The forum does a new thing!
19When you scroll down through the forum, it now loads the next "page" of old threads! Neat new feature, @Shawn.
(Before, it would just dead end. To find an older thread you would have to know what you were looking for and use the search tool, or get google to help you out.)
I would also like to mention my appreciation for the new "add topic" button on the main menu, saving me one click and having to read.
In a thread, that button changes to "add comment" - for those who didn't want to scroll to the bottom of the page to comment.

I thought it was recycling our comments into new comments?
@thismyusername No, we print your comments so they can be recycled into boxes, toilet paper, and other consumer goods
Nice!
Thank you @shawn for capitalizing the new "add topic"..it irritated me more than it should that it didn't match the rest of the selections.
Oooh oooh just had to test the add comment button LOL
I loved the new drop-down that lets you choose the forum you want. How very un Meh of you.
The new thing it's doing for me is not showing image embeds, I see YouTube videos but no images. Is it just me?
@Ignorant I'm sort of having that same problem. It's like the images show up as a grey box initially and then if I wait a long time, they eventually do load. It didn't do that yesterday.
They are now working for me. Issue resolved, nothing to see here.
@Ignorant It seemed to work for a little while then the problem comes back. I think it depends on how many visitors there are at one time. This is what I see before the image loads:
@cengland0 originally I wasn't even getting the gray boxes, it was just nothing. Now I get the boxes and the image seems to pop in right away at least the times I've looked.
If you say the issue is intermittent then I'm calling this not resolved, stuff to see here.
@Ignorant It's now Saturday morning at 7:14 am eastern and it's still doing it. It does it on my mobile device using 4GLTE as well as using business class internet 50GB connected via 802.11 Gigabit ethernet.
@cengland0 50GB? Please tell me that's a typo. I get 2 Mb on a good day.
@SSteve Not a typo. I work from home and am a heavy internet user (newsgroups if you know what I mean) so I have business class internet that costs approximately $140/month.
@cengland0 the typo is "GB". Pretty sure you mean "Mbps".
@shawn Ha,ha. You're right. I didn't catch that. Yes, it's 50 Mbps.
@cengland0 Ok. I feel better now. I was thinking you had fifty parallel fiber links.
@cengland0 Which newsgroup provider do you use?
@dashcloud I use supernews because of their retention and the ridiculous number of concurrent downloads allowed. I probably had their service for 15 to 20 years now.
Only problem is that they have given some groups (four letters starting with R and another starting with M) the ability to remove posts without sending in individual DMCA notices to the provider.
@SSteve I'm getting 100 Gigabits per second internet over here in Austin :P
@eulestadt So you run Netflix out of your house?
@SSteve Nah. Just good ol' Google Fiber.
We made a few small forum tweaks this week.
There was a bug with lazy loaded images on iOS 8 that @Ignorant encountered. We quickly fixed it.
@cengland0 I don't think your issues are related to how many concurrent visitors we have. What browser are you using? What extensions do you have installed?
@shawn I use chrome exclusively on both my Android devices, Mac, and PC. All three of them suddenly have this image issue.
Extensions on mobile Chrome, none.
Extensions on Mac and PC: Adblock Plus (Disabled for meh), Bookmarks Menu, Chromebleed, EditThisCookie, Ghostery (meh is whitelisted), Google Cast, Google Docs, LastPass, Save to Pocket, Unofficel Meh Forum Unread Scroller
@cengland0 ran some more tests with Google Chrome on Mac here and everything's working as it should be. Any other Chrome users out there care to report?
@shawn @katylava yeah! Also fixed the garbled up header icons on my iPhone running iOS7. Thx. Before: ('After' not required, now it just works.)
@RedOak why aren't you running iOS 8?
@shawn I like 7 and am running a an iPhone 5 so not missing much. Will do it at some point. But having started on tech stuff with a Commodore PET, Trash-80, and PDP-11, I'm conditioned by lots of tech cycles not to mess with stuff that is working great.
@RedOak Or at least have a way to go back.
@jqubed oh how I'd love the ability to go back (without jumping thru save-off-a-copy-of-the-backup hoops)! Or the ability to pick a version. We have an iPad 2 running iOS6 for which I'd love to have iOS7.
@shawn 10 comments seems awfully low for tl;dr mode- how did you come up with that number?
@dashcloud I looked a little bit at average number of replies per comment. 10 comments might sound low until you realize each comment brings 3 replies with it and you quickly end up with 40+ "posts".
@shawn okay- that makes better sense then. Thanks!
@shawn But the problem with that (and I always click to see all posts) is that new replies that are posted on the first few posts are never seen. Perhaps if you could expand all comments that have unread replies, then I wouldn't have a problem with the low 10 number.
@dashcloud Also if you had a ton of unread comments and then clicked on expand comments you lost the marking that they were unread which is a pain. Any way to keep them marked as unread with you expand to see what is now hidden? For that matter you lose that as well when you post a comment in a thread. I'd love for that not to go away (like it will now) when I click on say it.
@Kidsandliz My recommendation is use the wonderful Meh scroller extension: https://meh.com/forum/topics/hey-you-wanna-click-a-button-to-scroll-through-unread-replies Works on everything except iPhone/iPad. Unless a thread is really short, I just let the extension do its thing, and it hasn't failed me yet.
@Kidsandliz unread comment/reply indicator doesn't disappear when you click the button to expand
@shawn I thought it did as occasionally on some threads I had read very little it then looked like I had read it all when I clicked on it… Maybe I just hit a glitch like the two times this month I clicked meh, was still signed in but I notice no meh face… Oh well… not that important.
@shawn Thanks for letting us see who's starring posts again!
If I could down-vote this feature I would. Just kidding. Don't EVER go there meh!
@dashcloud dang it now you can tell when I star myself (like priming a tip jar ya know).
@thismyusername Only if it is an original comment and not a reply to one :)
@thismyusername I like your analogy.
@shawn Hmmm...this poses a dilemma for me. As an organizational method, I have been starring every post when I read it the first time, including those by members who are clueless and/or have objectionable opinions. While it doesn't always work, it helps me assess which posts I have time to read on my aged tablet in the short time periods I use it. If a post has 100 comments and I've starred it, its usually safe to open it and scroll through unread comments. But if I haven't starred it, that would generally be far too many comments to read before I have to shut down the tablet. Now that my name is attached to starring these posts, if I continue to use this method I will look like an asshole for "supporting" feeble-minded opinions.
@gio well that's a creative use of stars.
@RedOak One does what one needs to do. There have been a few posts I felt really bad about starring, but since it was anonymous I told myself it wasn't really important. Now I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to me to scroll back through all those old posts and remove my star from the ones that trouble my conscience. Maybe it just bothers me more than it should.
@gio Many of us are having the same issue.
I understand the use of stars to single out particular comments that are either humorous, making a significant point, or to show solidarity with a comment. But it is funny, now that the individuals starring a comment are visible again, how many people I have noticed starring their own posts. I like the analogy posted above by @thismyusername that "people are priming the tip jar". I just don't get why users really care at all about the stars. I would like to think that most people here are just trying to be humorous, and not trying to offend others. I could care less whether a star is next to my comment at all (there probably aren't many). Wanting to see who starred me I think adds the possibility of cliquishness, or even being resentful of a person who starred a comment contrary to what you posted. People will deny it, but is human nature. If stars are necessary, which I think for an online community like this they probably are, I for one liked the anonymity factor of them. Sorry, if this post looks too deeply into the "star thing". I am just in one of those moods tonight - if you like I will add the "Lighten up Francis" picture myself :)
@mfladd I still think we need to make @TaRDy the goat for creating a browser extension to automatically star your own posts.
@jqubed See I didn't even know this exsisted. But anyone who made an extension to do this would have my vote. Unfortunately, after a quick look @TaRDy served as goat for Nov. 2014. Can be you goat'ed twice?
@mfladd Nope. @Tardy jumped the gun. @cengland0 was the real goat.
@narfcake Thanks. I see I had to read further down to see what happened there.
@mfladd yea that was @narfcake's fault...narf made me ruin the nice list
@narfcake In the time it took me to find that list, you already found and posted it (or more likely, you already had it posted before I even came here from my email notification).
Curse you goat and your speedy goat searches!
I feel like @TaRDy's strong desire to be the goat is the best argument against him being goat.
@TaRDy Don't worry, you'll be goated sooner or later for your antics.
@jqubed It's probably the latter. There's definitely a delay when it comes to the notifications.
@narfcake I do like how @TaRDy pulled the goat blame card on you, but if he created an evil extension that stars yourself - he has my vote.
@mfladd but could you care more?
Nope.
@nadroj But after reading your reply "but could you care more?" it could be taken in two ways. The first way, as in asking me if I could put a little more effort into caring - so came my reply of "nope...I don't care. But it could also be taken as: well, you just wrote a long rambling diatribe about "stars", so you do actually care.......DAMN IT!
and my apologies I did not mean to start a new conversation, just a reply (still sleepy) Actually, I don't have to take responsibilty for this mishap - it is @narfcakes fault - yes!
@mfladd Speaking of non-responsibility, are the email notifications delayed again? I didn't get one for this, and I can vouch I was still asleep at the time.
@narfcake Ha! I was earlier going to hit you up with this question when you mentioned it above. I am getting very spotty notifications. Some come, some don't which makes checking each thread I spout nonsense in tiresome. I have checked and rechecked my notification box a couple of times to no avail. Glitch? Who's at fault here? I am relieving you of the burden on this one and calling out meh!
Bringing up old stuff, but whatever. @narfcake You didn't get a notification before because of the 's' added at the end. Without the appropriate apostrophe, the forum thought the s was part of your name. Also, @mfladd, I'm pretty sure @nadroj's 'could you care' question was referring to your common misuse of the phrase "could(n't) care less". When you say you could care less, you are implying that you do indeed care. The correct usage is couldn't care less because you're saying you've reached the lowest possible level of caring. Okay, I'm going back to bed with a heating pad now, I think.
@PurplePawprints My Purple friend, Ha! I can tell you are bored with the lack of activity here. In the future, I will look to you to notify me of my grammatical mistakes. There will probably be a lot of them. :)
@mfladd Yeah, sorry about that. I'm laying in bed on a heating pad, with a laptop in my lap, and am extremely bored. I wasn't trying to be uppity, just pointing out one of those things that half the people always get wrong. My grammar is not as good as it used to be, so I try to not to go full-on nazi anymore.
@PurplePawprints Didn't think you were uppity at all. I tend to free flow things which leads to either grammatical mistakes or incomplete thoughts that when I re-read I can understand how they might be misunderstood. But it is your job now to keep me in check. Hope you have some extra time.
@mfladd I shall fulfill this mission to the best of my ability. I'm so glad I don't have a job.
@Thumperchick - And you can see who starred a post by hovering your cursor over the star. As of today (I think) this includes the replies as well as the comments.
@Shawn, Niiiiice.
(Though now I feel somehow exposed).
@KDemo They brought that feature back a few days ago. Thanks again, @shawn!
@Thumperchick - I was thinking it was just on the comments before today, but of course I may have missed it.
I should specify I'm on a PC, may be different for mobile users.
@KDemo I'm PC as well. I know I saw it yesterday. shrug It doesn't matter when it happened, just that it happened. :)
@Thumperchick - I'm just glad it works now, too . . .my entire self image is based on meh stars ;-)
Question: (slightly off topic) Does anyone else have issues with not receiving all of their email notifications when someone replies to you? I maybe receiving them about 50% of the time. Not sure what is up with that.
@mfladd - I think if you have the thread open when someone tags you, you won't get a notification.
@mfladd It's supposed to be that if you view the thread within 10? minutes of being tagged, you won't get the email. Sometimes I get the email anyway.
Weird. It's almost as if just adding pagination would instantly make this a moot feature.
