Unfortunately, when I say this is the ultimate GISHWHES, I mean: this is the last GISHWHES. If you’ve ever considered joining this riot of kindness, absurdity, and creativity, now is the time.
I’m also going to go out on a limb and proclaim that this will be the GISHWHES to top all GISHWHES…es. So let it be written. So let it be done.
August 5-12 will be the fourth year that a little group from our meh community will join the hunt as team Breakfast Octopi. You could be on that team.
Registration closes at the end of the day on July 24th. That means you only had 2 days and 21.5 hours left to register when I posted this. But you didn’t read this when I posted it, did you? Now you have even less time.

If you aren’t familiar with GISHWHES, I think the name sums it up best. GISHWHES is the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. You can learn more here: https://www.gishwhes.com/

To Register, simply go to https://www.gishwhes.com/register.php by this Monday, July 24th. The cost is about $20. (It’s worth every penny.) Once you have completed registration, you will be able to select a team. Search for BreakfastOctopi. Join.
Once you join the team, I will send a slack invitation to the email address you used to register. We will use slack for hunt communication and item submission. Honestly, this slack team might be reason enough to join the hunt.
We are a casual team, so there’s no pressure to knock out dozens of items. The only thing we ask is that you be sure to submit a picture for the team item. And follow the rules. (Examples: Don’t share your work until the hunt has ended and they give the okay; don’t be a schmuck.)
Are you thinking, “Hmmm. I want to join, but do they want me to join?” Yes. We need you.
Are you one of those “I don’t want to take a spot from someone else who is somehow better or more deserving than I am” people? (@joelmw) Stop. We need you. We have 15 spots to fill and only a couple of days to fill them. You don’t want to make us play with strangers, do you?

@christinewas i must respectfully decline the team, however i am open to being summoned to try to support the team where possible.
@christinewas honestly as exciting as paying for the privilege of being spammed in my inbox by Misha for the next year is, I’m honestly too busy right now to even think about participating. If there’s anything I can do to help the team I’ll be happy to but I can’t take an active role.
@jbartus If you haven’t done so already, I recommend unsubscribing from those emails.
@christinewas I must echo @tardy’s sentiments, I’m not gonna be able to make it happen this year, but y’all have a blast and if there are things y’all need help with I’ll be happy to try.

a.) i’ve never participated but recall hearing about this ages ago and only today realized it is not called 'gishwishes’
b.) i did a scavenger hunt for a local radio station as a teen with my friends one summer and it was a lot of fun (procured things like crystal pepsi, a lechemere receipt, photo with a dj past or present- my dad used to dj for this station :))
c.) i hope the meh team will post all the fun tasks you complete once the hunt has ended

I call on @katylava and @hollboll to address your nonsense–and, I hope, slap you around a little (or a lottle would be fine). There may even be a discussion on the subject somewhere in the forum. I don’t care enough to find it. I do know that the name has a proud tradition and, as a returning alum, I feel full entitled to abuse it, barring contrary guidance from the BO (@snapster himself)–which of course is always welcome. I don’t invoke the name of god often, but perhaps it’s necessary in this case.

I don’t recall that there’s anything official about the gishwhes team (in fact, my recollection is that it’s officially unofficial), but the whole enterprise was started within full view of meh, with the participation and leadership of mediocre staff–and there was never any problem with our use of the name BreakfastOctopi.
I’m pretty sure that @medz is just fucking around–and that’s fine. But I also know 1) that others might not understand and 2) there has been a problem of folks starting things without the proper knowledge or approval of Mediocre staff or the Great and Powerful Octopus himself, and that’s generally frowned upon. Hell, our group might be frowned upon too, but it’s got a history and connections to the very heart of Mediocrity. I guess what I’m saying is that, official or not, we’ve got a motherfucking dispensation.

@medz Indeed. And as it happens, I hadn’t read that thread. The Mediocre forums are like some dark, secret club. I sometimes venture over, but I never feel quite authentic enough. I don’t know the secret handshake or any of that shit. Although I have been a member since way back in the distant past even months before the Kickstarter (we found out through a fairly high-ranking employee who’s a friend). But I didn’t really start to engage the community until after the Kickstarter.
Anyway, yeah. What’s weird is that I don’t think BreakfastOctopi has ever been official official, but it does seem to have a sort of sanction, if you know what I mean. And provenance–provenance is exactly what it has: it arose from the very bowels of Mediocre (sorry, @katylava, I mean that in the best possible way, however it might sound; in ancient cultures–probably in some modern ones–the bowels are the seat of the deepest emotions). But it also seems to me that BreakfastOctopi exists in a sort of undeclared space outside of officialdom, which totally makes sense. I don’t want to break that. It’s a special kind of thing.

@dzieciom Super helpful in saving us from complete strangers. You would at least have meh in common with us. And I’m totally serious about that. I think I’m about to text all of my friends and beg them to save me from GISHWHES strangers. (Though GISHWHES strangers are probably some of the better strangers out there.)
Plus, we’re not competitive. So we really don’t need you to be helpful.

Last year we had to turn people away, wonder why this year is so different.
Here’s a pic of Gishes. I planted him as part of the hunt last year, in August and he’s thriving even though we are having such weird weather. He’s getting so big at only a year old(or a year planted) Good things come from Gishwhes people, Come join the madness. Not sure if you can see it, but there’s a bunny in the background who agrees with me and is saying come on in.

I just got back from vacation and joined. I felt bad for not being more of a help last year so I didn’t want to join and be a burden but it looks like you are short teammates so you’re stuck with me again.
