@DMlivezey It is literally keeping me up at night. The last one I missed was at about 200-something in a row and the sale was for a stupid radar detector. I spent a week sulking. Gotta chase that dragon, though.
@TRD 254 was my highest, now i vow to never click Meh. more than once a month - so liberating , I used to stay up to midnight in hopes a Fuku was coming and lost too much sleep - free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty I'm free at last!
Thank you meh. Appreciate the explanation. I'm one of those individual customers and really appreciate the outstanding customer service you strive for!!
Agreed on the N2840 killing the deal (that and only 16GB of eMMC). If they compete with the other place and go below $269 for a ThinkPad 11e (Windows not Chromebook), I might have to pick up a second.
@akumax ok, 'cause I was going to ask, what's a matter with this? It looks beautiful! and nice resolution. But if you're picking, that's what's wrong, eh? ok.
@akumax yeah. worked fine. You're a good linker dinker. I see what people are meaning. Not fast enough for my sooper-secret MIT number crunching, but will handle the gossip sites just fine. I have an old disco ball netgear router,-that's probably not helping my speed much either?
@wew the other [+] is that a lot of the chromebooks with a 'full' intel processor can be 'hacked' to install Win10 on it. can't do it with these SoC procs.
@wew not sure what you mean by 'slow things down'. it's an actual install of Windows 10. the important thing is that the IPC and GFX on these Core-series CPUs are much more efficient/powerful than the SoC CPUs. I mean, just look at how 'slow' the 1.5GHz 3205U is compared to the 2.5GHz N2840. there's a collection of 'approved' Chromebooks (most with 2955U or 3205U CPUs) that are Win10-installable.
@wew the chromebook is still x86 hardware. there is no slowdown as long as there are drivers that are written/available for Win10 (especially for stuff like speedstep/sleep/gfx/power mgmt/etc...). there are some things that are cheap/specific to ChromeOS (where they didn't have to write drivers for Win7/8/10). note that practically all chromebooks can run chrubuntu (since the linux drivers are easily accessible).
we're looking for the chromebooks that overlap w/ the exact hardware as the Win versions. I know that Acer and Samsung have made the same exact notebook, with one where they installed ChromeOS (and just called it a chromebook) and another with Win8/10 (and charged +$100 for MS license). Those are candidates for re-flashing the chromebook to working with Win10.
GO TO $99 THEN YOU WILL SELL OUT AGAIN. I WOULD BE IN FOR 2. I NEED THESE FOR ME AND THE WIFE WHEN WE TRAVEL OVERSEAS. PLUG IN A USB MICRO 128GB TO THE USB 3.0 AND IT SAVES ALL MY PICS & VIDEO. SNAP, BOOM, BANG - POW!!!
BUT. . . . ME AND THE WIFE HAD TO HIT THE DREADED "MEH" BUTTON YET AGAIN
Dug out my old chromebook last week. Enabled developer mode, added Linux (dual boot) then added Kodi. Made a sweet media device to either watch on screen or HDMI out to TV. Mine has lower specs than this one.
"But it could be worse. We could be a third-party Amazon reseller."
Now, that shit right there; that's funny. That's why I love you guys. In my fantasy world, Rutledge told Amazon to stuff it, walked away with his millions, waited for his non-compete to expire, and then got rolling on meh so he could do it all again.
Now that THAT'S out of the way, this deal is...meh.
I have a 15" laptop, an 8" tablet, and a 5" phone, and the tablet really doesn't see much use. I don't really get the need for these, I use the laptop for real work and the phone/tablet for fun. So...meh
@cpierce I got one of these guys last time. Definitely better than my work-issued laptop: longer battery life, lighter, and the processor is fine for my purposes (word processing and web browsing).
The best thing is that I can use the Chromebook to access my home and work desktops remotely... so I can still use Microsoft Word and all of the normal things. But that is definitely reliant on Internet access, which is a deal-breaker for a lot of people. I just haven't found it to be an issue yet.
Have 1 already, I use it when I am too lazy to go back down the hall, fire up the Desktop and check for nightly meh. Not anything fancy, but it will beat toting my 17" Dell to Vegas in a few weeks.. Can't play wow on it though. Pretty sure I will be busy anyway. They say you don't sleep much in Vegas..LOL
@mamawoot Same here. I bought a Macbook Air a couple years back because I thought they were secure, but freely clicking on Google links ended up locking up my Mac in ways more annoying than anything I'd encountered in Windows. Then I bought one of these Chromebooks and I found my solution. If I think a shady site has tried to hijack my system, I can just do a wipe/reinstall of the OS in a fraction of the time it took in Windows. And because I only use it for the internet, there are no apps to need to reinstall. I just wish I'd bought it before I wasted my money on that Mac.
@juststephen I bought this unit the last time it came around. It is a solid machine once you get ChromeOS updated to the most recent version. It can be a bit sluggish at times, but the 1080p screen easily makes up for it.
Gave it to my parents since all they do is browse the web anyways and they can't really get a virus with it. So a win win for me.
Whadda buncha effing whiners... Needed a 'bridge' laptop a couple of months back, bought one. Happy. So, gfriend just bitched again about her ancient laptop so...I bought another one. For the same $160, 'cept I went in as a VMP so $5 well spent except.... I had to scroll past everyone else bitching about $160 to say, 'hey'; it's still a profit deal (Steve Martin 'The (carney) Jerk' folks. Good to go. She'll be happy, and I'll be happy she's not bitching about being unhappy. Win Win. At $160.
@username Just out of curiosity I priced it on Amazon. If you sell it at $215 (the current going price) you have a potential profit of $30, not counting shipping it to Amazon (I'm assuming FBA), but with an initial outlay of $160, and the risk of a return/fraud... the profit is basically non-existent.
Meh cares because this is for fun. I truly believe the management could give less of a shit if they're profitable, as long as they have an active community, and an entertained customer base. I'm sure they're happier making money, but I don't think that's the overall guiding force behind this "experiment".
Wake me up when they have a working word processing program installed on it or one that you can download. I don't get why the Chromebook doesn't have a working word processor. Why not?
@deemoy If Internet access is your issue, I've also heard that Office 365 web apps can be used offline.
If Internet access is not your issue, then you could also use Chrome to remotely access a home or work desktop, which would allow you to use the word processing programs on those. I bought this Chromebook last time, and this is my solution when I travel for work.
If I hadn't had gotten my new workstation laptop yesterday, I may be a LITTLE bit tempted.. but the only thing going for it is the form factor. At $99, it would be hard to say no.
Chromebooks are great as an extra laptop and for people who don't have high power computing needs. I use one for business travel because it lightweight, fast and I'm connecting to work via VPN for office applications. Daughter uses one at college because it is super light to lug around campus and the campus has WIFI everywhere. Got one for my mom because all she needs to do is check email and a few internet pages. Chromebooks work extremely well under these circumstances.
They just closed my [all of our system network's ] at-work work station's access to all Interweb email accounts, so this will let me get access at work.
What am i missing for 30 bucks more i picked up a "NEW" Toshiba from Staples with an AMD A8 PROCESSOR. 8 gig DDR3L of memory windows 10 , and a 1 TB hard drive . yes it was on sale for 300 had a 20% off coupon and a 50 rebate from Toshiba so i paid 190 for it .. so why pay 160 for a used one really not such a good deal ,, and the whole story about the limits on quantity is all bullshit get real ty MODEL NUMBER C55D-B5294
@mellowirishgent That's a great price, but you are comparing an apple to an orange. Sure they are both laptops, but each have their own purpose. I have 2 chromebooks. 1 gets used every week when at my remote office. For VPN and Remote Desktop(which the chromebook does great) I don't need a TB drive, or a DVD drive, or even Windows. I used it yesterday for 9 hours and never plugged it in to power. You got a great deal on a laptop that can replace a desktop. But for me when out and about I'd rather the lightweight, instant on, long battery life, etc that a chromebook gives.
1: Yours has 1366x768 res on a 15.6" screen vs. the 1920x1080 res on a 13.3" display. 2: Yours weighs over 6 lbs, this one weighs less than 3. 3: This one is not infected with Windows 10. 4: The price that anyone can buy your machine for today is over $400 base price, this one is well under $200 even if you have to pay tax and shipping.
In short, two very different machines. You can install most any Windows-based software on your machine, though it doesn't have a terribly powerful processor and the hard drive is slow, meaning that gaming or graphics editing would still be chores on your machine.
The Chromebook can't run anything that can't be run in a browser. So it can't even try to run Minecraft or PhotoShop. On the other hand, if 90% of what you do is browse the internet, check email, and watch Netflix, this will do those things just as well as on your machine, except that this machine is more portable, higher resolution, and cheaper.
I got this new from Amazon last April for my daughter and it's been awesome. Not sure I'd pull the trigger on this if I didn't already have one, but I do recommend it as a good productivity and video watching machine.
I have one of these. It's a great device to watch video (Netflix/Comcast/etc), stream music, and/or web surf. If you are a dedicated google/chrome/android person, this is a great device. It's really quick for what I need it for. I would buy this if I didn't already have this exact model.
I bought this last time it came up. My main hold-up with Chromebooks (generally) was the unfamiliar OS and lack of hard storage. Buuuuut having used mine to travel for work, I've eliminated those concerns by using Chrome to remotely access my work and home desktops (e.g. Google's "Chrome Remote Desktop" extension). That was the deal-maker for me. I'm still getting used to the OS and different keyboard layout - no caps lock key, page up / page down, or home / end - but I can get used to those things.
This is a good Chromebook model. The speakers are surprisingly robust. (And I hate using the word "robust.") Excellent screen color and resolution. Touchpad is wide and multi-touch works great. Keys are nicely spaced and not at all flimsy (although I'd prefer a little more travel, but that's because I PUNCH THE KEYS). Fast boot-up, no web lag. It's solid.
Blanket comment here because I see replies here and there, just want to make my point globally: for people that complain that a Chromebook can "only be used with the internet" (not true), when was the last time you used a computer without internet access? For me, if the internet is out, the power might as well be out - I'm going to grab a book or go outside.
@scottsmith7 I think this is true, but only because Chromebooks are really primarily only useful for internet-based things. Thus, if your PC is without internet, your PC can't do those things either. There's just other things you can still use your PC for, but anyone who is complaining that it's internet only should really be saying they need access to things that aren't internet-based. They're either not explaining their concern adequately or, more likely, not really sure what their concern is. That said, I have a great dislike for Chromebooks because I think they're overpriced (even when marked down) for their features, but I definitely disapprove of people who don't even understand why they're against something.
@Skotyman Your modem is working on its standup act. "Did you ever wonder what would happen if an ENIAC walked into a bar and tried to order a drink? I think it would go a little something like this..."
I've always wondered if these chromebooks could be used to Torrent movies, if one (not me) chooses to do so. Assuming you would just store the movies on a 256g stick and not on the computer itself. If it's even possible to add something like Vuze to it.
@irae That's the Chrome OS software version, which matches the Chrome browser version. You don't have to worry about the hardware until 2020.
All Chromebooks auto-update every two to three weeks, and are currently at version 50 or higher.
Every Chromebook can run Android apps already in the Chrome Web Store or converted with the the ARC Welder app in your link. There is another converter called twerk.
I do not understand all the hate for this awesome machine. I own two Chromebooks, and can do everything I need on them. I use cloud services for almost everything I do, so I do not need the hard drive space. I honestly cannot think of a single thing that I need that this little guy does not do.
BTW, Office365 is awesome. I use it all the time to write papers.
@jaredrod in the description of every meh offer (at the top) they list the estimated delivery dates... for this item it is: Estimated Delivery: 5/9 - 5/11
I need a favor. The next time these come up for sale, would someone, anyone, everyone, remind me of all the problems I'm having with my current laptop so I get one of these? Thanks Meh Community!
Everyone - check the adapter when this arrives - the Chromebook was perfect, out of the box experience was flawless..... until I tried to plug it in. The shipped power adapter was wrong and will not physically fit into the laptop. Adapter shipped was PA5177U-1ACA and it just won't fit. Yes, I raised an issue with "I need help with this purchase". Check before you give this to your wife for Mothers Day! cheers - tim
Chromebook 2 came today. Keyboard isn't functioning properly. Press 1 and it tabs. Press 7 and it spits out y7. 4=t4. Press 2 and you get a 2, but the screen also dims. So, needless to say, this is going to have to go back. I did hook up a bluetooth keyboard and played around with it for a little and really do like it. Too bad it's gonna have to go back.
I bought one for my father-in-law hoping that he would not like it so I could hack the daylights out of it and put Linux on it. He loves the damned thing. My hopes and dreams are dashed.

RAWR!
Would buy for $5
@connorbush $7 tops
Deal doesn't compute - well "meh" be for some it does--
Grrrr
Hey look... The same laptop for the same price!!!
Nah
300 meh's in a row. 643 total.
@TRD I've kicked that habit, if you want to join a support group, let me know
@DMlivezey It is literally keeping me up at night. The last one I missed was at about 200-something in a row and the sale was for a stupid radar detector. I spent a week sulking. Gotta chase that dragon, though.

16GB only and celeron that is meh!
@nymatsui
Celeron? Carrot sticks are way better.
@MehnofLaMehncha Because you need a top-of-the-line i7 to browse the web?
@MehnofLaMehncha I like peanut butter w/ my Celeron. But carrots are good
@compunaut do you add raisins and make Ants On a Login?
@Thumperchick I'm not much for raisins, so technically not. If I use Craisins instead, does that make it Red Ants on a Log(in)?
$99 then we talk
Thank you meh. Appreciate the explanation. I'm one of those individual customers and really appreciate the outstanding customer service you strive for!!
Idk. If selling to third party Amazon retailers means I don't have to log in at midnight to see it's another Chromebook, I say do it.
@stinks move west.
Loved the 1080p screen, but the N2840 kills the deal. Wish it came with 2955U or 3205U.
@akumax A genuine Meh-cintosh.
@akumax Still pretty zippy for normal web stuff and online video, though.
But if you're picking, that's what's wrong, eh? ok.
@wew not sure if this link will work but here goes
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=2388&cmp%5B%5D=2509
@akumax Ouch. Wow. My mechanical watch has a faster processor.
@akumax yeah. worked fine. You're a good linker dinker. I see what people are meaning. Not fast enough for my sooper-secret MIT number crunching, but will handle the gossip sites just fine. I have an old disco ball netgear router,-that's probably not helping my speed much either?
@akumax @wew But if you compare it to what was in a typical netbook, it looks pretty good.

Pretty pricey for a speaker dock.
If you truly wanted all of us to buy one, 99$ would be a great price point.
@wyk3d I agree, I'd buy it for that. Otherwise, I'm gonna keep holding out for a REAL laptop.
If I didn't already buy a normal toshiba lappy and pimp it out with an SSD I'd be on this like white on rice.
@completewally #TRIGGERED Oh my sensibilities!

@bugger OH AND THE 1080P SCREEN MAKES FOR A WONDERFULL PICTURE & VIDEO VIEWER:robot:
@bugger MEH thinks that you need this so badly to overcome the dreaded caps lock trojan that has infected your device.
NO
So you guys have an entire wholesale division? So when you sell 100k worth of receivers in a day... That's just for fun?
@sourhead Sounds like someone is salty...or sour...

Just make it $99 meh and you can pre-bill my card.
I want a Baby Arm Compatible sticker too.

@Mandamm That's because the beds are extremely uncomfortable and there's always a ton of noise. Have fun!
@darkdragon ...And the bastids never turn off their [way too bright and eye-straining] light displays...
These are so great, I got 3 tonight!!! The wife and kids just love them, and of course I got VMP... it's such a great deal. Keep it up meh!
@cshillaber So your Amazon shop is a family business?
@cshillaber How did you get three [3]??!!??
The write-up [and my attempted repurchase] both say that they are limited to one purchase per Mehccount...
I bought one the first time & I love it!
My chromebooks are my almost-exclusive computer/internet machines.
@mamawoot Same here. I bought a Macbook Air a couple years back because I thought they were secure, but freely clicking on Google links ended up locking up my Mac in ways more annoying than anything I'd encountered in Windows. @orken411 I also have purchased more than one Chromebook here, this one is nice for what it's meh.nt to do.
Although I do dislike resellers, some of the write up doesn't make sense.
1) what's in it for them to make price super low to make it seem like a competitor? Especially on a relatively pricy/risky purchase?
2) why would you really care if it happens after the fact, after your sale is over?
But i really do appreciate looking out for us little folks. I wish there was a better way than capchas to stop reseller from buying fukus.
@username There's a reseller market for Fukus??
I gotta admit, I love the bling, but I don't think they sourced these from meh.

Another Chromebook? ZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Wake me up when they have a working word processing program installed on it or one that you can download. I don't get why the Chromebook doesn't have a working word processor. Why not?
@deemoy What's wrong with Google Docs?
@FightingMongoos I don't think you can download it to a Chromebook. You have to use it on the Internet.
@deemoy I'm pretty sure that Google Docs has an offline mode on a Chromebook.
@deemoy Google Docs offline mode works pretty well. It still feels a little strange to use, but it is seamless.
@BrianRamsay I did not know that. I will give it a try. Thanks.
@Blahbbs Any chrome browser can do offline google docs. https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375012?hl=en

That write up, though.
It's solid.
@fjk5g8 there are shortcut keys for some of those missing keystrokes and some limited customization
What's the point of all the blinky lights on my internet modem? Nothing to do with the deal, this just seems like the place to ask.
@Skotyman If they stop blinking, panic!
@Skotyman Your modem is working on its standup act. "Did you ever wonder what would happen if an ENIAC walked into a bar and tried to order a drink? I think it would go a little something like this..."
@trisk I just wondered, as I snapped out of my millionth nightly trance from staring into the lights, if it's trying to tell me something.
@writdenied It took a little googling but I get it.
I've always wondered if these chromebooks could be used to Torrent movies, if one (not me) chooses to do so. Assuming you would just store the movies on a 256g stick and not on the computer itself. If it's even possible to add something like Vuze to it.
@ikickedagirl I've used the BitTorrent app for Chrome (jstorrent). Also https://webtorrent.io/
Anyone knows if this can run Android / PlayStore Apps? This page says Chromebook 37+ but I don't know if this refers to the hardware or software version.
https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/6088175?hl=en
Fedora works pretty well on these.
Should I sell my Surface Pro 3 and purchase this Chromebook?
@jmendenhall you should sell it to me for a dollar.
I see in reviews that the screens tend to go to shit and toshiba customer service gives you the middle finger. Anyone have this problem?
Just posting this again for anyone who buys this today.
I found the instructions very easy to follow.

need Android OS! more apps! Battery is good point to use! thanks meh!
How long do these usually take to ship?
@jaredrod in the description of every meh offer (at the top) they list the estimated delivery dates... for this item it is: Estimated Delivery: 5/9 - 5/11
I need a favor. The next time these come up for sale, would someone, anyone, everyone, remind me of all the problems I'm having with my current laptop so I get one of these? Thanks Meh Community!
How much is this item
@Adriennesu06
It's not for sale anymore.
@oakton_geek Should be PA5192U-1ACA, which is the one that works.
update to above, 5.5mm plug diameter is what was shipped, Amazon indicates that the right replacement PS is 1.7mm diameter.
Anyone know the maximum size sd i can use with this?
@jaredrod It's an SDXC reader so it should support up to 2TB in theory.
