Spooky Goat day eleven! SPOOKY RADIO
8SPOOKY RADIO!
When I was a little girl my mother made sure we knew about the Old Time Radio of her childhood, helped immeasurably by the weekly radio program Those Were the Days, hosted by Chuck Schaden on a local classical music station every Saturday afternoon. The weekend before Halloween, he always did a special episode featuring scary radio shows and an episode-long narrative where ghosts were taking over the studio (it was special effects records and Ken Alexander doing voice impressions). I loved it.
Here are a handful of classic OTR scary shows.
Suspense, The Hitchhiker (you might remember The Twilight Zone episode)
Suspense, The 32nd of December
Suspense, The Thing in the Window
Arch Oboler’s LIGHTS OUT, The Dark
Inner Sanctum, Corridor of Doom
Inner Sanctum, The Wailing Wall
Escape, Three Skeleton Key

I’ll try again later but I could never get into listening to these. Heck, I don’t even like listening to audio books!
I love old time radio and have been listening ever since I got my first iPod. Now it’s on Sirius in my car. The ones that really scare me are Lights Out and Nightfall.
Forgot to mention I listened to CBS Radio Mystery theater in high school. I usually fell asleep before the ending though.
@sammydog01 Lights Out is pure, efficient horror. Everything else tries to gussie it up. I have never listened to Nightfall, I’ll have to check it out!
Stephen King’s “The Mist”

I bought this on cassette probably 25 years ago from a company that specialized in audio plays. I can’t remember the name of it, but it was the early-ish days of Internet ordering, pre-dating Amazon’s dominance. Ahh, the good ol’ days!
