@FreePasta
Yeah thank goodness they didn’t have one because I somehow totally spaced out and never came here ALL day! Guess you could say it was my lucky day!
Why are vacuums almost always bagless now? If I vacuum up something gross I want it bagged up so I can dispose of it without having to handle or breathe it again. Bagged vacs still exist but they are hard to find. They come and go on home depot. Thanks but no thanks for this refurbish thing. It’s not that the vac itself is refurbished. It’s that bagless vacs only refurbish dirt instead of getting rid of it.
@phr But being bagless also means it can be emptied before completely full without wasting a bag, so the gross thing doesn’t have a chance to fester and get extra stinky.
@phr just get yourself a meile it’s what we did, if you live anywhere near a large population there is bound to be a real vacuum dealer that will have a nice selection of new/refurb units that will make you very happy.
@jemullins@phr Meile or a Sebo, my MIL tried Meile but didn’t like it and we got her Sebo. I think it’s German. And agree with @phr I live in an area with 250k folks in the greater region, and we both at a vacuum store
@phr Remembering to buy bags before you run out can be a big hassle or nearly impossible, depending on personal situation. For example, many people with ADHD have difficulty remembering things like that at the right time. With a bagless, you just have to clean it out occasionally (which is easy to remember when you can see it directly, and doesn’t take advance planning).
Plus, they cost money. Maybe not quite like ink cartridges, but it’s more than zero.
@phr@xobzoo $15 for a replacement for the HEPA filter; how often do those get clogged when you’ve got a lot of fine dust? Compare and contrast a small filter panel with the huge surface area of the inside of a cheap bag - which admittedly doesn’t filter the tiniest particles, but I have a room air filter for that. I want my floor vacuum to take care of the macroschmutz. My cordless stick vac has a bagless collection canister followed by a washable filter that plugs with crap in one charge cycle; if it wasn’t washable, those filters would cost a fortune to replace as often as I’d need them.
I think I’ll stick with my bagged uprights. (Besides, I got both of them for the cost of one belt, two packs of bags, and the time needed to install two missing screws. My neighbor was tossing them out.)
I have the refurbished lift away I bought from meh some years back. It is still going strong and so my experience at least means refurbished isn’t a bad thing. I did find however that usually you can’t fill the canister full if a lot of pet hair is involved as it tends to then bunch up and block the transfer area from the top to the main part of the canister. Easy to get out though. Has good suction.
Do not recommend trying to vacuum the actual cat unless you turn the suction way down. LOL. I had a cat who tolerated being vacuumed as long he could tuck his head in my elbow and the suction wasn’t too high. As he shed a lot that was useful.
@Kidsandliz I bought this refurbished Shark vacuum over 4 years ago and it’s still going strong like it’s new. I only wished it had onboard tools, but I knew going in that this model swapped tools for light weight—which is why I bought it initially. My Shark sucks up so much dust and dog hair that I get grossed out thinking that it’s my own filth I’m living with. That said, I never had any issues buying refurbished products online, in fact in my experience they seem to last somewhat longer than new products do.
@Bcburk You have a pool to keep your pet shark in? Although keeping it there may be expensive and potentially dangerous if you want to use the pool (although if you have errant teens forcing them to go swimming might be a good threat) although if you have a murder shed and then likely they’d eat well at no risk to yourself in more ways than one.
@Barney@hchavers For the ones who have fully embraced their inner testosterone victim, it’s called “ShopVac”, and it’s a “dust collection and control system”. For the ones who had to learn how to keep their own place clean solo, the worst that happens is that maybe they put a racing stripe on it with some duct tape.
@Barney@hchavers@werehatrack it’s only a dust collection and control system if you’ve built your own cyclone dust collector and have it hooked up to tools.
I have the plans book marked, and some of the tools but if I’m honest it gets dragged into the house to clean up the kicked out cat litter now and then
Granted I was/am a bachelor and have had a lot of hard wood since 2013. So has not been heavily used. But it was easily the best vacuum I had ever bought. Came like new. But companies charge in a decade. Still if I needed a vacuum for carpet… I’d bite.
@unksol Inclusion of “flooring” might have been a good idea.Just say’n.But as is,replies should be redirected to the Intangible thing/refurbished discussion.
One more vote for “bagless is not what I want”. Fortunately, I have two uprights that use bags. They work really well. The cordless bagless stick vac I paid a lot more for, not so much. It has its uses, but heavy-duty vacuuming isn’t any of them. This Shark looks like it combines some of the worst of the stick and some of the worst of the uprights I already have, but without the meager performance of the current stick. Pass.
@werehatrack I just empty it into the outside trash can.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But I’ll admit I don’t use it much and it’s mostly cat hair. The robo vac is obviously bagless too. The sharks have good filters/sealing so. No big deal to me. But technically a well designed bag is a big filter with more surface area so. Whatever floats your boat eh?
@unksol@werehatrack The catch, at least for me, is the expense of the bags if you are sucking up a lot of cat hair on a regular basis. That is why I bought the refub shark from here years ago.
I gotta say, “I Love my Shark!” Should I say Sharks, I have a few. The one like this is Amazing! I never really used the lift away feature, but I have to say, as much dog fur and dander that I pick up, it’s amazing that they aren’t both bald. I don’t care if it is bagless, it saves money and if I need to, I can always wipe out the chamber. I have to empty it frequently, because it gets full… I think what I really need to do is vacuum more often, perhaps? If I needed one, I would buy this. I have never had issues with refurb items. They generally come looking brand new.
@Barney Me, too, it sucked me in (accidental pun alert!), even though it’s not a very good depiction of my search term. I guess i should specify that /giphy sucks in the “accurate results” department!
You should have seen some of the other options! Yeesh. On a side note, that dog reminds me of a pre-midnight-snack mogwai – i shall call him “Gizmo”!
I own a similar shark. Have had it for 8 years. It still works great. My only complaint is when using the cleaning wand extended away from the base, the damn thing tips over. The suction pulls the base towards the head and it typically falls onto you or towards you. Once you’ve figured that out, you will love this.
I’ll just say that we have one and LOVE it. No joke - getting it led to the demise of our ridiculous $700 Dyson monstrosity. I’m tempted to get this deal just to have a spare in case our old one ever stops working.
@harborvu You’re the second person I’ve heard be glad to swap from an expensive Dyson to a Shark. The other person said that the Dyson was a very good vacuum, but seemed to have been designed by someone more interested in adding Amazing Features than making it simple, fast, easy and pleasant to use.
@harborvu I gave my Dyson away, it was repaired at least 3 times and still did not “suck”, so it truly sucked in the traditional concept of sucking. I love my sharks, have had one over 10 years. Love their robots too.
In for one. Last year my husband told me to get a new vacuum after I got rid of my two decrepit bagged upright vacuums. One had been my mom’s and mine was just old.
Price check on aisle internet. Nope. Nope, nope, nope, I’ll just keep using my little Shark HEPA machine.
Now I’ll have an upright again! And no bags to deal with. Nice.
Wait! Wait! I have tile floors! How will it work on those?
@lisaviolet It works just fine on tile floors. I don’t know if this one has it, but some of them have a big button you can stomp to switch modes; while others just glide on and keep working.
I have a slightly different Shark Rotator, and it’s great. At this price it would be amazing. It’s more effective on my nemesis, cat litter, than my old Dyson, and it’s much lighter, but it’s pretty noisy, and the collection chamber is smaller. fwiw
The write up was ok but I wouldn’t have jumped on the dented food cans right away. I worked in a food pantry once and I had to actually take a class on what was acceptable and what was not for dented cans as some dents (especially on the seals) can ruin the integrity of the can and spoil the food inside.
That being said, there’s a store nearby run by the Amish that sell dented, refurbished, overstock, and expired items. They’re great, especially in a recession - I’ve been shopping there since 2008 when I moved to the area. But I do have to keep an eye on the dents and expiration dates. I’ve gotten a few duds of items - and some real great deals too.
I bought a Shark ages ago, and it’s still going strong… but I think this will suit my needs better, and I can give the old one to somebody else who needs it!
Refurbished products almost always go through an enhanced inspection compared to products that passed initial inspection.
Bagless vacuums are disposable by design. You have a vacuum (the physics term vacuum) that is generated based on tight tolerances. Being bagless the tight tolerances are worn out over time because of particulates entering the system. It was a design created by James Dyson that is an adaptation of industrial dust collectors.
@rychemastr “almost always”, unless you’re talking about Fuji cameras or Sony audio gear. I have tales of woe for both of those. One of the Fujis had to go back for immediate repair of things not caught by QC twice.
I have a different Shark and it’s fairly decent. I have 3 long haired cats that make any vacuum seem less than perfect, but maybe this one will change my mind, lol! I refuse to pay for a Dyson when I hear so many people say they don’t live up to their rep.
I also have an old Hoover Wind Tunnel (with bags) that does the BEST job I’ve ever seen at pulling out deep dirt. I love it and I don’t want it to ever break! It’s so strong that I feel it lifting the carpet underneath. I only use it when I want to deep clean every couple of months so I don’t wear it out, and use my Shark as my daily driver (or weekly driver…that’s probably more accurate. ).
If this one is better, my current one will become my upstairs one.
@k4evryng I got a Hoover Wind Tunnel when Meh was sending out vacuums for their round of Fukos (maybe it was Fukus?) that sucked. I love this vacuum and I really hope it lasts forever. Well, I can hope.
@Barney I’m guessing, like most appliances, the newer wind tunnels aren’t as good as the old ones. The one I have is 20+ years old and it does a great job. The handle broke after a few months though.
Maybe I got a weirdly supercharged one…but I just can not get over how it lifts the carpet up off the floor even on wall to wall, lol! It’s probably not great for the carpet…but it has amazing suction.
I’m sure this one will do a good job, and if it turns out to be great, then I’ll be back for another one as a spare if they sell it again…
I have one of these and two Dyson vacuums which cost much more. This vacuum picks up pet hair and maneuvers just as well as the Dyson. The filters are much easier to clean and the bin is easier to empty because it opens on the top and bottom. My family prefers grabbing this one.

@FreePasta

@phr The vacuum subreddit is obsessed with mostly bagged vacuums, as I learned researching today for a vacuum (before I saw meh lol)
@phr You empty the vacuum into a trashbag, poof the end.
@GnarlySprocket @phr But get dust all over yourself in the process, ugh. Seems like it defeats the purpose of Hepa filtering.
WHAT?? Sharks can SUCK?? I thought they only gulped water and pulverized their prey! Who knew??
@IndifferentDude Apparently they can rotate as well. News to me!
@IndifferentDude @mehcuda67 After all those 'nado movies you didn’t know the could suck and rotate?
I have the refurbished lift away I bought from meh some years back. It is still going strong and so my experience at least means refurbished isn’t a bad thing. I read no further than the title but it’s a Pet shark PLUS an upright vacuum? What a deal at $99!
@Bcburk You have a pool to keep your pet shark in? wull that’s one weird lookin’ speaker dock
@alacrity They don’t even say if it’s stereo.
Meh, men can use vacuums too.
@hchavers Really? I thought it was just folklore.
@Barney @hchavers For the ones who have fully embraced their inner testosterone victim, it’s called “ShopVac”, and it’s a “dust collection and control system”. For the ones who had to learn how to keep their own place clean solo, the worst that happens is that maybe they put a racing stripe on it with some duct tape.

@Barney @hchavers @werehatrack had to go downstairs to find it but this is the one I have marked
http://www.jpthien.com/cy.htm
Don’t remember why but seems like a simple effective design.
@unksol @werehatrack @hchavers It’s way beyond my abilities.
@Barney @hchavers @werehatrack it’s just a lid some standoffs and bolts, a baffle, and some plumbing parts.
Does @Barney woodwork? That would be interesting
It’s meant for actual dust collection while woodworking/hooked up to a saw/planer etc with a shop vac. Where you generate a ton.
Commercial version is something like
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Dustopper-High-Efficiency-Dust-Separator-12-in-Dia-with-2-5-in-Hose-36-in-Long-HD12/302643445.
But I do like the idea of the baffle and sizing to your container
@unksol @werehatrack @hchavers Barney has no woodworking talent. And don’t let me get near a saw; I’m too dangerous.
@Barney I didn’t think so. But that would have been an interesting secret hobby to just pop out after a near decade. over vacuums. Lol
I bought a much less… advanced? shark refurb over a decade ago in the before times.
https://www.woot.com/offers/euro-pro-shark-nv22-navigator-bagless-upright
Granted I was/am a bachelor and have had a lot of hard wood since 2013. So has not been heavily used. But it was easily the best vacuum I had ever bought. Came like new. But companies charge in a decade. Still if I needed a vacuum for carpet… I’d bite.
@unksol
@unksol Inclusion of “flooring” might have been a good idea.Just say’n.But as is,replies should be redirected to the Intangible thing/refurbished discussion.
@detailer lol. I did not parse it that way but technically… Anyway
point was because I lived alone I didn’t use it every other day in my apartment.
And then I bought a house with hard wood floors downstairs
So it’s still going strong a decade later and I still like it. But. Technically I can’t say how it lasted in a heavy use environment.
One more vote for “bagless is not what I want”. Fortunately, I have two uprights that use bags. They work really well. The cordless bagless stick vac I paid a lot more for, not so much.
