Something’s goat to give (July 2023 scapegoat blame thread)
12Summer is just starting to hit its stride and we’re looking at some real heat in the month. Time to start blaming someone for that burn, and while we appreciate @gogrrl coming through as a delightful target in June, July is a whole new beast. Showing up to give you an easy out for the mid-summer month, and hopping right into the fray is @PHRoG!
Close as I could get to with AI. We can call it a horned toad, and you can blame @PHRoG for the mess with the back leg.
Tastes like chicken…

@ExtraMedium That’s pretty cute!
@Kyeh
I think he’s even cute enough for a t-shirt or a mascot!
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer Agreed. Maybe without the wonky knee-foot? Or does that add to the charm?
@brainmist @Lynnerizer Maybe that’s its amphibious appendage?
@brainmist @Kyeh @Lynnerizer Awwww…its just a dewclaw
@Kyeh to be fair @phrog is adorable.
Blame in advance: For reasons of inflammation reduction, I’m going to be on steroids (prednisone type) from the 12th through the 17th. Anyone who has been there knows that these tend to make one cranky. I will probably just stay offline for the duration.
@werehatrack
So…, post away, anyway. We’ll excuse you. And then we’ll know
/giphy Joey How You Doing
@werehatrack Better you are cranky than unprovoked vicious like one member has been recently. Cranky will see tame in comparison.
@phendrick @werehatrack I can’t do prednisone - more than cranky, it makes me bat-shit crazy. I mean can’t sit still, paranoid, thoughts of jumping in front of a bus crazy. I know that you are supposed to taper off gradually before stopping, but after my experience I quit cold turkey and never took another dose. The cure was worse than the original problem.
I hope your experience is better than mine!
@macromeh @phendrick @werehatrack I occasionally have to do high dose (60 mg/day) prednisone (sudden sensorineural hearing loss; immediate massive fuckloads of prednisone can as much as double likelihood of recovery) and yeah, the crazy is REAL. Usually I go through a day of just vibrating but not being able to do anything, then manic energy and laser eyes. One time I circled my city’s riverfronts for 5 hours. Starting at about 9 pm.
Another time I ate half a chicken and a quart of beans and rice from Popeye’s in 10 minutes (maybe less) in an airport, while peripherally aware of some very highly groomed person in designer sweats that probably said “Juicy” on the butt staring at me in absolute horror from 10 feet away.
Bring on the crazy. Maybe start a crazy prednisone thread? We’re here for you.
@macromeh @phendrick @werehatrack Oh, also, the cranky? Might be needing to eat something.
@brainmist @phendrick @werehatrack My bad prednisone experience was also associated with treating sudden hearing loss in one ear.
The hearing problem has actually happened to me twice, years apart. The first time, I took the prescribed prednisone without experiencing the extreme reaction, and the hearing gradually returned.
The second experience was as I noted above. My hearing still gradually returned to normal without taking the prednisone beyond the first couple doses.
So, there’s that…
@brainmist @macromeh @werehatrack I’ve had noticeable and prgressive hearing loss for very many years, and at least 15 before (knowingly) taking any steroids. Once I got on them for the prolonged period, I don’t recall their having any effect on the hearing.
The hearing loss was diagnosed as caused by fusion of those tiny bones in the middle ear. No doctor ventured a guess on what caused it, and they should all have been aware of the steroid use.
Just goes to show you, we are all so different. Doctors don’t have much of a chance of getting it right the first (several) times, do they?
@brainmist @phendrick @werehatrack At my first episode of sudden hearing loss, my GP referred me to an audiologist. They put me through a series of tests. Although (at least at the time) he said there was no definitive known cause for the problem, he explained his understanding/theory (and I am probably butchering the details):
In the inner ear, there is a chamber that is divided by a thin membrane. On each side of the membrane, there are fluids that have opposite electrical charges. Sometimes a microscopic tear in the membrane allows some fluid to leak from one side to the other, canceling each other and causing loss (or extreme attenuation) of hearing. Sometimes (often?), the membrane repairs itself and normal hearing is restored.
The sudden part is no exaggeration: in both my experiences, my right ear went from my normal hearing to almost entirely attenuated external sound and a high pitched tone in an instant. It persisted for a couple of weeks, then gradually returned to normal.
Is it me?? Please let it be me!
@Kidsandliz @Trinityscrew So far, the pain meds and the other effects of the surgery seem t to be keeping the crankiness under control. My face still looks like a balloon sculpture.
@Kidsandliz @Trinityscrew @werehatrack
Or a Picasso portrait, maybe?!
Interesting about the fluid. I hadn’t heard that, but then I haven’t totally researched the physiology. I just kind of accepted the condition. Anyway, there are a lot of people I don’t feel like I need to listen to anyway. Turning up the TV full did annoy my wife though, when she was still at home.
I’m still waiting for the “return to normal”. It’s at least 40 years overdue.
UNBLAME? At the tender age of 69, I have been officially diagnosed with ADHD. This has produced cries of incredulity and shock from precisely no one who knows me. In fact, it’s more along the lines of “Well, DUH!” The formal diagnosis opens doors to the possibility of doing things about it which were not an option without it. However, all of that will be a “next month” item, because I have A Major Thing Going On next Tuesday which will be occupying my full attention for a while.
No pictures until at least August, possibly September, maybe later.
@werehatrack I’m glad you got the diagnosis. I’m thinking I need to check on this, because I seem to fall on the TAG>>adult ADHD pipeline.
@werehatrack congratulations on the diagnosis, my father was diagnosed in his 50s because us kids thought he had dementia.
@werehatrack Hopefully the major drug shortage to treat this won’t prevent you from doing anything about it.
@brainmist @werehatrack diagnosed at 38. Best news in my life…finally i can function (somewhat) normally.
@Kidsandliz @werehatrack shortage seems to be just about over. I have been able to get meds for me and my kid easily for about 2 months now.
@werehatrack Ever since my son was diagnosed with ADHD some 40 years ago and then I found out he got it from the male member of the family, I knew that I had it. I took a test where if you said yes to 6 of the 10 questions, you had it-I said yes to 8 of the 10. Then they listed the occupations that ADHD were inconsistent with-accountant (for needing to be organized) being at the top of the list. I had already passed my CPA exam so thanks for that. My mother threatened me with reform school when I was growing up if I didn’t start concentrating in school.
When your son’s first grade teacher comes up to you during back to school night in Oct (about a month after school starts) and tells you your son is not going to graduate 1st grade, you can imagine all hell broke loose. Got a learning specialist to watch him in class and recommend the best course of action. He went back to kindergarden in the school designed for LD students. Was on Ritalin for a time which helped him greatly. Went to college in a special program that had both tutoring and meeting with a school psychologist each week and he graduated in 4 years with a degree in computer science and now makes over 100k a year. An ADHD success story.
@Felton10 ADHD didn’t exist when i was a kid. I never had a chance.
@werehatrack Even when my son was diagnosed with it, people were skeptical of it. We were lucky enough to live where we were able to take him to NIH to be evaluated by the foremost expert in the country in medication for ADHD who prescribed Ritalin for him.
When I had it, like I said my mother threatened me with all sorts of things-reform school, no TV (especially Leave it to Beaver which I loved), even spankings. She single handedly pushed/dragged me through 4 years of college and 3 years of law school.
spent all day Tuesday in surgery. My face now looks like a baloon sculpture. Supposedly, it should be less puffy on Saturday.
@werehatrack Keep you favorite pain meds handy, and keep a sharp eye out for certain small dogs.
@phendrick No small dogs, just lots of pain. Still waiting for the swelling to abate. Spending lits if rime asleep.
@werehatrack I imagine!
I think rest/sleep might be THE best medicine for most bodily trauma.
I must have slept more than 12 hours each day the first few days after each of my two sinus surgeries and the rest of the time I was wishing I were asleep.
Might also want to reduce the time around these forums. Probably the last thing you want is to be laughing at something.
Best wishes.
Blame and unblame-went to a restaurant last night and my wife and I ordered the same thing except that she asked that no salt be put on her fries. When the bill came, cost of her dinner was $ 2.00 more than mine. The waitress explained that when she put in the order for no salt on her fries, that is the price it came up with. Said I never heard of charging for that before but it is what it is.
Gave her my credit card and when she came back, she said she had taken the $ 2.00 off and as she walked away told her I was going to add the extra $2.00 on to her tip which I did. Was going to give her a little extra anyway as she was a good and attentive waitress so she got a 25% tip.
@Felton10 Just think all the effort that went into scraping all that salt off those precooked fries!
Reminds me of this scene:
Remember when Jack Nicholson was this young?
@Felton10 I mean they shouldn’t have charged extra without explaining, but I could maybe see how someone in the chain took NO salt. Differently than “unsalted” and just decided they had to make her a custom batch? Maybe? Cause people are way too picky these days.
Only thing I can think of.
@unksol Actually the other couple we were with-the man asked for no salt on his fries also and was also charged extra and his bill was adjusted also.
@Felton10 interesting. Maybe the owner just. Dislikes people with hypertension? Lol. I find it weird too
$2 would be a huge add on a diner meal around here for something so small. But a smaller place having to do a separate batch… maybe… and should still be disclosed regardless of where. “Sure, That that will be extra”
@unksol The $ 2.00 was added to a 28.90 meal making it 30.90.
@Felton10 still sounds unreasonable/I agree with you just. Makes no sense. Maybe they just have a flat “any customization is $2” policy? Which still makes no sense for salt.
I think this was the last diner I was in and prices were lower before I left that city a decade ago.
http://sunrisediner.com/
There is this place up the road… But id have to talk to people and tip and… Ugh lol
@unksol This is a new place “Owen’s Fish Camp” that just opened up in the burbs (they have a place downtown) and and we got their at 4:45 and had a 45 minute wait to be seated and this is off season no less.
@Felton10 yes we are not fancy out here in the Midwest. Was trying to calibrate the $2 outrage lol
I guess early fish don’t get the worms… Or… Something
Blame: hurt my back again.
Unblame: I get to have a lazy weekend.
Blame: I’d rather be moving around.
Unblame: can you claim workers comp if working from home and your back goes out when you stand up after sitting working? … No it’s not really that bad, I’ll be moving normally again in a few days.
@OnionSoup
Sounds like a work injury to me!
@OnionSoup some companies you can get ergonomic chairs. Back supports. Standing desks.
Mostly because they want to get more work out of you or avoid health insurance premiums. But it might be worth checking. It’s basically just work equipment
My face is still swollen, particularily in the area of the genioplàsty, but the pain continues to slowly abate. Still not back on the solid food, damn it. Have a serious shortage of bacon consumption that will have to be addressed late this week.
@werehatrack have you considered a bacon smoothy?
Salty an sweet is good.
/image bacon smoothie
@unksol the idea may be tested romorrow
@unksol The swelling in my chin is still mostly not gone (ick) but it’s down to the point where I can eat a lot more stuff without doing a Denethor impression. Bacon is back on the menu, at least.
@unksol @werehatrack Rub some bacon on it?
(there’s also
zqD5hDbgLyU
, but I figure I should restrain myself and only post one bacon-themed video at a time)@unksol @xobzoo Since I last updated, there’s been no notable change. Unfortunately, according to several information sources, I may be looking at five more months of this stiffness and swelling, and three to five beyond that before the intended result is achieved. I have another visit with the surgeon on the schedule for tomorrow, and I will have a number of questions to ask. Depending on the answers, I may be cancelling everything I had planned as a face-to-face activity through January. Should that happen, I can 100% guarantee that I will fade as far into the background as possible for the “holiday season” in order to avoid raining on everyone else’s parade. It won’t be the first time; for varying reasons, I have dreaded the approach of November 1st for most of my life.
@werehatrack @xobzoo on the bright side of any of those sources were on the Internet they are likely wrong. So. Crossing my fingers.
Holidays are. Well. What they are.
Firstly I blame @phrog for it taking so long for me to blame him. Secondly I blame @phrog for making this house painting taking so bloody long! He neglected to tell me that there was going to be a pint sprayer in the last thon and also he could get his Lily livered arse across town to come help a friend out! So there it’s all your fault @phrog!
Meh. He came back. We got him out of the yard last Monday (because the fence is modified to keep our cats on our property) and he came back Tuesday. Now he’s here to stay.
I blame @phrog for hiding these guys’ point of entry from us (the second cat in less than a month, the other one stayed gone, most likely a feral, this one is not - not afraid of the cats or the little dog).
Vet appointment is set for Wednesday.
@lisaviolet Wow, he was hungry!
Smart kitty …
@Kyeh @lisaviolet you know… I have generated some that I really shouldn’t have. But you seem to be collecting. Gotta catchem all huh? Lol.
@Kyeh @unksol Yeah, it’s tough when they keep coming back.
It gets to the point “okay, cat, it’s obvious you want to be here, so…”
@Kyeh @lisaviolet I mean if I stumbled into a paradise and got kicked out… And found my way back… Lol
@lisaviolet @unksol RIGHT!
@lisaviolet @unksol It’s funny, I can’t ABIDE the sound of a human chewing and slurping loudly, but when a cat does it somehow I find it cute.
@Kyeh @lisaviolet @unksol
I could be way off base, but looking at the video I would suggest he is most likely a she.
99%+ tricolor cats are female…
@chienfou @lisaviolet @unksol Looks more Siamese than calico, plus I think I saw some rather prominent little nuts between his legs.
@chienfou @Kyeh @lisaviolet I saw a suggestion of some balls back there but they are very small when they are young. Before they have a… Package… regularless. Im sure Lisa has a better handle on it than most of us
@chienfou @unksol “handle” ?
I think this boy is an adult cat. But as you say, @lisaviolet can clear this up.
@chienfou @Kyeh @lisaviolet as in she has probably scruffed him and made sure he was ok. Cause she let him in. Going to the vet. Sex/fixed status is I assume a basic check so if Lisa says he I’m sure it’s a he
@chienfou @Kyeh @lisaviolet @unksol Yes looks siamese due to colors as Kyeh said, if it has already been fixed basically any “nuts” would look very tiny, not to mention the female has an extra “hole” back there. And Lisa has had enough cats I am reasonably sure, as unksol has said, that she can tell the sex pretty easily except if it is a very, very young baby kitten. In any case this kitty wants to live there so she has another fur baby.
@chienfou @Kyeh @unksol
Most definitely an intact male. No longer.
He was tested at the time of neuter, he is FIV+ (which I guessed he was because he was so mellow around the other cats, even when they tried to start something (I’m looking at you, Ike)), but that doesn’t worry me because it’s spread via deep bite wounds, and like I said, this cat doesn’t fight.
Not sure of his actual age, he IS young, but also has the beginning of the tom cat jowls.
Since the neuter (the 19th), he’s stopped patrolling the yard at night, looking for a way out. Being an Oriental breed, he’s pretty vocal and he was quite articulate about his quest. I’m hoping he’s realized how good he has it here and is settling in.
He’s starting to respond to his new name and is still deciding if we humans are worth his time and affection. It won’t be long now.
And I admit Temptations treats have helped me out a lot.
@chienfou @Kyeh @lisaviolet pretty eyes
@Kyeh @lisaviolet @unksol
Glad that’s settled. I was always interested in the sex link coloring in cats so it caught my attention…
@chienfou @Kyeh @lisaviolet @unksol Glad he is mellow. Since he choose to stay I am sure he’ll come around with time. Pretty kitty.
@Kyeh @lisaviolet @unksol
Looks much more two-tone in the last pic… Glad he found you. I am sure he will thrive there.
Big time blame. Nearly 3 years ago I started a small food bank at a once a month free clinic. Maybe 25-30 patients come each month of which a third of them have to be picked up by a shuttle because they have no cars, there is no bus service in that county and they have no way to get there. The person running it is retiring, internally no one wanted to take over so we approached some charities who do the same thing elsewhere in the 3 county region this city and it’s suburbs (well own separate cities but you can’t tell without signs). The one taking it over wants me not to do it anymore. The church (one of those big ones located in a warehouse) who gave our clinic space runs a food bank Monday nights (our clinic is the third Thursday of the month). The organization said they can just come then. The church that runs the Monday food back doesn’t run a shuttle so just how will they get there??? So tomorrow is the last time I will be running the food bank as they take over next month. I stock it with food from the hud I live in that people get monthly (delivered here) that they don’t want. Keeps it out of the dumpster and the people who choose what they want from the tables I lay out really count on that food. So far no one has been able to change their mind. Makes me sad.
I cornered the guy who will be supervising what is going on at our clinic in the future. I pointed out all the people who came by the shuttle who had 2 and 3 walmart bags of groceries around their chairs. I asked him how they would get there Monday’s and that each and every one of those people had bags of food. He said it wasn’t much food. I told him when you are choosing between needs and needs anything helps (And these people help the poor? Cripes they have no clue about reality of being very poor.). He said he didn’t realize they had no way to get here. HUH? I am positive they know about the shuttle because it is going to continue. Anyway he said he’d discuss it with the head honcho. Still may not continue but at least now “one of theirs” is on our side about this. Fingers crossed.
Blame - we’re not even into 2024 yet, and the political squabbling is already going on in various threads. @Thumperchick, any chance you could relegate it to a single thread again? It’s just so tiresome.
Impending threat!
Giant avocado invasion!!!
@Kyeh
@Kyeh
I guess you’re toast
@ybmuG
Blame!! What fucking rabbit hole did I fall into to end up back here?!
@mfladd who is this?!?!?!
@mfladd https://meh.com/forum/topics/wanted-mfladd
@werehatrack Thank you, but I KNOW Mflafd. I was being silly!!!
@tinamarie1974 Silliness is to be treasured. Pray proceed.
@tinamarie1974 @werehatrack
who dis? New phone
@unksol @werehatrack
@tinamarie1974 @werehatrack I tried to image it first time but it did not work. We need a kym slash and yes I did it forward, the backwards and gave up lol
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/new-phone-who-dis
Note: Not my fault, I had nothing to do with it, this is not my month to be the goat.
@werehatrack what?
@tinamarie1974 I was disclaiming any connection with rabbit holes. Or rabbits. I get enough blame from cats to fill my quotas anyway.
@tinamarie1974 @werehatrack Your cats would not blame you if you brought a rabbit home.
Great goatly deeds have been done. I was shopping with friends, tripped, and fell on my face. Broken sinus, one broken wrist, one sprained. Lesson learned; I can’t walk and talk at the same time. Blame!
@OldCatLady
Ouch!!! Hope you heal fast!
@OldCatLady That is the last thing you needed!!! I hope you heal quickly.
@OldCatLady
Oh no how awful! I sure hope you’re a good healer. Sending you lots of good vibes and healing prayers!
BTW;
I shattered my hand and wrist when I all of the sudden just toppled over while simply standing there next to my bed before getting in. (No walking or talking involved! )
MY takeaway was that I SHOULD’VE learned how to tuck and roll! Lol
Life’s lessons just never stop coming.
@Lynnerizer @OldCatLady Speaking of tuck and roll… my mom’s great granddaughter (3) told my mom she wouldn’t keep hurting herself when she fell if she’d tuck her head so it would hit the ground last or maybe not even hit at all. She said that is what she did when she was playing and fell. Out of the mouth of kids LOL. Mom said she remembered that the last time she lost her balance (mom has balance problems) and it worked - although not sure it would work when falling forward like you did.
@OldCatLady oh no, I am so sorry! Wishing you a speedy recovery!!!
@OldCatLady How are you doing?
@Kidsandliz
Still hurt, but the sprained wrist is cooperative. Cleaner lady starts next week, garden crew comes weekly. Doordash helps. Coffee pods are bad for the environment, but good for me. People are helpful here… Thanks for asking. You’re nice, too.
@Kidsandliz @OldCatLady
glad you are on the mend!
@Kidsandliz @OldCatLady
That’s funny! I was thinking I was going to be reading something about a turtle! Tucking in her head and all. Lol
Kids say the darndest things! Love that TV show of the same name. It’s hilarious!
@Lynnerizer @OldCatLady Speaking of kids say the darnedest things the best I over heard was two red heads (4 and 6; red hair skipped two generations in our extended family) where the 4 year old said she was tired of people asking her where she got that lovely red hair. The six year old told her he told them it came with his head and it shut them right up. I have passed that on (with parental permission) to kids with red hair and parents who didn’t have any. To a kid they loved that.
@Kidsandliz @OldCatLady
Good one!
