The darkest evening of the year
10A Google search gives split results in whether last night or tonight is the date of the longest sunset-to-sunrise period in the northern hemisphere this year. (Discounting wobble and other complications).
Another topic by @Cerridwyn mentioned this annual moment yesterday.

I always like the quiet and the sense of slowing-down in the human frenzy pace, this time of year: after much holiday seasonal to-do madness; before the harshest winter weather.
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
BY ROBERT FROST
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Happy holidays to all

Thanks for this. Yesterday was a very long day indeed and today I needed some calm. This was perfect.
I pulled his ‘Collected Works’ off the shelf, and tomorrow I’ll make a cup of tea and sit on the patio (it’s going to be 70 or so) and reread. Thanks, and I’d never connected ‘darkest evening’ with solstice. Something new to think about.
Lovely! It’s raining like a bastard here (Southern California) and it’s dark and foreboding. It feels like the shortest day/longest night.
