Stupid things to be excited about
8Me? I’m super excited that the Movies! TV Network (digital, free, not everywhere but some places) is showing the 1941 Joan Crawford movie A Woman’s Face tonight at 9:20 central. I haven’t seen it in about 25 years, but still reference/mock it regularly! It’s the movie that made me fall in love with Conrad Veidt! He’s so evil and charming! He has a moustache! Will it hold up? I don’t know, but I’m going to find out. Can you watch it? https://moviestvnetwork.com/wheretowatch/
I also found a light bulb to replace the burnt-out one in the refrigerator, so didn’t have to make a special trip anywhere, threw out some garbage I should have gotten rid of a couple of years ago and had an excellent pizza for dinner. It’s been a pretty good day! How was yours?

@mossygreen How bizarre! I read the above at exactly 9:20 Central! But I think that channel is the one I can theoretically get but my TV refuses to add.
@ThunderChicken Weird! I’m almost glad you don’t get it because I got the time wrong and it actually started 10 minutes earlier.
Nope it’s another channel I don’t get, I wonder if it’s streaming anywhere?
You actually found a refrigerator bulb in your house? You must be way more organized than me, nice job!
@sammydog01 I found a 40 watt bulb that fits, I assure you I am not more organized than anyone, ever.
Turns out A Woman’s Face is streaming on youtube! Background: it is the tale of a woman with a hideous scar that has turned her against society and who makes a living through blackmail. She meets a sexy sociopath, and then a kind plastic surgeon, and she’s on trial for something, but we don’t know what exactly as everything is told in flashback. Conrad Veidt is great. Melvyn Douglas is Melvin Douglas. Joan Crawford is super intense.
@mossygreen @sammydog01 Cool! I have been trying to find out when it will next show on TCM, but their search keeps spinning.
@mossygreen THANK YOU!
@mossygreen @sammydog01 difficult to compare from a phone screen, but that YouTube version looks so much crisper than the “Movies!” channel we get OTA. The local affiliate only gives this sub-channel 2.2 barely enough bandwidth so that just enough folks find the fuzzy resolution tolerable.
But still more watchable than the affiliate who carries “thisTV“ sub-channel 4.2 - even fuzzier!
@mossygreen @sammydog01 looks like it will be on Movies! Dec 10, 13, and 17.
@mossygreen @RedOak I just watched it on Youtube. Thanks for the link, it was really good. Keep the recommendations coming!
@RedOak @sammydog01 Yay!
I also had a nice day and, like @mossygreen, it was partly due to pizza. I like to get pizza delivered in, but recently the order minimums for delivery have been increased so high that it doesn’t make sense for me unless I have company. As of today, however, DoorDash added a new pizza place and there is a promo for free delivery, and no order minimum. With DoorDash’s fee (reduced because I have DashPass) and a tip for the driver, it was still quite reasonable. So, pizza, YAY!
@ThunderChicken Mine was partly due to a calzone. There is a great pizza place right by my job.
@ThunderChicken @yakkoTDI Pizza AND calzones! Truly this is the best of all possible worlds right now.
Isn’t he in casablanca? I can’t look it up right now.
the name seems awfully familiar.
/youtube there are no Waters in Casablanca
@f00l Yup.
@f00l He mostly played Nazis and creeps!

@mossygreen
I’ve read that most of the actors playing Nazis in Casablanca were actually Jewish refugees who escaped the Nazi regime and come to Hollywood
the studios were anxious to give them work and created roles for them but since it was the war a lot of the roles were for Nazis because these refugees could get the accents right
and the refugees were happy enough to take the work and get the very nice pay
It was much better than being in a death camp
@f00l Very, very true. Veidt wasn’t Jewish, but was married to a Jewish woman when they fled Germany. He was also vehemently anti-Nazi and probably on their shit-list anyway as an artist.
@f00l @mossygreen
Man… he would make a GREAT Joker!
@chienfou @f00l @mossygreen He was the inspiration for the Joker:

@f00l @mossygreen Veidt’s appearance in The Man Who Laughs was the basis of DC’s Joker. You can really see it in that picture.
@f00l @mossygreen I just started watching and Reginald Owen is in it too!

TIL !
My day wasn’t bad. I found my gutter clips so I was finally able to put up my icicle lights.
I bought so many icicle lights on clearance for super cheap last year that I was also able to decorate the boat that my brother stores in my driveway.
I still have enough to go around the side of my house but that would entail using the extension ladder and frankly, that scares me. I really need to put in permanent hooks so I could use my extension pole thing to put the side of the house up.
I still have some work to do but the weather is fairly decent so I should finish this weekend.
One of my neighbors was also putting up lights at the same time. I hope they enjoyed listening to the music I was playing on a speaker outside while I worked.
@RiotDemon you have a portable speaker? Where did you get it?
@RedOak believe it or not, I only bought one speaker from here, but I have been given a few in IRKs… But I did not use one. My Christmas lights actually have a speaker. Convenient.
@RedOak @RiotDemon
Pix?
@f00l @RedOak not quite ready yet. I just spent another two hours tonight weaseling more stuff out of my attic and putting out more lights.
I’ll probably start a new thread once I’m done if there isn’t a thread yet.
@RiotDemon I’m waiting until the temp drops below freezing so I can enjoy the annual frost-bitten fingers routine.
Today I had a fresh baked piece of bread with yesterday’s advent calendar jam (mango-peach-lime) on one half and today’s advent calendar jam (seedless raspberry) on the other. It was exciting.
@sammydog01
something to munch on while you open the NB4C calendar??
I actually have two sets of lights I bought many moons ago at Big Lots that has several smallish disk speakers incorporated in the string. Can’t say how good they are as they are still in the box in my shop…Maybe one day…
@chienfou Ah, I miss Big Lots. It’s still around, but less convenient and a shadow of its former self.
@mossygreen
we have a Big Lots in Montgomery that has moved at least 4 times that I can think of. But it will most likely stay (somewhere) in town since they have a big-ass distribution center here.
