Video's from meh.com phantom 1.1.1 (or any other drone).
3I created a new thread so we can post vidoes taken by our new meh.com phantoms! Here is one I took a few days ago with my new gimbal. You can see a little shaking going on because it was real windy that day. I put my camera in 1080p mode. It's usually in 720p mode.
Oh, it looks like I almost filipped and crashed the phantom right before I landed. I saw someone on youtube accidently pull the same unfortunately maneuver and actually crashed. I think I made a sudden move and the wind almost knocked it over.

Wow! You really covered some distance there! Any issues maintaining control at alt with all the wind? I occasionally get a creeping "so this is what $300 blowing away looks like..." feeling if I get too much alt and the gusts pick up.
@ruouttaurmind When I went towards the water tower, it took a while because the winds were, i'd guess 15mph or so. When I flew in the opposite direction, I covered alot of ground. That is when I should have noted not to go too far. When I was calling it back, it took a long time to get to me. You can see me walking towards the drone when it got near me. I moved it into the open field as I didn't want the winds to slam it against the bathroom, but it started to land by itself. I was lucky it didn't land in someone's yard. The GPS did a good job keeping it within 10 ft or so where I held it, but it used up alot of my battery.
@garyhgaryh WEEEoooooWEEEEooooo <-- the sound of the motors compensating for the wind
Here's a video I made the other day. 12 stories up, trying to stay steady enough to capture the colors changing on this sign. Filmed with a GoPro3+ Silver.
@kcarpenter528 having it land due to low battery in a city environment sucks. Once it lands, there are people around that will swoop it up in a heartbeat.
@garyhgaryh yeah. I try to mitigate that by only flying half my battery time. I'd hate to loose all that money.
From my stock FC40. You can see it was pretty windy that day, but had good control and GPS lock did its thing.
@djslack I was wondering why your video was so shaky... then I saw the trees bowing! LOL! Looks like it was pretty gusty. You did a great job keeping it under control.
@ruouttaurmind A gimbal would help a lot, too. This was probably my 10th flight or so, it was a year ago and I'd just gotten it.
I also hadn't learned yet that it's much smoother to fly forward (or any direction) through descent than to come straight down, elevator style, through your own prop wash. That's an idea for another thread, think I'll go start it now.
@djslack I like the part where you flew it over the bridge - not over it, but through it.. lol.
You can also see my carrying case in the beginning being used as a takeoff/landing pad. It's a Plano gun case, similar to a Pelican but I got a good deal on it. Very sturdy, i recommend it. You do have to remove the props for packing it, but that's no big deal.
@garyhgaryh Thanks! That was with a crosswind too, the gps mode really helps. And thanks @ruouttaurmind too, realized i didn't say thanks above.
This is a clip from the first flight with my 1.1.1
No gimbal at that point.
@nltownsend843 Nice backyard. If you don't mind me asking, what camera are you using? You got some major fisheye going on there, but the angle didn't seem that wide (or maybe it is, just just compressed).
@garyhgaryh
Its a hero2, no idea what the settings where on though.
From a friend's son:
No gimbal. Camera fixed to quad (using anti-jello mounts). I wish I had this kind of control.
@SIMBM At 3:25 in the first video, did the copter just do a flip? Watching these videos make wanna step up my game!
@garyhgaryh Yes on the flip.
The pilot is old school. He built up his quad specifically for FPV and video (two different cameras), and it doesn't have 6-axis stability. That is, if you let go of the control sticks it does not self-right. Makes it interesting to fly.
@SIMBM Heck of a ground station he has set up. High gain flat panel antenna on his receiver. Looks like maybe a TX booster on that tripod as well.
Good editing, similar to what a guy did for a San Diego paean using a Phantom 2 and a gimballed GoPro:
@fultonmartin This is a beautiful video! Is that you at the end of the video?
@fultonmartin Damn, that guy has nuggets of steel. I get worried when I venture more than a 100 meters or so. This guy had to be half a mile or more from some of those shots.
@garyhgaryh Unfortunately, no. It was a lot of work--he shot it all around sunrise (less chance of getting busted flying in exclusion zones around airports?) and I'm sure it took a lot of editing...
I just put a cheap Chinese gimbal on my Phantom, and am planning on uploading something, if I ever manage to get to a place more scenic than my back yard.
Hey guys, today the wife and I decided to tandem bike at the Alameda Creek Trail at Coyote Hills. Of course I brought the phantom. Hauled it in a Burley trailer. This is the first time I tested out the FPV and tilt mod outside my backyard. I didn't like the way the drone handled in the yard because it felt too heavy with the vtx, gimbal, camera, and the dreaded AV cable. I've worked around the stuttering tilt so I figured I will only run into the issue once in a while.
Well, I must say the phantom handled very well and stabled. I'm not sure why such a change in behavior, but the thing was a pleasure to fly. I didn't even think my FPV was that great because I was unhappy with the way everything worked out, but today FPV was wonderful and allowed me to get shots I would normally not be able to frame without it. I also ended up attracking so many people. A guy asked me about the drone, how much it cost, and asked if it was ok to take pictures. I've made three videos. Here is the first of three. Let me know what you think. Pay particular attention to the tilting :).
2 of 3:
@garyhgaryh Snatched right from the sky on final approach? Sweet!
@ruouttaurmind Yes, I've been snatching most of my landings lately. I've gotten the hang of it. Saves the camera and gimbal on hard landings.
3 of 3: I like this one the best. Flew it higher than the last two flights and you can see the gimbal freaking out when pointed down, but I got it to "chill" out :).
@garyhgaryh IIRC, you're using the H1 for these, right? Nice flights. Is your wife pretty tolerant? Or even supportive? :-)
@ruouttaurmind Yes, using the Hero 1 (or Hero HD). She's pretty tolerant, but she's kinda irked I got myself into another hobby. I really get into things (by being obessive/nit picky) that I end up ignoring her so my wife thinks she takes a back seat to my hobbies.
Quick lunchtime flight behind my office.
@ruouttaurmind You have the "cheap" chinese gimbal we both have on the Cheerson CX-20? Pretty stable. Nice video! Where are you located? I love the cactuses!
@garyhgaryh Thanks! It's behaving pretty well. It holds it's position much closer than the Phantom (no TBE) and I can easily upload autonomous flight plans to the CX-20 which makes it more camera friendly. The office is in Cave Creek, AZ. Little semi-sleepy tourist town and retirement community north of Phoenix.
I saddled up the Quanum Nova with the 2D gimbal this morning and headed into the mountains for a quick morning video before the rain comes. @garyhgaryh, skip to 01:00 for a prime example of what DOESN'T happen with Tali's 3D gimbal. I was really struggling with the updrafts and crosswinds on that landing. LOL!
@ruouttaurmind I love where you're sitting. I flew the phantom today at a picnic and I noticed the shakiness is coming from the rotations I'm doing. If I want to make my videos look professional, I'm going to have to get a 3D gimbal. I got a volleyball match on video thanks to the phantom. When I brought her in, 8-10 young kids chased after the p1. When I landed they all wanted to fly it. I told them I'll put it up in the air and they can use the left stick only. One girl almost flipped the p1 so I decided to pack it up and call it a day after only going through 3 of my 6 batteries. Better safe than sorry. These kids are from our church so I didn't want to be a mean old fart.
@garyhgaryh It's the mean guy, Gary "Get off my lawn!" H. LOL! I need more batteries. After the hilltop flight I hiked into the mountains about four miles and got a few good strafing runs on the desert poppies. Low batt warning and land... only to discover I forgot to hit the record button on my camera... and no more batteries left to try again. Well, I have the memories anyway... :-)
@ruouttaurmind I mean the "right " stick only in my last comment. Oh man your story reminds me about two weeks ago I went to a preserve. I had trailered my phantom in with my bike trailer only to find out I left my SD card at HOME!! I only flew it once, packed up and left. I have a friend who gave me a stock battery, used. It last about 3.5 mins. I kepted it together with my stock one and today I forgot the one I was suck in my phantom was this used battery and I almost had the p1 land at the end of the park because I didn't expect it to run out of juice so soon. I saw it landing far away so I decided to bring her back in asap.. Just in time too, cuz the led was blinking red rapidly all the way down. But I didn't forget to hit record :).
@garyhgaryh Just grabbed a couple extra batteries on eBay. 2700mAh. Nothing special, no big bargain, two for $31, but at least I have them now. Oh, shipping from Chicago so no long wait from China. Added bonus. http://www.pulsebattery.com/batteries/pulse-ultra/plu25-27003-pulse-lipo-2700mah-11-1v-25c.html
@ruouttaurmind Hey bud, HK has the multistar 4000mah batteries in stock in the east coast warehouse. I ordered three because it's the same amount of shipping.
@garyhgaryh You think that's gonna fit inside the Phantom? Or are you planning on that for the dual battery setup? Looks promising. I wonder what kind of run time they're delivering. EDIT: Just watched a YouTube review of the MultiStar 4000. Guy says he's getting 14 minutes on standard rotors and 16 min. on 9 inch rotors. I may have to bite the bullet and get one!
@ruouttaurmind @garyhgaryh I was just looking at a set on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Multistar-4000mah-10C-20C-Lipo-3S-11-1v-High-Capacity-Battery-XT60-Xt-60-US-/151587267888 price seems reasonable. I think I'll give it a try.
@sportykev HobbyKing.com price is $25 each. They want another $11 shipping to me. So that eBay price is about right.
@ruouttaurmind is HK legit? nothing is SSL enabled on the cart process. Makes me nervous :) I need more powerrrrrrrrr
@sportykev Oh ya, HK is legit. If you're worried about SSL, use PayPal checkout, or get a one-off transaction number from your credit card company. They assign a limited-use number authorized only on a specific day for a specific amount. After that transaction is complete, the number becomes invalid. I can do this with my Discover and my Chase Visa. Don't know about the other cards, haven't tried. But I think it's pretty common.
@ruouttaurmind It will fit, but you will have to dremel the opening a bit.. I plan to put it in the bay. I will only use the dual battery setup as an experiment..:) I know the weight distribution is not ideal.
@sportykev kev: why pay $10 more when you can get it at HK for $10 less? I waited over a month for it to come in. Or you can buy it from me for $34+ shipping.. I'll make some money from you.
@ruouttaurmind Oh i forgot about shipping, but shipping 3 batteries was only $10 at HK. @sportykev they are legit. I've only ordered from them two previous times (this is my 3rd order). Got my orders shipped within a week. Everything brand new.
My third flight with the dual battery setup. First time with FPV which dropped out so often I had to stop using it. Think the camera's antenna may have been misaligned and will try again now that I've reset them back to what was in the picture for it.
Followed by trying to fly with a single battery without swapping out the extenders and dual battery mount plates. I aimed it at me and couldn't help but laugh the thing was wobbly as all hell figured the video was going to be a complete wash. But it looks like the Hero 3+'s image stabilization works rather well.
@DJMajickMan So on the dual battery flight I count... about 15:45 actual flight time with camera and VTX running? That's not bad. Is there a gimbal on there too?
@ruouttaurmind not yet
@DJMajickMan Still, you've added 50-60% more flight time with the dual battery setup. Not bad. Have you done any post-flight battery analysis? I'm curious if you're getting a balanced current and voltage delivery from them.
@DJMajickMan You flip alot! :( Is that due to the battery weight distribution?
@DJMajickMan Haha I see you laughing in the 2nd video.. What type of goggles do you have?
@garyhgaryh Flips are due mostly to sharp turning at low levels. Have not had any issues with weight distribution. Attached velcro to them and the skids so they don't slide. Goggles are Fatshark http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N3WQXIK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and the camera died in today's tumble. lost the lens cap so nomore focus :( What are you using if you're doing FPV?
@DJMajickMan I'm using a gopro hero HD, boscom 600mw vtx/vrx, and an lcd monitor. I am looking to buy the skyzone from hobby king very soon. I told you i'll install my dual bat mount today. Haven't done it yet. Family commitments.
@DJMajickMan Here is my receiver. I just put on my new sunshade hood last night. Didn't think it'll fits almost perfectly.
@garyhgaryh The more I think about my flipping issue I'm wondering if it's because all of my weight is so low on the Phantom. Between how low the batteries are hanging and the camera I'm thinking I've put the weight to low and that's causing the issues with low level high speed turns allowing it to flip a little more out than I need. I'm going to try adjusting both the camera and batter locations later to see if that helps resolve this issue.
@DJMajickMan I would thing lowering the weight would make it less prone to flipping.. maybe I'm wrong.
@garyhgaryh that was my initial thought too. but I'm wondering if it swinging that weight off to one side is what's causing it to kick even further. Sort of a pendulum. If it was a non moving weight it'd probably be a different story.
@DJMajickMan I didn't think about that. You have a point there because the phantom would take much longer to correct itself when you swing it from side to side. That would explain my near flips that is occurring now with gimbal, camera, and vtx. If I add batteries it will get worse.
@garyhgaryh I used the extensions and put mine lower. I'm thinking I need to undo that and have them closer to the normal batter level and that should help counteract that excess swing. If you did dual batteries right at the top that should counter your camera weight being low.
@DJMajickMan I dug up my dual battery "kit". Thinking about installing it tonight.
Volleyball game - look at how many kids are chasing the drone at the end.
@garyhgaryh You're like Pied Piper! LOL!
@ruouttaurmind haha.. I counted at least 9 or 10 kids. And when I landed they wanted to fly it. That could of turned into a disaster as one girl almost flipped it and then I decided to call it a day after 1 more kid.
@garyhgaryh you're a braver man than I. I wasn't about to let them fly it. Especially since it was running going solid red on full throttle. They'd have launched it and it would have probably fallen from the sky and broke into pieces. Can't wait for more batteries to arrive so I can do more flights. Haven't tried the single battery option again after watching the shake. To worried it'll damage the quad.
@DJMajickMan HK has the multistar 4000mah batteries back in stock. I just ordered 3 of them. I'll try them on the dual battery setup.
@garyhgaryh That's about 50 grams per battery more weight than my 2700's but with 9443 blades you might be okay.
@DJMajickMan currently running the stock p1.1.1 blade. I have two sets of 9443 (genuine and knock offs) that I have no put on yet. Just being lazy I guess.
@garyhgaryh I should be getting Carbon Fiber 9443's today if the shipping data is right
@DJMajickMan let me know how they work. I'm not a huge fan of CF blades.
@garyhgaryh yeah they are risky. Especially if people are around. And you need to remember yourself to stay back.
@garyhgaryh Must say I'm impressed these came mostly ballanced. Of the six props only one appears to have been over shaved. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SINJDW2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@DJMajickMan After watching this I fear carbon fiber blades. LOL! (WARNING: if you don't react well to the sight of blood and injuries, please do not watch, though I guess the title slide sort of ruins that already, innit) Those rotors aren't too bad a price if the quality is decent.
@ruouttaurmind Already saw this. Hmmm I got some Carbon fiber scraps from a company online and they included two large round disks I might have to make my own carbon fiber prop guards. They'll be straight out the side not tilting up but...a guard is better than none.
@ruouttaurmind Ouch. Some guy on another list cut his chin when his CF blades hit a branch and it bounced back and sliced his chin. I would hate for something like that to slice my eye.
Apparently to these kids Drone's are Nazi Germany or aliens.
and they all wanted to fly. Rough winds post storm so flight time was down. and I lost my FPV camera on this one. lost the lens.
@DJMajickMan haha i see what u mean! Looks like they were in a shooting stance with their finger guns.
@DJMajickMan Your drone has a very unique tone. The crash was spectacular. Getting surrounded!!!
@DJMajickMan you also have a ton of flight time. How?
@sportykev dual 2700 mAh batteries on carbon fiber battery mounts. Tone may be from having the completely sealed GoPro case.
I documented some plantings a canyon group is doing behind my house with my Phantom:
