@MehnofLaMehncha well, in the old days it should have been called pokescreen because it would only recognize pokes. It actually is a touchscreen now, since it recognizes the capacitance in your fingers.
@Kidsandliz Minecraft, unlike 95% of video games, computes its graphics in the CPU rather than the GPU. So shit tier laptops can run it and that's part of the reason it sold so well.
@ethansight@andrewpatrick I can actually run Minecraft pretty decently on my Win10 tablet that has an Atom processor (Z3735F) and only 2 GB of RAM. Tried Just Cause 2 a while back and it was almost playable.
@march5th00 you might have liked what we picked up over the Christmas holidays - our local Microsoft Store kept getting the following in droves: Dell, i5, 8GB, 1TB, 15.6" 1080 x 1920 HD touch screen, BT, backlit KB, no crapware, $399
@eeterrific Yeah, that was the last place I looked, unfortunately. Could have saved myself the Google. I don't know why they refuse to list full specs on the main site. Probably for reasons like this, I guess, when they're stealthily selling something that's UTTER BULLSHIT.
The model # is usually a pretty good way to tell though - just goog it up or punch it into something like https://cpubenchmark.net and it should spit out some good benchmarks.
@Chops Oh God, just when I thought I finally had it all figured out! I'll never get those computer upgrades I've been wanting for years! It's just too fudging complicated!
@Dizavid I so appreciate your post. Thank YOU! If I may ask, where can I find help(for their* special needs lol( ;) on getting a great deal for the needs of my *mom and dad, I would like to get them both one. I was about to buy 2 of these. I like Toshiba. I know the problems with their W adapters and a few other glitches(how to fix easily) . I am so confused? When I go to a store, no deals and their knowledge is spotty. Thank you either way( =
@MarkieK I'd wait around on Slickdeals.net until you find sleuthing around the same price with 1080p and at least like a 2.2 GHz i5 processor or something like that. Here's an existing Slick Deal that's already better than this one. It's not 1080p, but it's got significantly better RAM and processor for not much more money. http://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/190578
I am seriously baffled that anything below 1080p is still being sold above bargain basement prices. 1080p is starting to become unimpressive these days. 1440p is the new 1080p.
I don't have this one, but after having a great run with my old Toshiba R705 I bought a higher end Toshiba Radius 12.5 recently and it has been utter crap. The track pad glitches, the fan rattles and the wifi died completely. That has all been within 5 months of ownership.
@ruouttaurmind luckily I'd only be going 1080p, not 4K :) Or more accurately my GF would, but the more I look at this I don't think I would wish this upon her, she deserves better lol
@Stormchaser 1366x768 isn't awful. It used to be (still is? idk) a fairly standard laptop resolution. Recently 1600x900 has been pretty popular followed by 1080p. But it is only a 14" screen, so 1366x768 shouldn't be the worst thing ever.
I think 1366x768 @ 14" is actually a higher PPI than 1080p at a standard 22" size screen.
For anyone who's like me and has to know the specific processor in a "Intel i-whatever" laptop, it seems this one has a i3-5015U. PassMark score of 3162 which puts it in the low-mid range overall, and more towards the top of the $300 laptop offerings.
For comparison, all those $150-$250 non-touch laptops you see on sale everywhere typically rate a PassMark score around 1700-2500. The cheaper ones (old $100 refurbs or the Intel Baytrail systems) fall between 1000-1800 PassMark scores. The 10 year old Dell I'm typing on now has a Duo T2050 which scores a solid 959 on the PassMark scale.
@ruouttaurmind Oh, and PS: Note there is no CD/DVD drive in this one. You'll have to use an external if that's something you care about. External DVD-RW drives easily had for $20-30.
@ruouttaurmind You have to be careful, though. I had to buy a wall powered USB hub to get my external disk drive to stop crapping out on me because i was doing LAME encoding straight from the disk. Oddly, the only program that didn't make my cd drive fail was iTunes.
@ruouttaurmind Speaking of PassMark scores, I've seen refurb HP ProBook w/ i5-3320M (scores nearly 4000), similar screen & 1yr warranty for < $300. It was at (gulp) woot.computers not that long ago. Was considering it for egpu project I was contemplating
@compunaut Most Woot deals sour (for me) once the 10% sales tax is added. A good deal on a $300 computer suddenly becomes an average deal on a $330 computer. Well, $335 once you add shipping at Woot (too bad they don't add Woot shipping as a Prime benefit).
If it doesn't make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs, then it's what Luke said. Refurb and that hard drive; ouch, it hurts just thinking about rpms.
@j8048188 Yep,I don't understand those other specs. but resolution I get. The Samsung tab. I'm using right now is 2560×1600. I'm on my 4th tab. and the 1st 2 were like looking through cheesecloth. Love this resolution and no refurbs. for me.
Touchscreens on laptops are about as useful as a third nipple. And yeah, it might be able to load Steam and Photoshop (Elements, that is - let's be real here), but it won't get you very far in either with an i3 and 6GB RAM. $300 Don't Starve or Minecraft machine, I guess? You can find better (i5, 8GB RAM, SSD), non-touchscreen refurbs for the about same price (+/- $50) just searching on Google.
Don't be fooled by touchscreen price inflation. It's an unstable market. Instead, invest in my commemorative Glenn Beck/Abraham Lincoln-Bearded Bald Eagle 100% gold-plated coins at just $399.99 for a set of 40. They'll hold their value and help you survive the coming financial apocalypse, which you can read about in my ebook, The Coming Financial Apocalypse: How To Survive It (available for a limited-time discount of just $50).
@harveydanger Speak for yourself, dawg. I actually hacked my laptop and mounted a hard polyurethane surface over the keyboard to use as a cupholder/small desk, because I just don't use the keyboard or touchpad at all. Touchscreen only FOR LIFE.
I'm just kidding, that's totally a lie, I never use my touchscreen.
The specs on an i3 are a wash for me but, mama dukes been using the 'old broken laptop connected to a monitor' rig since the great water spill of last week. Since she only uses it for email, kodi, yt and facebook, this may have a chance. Plus, she has been dropping hints about wanting a touchscreen since she gave her tablet to my lil sis. I mainly fear the potential "it's freezing" phone calls But I think She'll come out alright. I'm in for one.
Nice seeing the person in charge of buying take a risk and try to sell something other than $3 speakers or $4 coffee mugs but hey there fella (or gal) THIS IS NOT A DEAL! Personally I would love to see some high end tech on this site ate a good buy it now price but this is not it. Maybe someone sold it to you telling you how well they would sell, don't buy from them anymore, they lied.
@JimSwaz Pretty sure the meh guys have been reselling tech for a long time. Personal computer sales are falling--Intel is getting out of the consumer-level chip making.
@therealjrn and going where? The premium they extract on servers is disappearing as well. With consolidation of new buying at Amazon, Microsoft, Google, maybe Facebook who have enough decent engineers among them with spare time they cook up a new processor architecture just to get a discount from Intel on its server processors.
@therealjrn thank you much for the intelligent reply. No sarcasm implied. 2am my time and my usual verbal filter was on break so I was not sure how that would come across. As laptops go this is a real piece of poop though. I am agree the computer market has all but crumbles since the tablets have taken over. 90% of all laptops use the HP label and they are broad anchers for sure. Still for a "DEAL" site I do expect a better offering. I am an original Wooter, now a faithful Meh'er till they sell out. For $300 I want high res screen, upgradable memory and NOT a HP.
@therealjrn Intel firing over 12K employees. We have a Intel plant here and everyone is freaking out! The ground below and around the plant is so contaminated from all the chip making residue that they will continue to maintain the facilities with a skeleton crew but not produce any product. The clean-up costs would involve removing all of the soil around and under the facilities and moving it to a toxic waste dump. $$$$ cheaper to keep the plant "running"
@accelerator Wow. I had no idea chip making was so messy. I guess I just pictured everybody in clean rooms--very sterile. That sounds like some of our Oklahoma oil industry clean-up sites!
So I googled it, 1366x768 at 14" is a higher PPI than 1080p at 22" (A fairly standard monitor size).
So shoutout to everyone complaining about the resolution.
In case you don't understand PPI, basically it's the amount of detail crammed into an inch. Your iPhone (unless it's a plus model) has one around 330 (I forget the exact number). 4K @ 28" (a good size monitor for 4k) is 157 PPI. (1080 @ 22" is 100, and this laptop is 110)
So in closing, the resolution on this laptop will look nicer than the resolution on your 22" 1080p monitor, even if it's not. It's not the be all and end all, but it does make it a pretty moot complaint.
It's probably one of the last complaints I'd have about this laptop honestly. Unless I messed up the math or numbers somewhere.
@Nexar Your calculations are right, but you left out a variable: your eyes' distance from the screen. Your eyes are usually farther from a television than from a laptop, so lower ppi on the tv is fine. Your typically hold a phone closer to your eyes so you want a higher ppi on your phone than on a laptop.
For some folks, the resolution on this laptop will be fine, but for many uses it just doesn't show enough pixels on the screen.
@Nexar agreed to a point. Some folks get a bit spec-whorish on screen resolution since other factors can make a screen beautiful or not.
Not that it is fair to do side by side comparisons since that is not real world, but the difference between this screen and a 1080 x 1920 screen is very clear at 14" display size.
In defense of a desire for higher pixel density on this notebook - it can be used tablet-style due to that hinge.
Regardless of whether the $300 is high, that higher pixel density display would likely add another $75-100 at retail.
@LordFluffy Although the CPU and RAM are adequate, the integrated graphics would have a heart attack. You need a dedicated GPU to run Skyrim in any appreciable manner.
This isn't that bad if you swap out the HDD for an SDD :) Sure, it's an i3 and the screen is 720p, but it's $300. All depends on what you're using it for.
Honestly I'm excited about this purchase. After my desktop crashed I've been using a chrome book. Can't wait to get the full advantages of a computer! I need it for photos and streaming so its perfect Bravo Meh, Bravo
Funnily enough I'm visiting Meh today on a 10" Windows 10 tablet (with magnetically attached keyboard) that cost $200. Personally I'm pretty tired of the Chromebooks since I have no use for one, but I'd love to see more stuff like this on here.
I can't really justify buying this since I already have a desktop, a laptop, and two tablets, but for the right price I might be pretty tempted to buy another tablet with a keyboard since I like them so much.
But.... Toshiba? It could be $30 and I wouldn't want it. My last Toshiba literally cracked itself to death on the hinge and had so much bloat ware that it was easier to buy an Asus Zenbook instead and use the Toshiba drive as an external USB drive instead.
@Marion14505 I have an old toshiba laptop running some home automation 24/7... I'll look up the model and year next time I am around it... anyway like all brands there are good and bad units.
I also have never had a bad Asus product, but I have heard horror stories. (just to be clear I am a big asus fan)

Doesn't Compute -- well it does
@AttyVette
Can't touch this deal.
I'm screening my deals.
Will Meh take a refurbished NSF check for payment?
Decisions, decisions....
I like how they don't trust it to last more than 3 months. Really instills confidence.
That's a great price for the specs. However, I don't expect to buy anything 300ish on Meh
1366x768 should not exist anymore. Would buy if it was at least 1600x900.
@JustinWG such a bad resolution. might as well buy a tablet
Always wondered why "touchscreen" became the commonly used phrase instead of "pokescreen."
@MehnofLaMehncha "touchscreen" is a family friendly term. "Pokescreen" is a porn friendly term.
@MehnofLaMehncha well, in the old days it should have been called pokescreen because it would only recognize pokes. It actually is a touchscreen now, since it recognizes the capacitance in your fingers.
Six gigs of ram with an i3? I mean... you could probably run Minecraft just fine
@ethansight The reviews on Amazon said only on some low setting (don't play that so have no idea what they are talking about).
@Kidsandliz Minecraft, unlike 95% of video games, computes its graphics in the CPU rather than the GPU. So shit tier laptops can run it and that's part of the reason it sold so well.
@ethansight @andrewpatrick I can actually run Minecraft pretty decently on my Win10 tablet that has an Atom processor (Z3735F) and only 2 GB of RAM. Tried Just Cause 2 a while back and it was almost playable.
I don't use the laptop I have.
meh.
@mamawoot as a plus point, this laptop is thick and heavy so you won't throw it out with your old magazines
http://www.wired.com/2008/03/newsweek-report/
In the market for a cheap computer but my two main requirements - an i5 or better and a full HD screen - are unfortunately not met here.
@march5th00 you might have liked what we picked up over the Christmas holidays - our local Microsoft Store kept getting the following in droves:
Dell, i5, 8GB, 1TB, 15.6" 1080 x 1920 HD touch screen, BT, backlit KB, no crapware, $399
@RedOak yeah that would be perfect actually. Their Signature Series is a nice bonus. Send me yours and I'll send you a really nice Refurb Toshiba i3!
Just an ammendment to be fair - this i3 performs as well as some 4th gen i5s.
Battery 8.12 hours? Could only go to the hundredths? Someone slide a pizza under the test team's door and tell them to get back to work.
You know it's shit when it doesn't list the GHz of the processor anywhere and you have to Google it. (2.1, by the way, not good at all.)
It also ain't even 1080p. Piece of shit. You can do better just about any day on Slickdeals. Meh'd to hell.
@Dizavid ummmm...right at the top of the specs....2.1
@Dizavid 5th gen i3... It's not what you'd want to see...
@eeterrific Yeah, that was the last place I looked, unfortunately. Could have saved myself the Google. I don't know why they refuse to list full specs on the main site. Probably for reasons like this, I guess, when they're stealthily selling something that's UTTER BULLSHIT.
@Dizavid You can't really tell much by GHz these days, architecture some other doodaddy variables make a huge impact. One of Intels new-ish core M's runs @ 0.80GHz lol
The model # is usually a pretty good way to tell though - just goog it up or punch it into something like https://cpubenchmark.net and it should spit out some good benchmarks.
It looks like this one is the i3-5015u for anybody who cares. Actually d̶e̶c̶e̶n̶t̶ ok benchmarks, but I still wouldn't get the laptop lol
@Chops Oh God, just when I thought I finally had it all figured out! I'll never get those computer upgrades I've been wanting for years! It's just too fudging complicated!
@Dizavid I so appreciate your post. Thank YOU! @Dizavid THANX a million, you r right about the 1080p. Will keep an eye on slickdeals!( ; Acer has been stepping up....great deal.
I don't have this one, but after having a great run with my old Toshiba R705 I bought a higher end Toshiba Radius 12.5 recently and it has been utter crap. The track pad glitches, the fan rattles and the wifi died completely. That has all been within 5 months of ownership.
1366x768? Well that puts this squarely in the "turn it on, hook it to the TV for FULL 1080P, and use wireless mouse/kb" territory...
Of course whenever you're not near a full HD TV you're going to be cursing that resolution every second you're on the laptop too.
@Stormchaser Specs say it has 4K HDMI out, but with the i3 I'm not sure how smooth the video performance would be at that resolution.
@ruouttaurmind luckily I'd only be going 1080p, not 4K :) Or more accurately my GF would, but the more I look at this I don't think I would wish this upon her, she deserves better lol

Like: Thin, fun hinge-thing, USB 3.0 ports, $300
Dislike: Only 6GB RAM, i3, not as good as my current laptop that I bought 3 years ago
Meh.
@cpierce I'm with you.
Like the touchy-feely screen and the tablet-esque hinge. Thin, and moderately light. Bluetooth, USB 3 a plus.
I can live with the i3
Don't love the 6GB RAM or the non-SSD hard drive. I'll have to add another $110 to the price for a 480GB SSD.
@ruouttaurmind And if I'm gonna do that, I might as well just buy the SSD and more RAM for my current laptop!
For anyone who's like me and has to know the specific processor in a "Intel i-whatever" laptop, it seems this one has a i3-5015U. PassMark score of 3162 which puts it in the low-mid range overall, and more towards the top of the $300 laptop offerings.

Can anyone tell me if this machine is linux friendly?
@azndante "This machine is Linux friendly."
I said it but I don't actually know.
That broken-back hinge is the only realistic way to make that touch screen on a Windows 10 "laptop"/notebook/whatever useful... a la tablet-like.
"Runs Windows 10, which has to be worth $100 to somebody" Um, no.
@JustKen As opposed to chrome os, not compared to Windows 8.
That TERRIBLE resolution is literally a deal breaker.
@j8048188 Yep,I don't understand those other specs. but resolution I get. The Samsung tab. I'm using right now is 2560×1600. I'm on my 4th tab. and the 1st 2 were like looking through cheesecloth. Love this resolution and no refurbs. for me.
Amazon has it for $449...

Meh sucks dick.
Die in a fire you stupid jerks.
@kdyzol not much goes so far around here to deserve getting deleted. But that one falls to the level.
@RedOak ... Not easy to overlook dip-wads as they spew irrelevant kaa-kaa because of their pathetic condition.
@RedOak we've enjoyed the inspiration so much we can't delete it now.

@Nexar have you ever looked at a screen with that resolution?
@Nexar PPI doesn't matter when your application window will not fit on a 1366x768 screen.
"We sold 25 of these 2507 clicked meh" Oh make that 2508, I forgot to click it.
@growyoungagain Oh shoot. Make it 2509
Meh....more like Bleh
300 bucks huh? A little pricey for a refurb.......but I like the touchscreen aspect.
Gross screen and gross spinning disk.
1366x768 is NOT an HD screen! It's a barely-acceptable screen.
This is a perfect gift for my grandma or nephew who would be blown away by any computer and could care less about screen res and specs.
If it's 400ish new why would I pay 300 refurb? it's not even HD.
My question is this: Will it run Skyrim? How well? With how many mods?
@LordFluffy Although the CPU and RAM are adequate, the integrated graphics would have a heart attack. You need a dedicated GPU to run Skyrim in any appreciable manner.
@LordFluffy the i3 graphics are pretty good. You could run it , but would have to tune it.
Specs worth the price except I have sworn off Windows 10. My next laptop will be a Mac even though I have not used a Mac since the early 80's.
It gets a meh for a spinning drive. Honestly a 64 GB ssd and this would be a winner.
Mehbe at $99
@thismyusername Still overpriced for that shitty display.
But....
@thismyusername Love my new Zenbook. Never liked Toshiba. Loved all my ThinkPads.
Just got my refurbished meh Toshiba and I got to say; I'm loving it. There are no scratches or physical defects. Good Meh....
