I bought the patio heater last year and while it was more than I bargained for, it was good. The remote broke in like five seconds though, so I don’t know, maybe I’ll buy this one just for the remote.
Per the writeup, what ‘power station’ (read: giant-sized power bank) has Meh sold that will power a 1,500 watt space heater at all, let alone for more than 5 minutes?
@PooltoyWolf@TimW I looked into heating my minivan with a small electric heater over christmas so I wouldn’t have to rent a place to sleep on the way there since I had to bring my cats. Everything I read indicated that this just wasn’t possible to power one for very long.
@Kidsandliz@TimW It’s because electric heating just draws a lot of power no matter how you slice it. They make cheap 12 volt automotive heaters that plug into the cigarette lighter socket, but you have to run the engine to keep those from draining your battery, and then you’re just burning more fuel…
@PooltoyWolf You’d need at least a 15A circuit (1.65K W @ 110V with nothing else on it) to run one of these reliably. Power Banks or Generators within the 2000W range would be needed.
@dahobbs9 The “Captain” learned his measuring skills in the Pool Guys Training School… “Depth is measured from the top to the bottom” OBTW in for the 2 pack, if I can get comfortable with the tip over shut off technology!
I appreciate your comment about 1500 watts being 1500 watts. They are all the same. That said, radiant heaters are a better bet than this type of heat - even at the same1500 watts output.
@Joeinoh@rpstrong I would chime that it depends on the space you’re trying to heat and how fast you want the space to heat up. I have a radiant heater and space heater and I’ve got three spaces: a tiny closet bathroom, a spacious attic loft, and a work garage. The radiant heater is like a heat lamp: if you’re standing near it, you’re not cold, but anything outside the “light” is frigid city. The space heater actually warms the room creating a comfortable space, but it’s also working against the insulation (or lack of) that is causing heat to leave the room.
Also, do not use an extension cord with these - plug them directly into an outlet. Do not plug both of these into one receptacle - it will overload and trip your circuit.
@pmarin Amazon video reviews show them. Listing on Amazon says up to 45 decibels…take that with a grain of salt. Most of these are loud enough that u don’t want them on while you’re on a video call. Try Vornado ones for quieter operation in my experience.
@TimW Thanks, that would be my assumption too. A size like this will have a small high-RPM fan usually. Some are quieter than others but it won’t be quiet.
As you suggest some Vornado with the large slower fan will be quieter. Also I have a Dyson with heat. It’s not silent but makes the Dyson “whoosh” which is hard to explain. I found it OK but it upset my cat at first till he got used to it,
Of course quietest are thermal type with no fan, either in oil radiator style or small baseboard heater type. Take longer to warm up but good to leave on in a bedroom or something.
@Kyeh@lisagd@macromeh They are out back getting more firewood for the woodstove. A good woodstove can put out about 10x the BTU output of a plug-in electric heater. And up there, you need it.
Surprisingly, seem to be some sold in the vicinity of Los Angeles. Would’ve thought they generally wouldn’t need them there, especially with all the current fires!

Digital thermostat is lovely. Mine does that, plus I can set the sleep timer for my work day and have it start an hour before I get back.

@PooltoyWolf put it on low so it’s 1000 or 750 or something like that.
@TimW I don’t think one has been sold here that’s much larger than about 600 watts, and something any larger than that would likely be very expensive.
EDIT: Even if the wattage is a bit over the draw, the heater wouldn’t run for any meaningful period of time before depleting the battery capacity.

@Kidsandliz @PooltoyWolf @TimW at that point you should buy the propane gun that was sold here last month

Those wussy power banks you’ve sold could never crank out the 1500W needed for these - most of the circuits in my house can’t do that.
@stolicat Glad I’m not the only one who spotted that.

The Dimensions are all wrong captain(it’s taller than it is deep)

@dahobbs9 IN FOR THE TWO PACK!!!
Jack approved.

“• Customizable comfort with a digital thermostat temperature range from 41°F to 95°F”
So will this warm my space to 41° “IN 2 JUST SECONDS” in the summer?
“$218 at Amazon”… I saw at least two other listings for this item at Amazon for $29.99 each (not a two pack) with free shipping with Prime.
@iggy7 Maybe whomever wrote this up was drinking too many margaritas the heater on and forgot how to google because they were all warm and cosy?
When I googled it most of the prices I saw were between $40 and $50 for one. Regardless it makes this price for 2 reasonable.
@iggy71 space heaters bottom out on Amazon around the $25 range in winter, and about $15 in summer (refurbished)
@pakopako Good info. My point was the deceptive overinflated Amazon comparison by meh for this particular model and functionality.
Does it have to oscillate or can it be fixed with no oscillation?
@ojohn oscillation can be turned off according to reviews on Amazon (and pictures of the remote and control panel show oscillation button)
They are 109 each on Amazon = 218 for 2
@denvette73 On that page. Googling they are far, far cheaper, however the price is still less than it would be for 2 elsewhere.
I appreciate your comment about 1500 watts being 1500 watts. They are all the same. That said, radiant heaters are a better bet than this type of heat - even at the same1500 watts output.
@Joeinoh That would depend. A radiant only heats one side of you; these heat the air around you.
@Joeinoh @rpstrong I would chime that it depends on the space you’re trying to heat and how fast you want the space to heat up. I have a radiant heater and space heater and I’ve got three spaces: a tiny closet bathroom, a spacious attic loft, and a work garage. These both can crank up to 1500W, but depending on what I’m doing and where I’m doing it, I use one over the other. The workplace gets the radiator; the bathroom needs comfort; the loft could use both (but really needs better insulation)
Also, do not use an extension cord with these - plug them directly into an outlet. Do not plug both of these into one receptacle - it will overload and trip your circuit.
Your local fire department
@Joeinoh or use an extension cord rated to 1500 watts!
@Joeinoh @TimW You did buy one of these right?
@Joeinoh @TimW yes, an extension cord rated for 15 amps should be fine.
I wouldn’t go smaller than 14 gauge, 12 gauge for long runs.
Anybody know how loud the fan is on these? Also if it has a lower-heat lower-speed sleep mode?

@pmarin @TimW This one has two fans - probably fairly quiet.
Interesting that nobody in Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota has bought one of these. It seems like heaters would be pretty useful there.
@lisagd They probably have to thaw their keyboards/mice before they can order.
@lisagd @macromeh They probably all have much better ones already.
@Kyeh @lisagd @macromeh They are out back getting more firewood for the woodstove. A good woodstove can put out about 10x the BTU output of a plug-in electric heater. And up there, you need it.

What’s the white covering? An air filter?
