Scavenger hunt:: the quest for perfection!
1I'm really loving the reviews. Maybe meh will hire some of you for future write ups!
Today is a call to perfection. I've just finished voyager a few days ago and have the Borg on my mind ok? What would you add/delete to make meh closer to perfection? And really sell us on it. It can be a site improvement, forum improvement, something to do with bandwidth, or something like get sohmageek to shut the hell up! Try to get me to want your thing as much as I like to breathe (I really like to breathe considering the alternative.)
It's another community lead by points. Oh thinking of points. It's a triple or quad day cause of the holiday so. After being quadrupled its 600 points for a well written useful post. How do I weed out bad ones from well written ones... Your community members will get 3 stars from non team members to get the 600. Otherwise it lands in the mediocre pile of 100 points for trying!
New submissions accepted till Tuesday at 11:59 pm. Voting goes on till Friday. However. If you post after today points are 1/4 the value. Every star you give is worth 50 points. Now write them as if meh will implement the best one. (I don't know if they will or not. But it's about engagement right?)
TL;dr post what you want to change about meh. Make us want it and vote for what you like!

Apparently on mobile you can't change the image. By the time I get to a PC it'll be locked. @moose @mehcus @JonT @Hollboll can one of you please change the image to a Borg cube? I'll award your team 50 points if you let me know who did it? :)
@sohmageek Come on @moose, you can fix this! :)
@sohmageek Someone did it! Who wants to claim the points? Also Thank you!
Despite some hang-ups I have with meh.com reaching too far beyond mediocrity, I would love to have more mobile-friendly forums. Mobile will always be limited. And the current forum accessibility falls right into the heart of mediocrity. But I'll always be a fan of things that make my life easier.
One insignificant issue that bothers me more than it should is the star-blindness that comes with mobile viewing. (Calm down. I don't have any issues with the goat who brought us Tiny Tub Mummy. Though I am concerned that he might have been eaten by the contents of one of his exchange boxes. Still out there, @starblind?)
The stars are more than simple up-voting or rewards for being clever. ("You get a
goldyellow star!") They are a means of communication.Sometimes, you're mentioned and there would be little point in a replying to the comment. You see it... you appreciate it... you star it. The person who made the comment can see your star and understand that you simply didn't have anything profound to add to the conversation. (And all of us have one less comment to scroll through in that thread.)
In more complicated situations, the star can tell someone all is well. They haven't accidentally offended you. You understand what they are saying. You aren't pouting in a corner and giving them the silent treatment.
We must not be deprived of such peace-keeping tools!
TL;DR Stars are a vital communication tool that we need to be able to see on our mobile devices.
@christinewas TIMEOUT. You can tell who starred your comment on a non-mobile device? My phone only internet life sucks
@escowhat yup... It came out just recently I think... I've been forced to use the laptop more and more... :)
@escowhat @christinewas I can tell on my iPhone who starred a post.. I just press and hold the star, and it tells me..
@kadagan yeah, newer iphones can do it. But there still isn't any way on android.
@escowhat In case you've missed the latest forum update post, we can now see stars on mobile! Just hold down instead of doing a quick tap and the names should appear.
It would be perfect if... meh hired me for future write-ups. (Great idea, @sohmageek!)
Why? I need money.
How does this help you? I become a more pleasant person to interact with because I'm not stressing about finances.
Now that you've read this compelling argument, you should give me stars. (Or... hire me, if you're in the position to do so.)
What the meh forums really needs is a personal messaging system! A way to contact other forums mehmbers without needing to go to external email.. Preferably it would have an option to get a notification in email (like @ mentions do). Also, it should allow for group messaging. This would make the planning of many activities easier! Want to get together and send massive amounts of TP to the mediocre headquarters? Do it through PMs!
Short and sweet - the forum search is lacking. The drone.horse search using Google works well--having been proved there, let's implement it here.
Basically it just means taking the search box and pointing it at google with a site restriction in the query. So searches are no longer limited to full words in thread titles, but to all the things Google can find.
@djslack I really, really want this.
I would like the search option to include any post made by a Mehtizen, not just the ones started. Or any post where a Mehtizen was mentioned, even though there was no post by that Mehtizen. The mere mention of a Mehtizen should show in a search.
This would make stalking so much easier.
@lisaviolet Or maybe separate searches for comments and threads started
Also, I think that old goats should get a special badge of honor when they're put out to pasture.
Using the current goat badge, but upside down, would be perfect.
@lisaviolet
I agree. The graphic would have to be simple in nature to be next to the name.
@lisaviolet perhaps the ability to switch between your badges at will would be awesome. I'd love for the goat posts to stay goat (upside down or whatever.) but new ones to be normal. Also my goat stays in meh. Doesn't follow me to mediocre... Blessing and a curse?
@sohmageek There's no blame to be had on Mediocre. A different class of people. laughing
@sohmageek @lisaviolet
I found the goat did not follow me over to drone.horse either. It was a welcome retreat.
@hallmike Yes! That's exactly it! @JonT, lookie here!
@hallmike
@lisaviolet I think you want @Shawn to look..
@lisaviolet the only thing I worry about is the number of goats emblems floating around. Upside down or not they could be confusing for some. Also I like the present goat to stand out for all to blame. I don't want any unexpected blame coming my way. I get enough of that from @christinewas and @jaremelz.
@mfladd - But . . . expecting the unexpected makes the unexpected expected.
@mfladd That's why the upside down goat is only for the past goats. They have no power. That's only for the upright goat. And there is only one upright goat at a time.
@KDemo And do you wanna know who I blame for that?
@jaremelz Me! Me! I know the answer to this!
It's @mfladd! @mfladd is to blame!
Oh, wait, that's last month's goat. Scratch that.
I blame @sohmageek!
@lisaviolet In my attempt to not jeopardize my points, I'm finding myself turning towards my old blaming habits. That or it just comes easy to throw shade at @mfladd.
And for that, I blame @sohmageek
@jaremelz I'm sorry. :( I wish I could help you with that. I don't quite think I'm qualified...
@lisaviolet I'm sorry you ended up with me as a goat that you have a hard time pinning blame on. But... I get you to get some running around done right?
@mfladd You just want to get the blame again... you know you miss being the goat... Bleat!
@sohmageek I put the blame on @mfladd because he said this in response to the old goats having badges "I don't want any unexpected blame coming my way." I guess @mfladd doesn't think people will be able to discern the difference between an upstanding goat and a goat on its back. I guess a goat is a goat to some people.
And run I did. Thank you for that.
@sohmageek And for that I blame @mfladd. But I'm blaming him in a non-goat capacity, so he can't do anything about it! It's just general blame. I feel like I've said blame too many times in this comment.
Purple! Forum needs more purple.
Sometimes it's hard to find the icon to expand hidden comments - Differently colored text or background will make it stand out.
It would be fun if the stars were purple, too.
@KDemo And it's not from @barney... I'm shocked!
@KDemo Purple stars! Absolutely, 100% the best idea EVER!
@Barney @kdemo I think I'm partial to #9966CC what's your favorite? I also like #430541
@sohmageek - Think I'll go with #5230A9. Anything with more blue than red.
How about some kind of downvote option? You can unstar something but what about those things that were never worthy of a star in the first place but need some indicator to their lack of meh-ness? FUCHSIA ISN'T FUCKING MAGENTA ASSHOLES is a prime examples of something deserving this "honor".
I suggest something like the pile of poo Emoji but just the outline, no eyes or smile.
@stardate820926 No. Your idea is a gateway drug to full downvoting that I will fight with everything I have.
@stardate820926 You know what @mfladd just said? Add me to the list. You want down voting, you can find it over in the nearly empty world of Amazon Storefronts filled with knockoffs and counterfeits that is Deals.
No. Absolutely not. Nuh-uh. No way. Nyet. Nope.
I'm sure you're an otherwise excellent person, who just happened to hit on something that some of us have seen the ramifications of elsewhere.
@Shrdlu @mfladd I just like the pile of poo emoji :)
I wouldn't have to necessarily be negative but I get where your coming from. And @KDemo already used my "more purple" idea lol
@stardate820926 I also agree with @mfladd. If you don't want to deal with someone's asshattery you have the option to ignore it or tell them they're full of it. Both are reasonable. Downvoting is passive aggressive as hell.
@stardate820926 and it is cute. Just trust me. You have no idea how many pathetic individuals are out there that would love to get their hands on any type of downvote button. Just to shit on everyone else because they can. And most will be the people who are not always here like us - mostly :)
@stardate820926 💩
@mfladd @stardate820926 is just too nice to consider such possibilities of abuse.
@jaremelz I know she is. But @Thumperchick was right - speak up or don't vote.
@mfladd Your comment to @stardate820926 brought to us by the letter F the number 2 and the emoji 💩
@sohmageek I am not to blame - you are! Now take it like a good goat - just close your eyes and think happy thoughts.
@stardate820926 The ONLY way I would consider allowing downvotes is if the site allowed each user who has actually made a purchase on the site to have one downvote per month- and blocked them from posting for 30 days afterward.
@OldCatLady I could get behind that. Especially the 30-day ban!
You know, I created this long drawn out message about a lack of follow through on prizes...but it's really gotten to the point of, meh.
Instead...I'd really like some opportunities to gain cool perks based on community participation and patronage of the website. I spend considerable amounts of time and money here...I'd me more motivated if said loyalty was rewarded.
@studerc
I have spent more money sending things to staff and people, than I have on buying things here. Which is great - I do it because I want to - but a little reward would not hurt.
@studerc back when things were good on deals.wOOt, JumboWoot would send us little rewards all the time. Goddammit - now you got me riled up!
@mfladd Oh...i know. Pretty sure i got every one of them. Ahhh, the good ol' days.
@mfladd Oh, yeah, like credit toward a purchase. That would rock. Here they could use free MVP for that, they have before.With free MVP, meh would benefit as well, because people are more likely to buy when they're signed up.
@studerc I still want my prize for the birthday contest.
@sammydog01 all aboard the prize wanting boat. I believe my count in now 3 prizes. :)
@studerc I think I'm up to 3 now... There was the video contest, The show us Meh stuff, and now goat... unless I'm missing one...
Perfection is boring. It means you've reached the pinnacle, there's no more room for improvement or change. Screw that.
Progress request:
Menu buttons at the bottom of threads!
A home button, to take you back to the top.
A forum button to take you back to all of the unread threads that @sohmageek started.
For mobile users - A COMMENT BUTTON OR OPTION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE THREAD. It kills that in order to add a main level comment on mobile, I have to scroll to the top.
TL:DR - gimme buttons, where I need them.
@Thumperchick one star for each of those requests
@hallmike Damn, I should've spread them out...
@Thumperchick Buttons confuse me. No star.
@Thumperchick What mobile? I'm so used to tapping the top of the window to scroll to the top (Chrome) that that's the least of my concerns with this site on mobile (which is still streets ahead of 95% of sites I visit)…
@brhfl chrome on android here and that doesn't work on mine. The double swipe/flick does, but it scrolls instead of jumps. That annoying AF on long threads.
@Thumperchick Interesting, I guess it's more of an iOS interaction, so they only implement it on iOS?
@sammydog01 stars are buttons...
@Thumperchick
@Thumperchick I love the idea of a comment button on the bottom. I'm also on android and scrolling up to comment drives me crazy.
More Tiny Tub Mummy!
Enough said.
There needs to be a second video guy. The videos are a major part of why I keep coming back at midnight, but I'm just not as excited, knowing there's a 50% chance it will be the same. Then there's that game where I don't even know if it's a repeat or if the servers haven't refreshed it yet. A second video person would also add variety for those people who somehow don't like the puppets, etc.
3 words - Irk coffee mugs.
I don't know if this has been said, bit I personally believe that Meh could use a PM system so members could talk to each other privately, perhaps user profile pages as well as an image attachment system as I'm often too lazy to upload images to tinypic or wherever.
@juststephen It was already said but you get my vote too (for the PM thing).
More videos from the Carrollton crew. I love @Matthew's work, and it's more polished, but @ChadP, @Moose and all make some pretty darned good ones. The trailer for the Sea Monkey film should have been a daily video selection. You guys look like you have so much fun.
Obviously beer.horse!
@brhfl I checked... the Domain is taken... well not available to purchase from Godaddy (I know... but I use them currently)
@sohmageek well, it could be any number of things… mehbeer.horse, letsdrinkabeeraswewaitformidnight.horse, fuckyouwhoeverboughtbeer.horse…
@brhfl - hops.horse? brew.horse!!
I know this is probably over, but it would be REEAAALLLYYY nice on the forums if you can view a list of topics that you have responded to. That way I can find the threads that I posted and wanted to follow up on two weeks ago, but can't remember what the title was.
@Bogie If you click on your own name, you'll get a list of the threads you started... followed by a list of threads you've participated in. Not quite what you're looking for, but close.
@Thumperchick Sadly this just shows what threads you have created. It doesn't show what threads you've commented on.
@Bogie Well shit, it was doing both the other day - oh... nope... I just have an interesting glitch. Damn.
@Bogie That's kind of what I said up above, the one before the old goat badge.
https://meh.com/forum/topics/scavenger-hunt-the-quest-for-perfection#55ed93df40f23e0001350012
@Bogie @lisaviolet - New today: If you put your username in the main search, (under community), it'll show a bunch of places your name appears in the forums. It's not exactly what you're asking, but it's a step closer.
@KDemo Wow! That's so cool! About time. Thank you for the heads up!
And it should make the Mehrican Exchanges a lot easier to personalize (for those of us who do that sort of thing).
Look at all of those posts that invoke lisaviolet!
