@Thumperchick I assumed medical procedure (and/or sexual adventure; probably something involving orifices), visitors (e.g., in-laws) or–sorta like the visitor scenario)–social engagement (e.g., dinner with current and ex S.O. at the same time).
@ruouttaurmind Don’t laugh, I can handle 105 and 0% humidity way better than I can handle 90 and 80% humidity. That said, the butterfinger ice cream bar from the good humor freezer sure felt good after a day of climbing over validation vehicles in 105 degree heat
@cranky1950 I would much rather have the humidity. It saves a bundle on moisturizer cream’s and keeps you looking years younger. Plus I use my Meh fan-charger too stay nice and cool while I listen to my Meh speakers along with the downloaded songs on my phone. Isn’t life grand.
I will be in Lake Tahoe Thursday and Friday where it will be in the 60’s. Saturday and Sunday I will be in Sacramento where it will 104. How do I pack for that???
@ConAndLibrarian I’m pretty good at packing for different weather conditions. You take a carry on with your unmentionables, Meh socks, ties,undershirts and swimwear. Then when you get to your colder destination just buy what you need. You’ll save a bundle on baggage check-in fees so you’ll come out ahead and have a few new additions to your wardrobe. If your really good what you buy will fit in your carry on for the trip back. Hope that helps it’s the best I can come up with other than just go naked and take a warm Sherpa throw with you. Have a great trip
@ConAndLibrarian I’ve been on trips like that. A US summer road trip that went through Yellowstone and other national parks and ended with a cruise to Alaska. And the European vacation that included both Santorini, Greece and Oslo, Norway. Layers really is what it’s all about in those kind of situations.
@KDemo i used to think that too about cold being best because you can only take off so much when hot. Then i moved to Ft Worth TX for 7 years then back to Philly PA. That set me straight: 105 is perfect, much preferable to 30. (plus i felt cooler in TX with 105 and 60% humidity than Philly 90 and 95% humidity!)
Here, we know the summer prob won’t be too bad when we get reasonable rainfall during winter and spring (we did this year, no drought) and it doesnt go over 100 until after Jun 20, and then only intermittently.
We know we are prob going to have an excellent summer when the 1st 100 day is after July 4th.
@RiotDemon - "Seattle is generally quite temperate, with few days that are unbearably hot and few that are freezing cold. According to the Weather Channel, the average high temperature in winter is somewhere between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, while the daily low temperature is in the high 30s."
Also, we get very few thunderstorms, as there is less humidity than many places. There are, however, amazing temperate rainforests on the nearby Olympic Peninsula.
We’re not as bad off here in West Texas. 105 and 106 for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately my swamp cooler is pretty much at the end of its useful life, and it isn’t working very well at all. It’s been getting up to 90 in the house every day. Fortunately I have my little refrigerated air portable unit that I can point at the sofa for some relief, and living next to the big State Park, it’s still true desert around here so it gets down into the 70s at night. At least it’s not as bad as this:
I was at the local amusement park with my kid yesterday afternoon during a heat advisory. And it has to be pretty darn hot for a heat advisory in the south.
@moondrake I think we have 800% humidity today… I am sweaty in an air conditioned building!!! bleck! Severe thunderstorms rolling in today ( as with most of the eastern seaboard.) Just in time for the commute home.
@mikibell send me some rain. Before and after it’s a killer as the swamp coolers quit working. But while it’s raining it’s bliss, at our elevation rain is always cold.
@mikibell Last night we had the worst of the options. Clouds, thunder, lightning, humidity, but no rain. I felt so sorry for the trees, you could feel them begging for rain.
@ruouttaurmind We’re going to be heading to that neighborhood for Westercon on 4th of July weekend. Visiting Phoenix in July has always seemed like an exercise in insanity. But we go where the cons are.
@ruouttaurmind My co-worker went to Tempe on Friday, he said it was like walking into a wall of heat when he left the airport. He said it is cooler in India!
@moondrake I’ve often wondered about the wisdom of scheduling a con in the middle of July. Seems like it would be mighty uncomfortable being in costume.
@mikibell Yesterday afternoon the high temp outside my office was 118*. The wind was blowing at 9mph. It’s like standing in front of a hair dryer, set on high. Riding in the car with the windows down is like taking a trip through a blast furnace.
Ours isn’t nearly that bad, but we’re under a flex alert, which, oddly enough, doesn’t start until 4pm and lasts until 9pm. They usually run 11am to 6pm.
I guess they expect a major hit when folks get home from work.
We have all three ceiling fans going full speed and while the temp was cooler outside than in this morning, we had the whole house fan running. Then turned it off when the temp was even. The windows are closed, blinds drawn as well as the blinds on the outside of the house.
I can hear the attic fan going, too.
We usually only run the A/C when it’s humid. It’s not humid. It’s just hot.
@ruouttaurmind is it an older unit?
I’m not sure how a.c.s work in the heat because here they are basically exchanging out the humid air and that’s what cools it down.
@RiotDemon Yup, it’s the original heat pump installed in 1983 when the house was built. Well past it’s “Best by:” date I’m sure.
Considering the excessive outdoor temp, I’m impressed this old unit is managing to maintain 85* inside the house right now. Of course as the sun sets the inside temperature will quickly begin to fall to the 82* set on the thermostat.
@ruouttaurmind I understand the old unit issue. There was a few years that I dealt with an old a.c. unit. Eventually told the landlord that if he didn’t replace the unit that we were moving out. It would run all day and almost all night. The electric bill was crazy during the summer. Amazing what a difference it made.
@ruouttaurmind my honey has been known to spray our air conditioner with cold water on really hot days to help it keep up…it works for a little while…then it gets hot all over again
From tomorrow (Sat) thru Sun of the following week is supposed to be oddly cool here due to storms. Highs in the 70’s thru low 90’s.
How utterly lovely.
Feels like a guided stress-reduction meditation, just to read the forecast.
This may actually be a fairly cool summer overall. Say, only 2-3 weeks of 100F plus for the next 3 months. Or even less! My brain gets excited just imagining it.
However:
I know we’re wimps here compared to AZ.
But it was over 100F here.
T.O.D.A.Y.
Just want you to know that I noticed.
@cranky1950, I blame you for unpleasantly hot weather.
@f00l It’s actually going to be pretty pleasant here for the next week or two. Highs hovering around 111* with only a couple of days expected to go to 115*.
@ruouttaurmind meanwhile back on earth, it’s back in the upper 80s during the day here and slips to the mid 70s at night. Unfortunately August will come eventually.
@f00l sometimes it rains every afternoon for what seems like weeks. The sky looks grey when it’s overcast… I’m not sure if it looks grey without any clouds.
@RiotDemon
I thought I remembered seeing it s few times more grey than blue, from humidity. Late summer.
But no clouds, no rain that day. I’ve never seen that anywhere else.
I saw the title and got a bit worried about the content of the thread.
Hope your a/c is working!
@Thumperchick A/C seems to be in tip-top shape, thanks! Kinda wishing I had a swimming pool right now though. Or lived near the beach.
@Thumperchick Mine’s not; they topped off the Freon Wednesday to get me through until they replace the system next week.
@Thumperchick I assumed medical procedure (and/or sexual adventure; probably something involving orifices), visitors (e.g., in-laws) or–sorta like the visitor scenario)–social engagement (e.g., dinner with current and ex S.O. at the same time).
Just be happy you don’t live around here.
KuoH
@kuoh I’m actually working in Cave Creek right this moment. It feels a little warm, but I wouldn’t have guessed it’s 2960*
@kuoh wtf?
@Yoda_Daenerys
@ruouttaurmind It’s a dry heat.
Seems to be a good time to head for the mountains.
@cranky1950 I second that emotion!
I’d say the answer to your username is yes (to live under a broiler, as it seems you do).
@KDemo But it’s a dry heat!?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
/giphy it’s a dry heat
@giphy, you’re a moron. Cat vid or no, you’re a total idiot.
@ruouttaurmind - But it’s a dry cat.

@cranky1950 Well no wonder you’re cranky. Makes total sense now
For sure. Low of 66, bring out the winter jacket for tonight.
@MrMark
I will be in Lake Tahoe Thursday and Friday where it will be in the 60’s. Saturday and Sunday I will be in Sacramento where it will 104. How do I pack for that???
@ConAndLibrarian Hmm… a fashion challenge, to be sure…

I’ll take Washington weather, thankyouverymuch.
@KDemo Cripes, that’s practically Arctic conditions!
@KDemo
Sounds lovely. Am a little envious.
@KDemo it was lightly misty and 55 degrees this morning in Seattle. Perfect!
@UncleVinny - I agree, perfect!
@KDemo I’d much rather have the 105 than the 44.
Doesn’t it get old being wet and never seeing the sun shine?
@2many2no - Nope! When it’s cold you can put on a coat. When it’s hot, you don’t have many choices.
I moved here from the Bay Area partly for the weather.
And it’s green!
@KDemo Sorry, just can’t do it.
I like my lawn to be crispy.
@KDemo i used to think that too about cold being best because you can only take off so much when hot. Then i moved to Ft Worth TX for 7 years then back to Philly PA. @f00l I’d be a whole lot envious if Mt Mitchell were not an hour away from the house. When it’s 100 in Charlotte it’s in the hi70’s up there.
@cranky1950

@KDemo That’s funny. I think the Bay area it’s way too cold. Always foggy and cold when I’m there. I live in OC.
@KDemo how is the winter there? Florida weather is a little miserable right now.
@RiotDemon That’s probably an understatement.
@2many2no yes, yes, it does!! It sucks big time.
@f00l - Many say that summer starts on July 5, here as well. The 4th is often overcast, sometimes drizzly.
@Fuzzalini - Summer fog is usually restricted to SF proper, and south to Pacifica. It can be an oasis when the temp rises in surrounding areas.
@KDemo I knew I was in the wrong corner of the country.
@cranky1950 ok, it’s a lot miserable. I think you said that you lived in Florida at one point, so you understand.
@RiotDemon - The rain and overcast isn’t for everyone. Just ask @moonhat!
@KDemo I’m pretty much a vampire here in Florida, so it might be better.
I hate moving though. Unless everyone I knew also moved. I hate trying to start over. It’s already hard enough to make real life friends.
@RiotDemon You have IRL friends? Now you’re just showing off!
/giphy show off
Relevant AND Emperors New Groove? In the same result? Giphy! You’re finally warming up to me!
@cinoclav - Thank you for reinforcing my gif choice.
@KDemo Ha - I was on my phone and yours hadn’t shown up. Great minds y’know!?

@moondrake
Well, let’s hope they livestream the weather, at the very least!
Tuesday is gonna be rough.
Then I don’t need a jacket!
thanks ruouttaurmind
I was at the local amusement park with my kid yesterday afternoon during a heat advisory. And it has to be pretty darn hot for a heat advisory in the south.
From the frying pan into the fire, innit. Literally.
@ruouttaurmind - 120° F is the new 49° C.
@KDemo Ha! Fair one!
@ruouttaurmind
/image “centigrade”
@f00l Yes.
Actually, “centigrade” is considered archaic. The word itself refers only to a 100-division scale, which can be any physical measure.
7 this evening. At least it’s a dry heat.
@moondrake I think we have 800% humidity today… I am sweaty in an air conditioned building!!! bleck! Severe thunderstorms rolling in today ( as with most of the eastern seaboard.) Just in time for the commute home.

@moondrake so sorry… wish I could send rain your way!
@mikibell Last night we had the worst of the options. Clouds, thunder, lightning, humidity, but no rain. I felt so sorry for the trees, you could feel them begging for rain.
Blah. Knowing it’s coming doesn’t make it any more palatable.
On the way home this afternoon at 5:30 (the overnight low is 99*; FML):
@ruouttaurmind
You do have my sympathies.
@ruouttaurmind Would ya look at that wind-chill, making it feel almost 10 degrees colder! Brrrrrr…
KuoH
@kuoh Kinda makes you wonder what I’m on about, with an arctic blast like that.
@ruouttaurmind We’re going to be heading to that neighborhood for Westercon on 4th of July weekend. Visiting Phoenix in July has always seemed like an exercise in insanity. But we go where the cons are.

/giphy Phoenix hair dryer
@narfcake Poor kitty!
@ruouttaurmind so what’s worse, the dry heat or the soaking wet heat of Florida?
@RiotDemon Until the temp exceeds 114 or so, I’ll take the dry heave. Any hotter than that and I’ll take my chances with the gators.
@ruouttaurmind

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/06/20/533662790/its-too-hot-for-some-planes-to-fly-in-phoenix
@mikibell It is. They’re anticipating another flight restriction this afternoon as well. Potentially 123* where the airport is located.
@ruouttaurmind Engineering for superhot areas is going to become very popular.
At least with the wind chill it only feels like… wait… NVM.
@ruouttaurmind what’s the humidity, 0%? Geez, that’s hot.
@RiotDemon right now it’s cooled to a brisk 118* and the humidity is 5%.

Yeah but we might get rain. Unusually lots and lots of rain perhaps. Actual summer rain perhaps c
So we’re better.
Hey you Floridians: does it rain there in summer just about every other afternoon or something?
Is there so much humidity that sometimes by late afternoon the cloudless sky is more silver than blue?
@f00l sometimes it rains every afternoon for what seems like weeks. The sky looks grey when it’s overcast… I’m not sure if it looks grey without any clouds.

You can have it, Arizona.
@KDemo
That’s not normal late-June temp there, is it? You are hotter than we are.
86F, which is more than a bit lovely amd unexpected.
@f00l - Not normal not normal not normal
