@Pony
It looks like an awesome backpack/cooler, im trying to think of something I could use it for bc it’s pretty cool. That’s the perfect kind of place to take it. My best friends husband loves to fish I’m gonna show her.
You won’t be able to hike for long wearing this. ALL the weight will be on your shoulders and you will end up with a back ache and struggle with how heavy it feels.
A hip belt transfers the weight to your hips, you can stand up straighter and you would have very little weight pulling on your shoulders.
How do I know this?I worked for Outward Bound and other adventure programs in 6 countries. In the UK they used backpacks with no hip belts and it was agony. They finally allowed me to use my own (which had a hip belt) and it was much, much better. I felt sorry for the students.
Going from your car to a near by camping spot this won’t be an issue. Walk a mile or more and it better be 20 pounds or less. Think about when you have big time overstuffed a book backpack with too much stuff. Then think about what that would feel like when much heavier and walking a distance.
Yes you can probably buy a replacement hip belt for a backpack and jury rig it on but that is going to add to your cost and time, and what you buy may or may not be able to be jury rigged as you have to be really careful where you sew (using a sailboat sail needle - curved and thick and likely sailboat repair thread which is very strong and thick - you will also need a palm to protect your hand to push the needle through) as a hole in the wrong place and you will have a leaking cooler backpack.
@Kidsandliz
The upside? It will weigh much less on the hike out than in. I once went hiking/camping with a three liter bag-in-box wine bag. Seemed like a good idea at the time, no weight from glass bottles, but the hike in was 5.5 miles uphill.
In the morning we ended up washing dishes with wine just so we didn’t need to pack it out.
/showme sam porter bridges on foot evading enemies while delivering dominos pizza to a woman using a futuristic folding umbrella as a bong, style of death stranding.
@caseyh can confirm if you remove the vault, the cooler backpack will fit 24 cans. I actually fit 25, left on my counter with no ice but fully zipped for 6 hours, and cans were still same temp as when they came out of the fridge. I used Poppi instead of beer though
I’m not sure if this is a dumb product or just bad messaging. Is this just a cooler with backpack straps? Or is it a backpack that somehow also has some cooler functionality. If it’s just a cooler where’re the spec on how good it is, etc. etc. etc. Solid direct-to-Meh product, but possibly just because they don’t know how to explain the product to possible buyers (and, for $225 you’re better be very clear on that)
@ergomeh The thing that confuses me if the homage to the Outer Limits tv show. It’s cute, but I don’t think of the majority of hikers as being Outer Limits fans.
Now I wonder if there is a twilight hiker zone brand out there.
@cfg83 although the serious hiker is probably not the one who is going to lug in a 24 pack and so presumably not the target (also no hip belt). Seems more a for a vehicle-based application so maybe some fans…
@cfg83 OK, since you didn’t ask:
Why do ducks have webbed feet?
So that they can stomp out forest fires.
Why do elephants have flat feet?
So they can jump out of trees and put out burning ducks.
Why do all the animals leave the jungle at 5pm?
To get out of the way of falling elephants.
Why do crocodiles have flat heads?
Because they didn’t leave the jungle (or because they were carrying Outter Limits VaultPack Coolers on their heads)
@ergomeh fair question and frankly, probably how the inventory ended up with us in the first place. The build quality for the cooler backpack portion is very similar to These Coho Coolers we sold back in 2023 but these Outter Limits have backpack straps. I comfortably fit 24 cans with no vault. The key differentiator is the included vault and its customizable sections created by small pieces of plastic to create shelves and compartments inside the vault so things like chips and sandwiches don’t get crushed. You can fully remove all of the plastic pieces in the vault to open up more space. The only caveat is that the vault takes up the entire cavity of the cooler backpack and does limit how much you can fit, even after removing the dividers. YMMV but in the vault, I comfortably fit in 8 cans on the bottom portion and on the top I fit 2 ice packs, 3 unopened snack bags and 3 Ollie’s dog food packets (this is what I had available, don’t judge). I personally really like the idea of bringing this to the beach since you can use the vault as a chair to sit on. Attaching some photos of the vault, please note I have a sample of the red version, but we are selling the black. Finally, as always, I’m biased as I work at Stores.com and I was the buyer on this deal.
@mandirose So, cooler with backpack straps and handy organizer. Good for the park/beach or to throw in the car for a trip. At $40 it’s a deal ($225, maybe not so much). And now I might have a use-case because lugging an igloo cooler into a hotel on a multi-day car trip is annoying, whereas this is actually portable.
/showme Ducks stomping out forest fires while running away from elephants jumping out of trees trying to step on the ducks while alligators flattened by elephants are in the background. The jungle clock says 5:01 PM.
@ergomeh couldn’t have said it better myself. I frequently take 10+ hour road trips and plan on taking this with me now vs other coolers I have. I’m biased as I said but I think this is a great deal at $40 and feel pretty confident our customers will feel the same once they see the build quality. Wish I had the exact specs you were looking for but hope this helped.
@zippyus yep. You could definitely keep tools and nuts and bolts in it. Personally I’d probably remove the vault pack and use that on its own to keep tools and such in so that I could then use the cooler backpack for anything I needed to keep cold.
Do I need this? NO
Do I want this? YES
Will I have to explain to my wife why I bought another backpack and explain how cool it looks? Oh yeah, that’s a definite YES
Really impressed with the cooler. Just got mine and it will become my default travel cooler. The slim design means it will take up less space (more room for luggage), when I drive out of town. I was surprised by the multiple compartments and configurations, because the website description doesn’t do it justice. For only $40, it’s worth the buy.
I will use the bag to haul beers to shares or to the beach. The vault is way over-engineered and I doubt I’ll use that at all. No way it’s worth $300 or whatever they claimed. But at $40, it seems like a decent pricepoint for what I intend to use it for.

@mediocrebot @zippyus Oh, what a difference one word makes!
Your comp is $225 on Kickstarter, but looking at the campaign you linked, they sold exactly zero of these backpacks at that price.
They sold 11 at the “early bird” price of $175, but with just 21 backers total, none of it really feels like a serious sales point.
Better comp is probably the $80 this went for on Woot.
@denton Manufacturer website at $215 with 2 icepacks (instead of 4 here).
Website is spotty – started going offline yesterday (I wonder why
)
But yes you’re right, Woot recently sold this for $79.99.
My husband will love this for when he goes fishing in areas he has to hike into.

This is fun. With kid sports season upon us this is timely. Chair plus snacks and drinks… In one?!
That’s over 25lbs between the cooler and 24 cans, plus whatever the bag weighs.
@mcanavino OK…?
@mcanavino @ohhwell It means it is heavy and may well make your shoulders and back hurt carrying it with no hip belt.
These have a huge design flaw. NO HIP BELT!!!
You won’t be able to hike for long wearing this. ALL the weight will be on your shoulders and you will end up with a back ache and struggle with how heavy it feels.

Nice idea, poorly designed.

@mandirose any sense for how well this would work as a small road case / organizer for tools and such? are the vault walls somewhat sturdy?
@cfg83 @mediocrebot Close, but the clock is a minute fast.
@mediocrebot @rpstrong That is my fault. I always set clocks to be a wee bit faster so I can … NEVER BE LATE!!!
@zippyus yep. You could definitely keep tools and nuts and bolts in it. Personally I’d probably remove the vault pack and use that on its own to keep tools and such in so that I could then use the cooler backpack for anything I needed to keep cold.

@alsalazar @mandirose I went looking but failed to find,
.
@alsalazar @mandirose comes with the 4 ice packs. It’s a good deal at $40 bucks. The ice packs are small designed to fit the spaces inside the vault.
Ohhh, so it’s a lunchbox inside of a backpack?! Cool! …i think.
I really liked it, but the zipper broke the 1st time I used it. I’d love for Meh to send me a replacement (I’ve reached out to customer service).

Pretty heavy for hiking… Bag feels nice, not 100% sure im sold on the weird plastic box… Seems over engineered. Maybe just use it without.
