Out of this list, yeah, Fresh Prince the hands down winner, but that's mostly because theme songs that explicitly explain a show's premise are the best theme songs.
I submit Lidsville
and for no particular reason, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl
All you chumps are wrong. Can't believe this took 90 mins to get posted. Maybe it should be Irk's "Terribly Wrong" song. But no, it's the baddest of bad asses, Shaft.
I went with Fresh Prince. But I'm still a fan of the oldies, like Happy Days, I love Lucy, Laverne and Shirley, Gilligans Island, Addams Family, Mr. Ed, the Brady Bunch. A lot of the 60s-80s songs. As a kid I even had a couple books with TV theme songs, so I could learn all the words (I know the Love Boat lyrics, But rarely watched it). When I learned to play the flute in high school I then got TV theme song sheet music. I really had a thing for TV theme songs as a kid.
@remo28 Is it The TV Theme Song Singalong Songbook of which you speak? If so, I had them too! That's why I could at one point sing the Hogan's Heros theme! I think I still have both volumes.
@mossygreen I had to google and look at the images to be sure, but yes I had both of those. The books may still be at my dads house, or he may have gotten rid of them, hard to say.
@ivansgreat My hubby and I went to Comikaze in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago, and they had KITT there. I had the song stuck in my head off and on all weekend. :)
@ivansgreat So, I'm a bit too young for this show, and this was the first time I've heard this song. Does anyone hear a similarity in the background "bassish" beat to the theme song from Outsourced (by Punjabi MC)?
@KDemo This is EXACTLY what I came here to write, and here you had already written it. Top shelf, my friend. Best theme song of anything of any time of ever.
@hchavers If I thought about it, I could probably get most of the theme song. I used to be able to recite it. Gilligan's Island also seems an appropriate choice given last night's FUKU event. A 3 hour click... A 3 hour click
There are two theme songs. The one at the beginning and the one at the end...that finishes with "so join us here each week my friends you're sure to get a smile...from seven stranded castaways...here at Gilligans aisle."
@hchavers I'd have to cheat for the closing credits. The channel I used to watch the reruns on always talked over the ending credits. So I only remember part of it. No phone no light no motor cars not a single luxury. Like Robinson Carusoe it's as primitive as can be. So join us here each week my friend your sure to catch a smile from 7 stranded castaways here on Gilligans Isle.
@hchavers Nope. It was one of relatively few TV themes to be a hit record (compared to the large number of movie songs that do), but it was a theme song first before becoming a hit.
I'm an old fart, and my fave is "Hill Street Blues." In fact, thinking about themes has left me ready to sit for a HSB marathon. ( And "Rockford Files" wasn't bad, neither.)
Man, there are lots of good ones that I had forgotten about, but I'm just going to go and mention my personal favorite: Barney Miller. Personal favorite meaning I've actually downloaded the file and have had it on my devices fir years.
@mehjohnson I was a teenager when Lambchop was on. I just remember this song coming on and having to quickly change the channel. "Crap, It's stuck in my head again"
Where's the love for PeeWee's Playhouse? Poor fella was strung up as though he was chokin his chicken at a Disney movie. Seems like he was in the correct venue imo.
I really like the theme song to King of the Hill, by one of the most underrated bands of all time, but the BEST THEME SONG EVER?! How can it not be THIS?! [1]: "FLASH -AHHHHH!"
@Deanmeh I know this thread's gone dormant, but it suddenly occurred to me that I know the answer. Turns out, you got it right. (Although "Rawhide" should also be mentioned somewhere on this page.)
Well, I came here to say the theme song from Chuck (I know, it's already a song before the show) "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" by Cream, but I have to second @PocketBrain and go with the theme from Firefly. Huge oversight that not being on the official list!
@TimWalterPeter Gunn is really and truly one of the great theme songs, and just a great song in general. If you have Amazon Prime, a soundtrack album is availble in Prime Music (also Mr. Lucky Goes Latin).
@PacoTLM did yo uknow the ACTUAL Texas Ranger musem in Waco, has a whole (maybe 10x20) room devoted to that show, with lots of Memoribilia and props on display? (Behind Glass, on Loan From Chuck Himself)
So help me, I'm hearing "Winky Dink and You" in my head. This is as Meh as it gets, I think. I have an original, never-used Winky Dink kit, with the screen & everything. It ranks right up there with the fuku bags as a treat I treasure.
@SSteve Ha! If you could see me, you would know there's no way I have a "fitness thing". I only exercise to maintain enough strength to lift beer bottles. :-)
@kaighintze Yep. That's how it happens. All of a sudden one more pops into your head and you say "I can't believe I didn't think of this one!!" Case in point: Danny Bonaduce is one of the significant factors in why I play bass.
@duodec YES!!! Written By Danny Elfman, who also scored the Michael Keaton/Tim Burton Batman Movies(and most of the rest of Burton's Movies).And Of course, the Simpsons Theme. also, a Member of Oingo Boingo. and married to Bridget Fonda.
I was just discussing this with a friend today. Some have already been mentioned. I just want to add Rockford Files. the Andy Griffith Show, Dallas, Little House on the Prairie, LA Law, thirtysomething, St Elsewhere, Miami Vice.
This has been going on for days, and nobody has mentioned the answer to any-and-every question of the format "the best [thing where 'The X-Files' is a potential answer] of all time is..."
I'm sure one or some of these have been mentioned (you don't really expect me to read all that, right?) but how about TMNT, Cheers, and Captain Planet?
Airwolf.
It's the Fresh Prince. Hands down.
The rest are just battling for second place.
This was my first thought also. But I have to admit that Airwolf makes a good argument....
When it comes to the future, you can never have...
@jhinra Was in my head too much the other day. My fault for actually staying thru the whole 11 minutes.
toss up between A-team, Airwolf and Battlestar Galactica (the newer one, the theme song that started during season 2)
this one:
Fresh Prince for popularity hands down.
Knight Rider for most badass.
Dukes of Hazard for coolest.
Manimal for the win.
Out of this list, yeah, Fresh Prince the hands down winner, but that's mostly because theme songs that explicitly explain a show's premise are the best theme songs.
I submit Lidsville
and for no particular reason, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl
@mossygreen You win. We need more Sid and Marty Krofft.
Yeah...I'm a 70's baby so LAND of the LOST
@hippiechik My little sister (45) still gets annoyed when I make Sleestak noises at her to scare her like when we were kids.
@mehjohnson That raises the musical question: What's a sleestak?
The greatest ever!
@thejackalope he does have a song called knight Rider bhangra..
@thejackalope Also Timbaland and Magoo sample the song for "Clock Strikes"
Suicide is Painless - M*A*S*H
@KDemo This is EXACTLY what I came here to write, and here you had already written it. Top shelf, my friend. Best theme song of anything of any time of ever.
@shubydoo - But which was better, the movie or the TV theme? ;-)
@KDemo Yes.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (series)
No mentions of Friends or Seinfeld? Not even Full House or Growing Pains? Weird...
Also, I'm all for cheesy 80s themes like Mr. Belvedere and Family Ties.
New school themes include Breaking Bad and Sopranos.
@BillLehecka I was gonna go with Sopranos or The Wire, but they used real songs that already existed so I thought it was cheating.
"Gilligan's Island" is the theme song of all theme songs. Who here can recite both versions without Google?
@hchavers Isn't it just "and the rest" vs. "theprofessorandmaryann" (all jammed together) or was there more?
@hchavers or are you referring to it having an opening song and a closing song. Same tune, different lyrics.
@ParadisePete just those two. But you didn't recite the entire song. I am a little dissappointed.
@hchavers If I thought about it, I could probably get most of the theme song. I used to be able to recite it. Gilligan's Island also seems an appropriate choice given last night's FUKU event. A 3 hour click... A 3 hour click
@mediobarkre you get the prize! @Barney, tell the man about the color purple.
So join us here each week my friend your sure to catch a smile from 7 stranded castaways here on Gilligans Isle.
@hchavers @mediobarkre I love purple.
Believe it or not, The Greatest American Hero had the best song. Well, catchy, anyway.
@ParadisePete
@ParadisePete I thought that "Believe it or not" was orginally radio hit, then adapted to the show. This would disqualify it as a "theme" song.
@hchavers Nope. It was one of relatively few TV themes to be a hit record (compared to the large number of movie songs that do), but it was a theme song first before becoming a hit.
@ParadisePete that's what I came to say. It's hands down the best.
"Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me."
@ParadisePete I came here to post this here. I'm glad I wasn't first.
@ParadisePete I knew my fellow mehions wouldn't let me down on this one. This was the best by far.
I've never even seen this show but it's a beautiful song:
Runner-up second place would be "Far From Any Road" by The Handsome Family, which is the theme to American Detective.
http://www.youtube.com/#/watch?v=d-6k_NHP0II
I'm an old fart, and my fave is "Hill Street Blues." In fact, thinking about themes has left me ready to sit for a HSB marathon. ( And "Rockford Files" wasn't bad, neither.)
Sorry, try again.
@2many2no Do what now?...I KNOW, I KNOW.....do what now?
Man, there are lots of good ones that I had forgotten about, but I'm just going to go and mention my personal favorite: Barney Miller. Personal favorite meaning I've actually downloaded the file and have had it on my devices fir years.
@ronnyd I played bass in my junior high jazz band in 1977-78. At least once a week someone would say "Hey! Play Barney Miller!"
@SSteve There's just something about it. Love it! And, yes, the bass line kicks butt!!
Saved by the bell, anyone?
Magnum, PI, hands down. But then again, I'm old and partial to Mike Post. He had a lot of great themes but this was his best IMNSHO.
I may never get a Fukubukuro, but you can't take the sky from me.
Ballad of Serenity, from Firefly
@PocketBrain Absolutely
Where is Buck Rodgers when you need em?
@sp3ar
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Opening and Closing Theme from TeeVees Greatest on Vimeo.
@The_Baron Lol forgot about lambchop! We are old?
@mehjohnson I was a teenager when Lambchop was on. I just remember this song coming on and having to quickly change the channel. "Crap, It's stuck in my head again"
@The_Baron Is that song still going on?
@TaRDy Only if Shari Lewis wound up in hell.
@SSteve This is the song they play on repeat in hell. Every 100 cycles, they toss on some Rebecca Black.
@neuromancer Good one. That movie was awesome when I was eleven.
@neuromancer Related, Queen made the best theme songs
@PocketBrain That movie is awesome right now.
@The_Baron i almost have princes of the universe memorized. i know all the words... just can never get them in the right order.
@katylava Same here. I always start, "I AM IMMORTAL..oh, wait"
@The_Baron I HAVE INSIDE ME BLOOD OF KINGS I HAVE NO RIVAL NO MAN CAN BE MY EQUAL... okay i'll stop now
Hawaii 5-0 got them all beat.
@Deanmeh McGarret was the man. Started the term "five-o" for cops of course. I put effort into hitting the high note on 5th-6th grade trumpet.
@thejackalope I'm sure autocorrect changed "Cake" to "Cream", right?
@SSteve No, actually. I just made that post pre-coffee... Thanks for the correction!
@thejackalope I love Cake! And I might have to second your idea just because of the blonde.
@thejackalope there's a part of the song where i like to vocalize the instrumentation as "banana-nut". it amuses me.
The Theme Song to The Gary Shandling Show is hard to beat.
@belzarak Sounds like Perd Hapley wrote that one.
Really? Sanford & Son for the win.
Bramp bramp bramp brant-uh-brump.
A-TEAM all the way. Not even close.
Several favorites have already been listed here, but I have to add:
I know this dates me... but...
Peter Gunn
@TimWalter Peter Gunn is really and truly one of the great theme songs, and just a great song in general. If you have Amazon Prime, a soundtrack album is availble in Prime Music (also Mr. Lucky Goes Latin).
I don't have any favorite theme. There are no good themes! I hate you all! Where's my bag? Where are my carrots?
... alright, fine. The A-Team theme.
It hasn't been mentioned yet? I am disappointed in all of you.
Guile's Theme
Gotta give some love to Twin Peaks.
I was in a band in the late 90s that would occasionally throw in the themes from King of the Hill or South Park. (I love me some Primus.)
@SSteve Primus sucks.
Best childhood memory theme songs:
@phatmass I loved when Mister Rogers introduced the band.
Excuse me but.. Walker - Texas Ranger Theme Song
@PacoTLM did yo uknow the ACTUAL Texas Ranger musem in Waco, has a whole (maybe 10x20) room devoted to that show, with lots of Memoribilia and props on display? (Behind Glass, on Loan From Chuck Himself)
OK, I wrote this poll, and I knew I'd have to leave some classics out... but how did I forget this?
@JasonToon Thank you for using the Proper Version, before Joel Left.
So help me, I'm hearing "Winky Dink and You" in my head. This is as Meh as it gets, I think. I have an original, never-used Winky Dink kit, with the screen & everything. It ranks right up there with the fuku bags as a treat I treasure.
And then there was "It's Howdy Doody Time" ...
And this? I'm sorry, you guys. I let you all down.
@JasonToon Don't feel sorry. I keep having more awesome theme songs pop into my head. Like this:
@JasonToon And this:
@JasonToon And this (this one almost made me cry-maybe I'm working too hard):
@JasonToon which, of course, leads to this:
@JasonToon They just weren't ready for a comedic western, so this didn't last long:
@SSteve Dang! I'd forgotten F Troop
Wow. There were so many awesome theme songs back in the day.
WAIT! how could we forget Automan??
@carl669
@rockblossom Manimal:
When I'm exercising, the best theme song is the theme from S.W.A.T.
@SSteve Ha! If you could see me, you would know there's no way I have a "fitness thing". I only exercise to maintain enough strength to lift beer bottles. :-)
@parodymandotcom You get the best exercise if you lift growlers.
@SSteve You are my guru.
Married with children has to be up near the top and also The facts of life!
Not a TV show, just a way of life
FYI everyone, I fear we've all revealed our ages in this thread. And entertained the NSA while doing so.
I'm a little surprised that no-one nominated The Monkees
Monkees Theme song
@kaighintze Yep. That's how it happens. All of a sudden one more pops into your head and you say "I can't believe I didn't think of this one!!" Case in point: Danny Bonaduce is one of the significant factors in why I play bass.
@kaighintze And this: Floyd is another reason why I play bass.
Mission Impossible is also up there
S.W.A.T. from the 70's.
Green Acres:
@mediobarkre Of course that brings this to mind: There's Uncle Joe he's doin’ lots of blow at the Junction.
@mediobarkre I love purple.
Snaaaaark!
Fraggle Rock. Nuff said
@jchristner Ha! I can't belive I forgot Fraggle Rock!. I'm changing my vote.
My wife reminded me of this one:
Our friend Peter has the biggest crush on Barbara Feldon.
I need to go to bed. Otherwise I'd just sit here and think of more and more. Especially since my wife is in on it now.
Ok, just one more. This is the last one for the night, I swear.
@SSteve I think that just broke me out of this funk I've been in all day. So, thanks!
@Kleineleh Always remember: Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snorky are always there for you.
Batman, the Animated Series
Also up there with the best
@duodec YES!!! Written By Danny Elfman, who also scored the Michael Keaton/Tim Burton Batman Movies(and most of the rest of Burton's Movies).And Of course, the Simpsons Theme. also, a Member of Oingo Boingo. and married to Bridget Fonda.
Fraggle Rock
I was just discussing this with a friend today. Some have already been mentioned. I just want to add Rockford Files. the Andy Griffith Show, Dallas, Little House on the Prairie, LA Law, thirtysomething, St Elsewhere, Miami Vice.
Not saying it's one of the bestest ever, but certainly one that's spent the most Time clawing at my brain...
Dare I start with cartoons? Speed Racer, Magilla Gorilla, Underdog, Tennessee Tuxedo, Flintstones, Jetsons. You could keep going...
@readnj I was thinking about The Jetsons too. That has a tremendous band arrangement.
@readnj hong kong phooey if we're going cartoons
how could i forget Spectreman!?!
Anyone remember 'Gimme a Break!"? I loved that show!
Pink Panther. And yes, I like purple too.
Is there anyone who can't "do-do-do-do-do-do-do" etcetera to the Jeopardy theme song?
