@Teripie I want a smart ass-phone. If it's that great, I shouldn't even have to get it out, I should be able to communicate what I want with ass-twitching.
Robin is unlocked so if your SIM is compatible with an unlocked phone, then you’re golden. Supported mobile networks vary by location. Robin is fully compatible with the networks in most countries we ship to. In the US, Nextbit phones work with T-Mobile and AT&T.
This is why you get a phone that can handle an SD card. They only provide 100GB (if you are a kickstarter) and you could put at least a 64GB card in many existing phones and never have to archive off anything.
The android OS does a lot of this for you. You can sync your photos and videos so they go into the Google cloud if you trust that sort of thing. As for me, I keep everything local unless I specifically tell it which things to offload. I don't want the phone making those decisions for me.
@cengland0 I definitely don't trust having the only copy of anything be on my phone, but recently discovered Syncthing which is a nice way to automatically back up your phone or other devices to your own computers.
"...makes running out of space history." Seems like there should be a huge asterisk there. *Assuming you always have access to WiFi or fast cellular data connection.
Edit: Example of suckage potential: My roku doesn't have an SD card at the moment. Which is fine because it'll "adapt to my preferences" and delete apps/channels I don't use very often. The problem happens when I do want to watch one and I have to wait for it to re-download and install the app/channel. I usually get bored of waiting and find another channel to watch. Apply that concept to a phone where you may not have good signal and and major suckage ensues.
@luvche21 hulu, netflix, amazon, youtube,... I think kids stuff like disney jr and pbs kids... Others like plex, vemo, vudu... I tried to watch joe dirt 2 on crackle and i had to re-download it
Very much looking forward to this phone: Moto X Pure Edition Unlocked, pentaband LTE so you can use it with any carrier (including Verizon!) MicroSD support (up to 128 GB)
@dashcloud That does look interesting. Bought the current gen Moto X a while back (not long enough back) and you could only get the Pure Edition on T-mobile. So I got stuck with the Verizon bloatware and 32GB.
@dashcloud A bunch of Android news sites reported yesterday that they'd start selling it today, and I got all bouncy when I saw your post and remembered I had to run over there and make one for myself, and then it turns out all the sites were wrong and I have the sadz. Not your fault (thanks @sohmageek) and honestly, my (original) Nexus 5 is still perfectly good and I probably shouldn't splurge, but ... new toy!
@dashcloud Sounds like they go on sale at 3 pm EDT, or as we Central Daylight Time denizens call it, "a few minutes." Whoohoo.
@sohmageek They're very nice for people who can't handle anything more. (I actually would have bought one of the new iPod Touches had they put the current iPhone in one of them, but they didn't so I won't.)
I must not be doing enough on my phone, but I don't think I've ever run out of space. I'm more interested in something like https://fi.google.com because I have terrible cell signal at my house. I just don't have a Nexus 6 to use with it.
Slick campaign, looks interesting and it seems things are moving to the cloud whether we like it or not. But I'm not ready to go all in.
What are these guys really offering? Low price for nice specs? Seems like otherwise the barriers to blowing them out of the water if they get any traction with the cloud emphasis are pretty low for the big boys.
BTW, what is "special SIM tray" and "very special SIM tray"?
@brainmist The only kickstarter campaign I backed was Mediocre Labs. I scored a FUKU and a "K" badge. Win! I wanted to back others but had doubts about if I would ever get my product or my money back so I didn't do it.
@cengland0 Interestingly I've backed about a dozen projects and never have been burned yet. In fact, the only one I held out on thinking I would get burned has shipped almost all their products so far (The Storm E-Bike)
@Bingo The problem I have with backing is that you put it on your credit card and then they get months if not a year to complete the project. If you get nothing, you cannot dispute the charge because it is past the 60 day dispute period. You have absolutely no protection at all.
@brainmist I've been burned only once, and it was a creator who painted a glorious picture of his idea and took forever to send us something crappy. His huge leftover inventory pops up every so often on DailySteals and, although I like DailySteals, I hope they sit on that shit forever. I'm glad they don't have forums because I'd vent about it endlessly there.
But other than that, I've gotten cool shit like Exploding Kittens, barrel-aged sriracha, the Anova sous vide cooker, a very nicely done handmade fountain pen (I collect fountain pens), and lots of other great stuff, including the first fuku, of course. You just have to accept the fact that creators generally underestimate how long their projects will take. I used to be uptight about that, but I let it go.
@editorkid I should be so lucky as to deal with slightly off estimates. Or even hideously off estimates. But, of the 33 projects I've backed, 20% haven't delivered and are at least a year overdue (most considerably more), one 'creator' was eventually pursued by a state attorney for fraud, but has only started delivering in that state, one has long since completed a mediocre knockoff and been a y
@marklog As well as not having to install iTunes. You can install SD cards and replace your batteries yourself in many Android models. I can customize my home screen. I can use a standard USB cable available anywhere and it doesn't need to be certified by anyone. If I connect it to my computer, I can transfer my files to any directory I want. I can pick which unlock screen I want to use -- if any. It senses hand gestures, knows when you're not looking at the screen so can autopause videos. Some devices like Samsung can display two apps on the screen at one time.
All the apps need to be approved by Apple before they appear in iTunes. This prevents apps from appearing like the shaking baby app which was removed after complaints. I've never heard of Google not allowing any apps (probably has happened but not to the extent of Apple). The approval process also delays releases of apps due to the lead-time necessary to get it approved.
Not sure how iTunes works but if I buy an app on Google play, I can use it on all my android devices without any additional payment.
Not saying there is anything wrong with Apple OSX. I use both a Mac Pro and Windows machines daily and they both work great. However, I could never use an iPhone as my only smartphone device. It's just too locked down. I wouldn't even know how to install my own MP3 rip that I extracted from my legally bought CD. There's probably a way but it's not easy. With Android, I just put it in any directory I want and all the media players find it automatically.
@hollboll I'm super excited for the iPhone 6s Plus.. Getting 128GB so I don't run out of storage anymore.. I've had an iPhone 5 for a while now, and I'm ready for an upgrade! My wife has a 4s still, and is getting a 64GB 6s, she's also excited! I'm going space gray, and she's torn between rose gold and gold.. haha
@marklog I try not to get into android/apple fights, since I generally love technology.. But when it comes to my phone I really like Apple because things just work.. Pretty reliably.. I also carry a blackberry for work (which randomly reboots when I try to answer calls).. But I have an android tablet which is fun to mess with. It's rooted, and I love the freedom.. I don't love that half the apps don't work on it without a fight because it's not one of the most popular brands.. I don't love that there was only ONE official OS update since I bought the thing, and it made stuff worse.. I do love some of the custom OSes that were made..
But my point is that apple and android both have good and bad aspects. I know my iphone won't have the most cutting edge tech usually.. But it will work smoothly, be supported for a long time, and run basically any app I can find for it.
@marklog meh... Where's your Apple Pay... yes you've had google Wallet for a while, but it wasn't as supported or as embraced as I've seen with apple pay. BTW... I hope I don't see anything I really want... I'm really hoping wireless charging is next year. I just got the iphone 6 3/4 paid off... I want to finish before I Start buying a new one :)
@cengland0 A few notes.. with the apple app store you can use anything you bought on any of your devices (and even "side load" them to a family member's devices that's on a different account!)
Adding an mp3 is as simple as dragging it into itunes. I barely use itunes, but I do have it on my computer. Any syncing I do is wireless 95% of the time..
I use a mophie battery case which uses a startard microusb connector, and has enough juice to charge my phone from about 20% to about 98%, and will charge the phone at the same time as it's charging the case.
@kadagan I've hated the size of the 6 since it was announced, and have stuck with my 5, but it's pretty beat up and my 64GB is constantly at 0 bytes free, so 6s, here I come… And, now that I'm using Lightroom Mobile a bit, the lack of pocket convenience might be worth it. Either way… rose gold!
@dashcloud I've used it (CCK) a lot for digital audio interfacing, haven't used it much for its intended purpose, but I think it would let me offload photos at least. My space issue was more related to music, and when you get to that point you start having this problem where whenever there's space, something pending will find a way to fill it, and/or iTunes will resync things you panic-deleted on the phone itself. Totally my own doing, but still not going to get 64 again now that 128 is an option…
No.
Now if this was a smart-ass phone, then maybe.
@Teripie I want a smart ass-phone. If it's that great, I shouldn't even have to get it out, I should be able to communicate what I want with ass-twitching.
In case anyone else was curious like I was:
Robin is unlocked so if your SIM is compatible with an unlocked phone, then you’re golden.
Supported mobile networks vary by location. Robin is fully compatible with the networks in most countries we ship to. In the US, Nextbit phones work with T-Mobile and AT&T.
Sounds terrible
No Verizon? No thanks.

@cengland0 but it looks sweet.
@marklog Debatable. I like the look of my Note 4 better.
@cengland0 Cheerfully clinging to a pint-sized, 3 year old Nokia with a card slot and an indestructible case.
@cengland0 I definitely don't trust having the only copy of anything be on my phone, but recently discovered Syncthing which is a nice way to automatically back up your phone or other devices to your own computers.
"...makes running out of space history." Seems like there should be a huge asterisk there.

@medz is there that much to do on a Roku? I've only ever used the basic channels though, am I missing out?
@luvche21 hulu, netflix, amazon, youtube,... I think kids stuff like disney jr and pbs kids... Others like plex, vemo, vudu... I tried to watch joe dirt 2 on crackle and i had to re-download it
@medz others i missed, amazon music, Google play, tmz,
@medz espn, mlb, hbo, showtime
@marklog Used to do HBO, but we don't pay for TV anymore. The people we're mooching DirectTV streaming stuff off of don't have the movie package.
Very much looking forward to this phone:
Moto X Pure Edition

@dashcloud That does look interesting. Bought the current gen Moto X a while back (not long enough back) and you could only get the Pure Edition on T-mobile. So I got stuck with the Verizon bloatware and 32GB.
@dashbutt I really hope that phone lives up to the hype.
@dashcloud looks nice. Moto by Lenovo.
@dashcloud A bunch of Android news sites reported yesterday that they'd start selling it today, and I got all bouncy when I saw your post and remembered I had to run over there and make one for myself, and then it turns out all the sites were wrong and I have the sadz. Not your fault (thanks @sohmageek) and honestly, my (original) Nexus 5 is still perfectly good and I probably shouldn't splurge, but ... new toy!
@dashcloud I, too, was waiting on the MXPE, but I opted to go with the Moto G. I'm too likely to break it to invest $500 into the phone.
My expected delivery date is Friday, but I don't trust it. They don't even show my phone as assembled yet.
@editorkid very sorry. Have you tried iPhones? If not I'd suggest that you wait a week for the announcement next Wednesday.
@dashcloud Sounds like they go on sale at 3 pm EDT, or as we Central Daylight Time denizens call it, "a few minutes." Whoohoo.

I've been so severely burned on Kickstarter, I doubt I'll ever back a new project again.
@brainmist The only kickstarter campaign I backed was Mediocre Labs. I scored a FUKU and a "K" badge. Win! I wanted to back others but had doubts about if I would ever get my product or my money back so I didn't do it.

@brainmist Ditto on that. 1 burn by Nourishmat on Kickstarter & I feel wounded. I did back Meh, but who could resist that incentive of a Fuku?
@cengland0 and Kickstarter had their money, so what do they care? Yeah, the lack of accountability is awful.
@lilystang hah! Yes, I'd back a Mediocre Labs Kickstarter.. But the rest? Done.
@brainmist I've been burned only once, and it was a creator who painted a glorious picture of his idea and took forever to send us something crappy. @Lotsofgoats
@connorbush Is that from Wolf of Wallstreet? That movie was so disappointing. I watched the whole thing and didn't see a single wolf.
@cengland0 yes, from the wolfless movie
This is my next:
Dat rose gold rumor tho...
@hollboll negstar.
@marklog you're wrong but it's okay. ;)
@hollboll Fingers crossed…
@hollboll

128 Gb S6. Retail price, shiny blue. Yay mainstream experience crap!!
