@Pavlov why not? I bought the set last time as a set for the family to keep in the kitchen so my tools don't get misplaced. So far they have held up great for things like tightening screw on the door hinges and hanging pictures. My kids have used them a lot and other than losing some pieces (which is why I bought them their own set instead of losing mine) everything has been great. For the price and the right situation, I think these could be a great solution for a lot of people.
@Superjimtendo@Pavlov agreed. I bought a version of these when they were a two-fer. They're actually okay for the low low price at which they're offered.
@Superjimtendo@mrshl Then all I can say is you've never had the need or desire to invest in quality tools. I'd rather loan my children a tool I know will not break and injure them and teach them how to replace the tool when they are finished than risk buying junk. The right tool for the job is not necessarily the least expensive - sometimes a deal isn't a deal in the long run.
@Pavlov I'm sorry, I missed where these were for repairing the space shuttle. By all means, go with Craftsmen when you can. But for the $8 I spent, I used the grabber tool to finally get that damn hot wheels car out of that weird hole at the base of the stairwell. No children or animals were harmed.
@mrshl so sad to inform you Craftsman tools have been crap (perhaps not quite this crappy) for at least 10-15 years. But otherwise your point is valid. For some scenarios, cheap, disposable tools have a purpose.
@RedOak since we're informing, and i'm admittedly unhandy, what tools are considered the gold standard. i.e., the kind of tools that might be better suited as heirlooms for children afraid of injury?
@Pavlov Just a bit elitist and presumptuous, there, eh? Assuming he's not had the need to invest in quality tools? Sounds like he has, and wishes to protect them when appropriate to do so. You say, "The right tool for the job is not necessarily the least expensive - sometimes a deal isn't a deal in the long run," but he made it clear that these WERE the right tool for the jobs he described, and thus, they were indeed a deal for him in the long run. (Although, he might have found an even better deal for similar tools at the dollar store?)
@RedOak If you are a mechanic, get Snap-on, Mac, or one of the other professional brands. But Craftsman hand tools are still decent for the weekend mechanic or repairperson. Now, their power tools - that's another story. That is more a product of the design and which vendor is making them at the time, although I haven't seen/heard of any decent power tools from them in over 20 years.
@RedOak Who cares if craftsman wont hold up more than 10 years...if a tool breaks you walk into sears and hand them it and they hand you a new one...LIFETIME warranty at its finest here.
@obxer Elitist and presumptuous? Absolutely. Don't forget judgmental and all around rich asshole. I'm fortunate enough to be able to buy Snap-on / Mac and not blink at retail. IME, you get what you pay for.
@rizzo297 ZCraftsman only replaces model for model - number for number. About 15 years ago they started changing the model numbers of all their tools on a three-four year cycle (sometimes faster). Need a replacement for that wrench, sorry, they don't carry that model any longer. This is why I will never shop at Sears again . . . and yeah, their power tools are for shit.
@rizzo297 Youre lucky then, there was a thread a while back where we discussed this issue and a lot of people have had the same experience at Sears, with the model number change. I could always get them to do it in the end, by asking for the store manager and threatening to close my account . . . after awhile it just got old. The last straw for me was a 14 year old after-school employee telling me not to break my tools and denying my replacement (no manager was available). The tool was still in the blister pack shelf wrap, it broke on the way home in the bag. That was the last straw for me. There was a time long ago when the guy that worked the tool counter at Sears had 30 years experience, knew every tool they ever made, and would make a point to know your name. Now I get that same level of service every time the Snap-on truck needs buzzed in at the gate.
@Pavlov At probably 10x the cost though (no i'm not debating if snap on is worth it, I have a snap on impact set as well as my everyday craftsman set. Maybe I have had good luck, but I've never had an issue. I usually just find the tool I want replaced and bring it to the register by the auto department.
@rizzo297 But don't forget @Pavlov is " Elitist and presumptuous? Absolutely. Don't forget judgmental and all around rich asshole." We are lucky he even graces us with his presence on this bargain bin shoppers site/forum.
@mehybe@rizzo297 I was being (somewhat) facetious in the "elitist" retort, but you are Goddamn right you're lucky I grace you with my presence. (Note the fun sarcasm, I'm not intentionally meaning to be a douche, unlike some others - I'm not naming any names, but one need not be a rocket scientist to figure it out [maybe?])
@Moose I contacted them to try to figure out why they are called Vermont american when they have nothing to do with vermont. They said it was a company merger.
@eyewerks meh. You'd have to live in vermont to see how the locals get about the usage of the word vermont in products/company names. I don't think many in this state know of the company. If they did I suspect it would be on the local news and we'd have some group suing them to change their name. Another group doing a study to see if the company has any negative impact to Vermont from this company. A third group about the environmental impact to the local Ecosystem from this company and a fourth one trying to use this company name to get marajuana legal using made up facts about this company.
Vermont is the only state that I know where when a mom and pop store wants to open they bend over backwards to try to open it. Yet if an established company tries to move in it has to have studies for years and public hearings/town meetings about it before they are given a permit to start the process.
@sohmageek 'Never been to Vermont - seems like a quaint enough place. But couldn't resist the Urban Dictionary top entry: Vermont: "Timmy: Why is it so windy here in Vermont? Becky: Because New Hampshire sucks and New York blows."
@sohmageek You must have been involved in trying to bring the Walmart to St. Albans. It was literally like 10 years of legal fights and numerous environmental impact studies before it was finally allowed to open.
@sohmageek Yeah, I don't shop at Walmart when I can avoid it, but I don't have the feelings of loathing that most progressives do. If people want to shop there, that's there perogative. I still can't understand why there isn't a target in the Burlington area. I live in Houston now, and I seem to make weekly trips to Target, even if I don't really need anything.
I already have some of these from a previous sale. I don't want to pay for an entire package of tools and get a bunch of duplicates for the few pieces that I would be missing. Oh well. Goodnight.
I got the last one... the feel apart fast.... meh. In fact I had to use it today to built a small table... maybe next time there well be something better... but not a beard trimmer.... please
yeah a lot of these individual packages you can buy at the dollar store. a allen set, a screwdriver with different attachments, that claw, ect, I guess I am trying to say no Thank You
If you guys are hellbent on selling tools, how about at least offering up some cool items. Take for instance those fiber optic cables that have a tiny camera and light source on one end and a 5" color video screen on the other. They claim they can be used to inspect inside of walls, and peek into all sorts of dark and hard to get to places. I suspect there are folks performing freelance colonoscopies with them. Harbor Freight often sells them for $85, but I bet you'd sell a boat load if you priced them at $14.
These are good enough for quick fixes (none of mine have fallen apart). They are a step up from what the dollar store (have had tools from there).
Purchase if:
- You have no other tools - You literally plan to just put together Ikea furniture and screw in loose screws around the house - You're going to do something simple but messy and don't want to ruin good tools
Don't purchase if: - You're planning on doing serious work - You have a million of tools like this already
Where's the price comparison? I know I can google it myself, however, at 12:30am it's much easier to just click on the link(s) usually provided by Meh... Want to know if these are good enough for kids going away to college or just starting off on their own....
@wildmomo Yea, I googled the retrieval set and found this: http://www.amazon.com/Vermont-American-012121-Retrieval-Mirror/dp/B00RW1D11KJust saying I always look at the price comparison links provided by Meh and they usually sway me one way or the other if I'm on the fence about buying something... From Amazon, the retrieval set is $20 alone, so maybe not such a bad deal even if that is the only thing interested in.... However, at this point I have spent way too much of my sleepy time looking into it and now I don't really want it anymore. Guess I'm asking Meh why no price comparison links????
Bought this myself, can confirm the mini screwdriver set is great, though not so much for things with small deep holes, like playstation controllers. For those you still need a long, thin eyeglass-style mini screwdriver.
The retrieval set is perfect for annoying your spouse.
@harrison how many pieces were mislabeled or broke within 24 hours of the plastic packaging removed. I ended up with 4 sets of the mini screw driver the large screw driver and the retrieval set. 3/4 of the mirrors weren't glued well and broke. 2 magnetic heads fell off and 3 of the mini screwdrivers have bits that are in the correct spot according to the label imprinted on the bit. But the imprint is the incorrect label for the bit.
I had a mini + normal driver set where various pieces have gone missing over time. This is a good multi-set, and sure it's not amazing compared with what you'd pay at a hardware store, but in one bundle shipped to your house this is a pretty good deal.
Edit: The dinosaur passed the fourth wall and made me buy it.
First purchase this month. So far VMP is a break-even for me... I'm a sucker for tools, cheap or not. Good to have the hex keys around, and needed a saw like this. Seems like a deal just to have all the extra bits.
Ah, Vermont American. Tools that have probably never been to Vermont and are not made in america. Not saying There aren't quality tools made in china, there certainly are, but these ain't it. I'm all about being frugal in most things but cheap tools are a waste of time. You're better off getting a cheap but good quality multi bit screw driver with your 12 bucks. way more useful than this heap of junk.
I've made the mistake of purchasing Vermont American cra- er, items in the past. They've all broken within the first few uses. The most memorable was the countersink drill bit that snapped off in an oak cabinet face...I ended up having to just sand the jagged end down and cover it with wood filler. Then I bought a set of DeWalt countersinks so I could actually finish the job.
There was also the jigsaw blade that snapped mid-cut, and the poorly-made convex-edge router bit that left rough, splintery sadness in its wake.
Bought 3 of them.... when someone who never returns things asks to "Borrow" a tool I'll give them these, they will probably stop asking to "Borrow" things afterwards
Arrived yesterday. Haven't used them yet, but they appear perfectly serviceable. I'm please overall. Nice to have extra bits and the extended screwdriver set is pretty handy as well.
Just got to opening these as I was cleaning out my garage today and getting organized. Wow, these are some shitty tools. The hex keys are the worst. The don't lock in place in any way and just kinda flop around. I can't even understand how these are supposed to be used to any effective measure. The saw seems like a one-time use variety. The retrieval set was "extra jumpy" as I released the zip ties holding the spring it a loop for packaging. I could have used eye protection* for that alone.

@mrshl Do you have video of the stairwell rescue?
Would have probably gone viral . . . just sayin'.
@Superjimtendo you needed one screwdriver and you bought a giant set of shitty tools instead. That's not a good deal, that's just you being silly.
@mrshl Oh, and the shuttles are retired . . . Now had you said the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) spacecraft, well, hell - I'd have agreed.
@mrshl so sad to inform you Craftsman tools have been crap (perhaps not quite this crappy) for at least 10-15 years. But otherwise your point is valid. For some scenarios, cheap, disposable tools have a purpose.

@flynnski Hey, you'll put your eye out with that cheap screwdriver, kid.
@Pavlov That's odd...everytime I have exchanged something craftsman and they didnt carry the model anymore I got the current gen version.
@rizzo297 Youre lucky then, there was a thread a while back where we discussed this issue and a lot of people have had the same experience at Sears, with the model number change. @mehybe That's okay, I really am an asshole . . . HA
Who's the Meh'est of them all? Vermont American Tool!
Actually....its the meh'est tool...
These look great for fixing my eyeglasses, but how about some tools for wood carving? Women love wood carvings.
@jjohns71 Women love wood.
Vermont American
Made in China
wat
@TheDuke Also not located in Vermont.
@TheDuke An American werewolf in Vermont, China.
@Moose I contacted them to try to figure out why they are called Vermont american when they have nothing to do with vermont. They said it was a company merger.
@sohmageek You have WAY too much time on your hands.

@sohmageek You must have been involved in trying to bring the Walmart to St. Albans. It was literally like 10 years of legal fights and numerous environmental impact studies before it was finally allowed to open.
@jhudiddy08 No, Not at all... I'd love to see a Target... and maybe an Arby's. I really don't like Walmart.

@cengland0 I agree. I need tools as my entire toolbox was stolen when I moved. But not duplicates.
Too bad these aren't Vermont Canadian tools.
meh. why the hell not?
tall-level-thief
@VeeDubTDI ... Now why don't they have something like THAT for sale? I'd definitely buy her for a dollar!!
@unkabob I keep talking about the adult toy department, but no one listens.
@VeeDubTDI Amazing.
@GeriatricDragon ... Maybe a 'lil wall stree, uh.. Meh protest..?
@VeeDubTDI Conan FTW
@VeeDubTDI nowadays she would have levitating silicone on her chest....the good ole days!
I guess these are the tool version of speaker docks.
Vermont American...
...Made in China
Bought the saw/hex/precision set last time . So I don't need anymore
I got the last one... the feel apart fast.... meh. In fact I had to use it today to built a small table... maybe next time there well be something better... but not a beard trimmer.... please
@Squid_07 ... Beard trimmers need love too ya' know..
Seriously? This crap is 2 for $1 at the dollar store.
....although instead of Vermont, the shit is labeled China and India.
This is like shopping for tools in the Walgreen pharmacy isles. PASS!!!!!
@Stallion aisles*. Women also love proper grammar.
@jjohns71 wait, you've never vacationed in the Walmart Pharmacy Isles?! We took a J Cruise there last spring and it was lovely.
@jjohns71 Lol, i'll blame it on autocorrect and the fact that I was doing wishes with wet hands while I typed that, lol.
@Stallion Don't you realize wishes are more likely to be granted with dry hands?
Sell the retrieval set alone. That would be fantastic!
Seems one of the good deals among recent mehs. I wish I needed these.
Bunch a tools. Screw it, let's get hammered!
@MehAmphetamine ...
@armchair Mi ĵuras al Dio ke estas esperanto!
nope, bought it last time and now im dissappointed so disapointed i have no care for fixing the word
Almost tempted for the retrieval tools alone...and maybe the hex keys since they seem to go missing a lot...but, nah, I'll pass
No thank you these tools are really cheap. Not even worth it for that price
yeah a lot of these individual packages you can buy at the dollar store. a allen set, a screwdriver with different attachments, that claw, ect, I guess I am trying to say no Thank You
If you guys are hellbent on selling tools, how about at least offering up some cool items.
@eyewerks ... I'd buy a couple..
@unkabob Let me guess, .....wannabe proctologist?
@eyewerks ... Bingo!!
@eyewerks I'm sure wannabe David Cronenbergs could have fun with this set, too.
@eyewerks Wholesale on those is right around $15, not sure they could get the price that low
@rizzo297 Wholesale? Huh? I thought Meh acquired inventory by hijacking trucks and through connections with customs officials at the airport.
These are good enough for quick fixes (none of mine have fallen apart). They are a step up from what the dollar store (have had tools from there).
Purchase if:
- You have no other tools
- You literally plan to just put together Ikea furniture and screw in loose screws around the house

@PocketBrain My thoughts exactly. Perfect for keeping in the desk at the office.

@wildmomo harbor freight? http://t.harborfreight.com/2-pc-sae-metric-folding-hex-key-set-62162.html
I might consider this a deal if the set came with dinosaurs to display them since these aren't good as actual tools.
@TheTexasTwister is that a prehistoric Hank Harland?
Bought this myself, can confirm the mini screwdriver set is great, though not so much for things with small deep holes, like playstation controllers. For those you still need a long, thin eyeglass-style mini screwdriver.
The retrieval set is perfect for annoying your spouse.
@harrison how many pieces were mislabeled or broke within 24 hours of the plastic packaging removed. this reminds me of recent meh.com deals one after the other (save 4)
@unixrab this reminds you of self-spawning toothpaste? Weird.
@Superjimtendo um...no. to quote myself:
"16 screwing options"
2 hrs and 19 mins and no one caught this?
@sublimosa Phrasing!
First purchase this month. So far VMP is a break-even for me...
I'm a sucker for tools, cheap or not. Good to have the hex keys around, and needed a saw like this. Seems like a deal just to have all the extra bits.

Love you MEH, but I'm serious about tools :)
The tool snobbery is over 9,000!

These are the tools you lend out to coworkers or neighbors so they don't steal... err... "forget to return" your good tools.
The bonus of this is that these tools are so crappy that they'll probably find someone else to borrow from next time.
Bought 3 of them.... when someone who never returns things asks to "Borrow" a tool I'll give them these, they will probably stop asking to "Borrow" things afterwards
We are apparently looking at the meh face in a mirror.
Clever upside down Vermont Amercian logo in the Meh face.
I suppose V-A would consider that fair use in the marketing of its products.
Because I can't find my 5mm hex key.
Bought the last set of these and two of the heads broke after first use. Possibly the cheapest metal i've ever seen.
hey, this is a repeat! meh'ed heartily. no reposts, meh.
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
Home owners? I didn't think baby boomers use this site.
This is a nice set and last time I got two sets. And you shipped me 4 sets by accident. So I don't need anymore. But they are definitely worth the $$.
@larry they did that to you too Larry? I had ordered exactly 2 and got 4 also
@larry was it a tuesday?
Arrived yesterday. Haven't used them yet, but they appear perfectly serviceable. I'm please overall. Nice to have extra bits and the extended screwdriver set is pretty handy as well.
Bits keep falling out of my precision set. Handle doesn't hold them in at all. Absolutely useless.
Just got to opening these as I was cleaning out my garage today and getting organized. Wow, these are some shitty tools. The hex keys are the worst. The retrieval set was "extra jumpy" as I released the zip ties holding the spring it a loop for packaging. I could have used eye protection* for that alone.
*eye protection not included.
