot of my friends consult with me on how to do or fix things on their own.
@radi0j0hn I do too much of it for myself, that's why I offer to find stuff for others. I'm addicted to the bargain. I buy some stuff with intentions of selling for profit, but that never happens - I'm 1/2 a step away from a hoarder. A recent score is a 1969 Telefunken receiver and turntable. They are currently jamming at work with some vintage speakers.
@bluebeatpete I taught an (unofficial, non credit) eBay class for 8 years at a local college. Every once in a while I would astound the class with making a lot of $$$$ on something I found or astounding them with an item that seemed worth selling but was not.
Interview audio editing: I am very good at taking a mediocre radio interview and making the guest sound better. This involves removing unneeded dialog, taking out breaths, umms and ahs, rearranging sentence order and sometimes slightly speeding up the guest to make them seem more engaged. I also EQ for vocal presence if needed. Oh yeah, I almost forgot: I wrote two books for digital camera users and about six (audio) books for computer users.
@f00l The early ones (What is Windows? What's a Modem? What is Windows 95? and "The DOS Tape") were all on cassette! Not sure which way to go on the new stuff.
Due to my career, I'm the TV/camera guy. I love rockets though. I was super excited to stand on launch pad 0B at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport last summer and got my picture in front of the flame trench. I've seen two launches, the LADEE mission to the moon in 2013 (6 miles away) and last December's Falcon 9 launch (although I was about 150 miles away, I was looking for it and saw it).
I can bore anyone for hours about my latest audible listen.
My last (was amazing):
Junkyard Planet: Travels in the Billion-Dollar Trash Trade

@f00l
/begin boredom
Did you know buyers swarm N America trying to beat each other for trash and scrap to send to China?
And that due to economies of round-trip shipping, it's profitable for the Chinese to recycle my old Xmas tree lights?
And that the "recycle N American trash" industry has created Chinese billionaires?
/end boredom
@f00l So is that what all the "get rid of it" companies do?
@djslack
Yes, according to the linked book. Off almost everything goes to China. People come in from remote agricultural areas to strip insulation from wires. And they dont want to go back.
Dogs. Just because I have 2 puppies and talk about them all the time and googling every little thing about dogs. I can go on for days.
They really are the human sons I never had.
@looseneck I love dogs.
@Barney I love purple
Stupid computer stuff. Azure, .NET, Redis, ServiceBus, SQL (No and Yes variants), things that no one but my coworkers want to hear about. Not even them, I sometimes suspect...
Also, the Oxford comma.
Mustangs or Ubuntu (yah, I know, probably an unlikely combination of interests, but hey....)
I talk t-shirts.
No, not about consumer trends, or where the best catshirts are and what not, but the imprint industry side ... which is surprizing because I don't work in that field.
Everyone will call or text me when they are looking for the best deal. I tend to always know where things are cheapest.
@conandlibrarian You apparently live near a road where things fall off trucks?
@brandon how did you know??
usually people come to me for smartass remarks. really. though i have no idea why.
Photography, audio stuff, music stuff, concert/festival stuff, some general construction.
Also, on how to be awesome.
@Bingo I think we'd just about be friends in real life
I don't think I have anything. People always think I have special knowledge about everything technical, but I usually don't.
@katylava Google their problem, I'm Feeling Lucky it, tell them how to fix it, and suddenly you're everyone's favorite tech support.
I collect things that are purple, but nobody wants to talk to me about them. I wonder why?
@Barney You must love Mardi Gras. It's a sea of purple!
@Bingo It is? I'll have to go there someday.
@Bingo And green. Isn't Barney's cousin green or some nonsense like that? It's been years since I had to suffer through one of those videos, but I think that's right.
@Barney I'll send you some purple stuff to add to your collection.
@looseneck I'm afraid that might be a futile endeavor. I've got a new mail carrier and I don't think she can read.

Helping locate items from estate sales, thrift stores and pawn shops.
I have too many interests and hobbies...
@bluebeatpete "Helping locate items from estate sales, thrift stores and pawn shops." I do a lot of that for both non-profits and myself.

Board Games. This above all else.
Followed closely by Nintendo.
"Tapped" really needs to stop changing meanings so often across the generations.
@MrsPavlov I'd tap that.
Kitchen related math. Costing, P&L's, yield percent calculations, recipe related ratios. Numbers are fun.
Cats. Especially health issues. But also rescue stuff. And behavior problems.
@ceagee Cat behavior problems or your own?
@Barney both. ;-p

@radi0j0hn
Ok this sounds cool. Are the books on audible or kindle or similar?
@f00l The early ones (What is Windows? What's a Modem? What is Windows 95? and "The DOS Tape") were all on cassette! Not sure which way to go on the new stuff.
@radi0j0hn

I remember cradle modems. I wasnt quite so old back then.

Everyone was starred as part of their GOAT Day participation
@brandon Good job as substitute goat. Always nice to learn more about my fellow weirdos.
