I had some SteelSeries headphones, loved them until the detachable parts broke and the internal wiring failed. Using some logitechs at the moment. 1 year in, so far so good.
@dougbaker45 SteelSeries is pretty well known for gaming peripherals. But then again, the only product I've bought from them is a mouse pad. So who knows.
@dougbaker45 $44 is quite reasonable for a headset with mic especially steel series. If you want to go dirt cheap buy a clip on mic for about $6 and use what ever sound to ear hole device you have already.
@dougbaker45 I own the regular edition 7H and they're fantastic. Bought this one which I'll use and I'll give my kids the regular one. The price is amazing. I bought the regular edition for over $100 a couple years ago.
@username Uhm... No. I think you're looking at the end that connects to the headset. This looks to split out to two 3.5mm jacks. Pretty standard stuff.
@username As @tranadra says, two 3.5mm jacks + extension cable. One plugs into headphone hole, the other into microphone hole. EDIT: Wait, no, sorry. You said headset end, but I didn't catch that and apparently @tranadra didn't either. Micro USB it is, but I'm curious how it affects the overall audio quality since aux > USB, typically.
@mehgrl I understand. I haven't purchased since the Helicopters on 1/26 and I'm starting to get antsy and going through withdrawal. Such a waste of free VMP!
The 7H versions aren't very good. I had 5Hv2's for the longest time, and when they finally gave out I went with a 7H. I had them crap out on me multiple times, and their customer service wasn't very good.
@Yakuman Why not? Better audio quality in and out like that, though I'm not sure if it matters with this anyway as it leads into the micro USB into the headset.
@Oldude I've been trying to absolutely confirm that this will work on the XB1 with the oh-so-horribly-mandatory-purchase of the MS adapter, but nothing concrete so far. It looks like it should work with a Y adapter.
If I buy it can you guarantee you'll send me the wrong headphones the first time, then send me the right ones and not ask for me to return the first pair, like when the Razer headset was on sale?
Do want. But I already have and use daily a perfectly good Siberia headset that I got on clearance. It doesn't need to be replaced, though I've loved both Steelseries headsets I've had so far. Why 2? One has a mic, one doesn't. Both equally great sound.
I bet these are great headphones. If I wasn't still paying off Christmas presents I bought, I'd buy them. I know I can't sleep on it--by the morning, they'll be gone.
Certain things labeled "gaming" are typically are not worthwhile, like headsets. Steel Series is not an audio oriented company, buying their headsets when there's companies like Sennheiser that are audio oriented is simply paying for a cute paint job rather than quality. The drivers on this headset are not the best and the microphone has complaints in the review. Skip this, get Sennheiser PC 161 for the same price with much clearer sound stage and head space (which is what you want for a gaming headset, to hear things that are left, right of your position).
@antsam999 Yeah, of course Sennheiser are better, but these are over ear. Those ones you linked are on ear and get uncomfortable after long hour gaming sessions. I could care less about audio quality in the long run as I couldn't tell the difference between the two. I care about comfort. These are comfortable.
I have heard good things about their $300 wireless headsets, including the fact that they have swappable batteries and the nice display on the transmitter end, but I haven't heard a peep about their lower end units. I think I have enough headsets right now though. I don't need more wired ones.
The Amazon review that helped me the most is the one that says that these headphones are way too small.
My first question when I see a headset for sale is, "will it fit my gigantic noggin?" In my experience, the answer is usually, "no."
I currently use a Turtle Beach XL1 headset with my Xbox 360. It won't win awards, but does fit comfortably with room to spare.
If anyone knows of a make and model of headset that is designed to fit Andre the Giant's head, drop me the deets. (That's what the gamer kids say, right?)
I have another pair of Steel Series headphones purchased from the original deal a day site, and they are quite nice. They are the kind that do not block out meat space noises. The self adjusting cable system works well for me and the cables are durable (even though the kids tended to chew on them... wtf?).
@thewynner Do they? How so? I just connect my headphones to my PS4 using the 3.5mm jack in the bottom of the controller and it works fine. This one apparently has 2x 3.5mm though, which is confusing.
Meh, you almost got me. I do a lot of conference calls and VTCs via computer and need a good set of headphones-plus-mic. But needs to be USB or single-jack for the Macbook Air. I guess I could buy an adapter of some kind but that just adds to cost and complexity. Still looking for the perfect solution at a reasonable price.
If only they were bluetooth with noise cancellation, and $10 cheaper! And if they gave back rubs... Where's my latte, dammit?! Looks like a legit deal, but no, I can't justify it, despite them being orange and in a box. Thanks, meh.
Re "Other, which I will tell you in the comments": Does demanding that my children play games, e.g. Grave and Sunless Sea, in the living room so that I can watch count?
$$169.00 on a site I googled.. In for 2. I have Turtle Beach Earforce x11. Only problem I had with those, was my old comp didn't have an optical port. They wanted about 25+ for an adapter, so I put em away till I got a new comp. Everything dies after awhile, so I will have these waiting in the wings for WOW, and Son will get a new set.. Maybe he could start earning shit for himself?? Someday?..lol MEH
Already have Turtle Beach, sucka's! It allows me to play Grand Theft Auto V without my kids hearing all the N-bombs and all, and I love em. If you got kids.... and a naggy wife that doesn't appreciate a well placed N-bomb on a Sunday Morning, well, then you NEED these phones, and at this price, I suppose I would buy them if it were not for my Turtles.
I had a Steel Series I think I got from woot years ago - they were excellent, comfortable headsets. Closed the cord in a card door and dragged the ends for a few miles down the road once and that was that.
That being said, its interesting that only 386 of these have sold - compared to the 355 Meeps yesterday that had sold by this point in the day. Are these just as bad? Cost too much? Why is there not a groundswell of people buying these if they are as terrible as the Meeps?
I wonder which item Meh considers more of a success?
So these just delivered, and at first I thought the fact that the headband part can come separated from each ear piece was kinda cool. But then i realized only one side goes back in. The part that clips into the ear piece came pre-worn out and it keeps falling off. Seems like a terrible way to build something. They sounds decent though so i currently have to jam a piece of paper to make the clip part hold the earpiece onto the headband.
@dholster Same issue. Had to bend the tab outward get it to catch properly. Also, the mic on these is truly terrible - one of the worst mics I have ever had the misfortune of using. Audio is good otherwise.
Other than the clip issue on one of my two pairs, I like these headsets. I have the V2 as well, which is more open so the sound is different, but these are very good for a closed back set. My Sennheiser 518's and 598's sound cleaner but lack the obviously hyped lower end on these. I must say I almost prefer these over the Sen's for more modern music. Haven't used the mic's yet, but if they are the same as the V2 they should be fine as my family only uses them in their own rooms with doors closed, so noise canceling isn't really pertinent.

hmmm, are these good? i like the way they look! but hmm, do i really need more headphones?
@rmf83 Doggammit 159.8 lbsou. Always. Need. More. Headphones.
meatspace noise
@Mehntok For all you NOVAHOT Deckers out there...
I have the Steelseries Siberia V2 headphones and absolutely LOVE them. Also, Fuck.
@BootlegCraig Yeah my Navi branded Siberias are suddenly looking long in the tooth...
@BootlegCraig
Know if they work well for the PS4?
The description says they are black and yellow, but the photos show they are orange. Why are you lying to me, Meh?
@peaceetc Amazon says orange. To my eye it's in the yellow-orange range.
@peaceetc Did you not read the heading that says "Don't believe a word we say"?
@peaceetc My family always argues with me that school buses are orange. I'm positive they are yellow. What say Meh?
@whtthfgg I read it, but I didn't believe it.
I want the eyepatch!
Xbox master race
@RicoSuave We're all gamers... Howbout just Gaming Master Race? I play just about everything lets take the prejudice out of gaming :)
@Pandumonium I love GabeN
MEEP U L8R!
@ACraigL That caught me completely by surprise and made me laugh a whole lot. Well done!
I had some SteelSeries headphones, loved them until the detachable parts broke and the internal wiring failed. Using some logitechs at the moment. 1 year in, so far so good.
I'll buy it for $30 ya chumps
@thechinglish $30-35 would be a nobrainer.
Meh, I already have a headset
Will I get more headshots with these?
@GiantTarget Yes, but you would need the optional Selfie Stick.
It looks like it would be great for my online classes but the price is still a little high for a unknown brand.
@dougbaker45 SteelSeries isn't an unknown brand at all.
@dougbaker45 SteelSeries is pretty well known for gaming peripherals. But then again, the only product I've bought from them is a mouse pad. So who knows.
@dougbaker45 Steelseries is well respected
@TornadoTexan How did it sound? Did it produce a lot of bass?
I'm just kidding, I know a mousepad wouldn't produce a lot of bass.
@tranadra I dunno... most of the sounds are pretty flat.
@TornadoTexan Hahaha!
I bought the regular edition for over $100 a couple years ago.
that looks like some sort of proprietary connector on the headset end. kinda sucks, it seems.
@username Think it might actually be micro USB.
Maybe. If I hadn't already wasted money on the TOCCs.
@twobears a damn waste of money.
Id totally buy this if it was ~$10 cheaper maybe. meh
Well on my way to a month full of Meh faces.
@mehgrl I understand. I haven't purchased since the Helicopters on 1/26 and I'm starting to get antsy and going through withdrawal. Such a waste of free VMP!
@Superjimtendo Another senseless victim of VMP
Actually tempting... But I shouldn't.
The 7H versions aren't very good. I had 5Hv2's for the longest time, and when they finally gave out I went with a 7H. I had them crap out on me multiple times, and their customer service wasn't very good.
Nice, I love my Siberia V2, but currently rocking astro a50's
This is a great deal. Too bad I just bought some nice headphones otherwise I would bite on this.
REALLY tempting... though if anyone wants to send me a pair, be my guest ;)
@KamiLotus Sure. Give me your address. There's no way this plan could go wrong. Mwahahaha
@tranadra baahahahha. Definitely no way it'll go wrong! Haha
eye mehtch..
They're probably awesome, but if they connect with two 3.5 mm jacks instead of USB, I can't do it.
@Yakuman It does, the USB connection it to the headset itself https://res.cloudinary.com/mediocre/image/upload/c_pad,f_auto,bo_100px_solid_white,h_1200,q_80,w_1200/byotpmceqfuvitpa2vwz.jpg
@Yakuman They appear to be the standard 7H and not 7H USB, so only two 3.5 mm jacks.
@Yakuman Why not? Better audio quality in and out like that, though I'm not sure if it matters with this anyway as it leads into the micro USB into the headset.
Won't work with a laptop or phone that has a combined 3.5mm port (you'd need an adapter like http://www.amazon.com/Exclusives%C2%AE-Headset-3-5mm-Smartphone-Adapter/dp/B00D6NPH88)
Looks like these put the 'irate' in 'pirate'.
WILL THESE WORK WITH PS3??
AS WELL AS XBOX ONE???
@Oldude I've been trying to absolutely confirm that this will work on the XB1 with the oh-so-horribly-mandatory-purchase of the MS adapter, but nothing concrete so far. It looks like it should work with a Y adapter.
@Lotsofgoats did you ever get these to work with the Xbox one? Got audio but no mic
If I buy it can you guarantee you'll send me the wrong headphones the first time, then send me the right ones and not ask for me to return the first pair, like when the Razer headset was on sale?
I can't find the N. The fnatic logo has an f, an a, a t, an I, and a c in it--but I don't see an n. For this reason alone, I'm out.
Shit. But I do love my v2's. And have kids I can give these to.
merry-sedate-pigeon
Thanks meh.
I suppose I should be thankful that there hasn't been anything I like lately... but everyday I'm still a little disappointed. Oh well.
Side note: anyone need a neoprene Kindle case?
@camille anyone need eight of the exact same neoprene kindle case? ;(
Do want. But I already have and use daily a perfectly good Siberia headset that I got on clearance. It doesn't need to be replaced, though I've loved both Steelseries headsets I've had so far. Why 2? One has a mic, one doesn't. Both equally great sound.
How long until the 9H show up??
they are orange too
Can I use it in the bath?
@elkinsd Yes. But not if you put water in the tub.
Orange is the new purple.
latest-pointless-platypus ... and wife approved! The detachable cord is actually what sold it for me. I tend to kill headset cords every year or so.
Maybe if I didn't have my PC350SE.
Wife bought me a pair of Turtle Beach Ear Force P12's for our anniversary (1/31), so meh.
@festercluck I'm sorry.
I don't have time for gaming ....meh
Bath
Also like many have said I would be in at $35 maybe.
@Troyaof yup these are about $10 to $15 too high. At $30 I'd have grabbed 2. Maybe Meh will just breakdown and sell more knives this week.
Any know who these dismantle into four pieces? Would it be something I could easily take on a plane to silence the noise from the meatspace in a tube?
I bet these are great headphones. If I wasn't still paying off Christmas presents I bought, I'd buy them. I know I can't sleep on it--by the morning, they'll be gone.
@wew Wrongo keebler- they're still here, but if you wait 4 more hours they'll be gone...
Double Dog Meh!
If I hadn't just bought a new Gamecom 788 a few weeks ago to replace my old broken headset, I would've definitely gave these a try.
Certain things labeled "gaming" are typically are not worthwhile, like headsets. Steel Series is not an audio oriented company, buying their headsets when there's companies like Sennheiser that are audio oriented is simply paying for a cute paint job rather than quality. Are these wireless?
@Sprits They're wireless until you plug in the wire that makes them work.
@SSteve Awesome!
I have heard good things about their $300 wireless headsets, including the fact that they have swappable batteries and the nice display on the transmitter end, but I haven't heard a peep about their lower end units. I think I have enough headsets right now though. I don't need more wired ones.
Nay
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
The Amazon review that helped me the most is the one that says that these headphones are way too small.

If anyone knows of a make and model of headset that is designed to fit Andre the Giant's head, drop me the deets. (That's what the gamer kids say, right?)
@sjk3 I have a big head and I am in the photo at the end. They fit fine to me, big mellon and all. Unless you are the Jack-in-the-box Jack guy....
I have another pair of Steel Series headphones purchased from the original deal a day site, and they are quite nice. They are the kind that do not block out meat space noises. The self adjusting cable system works well for me and the cables are durable (even though the kids tended to chew on them... wtf?).
Would this work with PS4? I've never bought a headset before, and I'm not really sure how to determine if these things work with my console...
@Mononon Google it.
@Mononon Out of the box, no they will not. They only have 3.5 mm jacks for connection, most PS4/XBone require a USB connection.
@thewynner Do they? How so? I just connect my headphones to my PS4 using the 3.5mm jack in the bottom of the controller and it works fine. This one apparently has 2x 3.5mm though, which is confusing.
@ThorsBanHammer As usual. a snarky, dickheaded response when someone asks a gaming question.
@Mononon I think this FAQ is somewhat related. There is no adapter included to turn the two 3.5 mm plugs (sound/voice) into one that contains them both. http://faq.steelseries.com/questions/270/Will+the+SteelSeries+USB+soundcard+or+7H+soundcard+work+for+the+SteelSeries+7H+for+iDevices%3F There may be an adapter you could purchase, but I do not know off hand of one.
@thewynner Thank you for the clarification -- I wondered about the difference, in reference to the conference call comment below...
Will you price match a totally different product that I bought off ebay? If so, i'll buy 2!!
If only they were bluetooth with noise cancellation, and $10 cheaper! And if they gave back rubs... Where's my latte, dammit?!
Looks like a legit deal, but no, I can't justify it, despite them being orange and in a box. Thanks, meh.
first purchase on meh, first headset. Coincidence, who knows.
I'm confused...how are these supposed to help me snowblow my driveway?
@Yakroot they protect your hearing whilst you're operating the snow blower.
Any gamer worth his salt probably has a headset already. I'm not a huge fan of steel series, but they aren't a terrible. brand.
Re "Other, which I will tell you in the comments": Does demanding that my children play games, e.g. Grave and Sunless Sea, in the living room so that I can watch count?
I've had a set of these for years, and just replaced them (Damn you Meh! ... too late!!!) They are great!
$$169.00 on a site I googled.. In for 2. I have Turtle Beach Earforce x11. Only problem I had with those, was my old comp didn't have an optical port. I wonder which item Meh considers more of a success?
@ilovereality maybe if we could root the headphones to run a native Netflix client they'd sell out.
After looking this up and reading about the siberia, I went with the siberia v2. Seems to have less issues than this one.
i want JBL!!
So these just delivered, and at first I thought the fact that the headband part can come separated from each ear piece was kinda cool. But then i realized only one side goes back in. The part that clips into the ear piece came pre-worn out and it keeps falling off. Seems like a terrible way to build something.
