Sony to shut down PS Vue on January 30th
1This morning I received a press release from Sony Corporate. Sony will discontinue their PS Vue streaming service effective January 30th, 2020.
As Apple TV+ and Disney+ come on online, other services will have to fight for subscribers. I wonder how many more will fall in the battle? Although PS Vue has been a money losing venture since day one. Maybe they should have followed the trend and renamed it “PS Vue+”?
Does this move by Sony affect you? If so, how will you shift your streaming entertainment dollars?

I don’t know what PS Vue is so I guess Mickey & I will be OK.

@therealjrn I figured it was how Sony was able to peer into people’s houses through the PS camera, in the event you might be motioning to turn the thing on.
Wax on to turn it on…Wax off to turn it off…
They should have just named it “Sony Vue” from the start. Currently the majority of the public think they need a PlayStation to use the service.
@Ignorant Absolutely. When Sony offered Vue in 2014 I started shopping for a PS4, thinking I had to have one to subscribe. It wasn’t until 2016 when I got a Fire TV Stick I realized it was available on several streaming platforms.
They doomed themselves. Just like Nintendo did when they named the Wii U. Most people I interacted with believed Wii U was some kind of accessory for the Wii.
@ruouttaurmind Nintendo seems to have learned their lesson, they did pretty well with the switch.
@Ignorant @ruouttaurmind I swear when I signed up for PS Vue a few years back, it required a Playstation to set up your account and there was a required login from a PS at least once a month. It was one of the reasons I dropped the service
@capguncowboy @Ignorant Perhaps it was a PS exclusive service upon rollout, later expanded to other devices?
For a company like Sony, with decades in the entertainment business, I’m really surprised they couldn’t make a go of it. I don’t believe they’ve ever seen a dime of profit in the years the service was offered.
I never tried even a free trial, so I have no experience with it.
I agree with others that the name was a bad choice - however I’ve been a PS Vue subscriber for about a year (I don’t own a PS) and have enjoyed it. Tonight I’ve been checking out YouTube TV and looks like it will keep me happy for a little less. YTTV’s offerings are better than they were when I last checked - I get my local channels, the sports channels I want, and HGTV for the mrs. Plus I can still share it with my 3 kids so we all have our own favorite settings like PS Vue.
@ilovereality I think you’ll be happy with YouTube TV it’s a great service.
@Ignorant @ilovereality I’m still in the trial period for YouTube TV and like it so far. The interface sucks, but the content makes up for it.
I have PS Vue. It has everything I was looking for in live TV, but now I have to search again. Maybe I’ll give it a month to see if Fubo or Sling up their content.
It’s interesting that streaming made us able to disconnect from cable and save $$$. Now, there are so many streaming companies with exclusive content that if you want them all, you’re no longer saving $$$. We’ve come full circle.
@goldnectar I agree. What was initially “cut the cord, save $100 on cable and spend $6 for Netflix” has evolved into a situation where the full service streamers like Hulu Live, YouTube TV, et al are nearly as costly as cable and satellite. More costly if you factor in a portion of the required high bandwidth internet connection one must maintain to use these services.
I fired Dish Network satellite service several months ago. Since then I’ve been living with OTA broadcast and a (shared) Amazon Prime Video and Netflix sub. My monthly streaming entertainment expense is about 10% of what my Dish satellite bill was. But I’m also missing a pile of the stuff I used to love to watch. For now it’s working ok, but I feel myself beginning to pine for HBO, the AMC shows and the like.
I use an IPTV service, is it perfect, no, but 4000 channels for less than 30 bucks a month works for me for now…
