@matthew Oh sure, we can only be one or the other. But I'm with you, Neverending Story definitely qualifies and I'd pick it over any of that lame shit.
While I think Weird Science, can't be debated, this did remind me of Revenge of the Nerd II: Nerds in Paradise. They stayed at the Hotel Coral Essex, but, in order to gain popularity there, they messed with the sign, much to everyone's amusement:
The Last Starfighter. I even remember commenting when I saw it that it was the nerd dream come true: that being the expert in a video game made you a (for real) fighter pilot hero, rather than the pathetic looser everyone else saw.
Picture a boy whose goal in life is to get into Princeton University. He's a member of the school's Future Enterprisers and he is always prepared for class.
I picked the only one I'd ever heard of. Seems like I need to brush up on 80s nerd movies.
Perhaps not a wish-fulfillment movie technically . . . but my favorite movie from the 80's with a nerd.
Chicks cannot hold their smoke, dat's what it is.
The Wizard

Back to the Future and BttF II
Time machines and hoverboards, dammit!
Oh sure, only STEM dorks can be nerds, no love for the humanities nerd at the center of The Neverending Story, I see how it is

@matthew Have you seen Ruby Sparks? It works too. And I liked it.
@matthew Also, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Okay, actually, I realize Perks doesn't quite fit wish fulfillment. I got carried away.
Zapped!
@jsmccloy I'd agree if they hadn't used a body double for Heather Thomas.
Any movie with Kelly LeBroc gets my vote!
Nerds creating a woman and then dating the high school prom queens after their bullies get their comeuppance? No other choices needed!

Goonies.
Revenge of the nerds would be a much better movie without that whole rape thing. ..
Had totally forgotten "My Science Project".
Pretty in Pink
@AnnaB watched that last night!
@hollboll it's a great movie!
The Last Starfighter. I even remember commenting when I saw it that it was the nerd dream come true: that being the expert in a video game made you a (for real) fighter pilot hero, rather than the pathetic looser everyone else saw.
And that would be "loser" of course. Typos hide themselves until the edit time has expired. I blame the scapegoat.
Arguably, the X-Men franchise are totally about nerds.
I'm sorry, I got myself all worked up and forgot about the timeframe and one of the criteria. Damnit. I'm walking away now.

His name is Joel Goodsen.
Manhattan Project?! That wins.
Lucas.
