So hurricane Nate has arrived...
5… and I had finished preparing the house for it. Secured the chickens in their coop, tied down the greenhouse I built for the wife, lowered the TV antenna we have because I cut the cable years ago.
Yup, lowered the TV antenna.
On the night of the Michigan State vs Michigan game.
Hurricanes suck.

@Mehrocco_Mole I’m using an internal TV antenna but would like an outdoor one. Was there a website or a book that you used for reference when mounting your antenna?
@therealjrn Not really. The mast was from Radio Shack (it’s that old) for a pre-digital full sized antenna. The current antenna was purchased on-line. When picking out your antenna you should know how far away the transmitting tower is from your home. Make sure it’s the tower not the station. In our town the station is about 10 miles south of us while the tower is 30 miles due west in the next state over. Get an antenna that is rated for the distance. Mounting is another issue altogether. Roof mounted, mast mounted, gable mounted, or even mounted in your attic are all valid methods depending on the distance from the tower and/or the physical limitations of your home.
When I lost my antenna to hurricane Ivan I spent a lot of time online researching this stuff. Google was my friend indeed.
@Mehrocco_Mole Thanks. I’ve been reading up a little, like at antennaweb and such.
Good luck with the storm!
@therealjrn If you don’t have an existing tower you might compromise by mounting an outdoor antenna high up in the attic. I did this, connected it to the cable wiring throughout the house and reception is excellent. All our towers are in the same general direction from here and 25-30 miles out so I was able to get a simple directional antenna vs one of those fancy rotating jobs. Total cost was around $30 for antenna, coax, and a 10’ PVC conduit to mount the antenna to.
Edit: I see @mehrocco_mole mentioned attic mount above. Good luck with the storm.
Yes hurricanes suck… I am praying that Hurricane Nate doesn’t damage or destroy your property…Harvey destroyed my parents home and car and our lives are in a total upheaval because of the rain Harvey dumped here in Texas.
Damn coast hoggin’ all the hurricanes. The midwest would like some flooding too ya know!
@nogoodwithnames
Just as soon as y’all quit bogarting the blizzards!
On second thought, having grown up in Northern Michigan (TC) you guys can keep 'em.
@nogoodwithnames Been there, done that. Flood of '93. Have no desire to have the town evacuated and have to live up at the high school again.
Hey Nate.
You suck.
But don’t suck too much, OK?
