@Kyeh@zhicks1987 I am recovering now from a Bee sting to my lower eyelid. This happened on the 4th of July, and it is still a problem. The sting site became infected and traveled into my eye and down my face into my lymph nodes in my neck. It got just to the point of Necrosis, and I was in risk of losing my eye and permanent deformity of my face. Luckily the doc found the right antibiotic and gave me a big shot along with a prescription of oral antibiotic. It’s going away now and I’m out of the woods for losing my eye and deformity of face.
@Kyeh@Star2236@zhicks1987 It was just my luck. I’ve been stung by most every insect capable of stinging. What I have learned is that insects can carry some nasty bacteria and their stinger can infect you when they sting. I also had to get a Tetanus vaccine because those little guys are capable of spreading that too.
@accelerator@Kyeh@zhicks1987
Well glad your face is doing better and you better throw some quarters (skip the Pennie’s) into the next fountain you see wishing you don’t get stung again.
@somf69 Wow, that brings back memories! We had that on one of those cheesy compilation albums put out by K-Tel records in the 70s. Those were the days, to quote that great philosopher, Archibald Bunker.
@detailer Funny you ask, i was trying to find the album to see if i remembered some other songs on it. The ones you mentioned sound familiar, esp Brand-New Key, but i couldn’t find an album online with those together. I found one that has a few songs that seemed to fit but others that didn’t, so I’m not sure if this is the one. I know K-Tel was always putting out new combos using the same songs on multiple albums, so who knows
@ircon96@Kyeh I agree with you both. It was reported that Keith Richards became nauseaous for several days upon hearing her remake/release of Ruby Tuesday.
@ircon96@Kyeh I agree with you both. It was reported that Keith Richards became nauseaous for several days upon hearing her remake/release of Ruby Tuesday
@Kyeh Because I find them one of nature’s most skilled architects and they are fascinating to watch. Wasps recognize faces and will not bother people they do not perceive as a threat.
@PooltoyWolf Interesting! I find them around here fairly often; they especially like a shed in my yard. I leave them alone unless they try to build a nest right over my doors or patio. I know they kill other undesirable bugs.
@Kyeh Wasps are also pollinators, though not as prolifically as honeybees. Most stings happen when someone surprises the wasps, as in accidentally uncovering a nest at close range. Not fun!
@PooltoyWolf I didn’t know they were pollinators. That’s cool.
I was once carrying a large (36" x 24") metal drawer from some flat files; I was going down some outside stairs from someone’s upstairs studio. A wasp stung me on the back of my left hand - and then the back of my right hand! And I couldn’t let go of this huge metal drawer so I just kept on going! Of course once I reached the ground I put the drawer down but that was crazy.
@Kyeh@PooltoyWolf I once was cutting up a downed tree in our woods with a chainsaw. I didn’t realize that there was a wasp nest in it until Bam! Bam! - stung in the back of the head. I dropped the saw and ran, but they followed me for over 100 yards. Some got inside my shirt. When I finally got clear, I counted 13 stings on my head, neck and shoulders. I did not sleep well that night - difficult to find a comfortable position. I went back the next day to retrieve the chainsaw and left the tree alone after that.
I really hate wasps.
@Kyeh@macromeh@PooltoyWolf The “defending their home” thing is understandable, but i think of that as applying more to honeybees, they do what’s necessary, then back off. Wasps go full-on vendetta like the Mafia, like they’re trying to make an example out of you… And they don’t even have delicious honey to protect!
@Kyeh@PooltoyWolf The grizzlies comment was about the critically acclaimed Werner Herzog documentary, "Grizzly Man from 2005, i highly recommend it. I saw it years ago & it’s stuck with me. It’s about a naive, idealistic activist & his girlfriend who went to live amongst the grizzlies in the Alaskan wilderness & ended up being fatally mauled by the bears they loved & whom they thought loved them back. The most haunting part is knowing what happened to the couple, then seeing the footage they filmed themselves used in the film. It’s available for free right now on Tubi, Pluto & Plex.
A spider bite for me is rare, and when it’s happened it’s generally been mostly just itchy. (Though I know there are some kinds that can be very deadly.)
Wasps hurt much more, but still not incredibly bad, especially compared to say fire ants. And mostly wasps are not aggressive around me if I don’t mess with their nests. I usually ignore them when we pass.
On the other hand, I’ve really gotten some very painful stings from yellow jackets. Once got two stings about two inches apart on my stomach after one flew inside my shirt while I was pruning some bushes that I didn’t realize had a nest of the damn things. That was years ago. But the last sting from one was just a few weeks ago while on my back deck. Felt a sudden pain like somebody had stuck a pen knife into my back. Coward got me from behind. Found they had been building a nest in scaffolding I had by my deck. Wasp spray took care of that, but I had a large bump on my back that was sore for almost two weeks.
@phendrick Yellow jackets are just a type of wasp. Most of the wasps I see around here are the yellow jacket type (but I dislike them all equally).
Just waiting for the Murder Hornets to migrate south from Washington state…
I have jumped out of a moving car before because of a wasp, I’m that scared of them (as a passenger, and we were in a neighborhood so we weren’t going that fast, but that fight or flight kicked in HARD)
@aliasdenied
I was driving down the road doing probably 30 and a wasp flew into my car and wouldn’t get out. It was down by my feet so I had the door open trying to kick it out (all while driving) it eventually stung me right in the crown of the head (like where a widows peak hairline would be if I had one) it hurt so bad. It hurt for so long too.
A wasp and a yellow jacket are two different things, but both sting like the dickens, however, nothing stings like a hornet!
I don’t usually react to insect bites, but last year I was stung by a hornet. My arm was so swollen I thought I was going to have to go to the ER. It was kinda scary.
I have never been stung by one before, and I hope I NEVER am stung by one again!
@Tadlem43, I found this. But I’m confused why is says all and then says some.
“Simply put, all hornets are wasps, but not all wasps are hornets. The term wasp includes many different types of insects, including yellow jackets, cicada killers, and even some hornets. While hornets are actually a subspecies of wasp, you can distinguish the pests by how they look and behave.”
@Tadlem43 I was stung on the ear by a Hornet a few weeks ago. Needless to say; that hurt! What was most troubling is that my ear went numb, after the pain subsided, and the skin around the edge of my ear died and crumbled away leaving open wounds along the entire edge of my ear. I’m still recovering from this but most of the skin has regrown. This is my second stinging insect incident in the last few weeks. See my story above about being stung by a Bee in my lower eyelid. Almost lost my eye and part of my face from that one.
@Kyeh@Tadlem43 I work in a research laboratory for a living, but I own a home with two acres of land that we have been landscaping for the last seven years. So, when I’m not in the lab, I’m out on the land, pruning, trimming, mowing, etc. We also keep Bees on the land. (One of my own got me) I don’t think I’m allergic to the venom, but who knows. I’ve been stung countless times by Bees, Wasps, Hornets, Yellow jackets, Bumblebees, etc. and these last two incidents are the only times I’ve had any trouble. The longer you’re allowed to live the more things change so, maybe I have developed a sensitivity to the venom.
@accelerator@Kyeh That can happen as we age. We become more ‘allergic’ to things, more sensitive.
Honey bees don’t bother me. I think I’ve only been stung by one of those, maybe two, in my life. We just seem to get along. lol But that hornet? Not so much!!
@kittykat9180 That’s interesting!
I don’t know all of the scientific stuff about it, but I know the difference when they’re chasing me through the yard. lol I know what each looks like… and I know they all can sting you and it can HURT.
Spiders don’t bother me, certain spiders I’ll even let set up camp in my house (they keep other insects at bay). But the ugly ones I relocate to outside.
I currently have 2 black widows living outside my house.
Wasps though, I will kill those MFs if I have the chance.
@ViperOne I was attending a wedding a few years back. The reception was held outside in a very remote location in central New Mexico. At the reception, the table where I was sitting had a large flower bouquet in the center. A Tarantula Hawk Wasp flew into the flowers. One of the people at the table tried to swat it away. WTF! The wasp took flight and landed right on the face of the person who attempted to swat it. Everyone froze, including the person who was hosting the wasp on their face. After a few seconds it took flight and flew into the dusk never to be seen again. No one was stung and it’s a good thing. We were hours away from any medical assistance.
Spiders bother me on a deep, visceral level, despite my knowing that, where I live, they’re completely harmless to humans. I won’t kill one, but I won’t coexist with one, either - it will be gently but firmly relocated outside.
Meanwhile, I maintain a healthy respect for wasps, despite having found an entire nest of them the hard way last summer.
I try to leave wasps (and spiders) alone if they’re not bothering anyone. But this nest was on my bedroom window frame and kind of hard to ignore. Pretty cool structure, though.
@Kyeh I think we have cane toads, bufo toads but I just don’t like frogs. I don’t remember being traumatized by any but I scream like a girl if one jumps on me. Not so much for anything else. Maybe it’s the slime factor? I DO know that wind chime post from @pooltoywolf creeped me out
@llangley@PooltoyWolf I guess getting jumped on by anything would make me shriek, even if they don’t scare me at a distance!
I thought the windchimes were cool, but they did give me a little trypophobia, and the wasp’s nests do too.
Wasp/hornets don’t bother me, we have an agreement; I leave them alone, they leave me alone. But if one of those fuckers stings me I’ll kill it. Spiders on the other hand I hate. Inside/outside it doesn’t matter, I don’t like them. I’ve had them wind up in my hair one to many times.
Wasps and hornets have stings that can kill people who may not know that they will have an anaphylactic shock reaction to the venom. If the wasps or hornets are in the wrong place or are too aggressive, they die, period.
@werehatrack My niece’s husband found that out the hard way. He was working in the woods and encountered a wasp nest. He was stung several times and began having trouble breathing. He was rushed to the emergency room and survived. Now he has to carry an Epipen all the time, because apparently now his immune system is primed for a potentially fatal reaction to a future sting.
Spiders.
@yakkoTDI Unless they are pickled.
Should have added this earlier.
I once had a wasp fly in between my glasses and my eye. It stung me on the eyelid. I vote wasps.
@zhicks1987 That’s terrifying!
@Kyeh @zhicks1987 I am recovering now from a Bee sting to my lower eyelid. This happened on the 4th of July, and it is still a problem. @accelerator @zhicks1987
WOW. I’m really glad that you’re getting better!
@accelerator @Kyeh @zhicks1987
Are you allergic to bees/wasp or was it just your luck?
@Kyeh @zhicks1987 Thank you. Yes, they were dark woods for sure.
@Kyeh @zhicks1987 Thank you.

Spiders and I get along just fine. Wasps, on the other hand, seem to enjoy stinging me in the face.
Now that I think about it, I’m probably most scared of termites, because of the damage they can cause.
scabies
@somf69 Wow, that brings back memories! We had that on one of those cheesy compilation albums put out by K-Tel records in the 70s. Those were the days, to quote that great philosopher, Archibald Bunker.
@ircon96 Did that one have “Brand New Key” by Melanie? Maybe an Alice Cooper song “I’m Eighteen” or “School’s Out”

@detailer @ircon96 Ooooooo - I hate “Brand New Key” - it’s a relentless whiny-sounding earworm!
@detailer @Kyeh Yeah, i vaguely remember being annoyed by it, even as a child! Lol
@ircon96 @Kyeh I agree with you both. It was reported that Keith Richards became nauseaous for several days upon hearing her remake/release of Ruby Tuesday.
@ircon96 @Kyeh I agree with you both. It was reported that Keith Richards became nauseaous for several days upon hearing her remake/release of Ruby Tuesday
@detailer @Kyeh To be fair, the nausea could have been a combination of her cover & way too much Jack Daniels, but it sounds plausible!
Considering I raise multiple paper wasp colonies, not those.
@PooltoyWolf Why?

That’s what Timothy Treadwell said about the grizzlies!
@Kyeh @PooltoyWolf They also will kill grubs in your yard. Wasps are really very productive, contributing insects. Highly underrated!
@ircon96 @PooltoyWolf What’s this about grizzlies?
@PooltoyWolf I didn’t know they were pollinators. That’s cool.

@hammi99 Oh, this was many years ago so not on you!
@Kyeh @macromeh @PooltoyWolf The “defending their home” thing is understandable, but i think of that as applying more to honeybees, they do what’s necessary, then back off. @ircon96 @Kyeh @macromeh I have personally never been chased by paper wasps. Hornets and yellow jackets may be a different story!
@ircon96 @PooltoyWolf Ohhhh - I don’t think I want to see that movie. It sounds gut-wrenching.
A spider bite for me is rare, and when it’s happened it’s generally been mostly just itchy. (Though I know there are some kinds that can be very deadly.)

@macromeh @phendrick hey now. we’ve been doing pretty good at tracking those down.
you’re an all-star
The little white bugs in dirt tubes on my home’s foundation.
I have jumped out of a moving car before because of a wasp, I’m that scared of them (as a passenger, and we were in a neighborhood so we weren’t going that fast, but that fight or flight kicked in HARD)
@aliasdenied Sounds like something i would do.
@aliasdenied better than freeze (fight flight freeze)
@aliasdenied

A wasp and a yellow jacket are two different things, but both sting like the dickens, however, nothing stings like a hornet!

@accelerator @Tadlem43 Yeah, maybe after all those stings you’re sensitized to it.
@accelerator @Kyeh No. I was outside with my dogs.
@accelerator @Kyeh That can happen as we age. We become more ‘allergic’ to things, more sensitive.
Honey bees don’t bother me. I think I’ve only been stung by one of those, maybe two, in my life. We just seem to get along. lol But that hornet? Not so much!!
@accelerator OUCH!! I hope it heals soon. If I had been stung anywhere on my head, I don’t think I would have made it.
@kittykat9180 That’s interesting!
I don’t know all of the scientific stuff about it, but I know the difference when they’re chasing me through the yard. lol I know what each looks like… and I know they all can sting you and it can HURT.
Those ticks that make you allergic to red meat.
@Salanth I already got stung by something that makes me allergic to stupidity
@Salanth
Tiny lone star tick
Slurps down your blood and infects
Now you can’t eat steak
@Salanth That’s a pretty aggressive vegan!
@blaineg The irony is that hunters are the ones who get it while trying to get some red meat.
Spiders don’t bother me, certain spiders I’ll even let set up camp in my house (they keep other insects at bay). But the ugly ones I relocate to outside.
I currently have 2 black widows living outside my house.
Wasps though, I will kill those MFs if I have the chance.
@kittykat9180 I once found this guy in our garden - nasty looking, but I guess they are harmless.
@kittykat9180 @macromeh
Argiope spider. They make really cool webs with a zigzag pattern in the middle.
@kittykat9180
Tarantula Hawk Wasp…… one of the most painful stings ever! What to do if you are ever stung? The advice by many is to just lie down and scream!
WTF! @accelerator Wow! So lucky. I live in the Mohave Desert and have seen many.
So, admittedly irrationally, spiders.
I try to leave wasps (and spiders) alone if they’re not bothering anyone. But this nest was on my bedroom window frame and kind of hard to ignore. Pretty cool structure, though.
None of the above. But…frogs!
My brother found this banana spider on his truck…look at the face on THIS mofo…
@llangley geeze, that’s basically a Skulltula from Ocarina of Time
@llangley Amazing spider, yikes!
Why frogs? Are there poisonous ones where you live?
@Kyeh I think we have cane toads, bufo toads but I just don’t like frogs. I don’t remember being traumatized by any but I scream like a girl if one jumps on me. Not so much for anything else. Maybe it’s the slime factor? I DO know that wind chime post from @pooltoywolf creeped me out

I thought the windchimes were cool, but they did give me a little trypophobia, and the wasp’s nests do too.
I’d say the scariest insects are scorpions:
@bofis Scorpions aren’t insects. My least favorite bugs are bats.
@Star2236 Yep, one stung my husband and got smushed by me.
Wasps set up another nest in the BBQ, and as usual got smoked/roasted for their trouble.
